Strength and ConditioningIInn tthhee GGyymmThe strength and conditioning staffworks closely with each coaching staffto develop a program appropriate fortheir sport, catering to the strengths andweaknesses of the individual athletes.

The goal of the athletic performancestaff is to prepare the athletes for thephysical and mental demands of theirsport. Physically, an increase in strengthimproves durability, decreasing the riskof injury. Strength training focuses on theuse of free weight multi-joint exercises.Olympic Weightlifting movements andplyometrics teach athletes explosive-ness. Speed, quickness, and agility drillshelp to transfer the gained strength andpower to the athletic arena. In addition, just as athletics places mental demandson the athletes and teams, trainingfocuses on the development of mentaltoughness and team cohesiveness.Athletes are taught to train through theircomfort zone and work with their team-mates to achieve optimal performance.

Conditioning workouts train for themetabolic demands of the sport throughthe manipulation of work intervals, restintervals, movements and distances.Sport specific conditioning tests are per-formed throughout the year in order tomonitor changes in fitness and speed, aswell, as to motivate theathletes to perform at their highest levelduring each workout. The strength andconditioning programs are designed toimprove strength and durability, as wellas teach the body to perform explosivelyin athletic movements. All workouts aredesigned to work the entire body, focus-ing on quality, not quantity.

The strength and conditioning depart-ment is excited to participate in thedevelopment of each of the athletes'careers at Marquette and feels thatstrength and conditioning is an essentialcomponent to the success of allathletes regardless of age, sport, or abil-ity level.

The Golden Eagles conduct theirstrength training under the direction ofassistant strength and conditioningcoach Rudy Thomas at the Al McGuireCenter.

Marquette University is a Catholic, Jesuit universitydedicated to serving God by serving our students and con-tributing to the advancement of knowledge. Our mission, therefore, is the search for truth, the discovery and shar-ing of knowledge, the fostering of personal and profes-sional excellence, the promotion of a life of faith, and thedevelopment of leadership expressed in service to others.

ExcellenceOur students, whether traditional or non-traditional,

undergraduate, graduate or professional, come toMarquette University to share our commitment to the pur-suit of excellence in all things as a life-long endeavor. Theycome to join a community whose members — faculty, staff, students, trustees, alumni and friends alike —believe that education must encompass the whole person:spiritual and moral as well as intellectual, the heart as wellas the mind. And they come seeking the educational, pro-fessional and cultural advantages of a university located inthe heart of the city. We, in turn, take seriously our respon-sibility to foster and support excellence in teaching andresearch, to keep a Marquette education accessible to adiverse population of students, and to offer personal atten-tion and care to each member of the Marquette communi-ty.

FaithAs a Catholic university, we are committed to the unfet-

tered pursuit of truth under the mutually illuminating pow-ers of human intelligence and Christian faith. Our Catholicidentity is expressed in our choices of curricula, our spon-sorship of programs and activities devoted to the cultiva-tion of our religious character, our ecumenical outlook, and our support of Catholic beliefs and values. Preciselybecause Catholicism at its best seeks to be inclusive, weare open to all who share our mission and seek the truthabout God and the world, and we are firmly committed toacademic freedom as the necessary precondition for thatsearch. We welcome and benefit enormously from thediversity of seekers within our ranks, even as we freelychoose and celebrate our own Catholic identity.

LeadershipAs a Jesuit university, Marquette embodies the intel-

lectual and religious traditions of the Society of Jesus.Through an academically-rigorous, values-centered cur-riculum, our students receive a firm grounding in the liber-al arts, preparation for work in a world of increasing com-plexity and diversity, and formation for life as ethical andinformed leaders in their religious, cultural, professionaland civic communities. They work with and learn from fac-ulty who are true teacher scholars, whose research notonly advances the sum of human knowledge, but alsoinforms their teaching, and whose commitment to stu-dents is fundamental to their intellectual and professionallives.

ServiceThrough both our academic and co-curricular pro-

grams, Marquette strives to develop men and women whowill dedicate their lives to the service of others, activelyentering into the struggle for a more just society. Weexpect all members of the Marquette community, whatev-er their faith tradition, to give concrete expression to theirbeliefs by giving of themselves in service to those in need.

All this we pursue for the greater glory of God and thecommon benefit of the human community.

The Al McGuire Center is named after the school’s legendary basket-ball coach who led the men’s program to an NCAA championship, anNIT title and 295 victories in 13 season. McGuire guided his squads to11 campaigns of 20 or more wins including a school-record 28 victoriesin 1970-71. His crowning moment came in 1977 when his MU teamcaught fire in the post-season and marched to a national champi-onship, defeating North Carolina, 67-59, in the title showdown. Marquette women’s basketball is determinedto build on the momentum of the 2006-07record season. With six newcomers and theloss of four senior starters, the look of theteam is completely different, yet the standardof excellence remains the same.

“It is going to be a very different year for usbecause we graduated so many of our min-utes with last year’s senior class, but at thesame time we have a lot of young, talentedplayers to fill those minutes,” said reigningBIG EAST Coach of the Year Terri Mitchell, who is entering her 12th season as HeadCoach at Marquette. “We know the founda-tion has been set over the years. Last yearwas a record season for us in so many waysand the returners see the opportunity that isbefore them. We don¹t see what is lost, butrather focus on the opportunity. It excites ourstaff and the players. Others are going tohave to step up. There will be a lot of compe-tition for spots bringing in six new playersamong a team of 12.”

Krystal Ellis, an All-America HonorableMention and First Team All-BIG EAST hon-oree in 2007, returns as point guard for her

junior season. Ellis led the Golden Eagles inscoring in 2006-07 with 18.0 points per game,a mark that ranked fourth in the BIG EAST.However, this season she will share theresponsibility at the point with newcomersAngel Robinson – the State of Minnesota¹sPlayer of the Year – and Tatiyana McMorris. They have the ability to run the offense andare capable of scoring. Ellis has been thefocal point of Marquette¹s offense the pasttwo seasons and with the addition ofRobinson and McMorris, the Golden Eagleswill continue to play fast in 2007-08.

“Krystal has been the central part of ourscoring over the last two seasons, and to seeher do the things that she did was incredible. Now, she will have other guards around herthat have that same scoring ability so shewon¹t feel the pressure to always be the pointguard. Tati and Angel are well accomplished, great point guards.”

Those three point guards will be able to getthe ball up the court and open up opportuni-ties for shooters, junior Erin Monfre andfreshman Courtney Weibel.

Monfre played back-up point guard herfreshman and sophomore seasons, butMitchell is hoping with the depth at the pointguard position, that Monfre will be able toplay the two-guard position more.

Joining Monfre on the wing will be freshmanCourtney Weibel who earned nationalacclaim when she broke the national highschool career three-point record. TheRockton, Ill., native connected on 471 3-point-ers during her prep career at HononegahHigh School and will give Marquette anotheroption from outside the arc.

“We are going to have to change the look ofour offense to accommodate where we canscore and the way we push the ball. In doingso, it will open up opportunities for Erin toplay her true position as a two. She is aleader and is good at that, but she is probablybetter out at the wing where she can readand make things happen. Erin has alwaysbeen known as a great shooter and now webring in Courtney Weibel as a freshman whois going to be right there with her. To have

that kind of fire power on the wing is going tomean a lot to this team.”

Marquette also returns high school team-mates from Detroit, Mich., junior MarissaThrower and sophomore Janelle Harris. Bothof them bring versatility to Marquette’s backcourt.

Thrower had valuable minutes last season.Marquette is looking for her to fill more of aleadership role. She possesses the ability tohit the three, has a good mid-range game andcan play with her back to the basket.

Like Thrower, Harris is also a versatile guard. She is a strong penetrating guard, a slasherand one of Marquette’s top perimeterdefenders. Harris has shown immense

improvement over the summer, during theteam’s European tour to Spain and Portugal, and in the pre-season.

“In addition to the versatility that Marissa andJanelle bring to our team, along with threefast point guards and two shooting guards,we have numerous combinations at theguard position. That is the excitement that wefeel right now, because everyone has so

much to bring. We will have to figure out thebest look for this team opponent by opponent. We are going to put people out there to neu-tralize what they may have, but at the sametime look at our strengths and see our versa-tility.”

Marquette returns key reserves in seniorSvetlana Kovalenko and junior Kelly Lam.Complementing Kovalenko and Lam in thepost will be three newcomers in redshirtJocelyn Mellen, and true freshmen JasmineCollins and Paige Fiedorowicz. All three willadd a different dimension to Marquette¹spost game.

Kovalenko played in all 33 games last seasonand was able to give MU a spark off thebench. She will have more of a key role thisseason. Kovalenko’s work ethic and leader-ship will help guide Marqette’s young postgame.

“There is a steadiness about Svetlana and allof her contributions over the years. As theonly senior on this year’s roster, we have highexpectations for her on and off the court.Svetlana has the capability to score in thepaint, hit the three and rebound.”

Lam will also be looked upon to provide lead-ership as well as be a major presence in thepaint for the Golden Eagles. Her size and thevaluable minutes she played last season willprovide stability in the post.

“We are excited about the experience Kellygot last year and we need her to capitalize onit this year. We need her to come in and bethat low-block presence. She can consis-tently give us a physical presence and scor-ing that we need inside.”

Marquette looks for redshirt freshman,Jocelyn Mellen, and freshmen, JasmineCollins and Paige Fiedorowicz, to providevaluable minutes in the post this season.Mellen is a versatile player that has the abili-ty to score inside and outside and can handlethe ball. Collins, another Detroit, Mich. native, competed against Thrower and Harris in highschool. She is an athletic post that will altershots in the paint and provide the GoldenEagles with a different look. Fiedorowicz, likeLam, is another physical presence in thepaint. She has scoring and rebounding capa-bilities.

“Jocelyn is a post with perimeter skills. She isextremely tenacious and willing to give upher body whether it is a charge or a rebound.Jasmine is that long athlete that will be ableto block shots and rebound. Paige, early on,

has demonstrated that she will do whatever ittakes to be successful in the paint. Thatgroup collectively has got to feel great aboutdominating the boards and wanting to controlthe paint.”

“We don¹t talk about the loss, of last year’sseniors, we talk about our foundation andmoving forward. It is about these 12 players, six returners and six newcomers. The expec-tations never change. Our goals which are tofight to be the BIG EAST Champion and reachpostseason remain the same. I believe thisteam is focused and ready for the challengesahead. They want to prove that they arecapable of continuing to build upon what wedid last year.”
