First to come was a tiny Wallaby, still tucked away in its mothers pouch, followed by two weak-kneed kids and the porcupine on the same day! The porcupine slept mostly. Jhe kids spent most of the day feeling out the ground with heir new legs and bugging mom for food. The following week we had three more kids and ten ducklings splashing around in the pond. The emus came to us from a breeder, aren't they cute! Our latest attraction was born on June 6. A beautiful baby girl donkey named Rosemary. She was weighed in at a whopping 29 pounds, and she is growing steadily. Stop up to the zoo and see all the new babies we have, but hurry, they don't stay little forever! Nationally recognized artist, Tom Yacovella, has teamed up with the Utica Zoo

to bring art and animals together. Tom is a true outdoorsman, featured on ESPN's "True Outdoor Adventures," he gets his inspiration for his art from

nature's pure beauty. He is also director of the Annual Tom Yacovella Wild Turkey Calling contest for the Central New York Outdoor Show.

As an accomplished artist, writer and educator, Tom is the winner of various art shows and competitions including the 2003 International Art Competition, the Adirondack National Exhibit of American Watercolors, a People's Choice winner for the Wildlife Art Exhibit at the NYS Fair and winner of the National Rural Life Art Show, just to name a few.

You may also recognize Tom's work from the Utica Zoo's 2005 Annual Appeal campaign. His print, "Universal Kitty," helped push us past our $5,000 goal as an incentive gift at the $150 level.

You can find Tom Yacovella signed, numbered and matted prints for sale in .the Utica Zoo's "Zootique" gift shop for $55 each. For more information about Tom Yacovella, and to view some of his work, please visit his website, www.yacovellaart.com.

the summer of 1989 the Utica Zoo held a "Bald is Beautiful" contest to cele

brate the coming of the zoo's new American Bald Eagle. The winner of the contest (to

the left) is Dillon Cowen, held by his father, Norman Cowen. This photo was sent in by

Dillon's mom, Shayne Cowen. The Utica Zoo would love you to

share your photos, stories, old news clippings and any fond memories you have of the Utica Zoo. We will choose one or two

items every quarter to feature in "ZooNews" on our "Utica Zoo Family" page. Please

send photos, stories, etc. to: Attention: Nicole White
