Thanks for all that you do to warm and comfort hospitalized children and families in need. Thank you for all of your kind notes, helpful suggestions, patterns, and support. I am happy to tell you that this newsletter was produced on a new computer and with a new software package. In addition, the task was made more efficient thanks to the photocopier/printer/scanner provided by a grant from the Community Foundation of Frederick County, Md. That announcement was included in the March newsletter, however, I am happy to say “THANKS!” again in this is- sue. Special thanks to everyone who provides support to the Community Foundation of Fre- derick County, Maryland. Already I have made a change in the schedule of newsletters that I shared in the March newsletter! Because of the heavy workload in the Hood College Print Shop, I will be deliv- ering my finished copy one week earlier than planned. I will work on the issue early in the month—two months before the issue date—and will submit to the Print Shop one week be- fore the first of the month immediately preceding each issue. For example, I will work on the September newsletter in early July and will submit it to the Print Shop by the third week of July. It is my hope to have the September newsletter in the mail during the last week of August. I will meet my submission-to-print deadline, but there is no guarantee that the newsletter will be mailed on this schedule. If you have patterns, photos, or other informa- tion to include in a newsletter, please think ahead so that I have the material in time to in- clude. Dear Bonnie & Care Wear Volunteers,

I have enclosed a check to help your volunteers make clothes. One of your volun-

teers—Nancy Foulk—gave me a beautiful burial gown for my twin granddaughter who

was stillborn. Nancy’s thoughtfulness at our time of sorrow was greatly appreciated.

Sincerely, M. L

Ginny Queior sent this photo (left) of her Care Wear Welcome Home Jacket, easy booties, and a hat that she entered in the Chil-dren’s Knit Category in the Oklahoma State Fair. Her set won SECOND PLACE. Congratulations to Ginny. (After the Fair, Ginny donated the set to the Guild of the Christ Child in Antlers, OK.)

THANKS! ***********************************************************************

Care Wear Volunteers received a generous donation in memory of

MONA WEST

From

Her daughter Dolores Goudy Mona loved little children and recognized the need for pree-mie clothing in hospitals. She made well over 100 small quilts for children living through bad times. She also made hospital dolls for children facing surgery and she spent hours knitting and crocheting hats and tiny booties. Mona was a Long-time Care Wear Volunteers participant who loved doing this work. She will be missed by family and children in need.

The mailing list has been edited. Anyone who did not return a form from the September or December newsletter did not receive this newsletter. Please be aware that bulk rate mail is not forwarded or returned. The loss rate for this mail is very high. The Post Office has a “big black hole” where lots of mail and newsletters are lost!!!! In addition, mail is shredded in the sorting equipment, labels are lost, and some mail is just not delivered. If you hear of someone who has not received this issue and wishes to, please have that person contact me. I always have a few extra copies printed and available to mail out. I am happy to add anyone who wishes to receive the newsletter and will use the patterns to make items to donate to hospitalized infants and children or families in need.

A recent article stated that mental exercise is an important factor in reducing the risk of dementia. Brain-boosting activities include reading, playing cards, solving puzzles, and knitting. Another reason to keep those knitting needles busy making hats & booties!!!!!

Those who have access to Internet may wish to check free knitting patterns from: http://www.konabay.com

WITH SINCERE THANKS!

Five employees of GAMC submitted the paperwork to have their hours of community ser-vice (Care Wear projects!) included in GMAC’s Gift of Time Program. Care Wear Volun-teers received a check for $150 for each employee. Sincere thanks to:

Linda Cannon Shaunna Foster

Christie Jacobsen Anita Tomascak

Lana Woody I was not able to send a personal thank you note because none of the five is on the mailing list to receive the hardcopy of the newsletter! So, I hope that they are reading this issue on the website. MANY THANKS to you all and to GMAC!

NICE TO HEAR FROM YOU! Dear Bonnie, I’ve just finished reading the March ‘06 newsletter. It always makes me cry, to read about the preemies and all of the others who benefit from volunteers’ efforts. I’m so happy to con-tribute my time and my knitting to them. I’m on my way to the Post Office to send off a box of booties & hats. I’m sending this box to the Katrina Relief Efforts in New Orleans, from the address on page 28 of the newsletter. I can’t think of a better way for someone to help than to be a part of Care Wear Volunteers. Thanks for letting me help! Sincerely, MR

THANKS AND APPRECIATION! Frederick Memorial Hospital (MD) sent thanks. “You and your volunteers are so good to our hospital. The blankets you supply are so welcomed by our Birthplace. Thank you all so much for your kindness.” Beth Isreael Hospital (Newark, NJ) and Women’s Hospital (Baton Rouge, LA) send thanks to all of the participants of the Fanwood Presbyterian Church Women’s Association for donated sweaters, hats, booties, and afghans. Special thanks to Fiona Leahy for deliver-ing completed items to Beth Isreael. The group is working on bunnies for their next deliv-ery. THANKS to all and thanks to Peggy Ficken for writing to keep me posted. Shady Grove Adventist (MD), Magee Women’s Hospital (PA), Johns Hopkins (MD), Fre-derick Memorial (MD), Providence Health Care (PA), and many other hospitals and social service agencies send thanks to Care Wear Volunteer Angels—for the pillows, isolette cov-ers, medical dolls, burial garments, quilts, hats, toys, hand/finger puppets, slippers, mittens, sweaters, sleepers, booties, socks, layettes, neck pillows, chemo hats, scarves, wheelchair bags, isolette covers, etc. sent in 2005. This group donated 2180+ items during 2005. A thank you to Circle of Friends for funding shipping expenses. Special thanks to Gwen Craig (Rochester, PA) and Wyanetta Dixon (New Brighton, PA) for their time and organiza-tional skills. Johns Hopkins Children’s Center (MD) appreciates receiving chemo hats for children and pre-teens. Hats with braids are a big hit! Thanks to Betty Stone for her donated hats with braids—attached with Velcro ©. The braids can be removed for washing or for wearing the hat later. What a GREAT idea!!!!!!

Johns Hopkins Children’s Center (MD) sent a letter of thanks for medical dolls. “As I’m sure you understand, it is so much less frightening for children when they can use these dolls to understand and rehearse what will happen while they are in the hospital. Thank you for your hard work and thoughtfulness.” Sincerely, Patrice Brylske, Child Life. Earlyne McCleary (Chambersburg Hospital, PA) wrote, “Your thoughtfulness is appreci-ated. Thank you for the beautiful knitted & crocheted items.”

ANOTHER LETTER OF THANKS: Hello! This is very overdue. In 2002, my wife and I had a premature baby at the George-town University Medical Center in Washington, DC. Our daughter Viviana had medical issues from very early on, and try as the doctors did, they were unable to save her. She only lived for seven days. :-( The clothing that your organization created were the only clothes that Viviana ever wore and she is wearing them in the pictures that we have of her. Thank you for providing this valuable service! GT

Laurie Adams (National City Mortgage, Sacramento Branch, 1601 Response Rd, Suite 260, Sacramento, CA 95815) and her colleagues, friends, and neighbors delivered this collection (see photo on the left) of lovely handmade items to Sutter Memorial Hospital (Sacramento) in March. What a lovely assortment! I know that the staff and the patients at Sutter Memorial Hospital send thanks.

Photo at right: Susan Avery sent me several e-mail photos of her deliveries in March. Here’s one of those photos. Again, another lovely collection of sweaters, hats, burial garments, etc… Thanks to Susan for all that she does to help others.

PHOTO LEFT: Members of the Sun-shine Ladies of Care Wear at Glen Meadows Retirement Community, Glen Arm, MD 21057. The items displayed are part of those sent to four local hospitals that month. Thanks to Eliza-beth Barclay (Secretary) for sending this photo. Elizabeth is a Hood alum—class of ‘52. (fyi: I am Hood ‘66.) A delight to hear from Hood graduates who are participants in Care Wear Volunteers.

PHOTO LEFT: A Care Wear Volunteers participant sent photos of MARZIPAN carved infants! Marzipan is a paste made of ground almonds, sugar, eggs-molded into ornamental shapes. The work-manship is AMAZING!!! I will in-clude others if space permits. (I do not have a source for these photos.)

LEFT: Article reprinted from: The Washington Post

March 14, 2006 A touching column—especially the final question. I think of my favorite Grellet quotation, “...any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow-creature, let me do it now; let me not defer or ne-glect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”

My husband receives many state documents and shares those that might be of interest to me and other Care Wear Volunteers par-ticipants. This March 2006 report (No. R-04-06) included a photo of an infant at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (SEE LEFT). That hospital is on the Care Wear Volunteers Hospital List. How I wish this infant were wearing a Care Wear hat!!!!!! (Executive Summary below)

Another Marzipan baby!

This pattern was designed for Care Wear Volunteers by Heather Rinkel and was adapted from a pattern by Denny Kelly that was reprinted in a previous newsletter. Heather made this booties pattern to complement Jane Bonning’s Perfect Knit Preemie Cap pattern. Heather wrote, “That Perfect Knit Preemie Cap” by Jane Bonning is great.”

KNITTED BURIAL POUCH

As you may recall, the March 2006 newsletter contained a lovely pattern submitted by Darlene Price for a cro-chet burial pouch. Immediately after that newsletter went out, I received telephone calls asking about a knitted version. Elaine Pendleton came to the res-cue with this basket-weave pattern burial pouch for all of you who knit. MANY THANKS TO ELAINE.

ELAINE’S PHOTO ELAINE’S SAMPLE ON MY NEW PHOTO-COPIER! You can see the detail of the basket weave pattern. FYI: The finished pouch measures 8 1/2” long and 5– 5 1/2” wide.

The Frederick News-Post (photo left) went to the fifth grade of Or-chard Grove school to see the com-munity service projects underway. Using recess and after-school time, students are making bright afghan-like squares (crochet) for cats at the Frederick County animal Control Shelter. There are boys & girls in this group. Besides learning how to crochet, these students are showing their con-cern for the community. BRAVO!

THANKS to Barbara Wampler for sharing her hat & boy’s gown patterns with Care Wear Volunteers. Barb told me that the two smallest sizes are the most often requested by her area hospitals.

WAL-MART #1297 See the next page for more photos and for a letter from Jane Arney—with infor-mation about Wal-Mart store #1297 associates’ trip to Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL—see photo on the left.

Congratulations to this group of good people!!!

Jane Arney (Care Wear Volunteers Coordinator for Store #1297) wrote, Wal-Mart Super Center #1297 associates headed for Shands Hospital (Gainesville, FL) looking good in their bright yellow Care Wear T-shirts. This group is always ready to go and do its part for the “kids.” This year our Ellen Piechocki was voted Miracle Maker of the Year. We are all proud of her. This year our wagon (see photo on page 31) won 2nd place. We have such a good group of people! I want to thank everyone who spends their time and effort for Care Wear Volunteers. That is what makes our Wal-Mart so very special. Good volunteers and people fun to be around. Our co-manager Scott Dyer is always a good sport. He has been known to do every-thing—from playing the Easter Bunny to Santa. He wore his bright yellow Care Wear T-shirt and said he looked like a big banana!!! But, he’s always there for us when we need him. He has been wrapped to a pole in front of the store—with shrink wrap!!!! Once again it’s time to thank those of you who sent me yarn, Christmas stockings to deco-rate, animals ready to stuff, etc… This helps us to help others. Our Wal-Mart store has its very own preemie baby—Elizabeth Denise Boyette. She weighed one pound 14 ounces when she was born on February 19th. Her mom is Carrie Boyette who is a long-time Care Wear participant. She can tell us first hand how important Care Wear and Shands Hospital are to us. Our Wal-Mart preemie is now 4 lbs! (See photo above). By the time you read this, she will probably be home. Her pictures are displayed by the Wal-Mart store #1297 time clock for all of us to see. We realize how lucky we are. We’re enjoying the pictures Carrie has brought in so we can all see the progress this pre-cious little girl has made. So, all of the associates in store #1297 feel that we are a part of tiny Elizabeth’s life. Thank you to all of you for your work, talent, love, and caring ways. Jane Thank you to Jane for writing and sending photos.
