Copland's A Lincoln Portrait. His discography also includes a 1987 Pantheon recording with the Eas
Philharmonia and soprano Benita Valente, which won the German Critics Prize. Additionally, Effron j
forces with flutist James Galway for a recording of John Corigliano's Pied Piper Fantasy, winning a to
prize from Ovation Magazine.
Effron holds degrees from the University of Michigan and Indiana University. As a Fulbright Scholar,

Peter Serkin, piano
Recognized as an artist of passion and integrity, pianist Peter Serkin
is one of the most thoughtful and individualistic musicians appearing
before the public today. His repertoire spans four centuries of music,
ranging from Bach to Berio, Tchaikovsky to Takemitsu. New York
Magazine hailed Serkin "one of the supreme musicians of our time."
A product of the Curtis Institute of Music, Serkin made his Marlboro
Music Festival debut in 1959, followed by a New York City debut
under conductor Alexander Schneider. Since then, he has appeared
on the world's great concert and recital stages. He has collaborated
with such artists as Alexander Schneider, Pamela Frank and Yo-Yo Ma,
as well as the Budapest, Guarneri and Orion string quartets. Serkin was honored as the first piani
to receive the Premia Internazionale Musicale Chigiana in recognition of his outstanding artistic
achievement.
"[Serkin's] great gift is to find the essential music in everything he plays," reported the Boston Glob
"He never fusses but goes right to the point. The keyboard virtuosity is unobtrusively there, as a w
get into what matters most." In his own words, Serkin remarks : "I am not trying to convert anyone
just trying to play music I believe in." For more information , visit www.fredonia.edu/som.
Program Notes
Symphony No.1 in C Minor, Op. 68
Completed: September 1876
Premiere: Karlsruhe on November 4, 1876
The trajectory of Brahms' career reflects the fact he was a discovery, an overnight sensation, who
exceptional talent was recognized by a man of influence, Robert Schumann. When Brahms met th
Schumanns (Robert and Clara), he was twenty years old and a relative unknown from Hamburg.
Schumann authored a famous and widely read essay, Neue Bahnen (New Paths), hailing Brahms
voice of the future who was "sprung like Minerva fully armed from the head of Jupiter." Although B
yet to write a work for orchestra, he was now publicly admonished to take up where the great sym
master, Beethoven, had left off. Knowing he would be judged by the highest standards, Brahms w
paralyzed by the thought of coming short of expectations. He remarked to a friend, "You don't kno
it is like to be dogged by his footsteps." So dogged was Brahms, that the periodof
gestation for thSymphony took twenty-two years, during which time he struggled to balance classical intellectual
with romantic inspiration. He made a serious study of Bach and Beethoven works, including the F
Ninth symphonies and Third Piano Concerto. Brahms took these works as models but knew his fa
a symphonist would rest upon his ability to take the tradition down his own "new path." The enthus
popular and artistic reception of the Variations on a Theme by Haydn (1873-74) was likely the imp
Brahms to finally complete his first symphony. Its premiere in 1876 was the significant milestone t
him to compose other large-scale masterworks for orchestra.

Program Notes
Gabriela Lena Frank: Three Latin-American Dances for Orchestra (2003)
Gabriela Lena Frank was born in Berkeley. Ca lifornia, in 1972. She holds degrees from Rice Univ
and the University of Mi chigan. Frank has written the follow in g program note fo r Three Latin-Ame
Dances:
I. Introduction: Jungle Jaunt
This introductory scherzo opens in an unabashed tribute to the Symphonic Dances from We st Sid
Story by Leonard Berste in before turning to harmonies and rhythms derived from various pan-Am
dance fo rms. These jungle references are sped th rough (so as to be largely hidden) while echoingenergy of the Argentin ia n composer Alberto Ginastera who was long fascin ated with indigenous l
american cultures .
II . Highland Harawi
This movement is the heart of Th re e Latin American Dances, and evokes the Andean harawi, a
melancholy adagio traditionally sung by a sin gle bamboo quena flute so as to accompany a singl
As mountain music, the ambiance of mystery, vastness and echo is evoke d. The fast middle secti
simulates what I imagine to be the "zumballyu " of Iliapa, a great spinning top belonging to Iliapa ,
Peruvian-Inca weather deity of thunder, lightning and ra in . Il lapa spins his great top in the highlan
of the Andes befo re allowing a return to the more staid harawi . The music of the Hungarian comp
Bela Bartok, is eluded to.
III . The Mestizo Waltz
As if in relief to th e gravity of the previous movement, this final movement is a lighthearted tri bute
"mestizo" or mixed-race music of the South American Pacific coast. In particular. it evokes the "rom
tradition of popular songs and dances that mix influences fro m indigenous Indian cultures , African
cultures and western brass bands.
Three Latin American Dances received its premiere by the Utah Syn lphony Orchestra Ke ith Lock
2004. The sar"e forces are responsible for the work's first recording, which was released in April

David Effron, conductor
This summer marks David Effron's tenth as the Brevard Music Center's
director and principal conductor. He is an alumnus of BMC and spent h
summer here, studying piano, when he was fourteen years old. Effron ea
bachelor of music degree in piano from the University of Michigan . After rec
a master's in piano with Sidney Foster at Indiana University, Effron was aw
a Fulbright Scholarship and worked as assistant to Wolfgang Sawallisch Cologne Opera. Upon returning to the United States, he joined the New Yo
Opera, serving on the conducting staff for eighteen years.
For seven seasons Effron was head of the opera department and cond
many symphony concerts as a faculty member of Philadelphia's Curtis Institute. He then spent twen
years as head of the orchestra program at the Eastman School of Music. He joined the faculty at In
University in 1998 and now chairs their conducting department. Equally at home on the opera and
phonic stage, Effron has appeared in Europe, Taiwan, Israel , Mexico and Canada, as well as throu
the United States. His discography includes the Grammy Award-winning Lincoln Portrait with the Ea
Philharmonic and John Corigliano's Pied Piper Fantasy with flutist James Galway. Maestro Effro
recently awarded an honorary doctorate from North Carolina State University.
Robert McDuffie, violin
American violinist Robert McDuffie attended Breva rd Music Center as a stud
1970 and 1971, receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award last summer. Sin
time at Brevard, McDuffie has established an international career, appearing o
world's great concert and recital stages. He returns to Rome each June as th
founder and artistic director of The Rome Chamber Music Festival. The Ma
Rome has recently awarded Robert McDuffie the prestigious Premio Simpahonor of his contribution to the cultural life of that city.
McDuffie recently appeared with the Dallas Symphony, celebrating the
Anniversary of the Rozsa Violin Concerto, which they premiered in January
with Jascha Heifetz, the dedicatee. Upon review of McDuffie's 2000 recording of the work with the A
Symphony Orchestra, the New York Times described the violinist as "a sweet-toned soloist, lending R
arching, lyrical strains welcome luminosity ... McDuffie all but erases memories of Heifetz's famous
recording, which is precise but cool by comparison." In 2008 he premieres The American Four Sea
a new work by Philip Glass, and will tour Europe and the United States, pairing it with the Vivaldi
Seasons. He will record both works for Telarc International.
McDuffie has been profiled on NBC's Today, CBS Sunday Morning, PBS's Charlie Rose , A&E's Bre
with the Arts, and in the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. He is a distinguished uni
professor of music at Mercer University in his hometown of Macon, Georgia. He is a Grammy nom
artist whose acclaimed recordings for Telarc include the violin concertos of Mendelssohn, Bruch, Ad
Glass, Barber and Rozsa , as well as Viennese favorites. He plays a 1735 Guarneri del Gesu violin, k
as the "Ladenburg" .
