E-LEARNING STRATEGY
1. Definition and Aroach
The University defines e-learning as:
the use of information and communications technology to provide a range of approaches to
enhance and extend learning for a wide range of individuals and groups.
The University seeks to support the development of e-learning and to embed this into its
learning and teaching policy and practice to support students and improve the management of
learning. It acknowledges, however, that chools and disciplines have different needs and
re!uirements in the use of new technology and that diversity of approach, technologies,
assumptions and values should be supported within the conte"t of clearly defined ob#ectives
and overall targets.
The University recognises that:
one si$e does not fit all
technologies need to be matched to pedagogical intentions and learners% diverse
needs
any strategy needs to be fle"ible and responsive to changing needs, priorities and

identifying the University by its on-line presence
Underpinning these principles is a commitment to:
support pro#ects that enable staff to e"periment and evaluate the use of e-learning
the regular evaluation of e-learning pro#ects on the basis of robust and reliable
research information
enable staff to meet and share their e"perience and good practice
support staff development
e"amine and learn from effective practice in other institutions
provide effective induction programmes for students enabling them to develop
knowledge and skills in the use of e-learning
effectively deploy resources to support development of e-learning
encourage diversity of approach, provided it can be supported within the available
resources.
encourage the development of integrated systems and support
'. Strands
The University%s e-earning trategy focuses on seven key strands which are broadly
commensurate with the strands identified by 67847 and 9I4. 7ach strand has an
associated set of targets and actions 'see 1nne" 0+.

7ach chool will be re!uired to articulate an e-learning strategy that contributes to the
achievement of the broad University targets and ob#ectives. The strategy should outline how
the chool will employ e-learning across the range of teaching and learning activities.;esponsibility for developing the chool strategy rests with the 6ead of chool and the co-
ordination of the strategy with the chool
