2005 KANSAS CITY CHIEFS GRIDIRON GEOGRAPHY METROPOLITAN KANSAS CITY **************************************** On July 4, 2005, the day we celebrate our nation’s independence, the Kansas City Chiefs said good-bye to one of the greatest coaches in the Kansas City Chiefs history. Hank Stram, known as “the mentor”, passed away in New Orleans, Louisiana where he lived. Hank was the Chiefs first and most winning coach. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2003. He coached the Dallas Texans (who became the Kansas City Chiefs in 1963 when the team moved from Texas to Missouri) from 1960 thru 1974, and the New Orleans Saints from 1976 to 1977. Coach Stram led the Chiefs to American Football League (AFL) titles in 1962, 1966 and 1969 and to appearances in both Super Bowl I and Super Bowl IV. He was the only coach in the AFL to take the Chiefs to two Super Bowls. The Chiefs, under Coach Stram’s direction, won Super Bowl IV. Hank Stram had a career NFL regular season record of 131 wins, 97 losses, and 10 ties…the most victories of any coach in franchise history. He was honored as Coach of the Year four times. He finished his career as a commentator for Monday Night Football.
