What a Bumper Year!2005 was a great year for our MBA graduates with an
increase in opportunities and salaries across all sectors,
functions and geographies. A record number of our
graduates (97%) had secured offers of permanent
positions by three
months after
graduation and
96% of graduates
had accepted offers
in the same time
period (compared to85% in 2004).
Starting salaries
were up across all
sectors, with the
most significant
changes being in the
number of students
receiving sign-on
payments (up to
78% from 52%) and expecting end of year bonuses
(up to 97% from 86%).Our first year students also fared well, with 99% of the
MBA class of 2006 securing paid employment during
their summer break, either in traditional internship
programmes or, increasingly, undertaking project work for
large corporates or small entrepreneurial firms. Our
summer consulting team, in its fourth year of operation,
were completely sold out, with the six participants billing
a total of 120,000 in just 12 weeks.
Many Sectors Attractive to Students
It was particularly gratifying to see our students
continuing to choose careers across a range of industry
sectors. Over the last year, the Career Services team has
reached out to over 200 new companies in order to
increase the range of opportunities available to our
students and to provide greater access to our talent pool.
Despite the resurgence in opportunities and salaries in
management consulting and investment banking,
opportunities in other sectors remained highly attractive
to our graduating students.
It was also highly rewarding to see large numbers of
students using their MBA to leverage their expertise and
skills in new sectors, functions and geographies.
The Lure of LondonThe UK, and London in particular, remains the most
attractive geographic destination for our students,
despite their incredibly diverse national backgrounds.
We find that many of our alumni choose to work in the
UK on graduation but that they slowly move outwards,
either back to their home country or to other exciting
opportunities in a third country.
The contribution of top-quality MBAs to the UK
economy was recognised by the UK Government with the
Chancellors decision earlier this year to extend the Highly
Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP) automatically to all ofour graduates. This makes our MBA graduates even more
attractive as the visa allows them to work freely in the UK
without the need for any further paperwork on behalf of
their employer.
Looking Forward
Over the last two years, my team has been focused on
getting the basics right, by attracting a greater range of
recruiters to our campus and by embedding career skills
development at the heart of our MBA programme. Over
the next year, we will have the luxury of being able to
really focus on improving our service delivery through the
adoption of new technology for CV creation and search,
job boards and event sign-up systems.
The School has taken an important decision to invest
in the provision of lifelong career services to our alumni.
This is good news not just for our alumni, but for our
many recruiting partners, who will be able to access our
talented graduates not just on graduation but
throughout their careers.
If anything, 2006 is shaping up to be an even better
year than 2005. The traditional autumn on-campus
recruitment (or milkround) has been our busiest ever,
with more companies than ever before presenting and
interviewing on campus. Unlike in previous years, we
have had more companies from the industry sectors
present during the milkround than we had either
consultants or banks. Our spring recruitment process
for summer internships and projects is also shaping
up to be the busiest ever.
All in all, this is a great time to be graduating from
a top-quality MBA programme.
