BORROW DIRECT Borrow Direct provides access to books not in the Dartmouth College collection – as well as to books that are currently unavailable from the Dartmouth collection (checked out, on reserve, in process, missing, on order, or non-circulating). Borrow Direct provides direct access to the combined Library catalogs of: • Brown University • Columbia University • Cornell University • Princeton University • University of Pennsylvania • Yale University Search the Dartmouth Library Catalog for a book. If it isn't in the collection or is checked-out you click on the link for Borrow Direct (from within the Library Catalog) and see if any of the other BD libraries own the item. If they do, and it's available, you click the "Request" button and your request is sent. The lending location is chosen automatically based on availability. When the book arrives you're notified by e-mail. Borrow Direct delivers most book requests to Dartmouth within 4 business days. For Books NOT available through Borrow Direct make requests through "DartDoc." DartDoc You can request material NOT OWNED by the Dartmouth College Library through the interlibrary loan service. The Library will try and obtain material of any type or format – the lending library chooses to honor our request, or not. Submit requests: A DartDoc button appears at the top of each Library Catalog web page, or go to "Library Services" on the Digital Library web page and look for "Document Delivery". DartDoc takes a certain amount of time, approximately 10 days for microforms, books, or other volumes. Less time for journal articles. Including a complete citation for the material is very important – it speeds the process at our end and insures the lending library supplies the correct item(s). CIRCULATION SERVICES You can verify the "circulation status" of books in the Online Catalog. "AVAILABLE" tells you the book is not checked out.

"DUE 11/23/04" tells you the book is checked out and is due back by this date. If material is checked out you may recall an item by filling out a request at Circulation. NOTE: borrowers get to keep material for a minimum of 2 weeks. If you cannot find a book or journal volume that should be in the library but isn’t on the shelf Circulation can "trace" the material and attempt to locate it for you. STORAGE LIBRARY Older or less frequently used library material may be kept at the Storage Library. Items at Storage may be recalled for use on campus by submitting an electronic request through the Library Catalog - "Request Selected Item." The material will usually be delivered by the next day.
