WE NEED TO GROW
We live in an instant world of microwaves and drive-throughs and a disposable society in which things quickly become obsolete, so today’s message is very strange. In all the readings today, and especially in the Gospel, we see transformation, but it is not something that happens overnight, nor does it take place without effort. We are met with parables of a patient and loving
God who can see a positive outcome at the end and is willing to wait and nourish us and help us all get there. The sower’s seeds require a growth period and some careful sorting. To make the bread, one must knead it and wait patiently. In planting a mustard seed, something so tiny yields great results, but not until after completing a period of dormancy and waiting.

WHAT IS OUR LEAVEN?
In our own growth, something usually spurs us on and calls us to change. For a young couple who find out they are expecting, this may be the impetus to “grow up” and straighten out their spending habits. For another, perhaps a heart attack or prolonged illness calls one to wake up and gives one a second chance at life. Losing a job or a spouse or surviving a car accident may mean it is time for a “do-over.” Isn’t it amazing to realize that we are blessed with a tender, loving God who will walk through all these changes in our lives, who is cajoling us into a better self? Here is a God who doesn’t pull the plug because of our sins, but is willing to wait and sort and “gather the wheat.” Let us be grateful for this gift of loving mercy. Recall the simple prayer found in Psalm 86:15–16: “You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, / slow to anger, abounding in kindness and fidelity. / Turn toward me, and have pity on me; give your strength to your servant.” Today’s Readings: Wis 12:13, 16–19; Ps 86:5–6, 9–10, 15–16; Rom 8:26–27; Mt 13:24–43 [24–30]
We are very grateful for your continued financial support, especially through this health crisis.
Thank you to all those who are giving electronically, mailing in their donations or dropping them off in the mailbox.
Holy Spirit truly appreciates the generosity and sacrifice of so many in helping the parish to continue to pay our staff,
operating and ministry expenses. Your gifts allow God’s work to be done in our midst, in our community and in the world
around us.
If you do not participate in online giving, would you prayerfully consider signing up. Click on the “About Us” tab on our

After taking an over the counter pregnancy test, “Angela” was
surprised to see it come back positive. She and her boyfriend, “Don”, have a 2-year-old son together and another
baby was not in her plans.
She came to Waterleaf for an ultrasound saying, “I just needed to see so I can make my decision.” While meeting
with her Waterleaf advocate, she shared that having an abortion would affect her emotionally and she feared
other side effects as well.
After her first ultrasound Angela seemed undeterred and said “I’m leaning toward terminating. There is just a lot going on right now” however, she and Don agreed to return for a second appointment.
During the second ultrasound they were both quiet and suddenly the baby began to move around.
The sonographer said, "The baby is dancing." Angela asked, "Are they not supposed to move at this time?" and
the sonographer responded, "They move all the time, but you will begin to feel it around 15 weeks." Angela was
given pictures of the ultrasound, which she took home. They scheduled a third appointment and at that visit,
Angela and Don decided to parent this baby. They stated amazement at how much growth occurred since they
last saw the baby. They laughed as they watched their very active baby jumping on the screen. Angela is now
working with a resource specialist in the Aspire resource program to make sure she has insurance and doctor
care for a healthy pregnancy.
