An institution, like a person, changes dramatically over time. As we mature, we learn new things, acquire new

skills and rise to new challenges. Yet, ideally, while we change in so many ways we remain true to our core

principals. So it is with Hartford Hospital. As we enter 2004 and the 150th anniversary of our founding, we cel-

ebrate the changes that, over the years, have kept this hospital one of the finest in the world. At the same time, we are

proud that this institution continues to honor the core principle on which we were founded: service to the community.

Hartford Hospital was born in 1854 out of the belief that, in a civilized society, communities have an obligation to care

for the health of all their members. Early that year, a disastrous factory explosion awakened Hartford’s leaders to the

fact that many people in the community had no way to obtain needed medical care. Motivated by humanitarian concern,

leaders throughout the community called for the establishment of a public hospital. Hartford Hospital was officially

launched that spring. Today, Hartford Hospital continues to serve the community in countless ways: by providing excel-

lent, affordable medical care; pioneering new technologies and treatments; reaching beyond our walls to bring quality

care wherever it’s needed; working to sustain the vitality of our neighborhood; and promoting good health for people

throughout our region. One hundred and fifty years after our birth, we know more, we do more and we look very differ-

ent. But time has never altered our commitment to the community that brought us to life.

Editor’s Note: Although this annual report reflects fiscal year 2003, it is being published in 2004, the 150th anniversary of the founding of Hartford

Hospital. For that reason, we are using these pages to recall our past and celebrate our future.

Vision. Humanity. And the ability to transform ideas into reality. These are some of the qualities that have distin-

guished Hartford Hospital’s leaders from the beginning. The hospital had its origins in a disaster that rocked

the city of Hartford on March 2, 1854. The steam boiler at the Fales and Gray Car Manufactory exploded, killing

nine workers instantly and leaving scores seriously injured and burned. The city had never seen such a catastrophe.

But, for some Hartford residents, the event revealed an important truth: The city was not prepared to provide medical

care for large numbers of people or those without wealth. Community leaders joined forces to spearhead the establish-

ment of a public hospital. Dr. George B. Hawley of the Hartford Medical Society was an especially passionate advocate,

serving on a key early committee, authoring opinion pieces in the Hartford Courant and making speeches to galvanize

community support. Hawley later served on the hospital’s first executive committee and its first medical staff. Another

founder, Board member David Watkinson, advanced the hospital $16,739 to purchase a triangular, nine-acre lot at the

southern end of the city on which to construct the hospital. Watkinson later bequeathed $40,000 to the hospital to

care for the poor. Francis Parsons, a successful attorney, served as the first president of the Board of Directors. Today,

Hartford Hospital is still led by a volunteer Board of Directors, ensuring that the hospital continues to be guided by the

community. The original hospital site has been expanded over time and is now three times its original size.

1936-1954 Wilmar Mason Allen, MD,

chief administrator from 1936 to 1954,

helped transform Hartford Hospital into

one of the most modern and efficient

hospitals in the nation. Despite the

Depression and World War II, Dr. Allen

and the Board conducted two fund

drives that enabled the construction

of a completely new physical plant.

1986-PRESENT Current CEO John J.

Meehan was named president of Hartford

Hospital in 1986. Under his leadership

the hospital has become one of the most

technologically advanced and respected

health care institutions in the world. He

further developed the integrated delivery

system through Hartford Healthcare

Corporation.

1954-1976 T. Stewart Hamilton, MD,

was chief administrator from 1954 to

1976. A leader of national prominence,

Dr. Hamilton brought Hartford Hospital

widespread acclaim. He was instrumental

in the passage of legislation that created

Medicare. As a result, the first Medicare

check ever produced was written to

Hartford Hospital.

1917-1936 Lewis Albert Sexton, MD,

served as chief administrator of Hartford

Hospital from 1917 to 1936. An able

manager and compassionate physician,

Dr. Sexton presided over a period of

expansion for Hartford Hospital as it

sought to meet the growing demand for

hospital care. Eight new buildings were

erected during his tenure.

1976-1986 John K. Springer served as

Hartford Hospital’s president from 1976

until 1986, when he became the first

president of Connecticut Health System

(CHS). Mr. Springer had presided over

the creation of this integrated delivery

system that included other health care

institutions and provider-sponsored

managed care companies.

This 1937 aerial photograph shows the

original triangular property the founders

purchased in 1855. As the community

and its needs grew, so did Hartford

Hospital. By the 1930s, it was made up of

a complex of interconnected buildings.

Just as their successors do today, early

members of Hartford Hospital’s Board

of Directors took their responsibilities

seriously. This volume contains

meticulously recorded minutes of

meetings of Hartford Hospital’s Board

of Directors from 1854 to 1901.

Advances in medicine have helped people lead longer, healthier lives. Hartford Hospital has always been in the

vanguard of medical innovation, using leading-edge research and technologies to provide the community with

the finest medical care. The physicians and nurses who cared for patients at Hartford Hospital in its earliest

years had few diagnostic or treatment options to choose from. Typhoid, diphtheria and tuberculosis—then called “con-

sumption”—took many lives. Cold-water baths were the only way to reduce fever. Diagnosis relied on observation and

touch; rest and nutrition were the most common treatments. But the 20th century was to change all that. In 1900,

Hartford Hospital acquired one of the new X-ray machines, an important diagnostic and treatment tool. As the century

went on, new infection-control methods enabled surgeons to perform lifesaving procedures. New medical tests were

developed, and new pharmaceuticals appeared, including sulfa drugs and the first antibiotics. Intravenous administra-

tion of fluids became possible. By 1959, Hartford Hospital was performing its first open-heart surgeries. Today, mirac-

ulous new medicines and sophisticated technologies are helping us cure or control diseases, look inside the body to

diagnose illness and injury, and resolve life-threatening conditions using minimally invasive techniques. As it has for

150 years, Hartford Hospital remains committed to keeping pace with advances in medical science.

When Hartford Hospital was founded,

a list of existing medications would

have f i l led less than a page, and

m o s t would have been prepared by

individual doctors or pharmacists. The

mid-20th century medications shown

here are antiquated by today’s

standards, when a 2,500-page volume

is required to list available drugs.

Much has changed in medicine since this

photograph was taken in the 1940s. For

one thing, doctors seeing inpatients are

likely to be “hospitalists.”

Today, diagnosis and treatment are

dramatically improved by the use of

advanced imaging technology. This image

from a PET/CT scan shows a malignant

lung nodule that might not have been

discovered otherwise. In 2002, Hartford

Hospital became the first hospital in

New England to install this sophisticated

PET/CT instrument.

Ronald Rosenberg, MD, medical director

of Clinical Nuclear Medicine at Hartford

Hospital, demonstrates the advanced

PET/CT scanner. With this instrument,

physicians can precisely locate a cancer-

ous tumor, see how far it has spread and

determine whether therapies are working.

When innovative medications are proven

safe and effective, Hartford Hospital is

always among the first hospitals in the

country to use them to benefit patients.

Continuous learning is a hallmark of life

at Hartford Hospital. The body of medical

knowledge is constantly growing and

changing, and we are committed to stay-

ing in the forefront.

Medical advances have made pregnancy

and childbirth safer than ever.

Noninvasive ultrasound studies such

as the one being done here can detect

fetal problems early, so steps can be

taken to address them, sometimes

even before the baby is born.

This hyperbaric oxygen chamber is a

key component of Hartford Hospital’s

Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric

Medicine. Opened in 2003, the center

uses hyperbaric oxygen therapy,

state-of-the-art medicines and healing

techniques, and a multidisciplinary

approach to treat hard-to-heal wounds.

Hartford Hospital uses the most advanced

CT scanning equipment available in the

world today. With it, physicians can see

inside the body to diagnose and treat

serious, sometimes life-threatening, con-

ditions. Here, a CT scan of the abdominal

aorta reveals a narrowing of a blood ves-

sel supplying the patient’s kidney.

From its earliest days, Hartford Hospital has been distinguished by the quality of its medical staff. Hartford

Hospital physicians pioneered medical advances that have dramatically improved health care around the world.

The physicians who helped found Hartford Hospital were among the most eminent and qualified of their time.

Many members of Hartford Hospital’s first medical staff were founding members of the Hartford Medical Society, which

was formed in 1846 to encourage collegiality among physicians who were formally trained. As medical knowledge

expanded over the years, the physicians who came to Hartford Hospital brought leading-edge expertise with them. This

led to the creation of specialized departments focused on various aspects of patient care. The hospital’s Department

of Obstetrics and Gynecology began with the appointment of Phineas Henry Ingalls, MD, in 1884. Dr. Ingalls was also

instrumental in the development of the Hartford Hospital Training School for Nurses. Dr. Ansel Granville Cook’s

appointment as attending orthopedic surgeon in 1889 marked the founding of the Department of Orthopedics. Surgery

was advanced by Dr. Oliver Cotton Smith. And, under the leadership of Dr. Thomas Hepburn, the Department of Urology

was formally begun in 1935. Today, Hartford Hospital’s well-established reputation for medical excellence continues

to attract the world’s finest medical minds.

1908

Dr. Ansel Granville Cook, Hartford

Hospital’s first orthopedic surgeon,

gained an international reputation,

especially in foot surgery. Among

his many distinctions, Dr. Cook made

a specially designed pair of shoes

for President-elect William Howard

Taft in 1908. During World War I,

Dr. Cook devised a method for

making customized boots for U.S.

soldiers with problem feet.

as are the instruments used in applying

it. Instruments here were designed

and, in some cases, made by pioneering

neurosurgeon William Beecher Scoville,

what they were doing. Also by 1900,

improved infection-control techniques

were making abdominal surgery safer

and more common.

Dr. Thomas Hepburn (left) founded

Many specialties were practiced for quite

some time before being formally recog-

nized as distinct disciplines. The nurse

Hartford Hospital was among the first institutions in America to establish a formal nurse training program,

and was a leader in adopting the team nursing concept. More educated and skilled than ever before, today’s

nurses are recognized as collaborative partners in patient care. When Hartford Hospital was founded, nursing

had not yet emerged as a formal profession. But by the 1870s, Florence Nightingale’s revolutionary nurse training pro-

gram was commanding attention throughout the Western world. When Dr. Benjamin Hawley first proposed the creation

of a nurse training school at Hartford Hospital in 1876, there were only three such schools in the U.S. In March 1877,

Hartford Hospital’s Training School for Nurses, which was based on the innovative Nightingale Plan, opened under the

direction of Frances A. Tuttle. The curriculum included lectures, reading and practical experience. Students could not be

married, and they lived at the hospital, receiving room, board and a stipend of $10 a month. The addition of trained

nurses to the hospital staff significantly improved patient care. In the decades that followed, medical knowledge

expanded dramatically, requiring nurses to have more extensive education and take on demanding new responsibilities.

Today, Hartford Hospital’s nurses are key members of collaborative, interdisciplinary teams dedicated to providing

unsurpassed excellence in patient care.

1895

In 1895, Linda A. Richards, America’s

first trained nurse, became superin-

tendent of Hartford Hospital’s Training

School for Nurses, later called the

Hartford Hospital School of Nursing.

Richards had visited with Florence

Nightingale in England and established

the first school of nursing in Japan. In

1911, she published a book about her

experiences as a nurse, Reminiscences

of America’s First Trained Nurse.

The Hartford Hospital Training School

for Nurses held students to the highest

intellectual and moral standards. But

that didn’t mean that the young ladies

couldn’t indulge in some lighthearted

moments with a handy teaching tool,

as they did for this 1894 photo.

A 1956 photo of a nursing team at

Hartford Hospital. The hospital pioneered

the “team nursing” concept in the mid-

20th century. This approach to patient

care acknowledged a greater managerial

role for nurses. Team leaders analyzed

patients’ needs and delegated various

tasks to appropriate team members.

The first nurses trained at Hartford

Hospital could not have imagined the

heights to which their professional

descendants would rise. John Fisher, RN,

Chief Flight Nurse of Hartford Hospital’s

Life Star team, brings emergency care

by air to people statewide.

Being a nurse in the 21st century

demands more knowledge and skill than

ever. Today’s nurses complete exacting

educational programs, perform sophisti-

cated tasks and have greater autonomy.

Yet, like Beverley McKoy, RN, CNOR, they

bring to their profession the enthusiasm

and compassion that have distinguished

nurses from the beginning.

Nurses today are key members of collabo-

rative, multidisciplinary teams. Like

Becky Keparutis, RN, they are the

vigilant front line in caring for hospital-

ized patients, and provide a critical link

between patients and other professionals.

Hartford Hospital’s School of Nursing had

a proud, 99-year tradition of excellence

in nursing education. The program was

discontinued in 1976. This bronze statue,

donated by alumni to commemorate the

school, stands in the hospital’s

Meditation Garden.

Linda A. Richards, Lady Superintendent of

the Hartford Hospital Training School for

Nurses from 1895 to 1897, instructs a

class of student nurses. Among other

skills, early students learned to apply

leeches. As medical knowledge exploded

throughout the 20th century, nurses took

on increasingly complex responsibilities.

Hartford Hospital’s physical plant has evolved steadily over the past 150 years to reflect burgeoning medical

knowledge and changing community needs. Hartford Hospital’s first building drew on the best current think-

ing in hospital design. It consisted of a three-story center building, with a two-story wing for men’s and

women’s wards. The design emphasized sunlight and fresh air and featured gas lighting, central heat, speaking tubes,

an operating room and a medical library. Wisely, the founders made sure the design provided for future expansion.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the hospital erected new structures as needs arose. By the 1930s, the

campus was a rambling complex of buildings. The Board decided to replace the hodgepodge with a modern facility. By

1949, the South and High Buildings, as well as the Jefferson Street Medical Building, were open, followed by the Bliss

Wing in 1972. Spaces opened in the 1990s and 2000s included the Helen and Harry Gray Cancer Center and the state-

of-the-art CORE Building (CENTRAL STERILE SUPPLY, OPERATING ROOM, RADIOLOGY AND EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT). Today, the

hospital continues to reflect the changing world of health care by reaching out into the community with primary care

offices, rehabilitation and laboratory facilities and wellness centers throughout our service area. Providing outstand-

ing health care whenever and wherever it’s needed: That’s Hartford Hospital’s commitment to our community.

as The Home for the Sick, it had

been an experimental undertaking

by a society of concerned citizens.

When the High Building opened in 1948,

it was a model of patient-care efficiency.

It featured intercoms in patient rooms

and was the first hospital with a built-in

oxygen system. Combined with the

South Building (visible at the far right),

it gave Hartford Hospital a capacity of

810 patients and 170 infant bassinets.

The Barney Building opened in 1932.

It was part of the School of Nursing and

featured a gymnasium, a swimming pool,

classrooms and a library.

The first buildings Hartford Hospital con-

structed—the main building and wards 1 and

2—are at the center and left of this circa 1875

photo. They opened in August 1860. Architect

William Russell West’s design provided for

future expansion. South wing, added in 1870,

is seen to the right of the main entrance.

South Building, completed in 1942, was

the first structure of the modern Hartford

Hospital. The second phase, construction

of the 13-story High Building, was post-

poned because of World War II. The origi-

nal plan for one 18-story building was

Hartford Hospital continues to evolve to

meet community needs. The CORE facility,

seen left of the Brownstone Building, was

completed in 2002. CORE’s expanded sur-

gery, emergency-medicine and radiology

capabilities position the hospital to serve

the community well for years to come.

Funds for the renovations came largely

from the 150th Anniversary Campaign.

An aerial view of the Hartford Hospital

campus today. The hospital still occupies

the nine-acre triangular piece of land the

founders purchased in 1855, but the

property has been expanded over the

years by additional purchases.

The Medical Office Building at 85

Seymour Street, completed in 1986, gives

patients and physicians convenient

access to the hospital and to a range of

health care specialists.

The Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center

opened in 1990. Created with assistance

from a generous gift from the Gray family,

the center brings the community the best,

most up-to-the-minute resources for

cancer diagnosis and treatment.

C H A I R M A N ’ S M E S S A G E

Hartford Hospital was founded 150 years ago out of the

community’s desire to do the right thing—to act responsi-

bly in caring for its members. That commitment to ethical,

responsible action continues to guide us.

National attention has recently, and wisely, focused on

corporate responsibility and accountability. This has provided the

impetus for the hospital Board, through its Executive Committee, to

undertake a thorough review of Board policies and practices in

fulfilling its fiduciary responsibilities to the community. I am pleased

to report that the study reaffirmed that oversight and management

of the hospital by the Board and the administration continue to meet

the highest standards for integrity.

Hartford Hospital has long provided the most advanced

medical care. However, the hospital today faces increasing financial

challenges in continuing to do so. The confluence of the availability

of sophisticated but expensive procedures and equipment and

declining economic support from state and federal governments and

insurance companies places a severe strain on hospital resources.

In this environment, philanthropy becomes particularly critical. That

is why the success of the 150th Anniversary Campaign is a special

cause for celebration. Thanks to the generosity of donors and the

energy and dedication of volunteers and staff members, the cam-

paign is progressing well toward its scheduled 2004 conclusion.

Thanks go to Don Frahm and Marty Becker, chairman and vice chair-

man, respectively, of the 150th Anniversary Campaign, and to Roger

Klene, chairman of the Development Committee, for their leadership.

As we move forward with the campaign, we will need the continued

help of our volunteers and the support of new donors in order to

fully address the hospital’s pressing needs.

One of the great strengths of Hartford

Hospital is its medical staff. Our physicians

are not only technically excellent, highly

motivated and caring clinicians, but active

partners in setting direction for the hospi-

tal, as well. Several physicians bring their

perspective to the Board. They include H.

David Crombie, MD; Jonathan Dixon, MD; William B. Henry, MD;

Richard Lilly, MD; Andrew L. Salner, MD; Arthur Tarantino, MD; and

Linda T. Taylor, MD. We thank them for taking on this important

responsibility.

The productive relationship among Hartford Hospital’s

medical staff, administration and Board of Directors is reinforced

each year at the Hamilton Retreat, an off-site event where physi-

cians, administrators and Board members gather to discuss a signif-

icant topic. This year we focused on ethical issues to ensure that we

“do the right thing,” both as a health care provider and a business

entity. These discussions will continue as we develop a framework

for responding to the continuing challenges the hospital will face in

2004 and beyond.

On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank the hospital’s

administrative staff, medical staff, employees and many volunteers for

their extremely valuable and important efforts during this past year.

Martin Wolman

Chairman of the Board

O ur founders would be particularly proud of the many

innovations that took place at Hartford Hospital this

year. In May we held the formal opening of the Olin

Neuropsychiatry Research Center at The Institute of Living. The Olin

Center will conduct leading-edge research on the underlying causes

of severe mental disorders. The center’s establishment underscores

the importance of philanthropy; it was made possible by benefac-

tors’ generous gifts.

Two new specialized operating suites are now operational.

Our NeuroAngiographic Biplane Lab, the first of its kind in the

state, features amazing biplane technology that enables neurointer-

ventional radiologists to see and manipulate real-time, three-dim-

ensional images of the arterial system. This allows the physician

to guide a catheter into the brain to repair aneurysms or impaired

arteries, often saving lives.

The Interventional Electrophysiology Laboratory also uses

biplane technology. It enables physicians to identify and treat pre-

cisely the areas of the heart that are causing an irregular heartbeat.

The new Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medi-

cine is the area’s first comprehensive resource for treating hard-to-

heal wounds—a growing problem for both physicians and patients.

This year saw the re-establishment of The Institute of Living’s

own psychiatry residency training program. Since 1990, we had oper-

ated a combined program with UConn. The Institute’s reestablished

program drew applications from 200 high-caliber candidates. We

welcomed the first class in July.

Thanks to planning done in 2003, Hartford Hospital will

soon be the only medical institution in the state performing sophis-

ticated robotic surgery using the da Vinci Surgical System. The sys-

tem allows physicians to use minimally

invasive techniques to perform exacting

surgical procedures.

We continue to value our role in

Hartford Healthcare. This year, we helped

Midstate Medical Center expand its serv-

ice to the community by adding a 28-bed

wing and increasing clinical capacity.

Other highlights of the year include the renovation of the

Auxiliary store. It’s more attractive than ever, and is a reminder of

the indispensable role the Auxiliary’s volunteer and fund-raising

efforts play in the life of the hospital.

Like hospitals nationwide, our fiscal results this year were

disappointing. A number of factors combined to cause an operating

loss in 2003. Poor stock market performance reduced earnings from

our pension and endowment funds, and discharges were down two

percent from last year. Costs associated with utilities, medical sup-

plies and insurance were higher. We continue to feel the effects of the

under-funding of Medicaid, especially in the area of behavioral health.

I’d like to thank our Board members for their guidance

throughout the year on a host of issues, but especially in the area

of quality. The Board’s interest in our quality program helps ensure

that Hartford Hospital will continue to provide truly outstanding

health care. And we can all take pride in that.
