Freedom and StrengthPilosophically speaking, freedom is strength:it is the power-- it is a virtue-- and ultimately a supreme goal.For if you are free, then you are strong.The question then is how does a human become free?There may be many different theories but most agreethat to be free is to only accept what is in our control.For if you put weight into something that is not yours, thenyou will be disappointed i.e. not free. Freedom is being able tomake your own choices-- to be able to control whatyou can-- and not try to control what is not yours.And what is yours?The will to choose and not to choose--- opinion.This is called free will.To put desires on things that are not in your controlwill bring on slavery to such things.All external things are out of the contol of the free will--your parents, government, even your body.These things are not yours to control.By choices and opinions, I mean to do what you think is rightaccording to "reason."-- this is yours and no one elses.this is the beginnings of freedom, strength and tranquility.

So much in our societyHas become cheap and tawdry.Whatever happened to taste?

In thisarea, people are so inbred (not I, however)and ill read that anything unpatriotic ispractically satanic. I have been called acommunist for expressing how limited ourfreedom is, because some redneck jackassthinks he knows more than I, when he'snothing but a dirty man. You wouldn't think there's a lot of 1stamendment fodder working at a conven-ience store...Lots of situations dujour...One of my favorites envolves a certainlighter that has a woman's bikini-clad torsoon it. When you push down the little buttonthingee that lights it (Sorry, I don't knowthe names of the lighter parts.) the nipplearea and the vaginal area light up andblink for a few seconds. The lighter does nothave a woman's head on it. Instead theflame comes out where the head should be. This mute little lighter says a lot about myworking environment. One thing it caters tois the constant group of drunk and hornymen who frequent my store. Without sayinga word it communicates what all of the menthink they know about women: we are justa body. No head and no feet. No thinkingabilities and no way to support ourselves.Only in Texas it said across the torso.Only in Texas would we still be caught up in

the dark ages of women's liberation. Everyday, I see ragged housewives walkingin, some haggard and afraid to look me inthe eye, some in a huge hurry to have theold man's dinner on the table, and somejust reminiscent of days past. I see how theyact about certain issues and I know thatthey aren't happy. I know what they tell meat times is not what they really think. Butmy job is to get them in and out with theirgoods and not meddle in someone else'saffairs, so I refrain from doing so.I hate that little lighter.I hate what it symbolizes and what it imp-ies. I hate it's cute, little, headless body with theunrealistic proportions disrespectfullydecked out in a (god help me) polka dotbikini.But at the same time, I love that lighter.You see, the convenience store I work at haschains all over the county and most ofsoutheast Texas. Out of all of these chains,

my chain is the one store that is allowed tosell this lighter after the two and a halfmonths it has been on the shelf. Why isthis? All of the other chains were solicitedby the conservative community so prevalentin this neck of the woods, and they backeddown from selling the controversial lighters.It was pulled from the shelves because ofthe negative portrayal of women. AlthoughI agree with this interpretation of the silentlighter, I disagree with it's censorship. Wasn't this the country founded on theprinciple of freedom?Don't we have a 1st amendment protectingour freedom of speech?Isn't taste irrelevant to this whole situation?So, while I hate the message the lightersends people, I like the fact that I am freeto sell cheap, tasteless crap to the masses. Itdoesn't make me the happiest person in theworld that people are so disgusting, but atleast we are free to be disgusting.

I lived my life by what was given to me,but it was never much to last long.my brother and I hid from people everywhere,tried to hide from pain as we ran into it.we always had a mother just never a father,she switched from man to man onto another.I always prayed for a better life and father,they were always silent prayers I never let her know.she married one day and almost died another,my step-father said her loved her by hitting her daily.she always told everyone she loved her two kids,she loved them enough to let them be abused and watch.I prayed for a new family and for someone to love,and I kept it silent and no one ever knew my thoughts.one unlucky day this man tried to force himself on me,and mother would believe him over me when told.I was a liar and a home wrecker they said,I prayed my silent prayers to stop the wrenching hurt,God was the only one who heard my prayers,then he answered them.
