A French harp By Holzmann

An outstanding and rare Louis X \ 1 giltwood and japanned haq j by (JodefVoi Holzmajin, the yoke rising to a massi\e acantiius car\ ed seroll hung with car\ed palm fronds and fruits, the fluted pillar standing on a shaped base carved with stylised acanthus, the yoke and sounding board finely dccorated throughout with polychrome chinoiserie decoration depicting figures on a see-saw, placing games in a terraced garden and fishing, interspersed with swags and ribbon-tied garlands of flowers; signed and indistinctl)' inscribed at the top of the sounding board.

French, circa 1 775 Height: 65'A' in / 16(i cm Depth overall: 30 in / 76 cm

The design for this harp is in the Encyclopedie, ou Dictionnaire Raisonne des Sciences, des Arts et des Metiers by Denis Diderot (pp 210-212), compiled between 1 751 and 1 776, where it is entitled a Harpe Orga?iisee.

The maker, (iodefroi Holzmann, was one of the leading harjD makers in Paris in the 177()'s and this harp exemplifies the best of the Parisian lutiiiers' work of that period. Holzmann's workshop w as in the Fatibourg St Honore, abo\ e a wine shop called 'Au Roi de Siam'.

The colourful chinoiserie decoration is not only of very fine cjuality but also very rare, since harps of this period were typically adorned with classical motifs and arabesciues.

hi this instance, the decoration is ixirticularl)- tiiasleiful and painterly the fi.gures being deftly drawn and full of li\ely charm and mo\-emenl (see frontispiece). ()lher details of swags and w reaths of flowers are also \x'r\- finely executed and the surface and ja])anning throughout is in a remarkable, original state of ])resenatioii.

This instrument is exactly the ty|)e for which Mozart composed his only major work for the harj), the I'lute and Harp Concerto, in Paris in 1778.
