Just as last month's Newsletter went to press, we were sad-dened to learn of the death of Phil Lawrence WIRFW (RealFine Whisky), who several of you will have either worked orheard on 2l l$la at the lunchtime sked, along with hisclose friend Bob WIIrD( also in the Boston area.My first contact with Phil was just over two years ago whenRon GM0NTL and myself instituted a daily sked with himand Bob. Ron of course with his superior equipment was ableto get tkough more times than Mever-the-less" in the twoyear period I was able to make 151 contacts. During thattime Phil would have his ups and downs due to a long-standing illness and also to the side effects of the many drugshe was required to take.Ifowever, after maybe a couple of days break we wouldagain hear his unmistakable voice penetrating the ether andhe would speak at great lenglh on the topic of the day. Hewas a lawyer with a superb command of the English languageand it was always a pleasure to listen to him. Being licensedsince 1948 there were few awards he didn't have. He was akeen supporter ofthe Ten-Ten International Net and, beingan active cw enthusiast, was also a mernber of the Interna-tional Morse Preservation Society. He and his wife Audrey KAICRA travelled widely and had agreat love of Scotland and all things Scottish" like the bag-pipesl They were regular attendees, along with Bob and hiswife Joaa, at Highland Games up in Maine and in Nova Sco-tia. The fwo couples had visited Scotland together severalyears ago but unfortunately we werent acquainted then.Last year I was privileged to visit Phil and Audrey when Boband Joan took me to see them at their lovely home inGroveland. Many of you will have seen the pictures I broughtback ofthe garden by the river and the aerial tower. Besidesham radio his other main hobby was gardening and he had amultitude of potted plants and a huge vegetable and fruit gar-den including alarge blueberry patch which he often usedto speak about.I)espite his increasingly debilitating illness, even in the lastfew weeks of his life he still managed to attend his monthlybank board meetings in Boston, such was his devotion toduty. My final contact was on 22nd December. Phil passed awaypeacefully at 5 am on 25th of January, the day we celebrateBurns birthday, rather fitting, I thin( for a man who lovedScotland.Phil, we will miss you greatly. Rest in Peace.

Tom GM4LRU

As a tribute to Phil we publish this letter which, on hisinstruction, was sent to Ron GM0NTL and Tom GM4LRUshortly after his death.

Dear Ron and Tom:

I greet you from I currently know not where. When youreceive this note I shall no longer be among the living.I write you, however, to let you know that I have enjoyedour friendship, and, if such things be allowed, I shall miss youand the bond of friendship which is not easily or freelyobtained.

Shed no tear for me but if atear does appear, let it bebecause our paths no longer will cross. Rather be glad for mebecause, in spite of the vicissitudes of life, common in oneway or another to all of us, I have had a full life. I haveseen things and done things which many others have onlydreamed about.

I hate flown by myself high in the sky in a sail planewhich is as close to free flight as man has achieved, and inso doing I have felt the touch of Heaven.

I have dived deep within the sea and seen another world, one of marvellous beauty, where the creatures of the sea ob-viously experience some ofthe same sensations of fear, curi-osity and response to gentleness which we, as humans, thinkwe alone possess.

I have walked the narrow streets of foreign lands whereonce walked ancient Romans, Michael Angelo, Dante, Gaili-leo, Shakespearg Mozart, Straus and others of high and lowachievement who lived as you and I and who now are longdead.

I have strolled the narrow alleyways of the Casbah andthe muddy paths of Pacific villages, competing with pigs andwater buffalo for walking space, and in so doing briefly en-tered other cultures so foreign to ours as to be in anotherworld.

I have felt the ocean breeze as I walked along the shore, listening to the cry of the gull and smelling the uniquefreshness ofthe sea at low iide. I have trod through fieldsof fragrant flowers and into the woods where the whisper ofthe wind through the pines and the occasional call of a birdwere the only sounds. The welcome smell of fresh cut hayand of sun lit pines have graced my soul

I have lived and loved and partaken deeply ofthe elixirof life. God has granted me the privilege to do these thingswithout being physically bound in some limiting fashion.

I have been lucky, surviving the entire period of WW I[having a modicum of achievement and a deep appreciation ofthe value and special favour of life.

My one great regret is that I did not do more for mankindbecause the good Lord has done so much for me.

So, you see, there should be no tears for me, perhaps aprayer of thanks for the great gift of life which I enjoyed. It has been a great experience, a wonderful trip.

Farewell, my friends, may you live long and prosper.

Fodunately we have more entries this month for the tables. A few contests have, as usual, boosted the scores a bit. I amstill keen to enrol more people for the tables so why not consider it as an option. It doesn't matter if you aren't too active(less work for me!!) or if you don't update every month. It's just nice to see what is being worked by everyone. The high-lights this month were...

The main activity at GM0CLN was during the CQ 160m Contest. Together with some other short spells that has resulted inthe following new ones... l.8Mllz : Croatia(9A), Germany(Dl), Isle of Man(GD), Hungary@A), Italy(I), Lithuania(LY)"Czech Republic(OK), Slovakia(OM), Belgium(ON)Denmark(OZ), Netherlands(PA), Slovenia(S5), Sweden(SM), Poland(SP),European Russia(UAl), Kaliningrad(UA2), Lawia(YL); 3.5MHz : France(F), Isle Of Man(GD); 7lvftIz: Morocco(CN), Ca-nary Is.@A8), Belarus@U), Switzerland(ID9), Italy(I), Luxembourg(LX), Bulgaria(LZ), Slovenia(S5). A total of 50 more on IIF and 2 on \{HF.After his shack move and thanks to a short holiday from work Wallace MM0AMV has submitted a healthy entry this month.So far as I am aware, the bulk of his contacts are using data modes,.. i4MHz : Croatia(9A), Andona(C3), Germany(Dl),Spain(EA), Moldova@R), Estonia@S), Belarus@Ll), France(F), England(G), Scotland(GM), Hungary(HA), SwitzerlandGm9), Galapagos Is.(HC8), Italy(I), Jordan(JY), Norway(LA), Luxembourg(L$, Lithuania(LY),Bulgana(LZ), Lebanon(OD), Austria(OE)" Finland(OH), Aland Is.(OHO), Czech Republic(OK), Slovakia(OM), Belgium(ON), Denmark(OZ), Slove-nia(Ss), Poland(SP), San Marino(T7), Bosnia(T9), Corsica(TK), European Russia(UAl), Asiatic Russia(UA9), Ukraine(UR),Canada(VE), Latvia(Yl), Yugoslavia(YU), Macedonia(23); lSMIIz: Croatia(9A), Germany(Dl), Eire(EI), Estonia@S),France(F), Hungary(HA), Italy(I), Norway(LA), Lithuania(LY), Finland(Ot{), Czech Republic(OK), Slovenia(S5), Sweden(SM), Poland(SP), Corsica(TK), European Russia(UAl), Asiatic Russia(UA9), Uzbekistan(JN)" Ukraine(UR), U.S.A.(W),Latvia(Yl), Romania(Yo); 2SMFIz : Croatia(9A), Italy(I), Bulgaia(LZ), Greece(SV), Asiatic Russia(UA9), Ukraine(JR),Canada(VE), U.S.A.ftID, Yugoslavia(YU); 70MHz: Scotland(IO85); 144MHz : Scotland(IO85); a32MHz: Scotland(IO85). A very healthy 70 on HF and 6 on VHF.Bob GM4tIYZis againoverworked and has had little time for radio. Some activity in the 7OMlIz Cumulatives Contestshelped and he managed to get the following in his log... zli|d}lz: Scotland(GM); 70MI{z : Scotland(Io8s, tO86, IO87);144MHz : Scotland(IO85). That gives him starting scores of 1 on I{F and 6 on VHF.Contesting on 70MHz has been the mainstay of GM4WLLs activity so far this year. As well as those QSOs valid for the ta-bles David has also managed to work 2 squares and 2 countries on l296MHz. However, his scoring additions have been....28WIz: Malta(9H); 70}&Iz: England(Io81,IO82,IO90,IO9l,IO92,IO93,IO94,JO0l,JO02,JO03),Isle of Man(IO74), Scot-land(IO85,IO86), Wales(IO73); 437lvtrIz : Scotland(IO85,IO86). Overall a whopping 79 more on IIF and 15 moreon VHF.From South of the border John M0BEX has had a quiet start to the year. He was still very pleased to work the GalapagosIslands(HC8) for an all time new one. His first submissions were... 3.5MlIz : England(G), Scotland(GM), Wales(GW);l4MHz:England(G), Galapagos Is.$IC8)" Netherlands(PA), Greece(SV); 24MI{z :Finland(OH); 28W{z:Belarus(EU),European Russia(UAt). NO\IICI and RAE Results

Today I received in the post the results for the above exams.Sadly this year there are some failures but I know those con-cerned are definitely going to try again.

RAE

THE CLUB's FUTURE PILOT

I would like to wish Ross on behalf of us all, the very best ofluck in his quest to obtain his pilots licence. Ross left here onTuesday 15ft February to go to Spain to study for a wholeyear. Believe it or not the training up until recently was doneat Prestwick so it is some change moving from Scotland toSpain but I am sure he will cope with the Spanish climate. Itis a shame that he didn't pass the December RAE as he couldhave spent a whole year operating from Spain. For anyone who wishes to keep in contact with Ross hisEmail address is [email protected] again Ross good luck from us all.

CLUB LMRARY?

The idea of a club library in some sort of form or anothercame from Vic GM4GGF at last month's Club Night. Theidea I think is great but it raises all sorts of questions. Wehave no club premises so where do we store the bookslmagazines? How do we know what is in the library? Who isgoing to maintain and run the library (a huge task)? Etc, etc?I am sure that there are ways and means that it could beachieved.Where do we store the books/magazines?

Each individual keeps there own.How do we know what is in the library?

A database could be created and put on the Club'sWEB for anyone to access and find what they wantand who actually has the book/magazine.

Who is going to maintain and run the library?A good enthusiastic volunteer! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

As I said previous it could be achieved but it would take ahuge amount of time and effort to put together. Club Mem-bers would have to agree to loan out their books/magazines.We could even put a small charge on the loan with the moneygoing to the British Heart Foundation. The question what doyou all think about the idea, would someone be prepared totake on the task? Is there any other points/ideas on the sub-ject or is it just a no go from the start. The benefits are thatinformation "for that project" or "that query" would now beavailable. What do you think then? Please give it thoughts with somefeedback instead ofthe normal "apathy reigns" approach. Ilook forward to hearing from you all.

What do you do on winters nights, when you can only run20 metres but the band is shut. Well, you can play UHF/VHF if youcan find anyone to talk to, or you can work true DX stations via the Internet.I know, I know, I know, Internet is killing Amateur Radio, or so the experts say. I am not convinced, I see Internet as an add-on tool but that is just my opinion. Anyway, enough of the scaremongering, lets get on with the story.Fire up your computer and point your browser at www.firetalk.comDownload the FREE software and install it.You will need speakers and a mike attached to your computer" or preferably a headset with boom mike......available from PCWorld/Maplins at f.l 5 - L2A.Run Firetalk and click on setup to calibrate your audio. Then click on SET {-lP ACCOLTNT ( fear naught, it is totally free ) , your machine will connect to the Firetalk server, and veryshortly you will be the proud owner of a Firetalk password and ident number. At this time you need to choose a nickname. It seems to be practice for the Hams to use name and callsigrl although if you in-tend doing other stuffwith the program, you may wish to choose something anonymous. Right that is the hard part over.

Now the fun part.Run the Firetalk program and on the little command console which appelirs, click on forums, and then click on CQ DX HamCoffee Shop.A quick connect later, and you are in a virtual room full of Hams from all over the world. You will be greeted in typical Ham manner, and all the normal radio operating protocols are used, such as Over, Go ahead etcetc. The CONTROL key on your keypad operates as the PTT switch. You may either treat it as a radio net, or if you wis[ it is possible to hold a private conversation.

Firetalk also enables international calls at local call rates to anywhere in the world, conferencing and all sorts offstuffAs an example, you can add other Firetalk users into your contact list. When they go on-line, the software tells you they areon-line, and with one click you may talk to them, whilst still surfing the Web.

Have fun and watch the telephone bills.

A#MfEs& AIJA&&!A#$Here we go again....engage brain! Anagrams of words with an Amateur Radio link are given below. When you figure outwhat the words are, they should be entered horizontally in the grid provided. Any black squares represent spaces betweenwords. When the grid is completed correctly you should have another word in the highlighted vertical box. Have fun. ..

The box below which was designed by Cambell MMIAVA so that he could use a Headset/Mike andFootswitch in a hands free enviroment especially duritg contests. The beauty of it is that it can beadapted for other radios by making up a lend to go between the DIN Socket to the speeific radio. Ihave built the box and I am now using it with my Yaesu FTl02 in my shack. What a difference itmakes working hands free.
