Originally a Catholic chapel, it isnow ecumenical. It holds a congregation of about 35 and is still usedtoday for small weddings and otherappropriate ceremonies.

In 1977, the Calvert Club decided Losell the property and the 13 acreswere purchased by the Wheeling ParkDistrict_ thr.ough a referendum.

The brick chapel was in need ofrest.oration which became a projectof the Wheeling Historical Society. When the work was completed in 1981,the chapel was rededicated as theLorraine E. Lark Chapel in theOrchard in honor of the former ParkCommissioner who spearheaded ~he

drive to save ChiJderJey fromdevelopment and possible destruction.

Although the buildings and orchardare gone the Park District hasconverted this area into a beautifulpark for both the young and old.I l.h1nk Mrs. Ljllie would be proud.

]n 1939, when Mrs. Lillie couldno longer manage the Crane Fundand the estate, she pensioned thewidOWS and children and sold 32acres of the property to the Orderof the Servants of Mary for theAddolorata Villa, a convalescenthome for the eld0rly. All of theoriginal cottages have been razed.Later that year, ten acres of theproperry were donated to theCalvert Club, a Catholic affailiat-eof t:he University of Chicago. TheClub used the area as a retreat forCatholic students. There were twohomes loca f-ed on the property, St.Joan's House, formerly known asthe Port House and St.Jerome'shouse which was used for vacationsby the Lillie family. One house wasused by the girls and the other bythe boys when lhey were on retreal. This was when it was owned by theCalvert Club. Those buildings havealso been demolished.

The library was added in 1940 and namedfor the English theological writer, BaronFriedrich Von Hugel, who had convertedfrances to Catholicism in 1920.
