A film student has found the perfect way to pay homage

to the great cinematic moments of our time -- Lego

dioramas. Self-confessed "Lego geek" Alex Eylar has recreated the most iconic (and sometimes just his

favorite) scenes)

Page 4: 200 film and Visual Culture Intro

"Each scene can take anywhere between ten minutes and an hour, depending on the size and level of detail," said Eylar.

"The American Beauty shot was the easiest: just a character in a bed of red

pieces. Inception was the hardest: it required an entire hallway to be flipped upside-down and characters placed very carefully. American Beauty took about 15 minutes; Inception took an hour to build

and probably another half hour to photograph.”

He owns 30,000 LEGOS!

How a brain watches a film…

Page 31: 200 film and Visual Culture Intro

To enjoy a film, it must want to be deceived…

“If an audience is to enjoy a movie or performance, they

normally must suspend critical judgment to do so.”

Page 32: 200 film and Visual Culture Intro

The brain also suspends disbelief …

“ Making it easier to believe in the characters and narratives, no

matter how unusual.”

The brain wants to make sense of the world …

“So it is easier to see the illusion versus frames of still images

speeding by.”

The film largely consists of a stick figure moving about and encountering all manner of morphing objects, such as a wine bottle that transforms into a flower. There were also sections of live action where the animator’s hands would enter the scene. The main character is drawn by the artist's hand on camera, and the main characters are a clown and a gentleman.

It is considered to be the first fully animated film ever made

“Sita Sings the Blues”

Sita is a goddess separated from her beloved Lord and husband Rama. Nina is an animator whose husband moves to India, then dumps her by e-mail. Three hilarious shadow puppets narrate both ancient tragedy and modern

comedy in this beautifully animated interpretation of the Indian epic Ramayana. Set to the 1920’s jazz vocals of Annette Hanshaw, Sita Sings the

Blues earns its tagline as “The Greatest Break-Up Story Ever Told.”
