What is PLCopen?PLCopen is an independent organization providing

efficiency in industrial automation based on the needs of

users. Its members, representing various industries, focus

on harmonization of control programming, and application

and interfacing engineering. Founded in 1992, PLCopen

members have concentrated on technical specifications

around IEC 61131-3, creating specifications and implemen-

tations in order to reduce cost in industrial engineering. The

outcome for example is standardized libraries for different

application fields, harmonized language conformity levels

and engineering interfaces for exchange and transparent

communication. Experts of the PLCopen members are orga-

nized in technical committees and together with end users

define such open standards.

Why was PLCopen founded?PLCopen was founded in 1992 just after the programming

standard IEC 61131-3 was published. The controls market at

that time was a very heterogeneous market with different

types of programming methods for many different control-

lers. The IEC 61131-3 is a standard defining the program-

ming languages for PLCs, embedded controls, and industrial

PCs, harmonizing applications independent from specific

dialects, but still based on known methods. It includes the

textual programming languages Instruction List, and Struc-

tured Text, the graphical programming languages Function

Block Diagram and Ladder Diagram, and the structuring tool

Sequential Function Chart.

Today, IEC 61131-3 is a highly accepted programming stan-

dard and many industrial software and hardware companies

offer products based on this standard, which in the end are

used in many different machinery and other application

fields – thanks to PLCopen.

What does PLCopen do today?Today’s technical challenges in the industrial control market

are very much different, and PLCopen follows the demands

of the market requirements with the main focus of driving

efficiency in automation by defining general standards.

Current topics are: motion control and safety functionality,

XML data exchange format standardizing the base data of

IEC projects in software systems, benchmarking projects

in order to have a good sophisticated benchmark standard,

and mapping to the OPC Unified Architecture for transpar-

ent communication. Also in future, the practical automation

tasks will be challenged by new industry demands and new

products and PLCopen will remain focusing on global har-

monization.

How can PLCopen help you ?By PLCopen’s activities of standardizing base functions, your

efficiency in automation control technology is increased,

your costs are reduced and you can focus on your core com-

petence. The PLCopen organization offers a solid base for

harmonizing principle technological challenges and a plat-

O que é a PLCopen?A PLCopen é uma organização independente que, tendo em

vista as necessidades do usuário, contribui para o aumento

da eficiência na automação industrial. Os membros dos vá-

rios ramos se concentram na harmonização da área da pro-

gramação de controle, bem como no desenvolvimento de

interfaces de aplicação e de software. Por ocasião da sua fun-

dação em 1992, os membros da PLCopen se concentraram

sobretudo nas especificações técnicas respeitantes à norma

CEI 61131-3, criando diretrizes e diretivas de execução uni-

formes com vista à redução dos custos na engenharia indus-

trial. O resultado deste trabalho se traduz, por exemplo, em

bibliotecas estandardizadas para diversas áreas de aplicação

e na criação de um nível de conformidade para idiomas de

programação e interfaces, promovendo um intercâmbio de

– graças à PLCopen – acabam sendo usados em muitas má-

quinas diferentes e outras áreas de aplicação.

Quais são as atividades atuais da PLCopen?Hoje em dia, são outros os desafios no mercado dos con-

troles industriais. A PLCopen acompanha as necessidades

do mercado, sendo seu núcleo de interesse a automação

eficiente através da definição de normas gerais. Os temas

atuais são: funções de controle de movimentos e seguran-

ça, formato de intercâmbio de dados XML para a estandar-

dização dos dados de base de projetos CEI em sistemas de

ских и программных интерфейсов. Компания основана в

1992 г. Члены PLCopen специализируются в основном на

технических спецификациях в области IEC 61131-3. Для

сокращения расходов в области промышленного инжи-

ниринга были разработаны единые нормы и требования

к рабочему процессу. Результатом этой работы являются,

например, стандартизованные библиотеки для различ-

ных областей применения, разработка уровня соответ-

ствия для языков программирования и интерфейсов

для улучшенного обмена программным обеспечением и

прозрачной коммуникации. Эксперты PLCopen образуют

технические комитеты, где определяют такие открытые

стандарты вместе с конечными пользователями.

Почему была образована PLC- open? PLCopen была основана в 1992 году, сразу после опубли-

Сейчас норма IEC 61131-3 является международно при-

знанным стандартом программирования, большое коли-

чество производителей программного и технического

обеспечения предлагают продукты на основе этого стан-

дара, который - благодаря PLCopen - находит свое от-

ражение в различном оборудовании и других областях

применения.

Какой деятельностью занимается PLCopen сегодня? На данный момент требования на рынке промышленных

систем управления сильно изменились. PLCopen следует

потребностям рынка, при этом основной сферой дея-

тельности является более эффективная автоматизация с

помощью определения общих стандартов. Актуальными

темами на сегодняшний день являются: система управ-

ной гармонизации и создание единого понимания.

• TC1 - Standards: provides the interface towards standardization bodies like IEC and OPC Foundation. • TC2 - Function Blocks: defines libraries of Function Blocks, with a focus to IEC 61131-3 development environments, like the Motion Control Specification, consisting of 5 parts: Part 1 - Basics, the basic document; Part 2 - Extensions, containing additional function blocks; Part 3 - User Guidelines, showing guidelines and examples for users; Part 4 - Coordinated Motion, focused to the coordinated multi-axes motion in 3D space; and Part 5 - Homing, which specifies the building blocks for dedicated homing procedures. • TC3 - Certification: in order to guarantee product conformance, several certification levels are specified, including test software. The future of PLCopenTrends like higher throughput, higher precision, better controlled qualities, higher efficiency, less waste, and better usage of the energy and scared resources will continue during the next decade.With the acceptance of the IEC 61131-3 standard all over the world, as well as the PLCopen additions like Motion Control, Safety, and XML for exchange and OPC UA mapping for communication, PLCopen has contributed to support these trends. However the work for PLCopen is not done. With a strong focus on increasing the efficiency of production lines while ex-tending their capabilities, Key Performance Indicators for the metrics, as well as simulation in virtual factories are becoming more and more accepted. For this more transparency is needed. Industrial control will stay in the heart of the production lines, playing an ever increasing role for the resulting end products.
