BUXTON’S Renaissance No wonder Buxton is one of the most popular tourist
destinations in the Peak District.
In recent years the spa town’s famous Georgian
architecture has provided an impressive backdrop to
a rich and vibrant growth in a whole range of cultural
activities. Add to this the stunning ornamental gardens,
a wealth of independent and high street shopping
opportunities, an ever expanding choice of cafes, bars
and restaurants, and you begin to see why there really
is something of a renaissance.
Buxton is known as the Gateway to the Peak District,
and it’s a great base for all that the national park has
to offer, but there’s so much going on in the town itself
that you might find yourself hard pressed to leave.
Welcome to Buxton
Out and AboutBuxton is also home to The Pavilion Gardens, 23
acres of award winning ornamental gardens including
serpentine walkways, children’s play areas, lake and
a miniature railway. There is a historic Winter Gardens
conservatory linking the Opera House with the main
complex. The building houses a café and espresso
coffee bar, the Pavilion Arts Centre (home to the Buxton
Adventure Festival held each Autumn), Art Café, Gallery
in the Gardens with a large retail area and the Tourist
Information Centre. Fairs and markets are held in the
Octagon throughout the year, or dine in the café and
enjoy a stroll around the gardens, maybe taking a ride on
the miniature steam train. Take the Heritage Trail (page
20) to find out more about these gems. Or for a trail with
a difference, pick up the Buxton Real Ale Trail from the
Tourist Information Centre.
The University of Derby’s Buxton campus is set under
the Devonshire Dome which is the largest unsupported
dome in the country with a diameter of 174ft and open to
visitors all year round. Guided tours, a bistro, fine dining,
and spa and beauty treatments (the Spa can be used on
its own or as part of a treatment package including the
luxury spa days) are available to book. A visit to view the
interior of The Dome is a must!
Wonder of the PeakHop on to Buxton’s latest mode of transport –
a Victorian styled electric Tram called Wonder of the
Peak which leaves hourly from in front of the Opera
House and takes you on a journey to showcase the very
best of the town, including Higher Buxton and Poole’s
Cavern. Our other tours include Well Dressing and
Buxton Pudding fair.

Steeped in HistoryFamous for its natural spring water and Georgian architecture, the town
was founded by the Romans who called it Aquae Arnemetiae or Spa of
the Goddess of the Grove. But it was the fifth Duke of Devonshire who
put Buxton on the tourist map with development in 1780’s - the centre
piece being the Georgian Crescent, soon to reopen as a 5 Star
Spa Hotel. The town’s rich history features Roman settlers, royal
prisoners, outlaws and noble benefactors.

Buxton Crescent HotelThermal Spa Company LimitedBuxton Crescent, one of the nation’s most important
buildings, was created by the Fifth Duke of
Devonshire with John Carr of York, one of the leading
architects of the 18th century to challenge Bath as a
thermal water spa resort.
Buxton Crescent Hotel
Linked to the Natural Baths, the building with ingenuity included
two hotels, one of which accommodated a majestic ballroom
and between them six lodging houses. Over 200 years ago, the
Duke and his architect’s vision foresaw today’s international
plethora of spa hotels but Buxton has a special advantage -
we are blessed with Grade 1 Georgian Architecture and Natural
Thermal Water.
Our project is to restore, update and reinterpret to the highest of
contemporary standards the concept borne of a great Georgian
partnership.
We hope to open the first hotel of its kind and certainly the
first to open its doors in Buxton for over a century. The heart of
Buxton will beat once more and the Town will really be “Buxton
Spa” attracting visitors from across the world. In this endeavour,
we are working with the Town to realise a shared ambition to
restore the architectural heritage and the Town’s reputation
for health and well-being alongside its gained reputation for
culture, art and hospitality delivered with glamour and panache.

THE SLOPES rising in front of the Crescent were designed by Sir Jeffry Wyatville in 1818 and modified by Joseph Paxton in 1840. If you follow the paths through the trees you will notice that together with the Crescent they form a complete circle.
At the top of the Slopes, stands the imposing TOWN HALL, designed by William Pollard in 1889.
THE MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY has since 1928 occupied part of the former Peak Hydropathic Hotel. There is a permanent gallery enhanced throughout the year by exhibitions, workshops and events.
THE MARKET PLACE, officially the highest in England, is ringed by some of the older buildings of the town which make up the Higher Buxton shopping area. It has an open market every Saturday and Tuesday. Here you will also find a variety of pubs, restaurants, wine bars and clubs.
The MARKET CROSS, relocated in 1813 to mark the Royal Charter awarded to Buxton Market is situated on the Town Hall Piazza.
A walk down High Street will bring you to ST ANNE’S CHURCH, built in 1625, just off Bath Road. A walk down Market Street from the Market Place leads directly to ST MARY’S, a fine example
of an Arts and Crafts building, built in 1914.
At the bottom of HALL BANK, an elegant line of town houses dating from the 1790s, you come onto BROAD WALK, a fashionable terrace of houses designed by a variety of prominent architects from the 1860s to the 1880s.
THE PAVILION GARDENS, designed by Edward Milner and opened in 1871 on 23 acres of land given by the 7th Duke of Devonshire, were restored to the original layout in 2000. Here, along the banks of the River Wye, are the imposing Bandstand, the ‘Snail Back’ garden, miniature railway and lakes filled with a variety of water birds and the six-metre fountain.
THE PAVILION, originally the Winter Gardens, now houses a cafe, coffee bar, conservatory, shops and the Pavilion Arts Centre restored to its former glory and re-opened as a flexible performance and conference venue in 2010.
THE OCTAGON, designed by Robert Rippon Duke was opened in 1876. It now houses a variety of fairs, auctions, concerts and events.
Next door, is the SPA SWIMMING POOL & FITNESS CENTRE.
THE OPERA HOUSE, designed by Frank Matcham, was opened in 1903 and restored in 1979. One of the finest provincial theatres, it presents.........

THE CRESCENT was built by the fifth Duke of Devonshire in 1784 to provide accommodation for visitors attracted to the town by the health-giving Spa. Designed by John Carr to rival the Royal Crescent at Bath, it was a Georgian ‘leisure centre’ with two hotels, apartments, shops, coffee and card rooms and a magnificent Assembly Room. Work is now in progress to restore this Grade 1 listed building to its former glory.
THE PUMP ROOM opposite was built in 1894 by Henry Currey as an addition to the ‘water treatments’ of the time and in use until 1981. It will be re-opened as part of the Crescent Development.
THE NATURAL BATHS, on the site of the original Roman Bath, was built between 1851 and 1854 and will form the centre piece of the Spa Pool and treatment rooms of the hotel.
To the right of the Crescent is the CAVENDISH ARCADE. Originally designed as a thermal bath in 1854, it now serves as a speciality shopping arcade. It features the original plunge bath and the interior still has most of its Minton tiling and a striking glass barrel vaulted ceiling by Brian Clark.
By the Cavendish Arcade is TURNER’S MEMORIAL, erected in 1879 at a cost of £224 in memory of a local benefactor Samuel Turner. Restored in 1994.
Presented to the Town in 1940, the prominent ST ANN’S WELL is constantly fed with Spring Water at a temperature of 28° Centigrade and stands next to the Pump Room.
Nearby, at the entrance to Spring Gardens, is THE CHILDREN’S WELL. Made of pink granite, it was presented to the Town in 1886.

ST JOHN’S CHURCH was designed by John White & Son in 1811 in a neo classical ‘Tuscan’ style. The church is not only a place of worship, but also home to the Buxton Musical Society. The designers were also responsible for the colonnaded town houses in THE SQUARE.
Dominating the Buxton skyline is the dome of the DEVONSHIRE CAMPUS of Derby University. The Dome, with a circumference of 46 metres, built by Robert Rippon Duke in 1882 for the Royal Devonshire Hospital, sits on the original building by John Carr which housed the horses and servants of the guests of the Crescent hotels. The general public are welcome to use the many facilities, including restaurant, coffee shop, hair salon, and holistic Spa.
Next door to the University is the imposing PALACE HOTEL. Completed in 1868 it was one of a number of grand hotels built for the numerous Spa visitors.
The great FAN WINDOW by Joseph Paxton is all that is left of the two Fan Windows that sat at the ends of the Railway Stations.
The fifth Duke of Devonshire built THE OLD COURT HOUSE which now houses a variety of speciality shops.
The oldest building in Buxton is part of THE OLD HALL HOTEL. It was originally built by the 6th Earl of Shrewsbury and housed the captive Mary, Queen of Scots, who visited a number of times between 1573 and 1584 to take the waters.
Just outside the town, is POOLE’S CAVERN, one of the seven Wonders of the Peak, extending for over 300 metres into the limestone of the hillside above the town. Visited by prehistoric cave dwellers, Celtic and Roman visitors, medieval outlaws and Elizabethan Royalty.
Poole’s Cavern has a wealth of history and legend as well as spectacular stalactite formations. Conducted tours are available all year round. Together with GO APE, an aerial forest Adventure through the trees of The Country Park, or a walk up to SOLOMON’S TEMPLE, there is much to do and see.
The Victorian CIRCULAR PARK ESTATE, like other parts of Buxton, was laid out by Joseph Paxton. In the middle is the Cricket Ground, ringed by houses of varied architectural styles including a former residence of Vera Britten and the LEE WOOD HOTEL.

A warmWElcome Buxton was built for visitors and the accommodation
reflects the long history of people coming to the heart
of the Peaks for a variety of reasons. As long ago as
the sixteenth century, visitors came to take the waters
at the ‘New Hall’, the oldest hotel in England. Now,
they come to meet friends, take in a show at the
Opera House or Arts Centre, attend a wedding, walk
in the hills or simply to relax on a short break and
take in the sights.
