- Characteristics:

- Door is prominent with a decorative pediment & pilasters

- Windows – symmetrical – double-hung

2. Tudor Style – 1890-1940- Characteristics:

- Half-timbered look- Steep gables at front & sides- Tall, narrow windows – placed in

groups with small panes- Massive chimney with chimney pots-

earthenware pipes at the top of the chimney- Stucco, stone or brick

3. Chateauesque Style 1880-1910 - Named after French Palaces – castle like features – very grandCharacteristics:

- Towers or turrets- Ornamental metal cresting- Elaborate Moldings- Relief Carvings- Arched windows and doors

- Schools, museums & clubhouses

4. Mission Styles 1890-1920- California – old mission churches- Characteristics:

- Arched doorways & windows- Tile Roofs- Parapets – low walls or railings along

balconies- Stucco- bell towers with turrets

1. Prairie – 1900-1920 – Frank Lloyd Wright

Characteristics

- Low pitched roofs with over hanging eaves

- Wide Porches

- Leaded glass windows

- Open designed interiors

- Square – 2 story with hip roofs

- Bring outside in – Natural Environment

2. Craftsman Style – 1905-1930

- Bungalow – small 1 ½ story house with an overhanging roof and covered porch

Characteristics:

- Low pitched gable roof

- Decorative beams or braces under eaves

- Full/partial porches with columns or pedestels extending to the ground

3. International Style – 1925- Present- Emphasize function – no decorative or ornamental designs- Asymmetrical designs – geometrical shapes- Flat roof- not commonly used for residential- Sculpture

Postwar Modern Style 1. Ranch – 1935- Present

- Long, low, one story

- low pitched gable or hip roof

- iron or wooden front porch

2. Contemporary Style 1950’s – 1970’s
