Your Ref. Bl/66/l.WH. Cambridge.Date 17.12.58. ]_g January, 1959.

Mr I. Glyn Thomas,University of the Witwatersrand,Johannesburg.

Dear Mr Glyn Thomas,Thank you for your letter of 17th December. The

suggestion that the funds should be given to the A.M.S.T.F. was considered by cur committee but unfortunately we are prevented from doing so by the terms of our trust deed. (The deed was required for income tax purposes, and commits us to offering the scholarship at Cambridge to a student from South Africa or the High Commission Territories).

It was felt that it would not be desirable to grant the scholarship to Mr van Melk, and we shall therefore readvertise in the High Commission Territories. We appreciate your position in this respect, and have approached the C.R.O. for their assistance.

Yours sincerely,Sgd. C.H. Feinstein,

Chairman CUASP.

Dear Madam,

I thank you for your letter of the 10th April, 19594- /-s 4- T m I 4 m A • ________ j » - - .which related to the Julius Robinson Educational and Charitable Trust Fund Scholarships* I assume that the scholarship in which you are interested is that which is available to African Medical students. This scholarship is intended to foster the medical education of Africans in a Southern African environment. It is to be awarded to the most meritorious African commencing studies for the M.B.,B.Ch. degree at the University and it may be held for the whole period of study for the degree, subject to satisfactory progress and it will have the value of £*+00 per annum. In selecting the scholar, evidence of qualities of character is taken into account, as well as intellectual ability as shown by the candidate’s previous scholastic record. It is a condition of the award of the scholarship that the scholar will be obliged, upon graduating as a meaical practitioner, to practise in South Africa or the Protectorates for a perioo. oi at least three years. The scholar for this year was chosen from among persons who had been accepted for admission to the Faculty of Medicine. As you know, admission to this Faculty is limited, and students are admitted on the basis of academic merit.

I trust that this information will enable you to reply to enquiries about the scholarship.

Yours faithfully

Dear Sheila,

We notice from a press cutting that a new/African scholarship fund of £30,000 has been set up by Mr. Julius Robinson/for overseas study in the fields of (a) Medicine (b) nuclear science and (c) music and drama.

I should be most grateful if you could find out as much as possible about it, and let me know.

I was instrumental in getting partial financial assistance from a private source for a Joseph Dhlamini who is at present studying music at the University of Capetown and apparently doing very well. He is the only African there, so that I imagine that he would stand a fairly good chance of getting help to do postgraduate study overseas.

We are sure to get enquiries regarding help for medical students, as there are so very many in Durban.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Mr. Allan,'He have forwarded the two copies of th» press release on

Indian scholarships to Golden City Post and The World. As the Star published it when it first came out two weeks ago we can only hope that the two other papers will not think it too late.
