Live performance is a powerful opportunity for young audiences to engage with stories about things that are familiar to them, and things that are unfamiliar. Live theatre allows us space and time to imagine, to question, and to consider our place in the world.

At Monkey Baa, we promote theatre, creativity and Arts-based learning because they make life more meaningful. The Arts contribute to a healthy and balanced society, stimulate our imaginations, create space for reflection, and encourage innovation in all of us. The tens of thousands of students and teachers who engage with Monkey Baa every year, in every state and territory in Australia, believe this too.

This year we celebrate 21 years of theatre making and cannot wait to see where the next 21 years will take us.

Read our Education Season brochure and see where you can join us – at the theatre? For an Arts-based workshop in your classroom? Perusing an online resource?

We would love to take you with us on our travels.

Eva and Sandie, and the Monkey Baa team

He’s the most misunderstood character in fairytale history. Put simply he has no friends. But then he does have incredibly sharp teeth, yellow eyes and his own ideas about personal hygiene, and he is the infamous Big Bad Wolf after all. No one likes him. Luckily, one girl is brave enough to double check this wolf’s bad press and an unlikely friendship is born.

From the makers of Grug and the Rainbow, this hilarious, table-turning tale will have you wondering why you were scared in the first place. Book early – Grug was a sell-out success.

If the performance is more than 4 school weeks away your deposit will be retained by Monkey Baa Theatre Company. When making a cancellation that is less than 4 school weeks away, your invoices (including the deposit) must be paid in full. Five young Aboriginal children are forcibly removed from their parents, brought up in a repressive children’s home and trained for domestic service and other menial jobs. Segregated from society from their earliest years, not all of them successfully manage their lives when released into the outside world,

The pain, poignancy and sheer desperation of their lives is seen through the children’s own eyes as they struggle to make sense of a world in which they have been told to forget their families, their homes and their language. This tender and moving story, awash with childlike humour, brings the tragic history of the Stolen Generations to the Australian stage.

Immerse yourself in a story about the importance of family, understanding and issues that have impacted strongly on Aboriginal families.

Contains coarse language and adult themes

Have you heard about our Teaching Artist program? More than 15,000 students have taken part in a Teaching Artist workshop, in over 500 communities around Australia.

Here’s how it works:

A theatre programs a season of a Monkey Baa show

Monkey Baa sends a tutor to run pre-show workshops in schools local to that theatre

The students and teachers then go and see the show in their local theatre

The show is followed by a Q&A session with the cast

And, a Monkey Baa Teacher Resource provides supporting classroom activities

Our Teaching Artist program fosters ownership, investment and a sense of excitement in students about their forthcoming excursion to the theatre. Monkey Baa has been running this workshop tour for 4 years, and we hear from teachers;

“A hands-on, fun engaging workshop that was a great preparation for the show”

“Thanks again SO SO SO much for sending the workshop out to us…this was the first time we could participate (as the travel cost…is the biggest cost to our kids). You do so much to help us get the kids these amazing experiences, we are truly grateful”

We are grateful to our touring partners, Arts on Tour, Create NSW and Australia Council for the Arts for their support in making this program possible. Thank you to our wonderful Teaching Artists. We are also grateful to the many presenters and venues we work with every year, for connecting us to your local education communities.

Monkey Baa has a team of exceptional Teaching

Artists. If you are interested in a tailored workshop experience
