From the Desk of Father Paul Thank you to all the parishioners, staff, and community at the Basilica of Saint Josaphat for your many prayers and kind words of support throughout the weeks of my father’s illness and at his death. In them I found much comfort and consolation. The flowers sent for his funeral from the Basilica were beautiful and so dignified. Your outpouring of condolences, expressions of sympathy, and Masses/Memorial contributions are an honor to my Dad and very much appreciated by me and my family. I am blessed by all of you. Thank you.

Rosebud Program “Blessing Bouquet”
Have you ever noticed the display in the Basilica by the 6th Street Side Altar? This is the Rosebud Program for Elizabeth Ministry, which is sponsored by our Christian Women.
This program helps in identifying and supporting women and their families during the tender times of bringing new life into the world. When you go to the table, you will see in a basket, different colored roses with cards attached. Each color represents a sacred life:
· Pink is to honor pregnancy.
· Red is to celebrate birth or adoption.
· Yellow is for prayers to conceive or suffering infertility.
· White is for the loss of baby through miscarriage, abortion, stillbirth, infant or child death.
· Purple is for Grandparents.
· Blue is for Troubled Times.
Write your prayer intention on the card and place it in the vase in front of the altar. Also, take a prayer card for personal mediation. Stop and discover this unique way to show respect for the dignity and worth of all life!
Help the Elderly and Disabled
Have you been looking for a way to give back and assist those who need a helping hand in their daily lives? Do you have a strong passion for helping the elderly and disabled in our communities?
Consider being a Homemaker for Catholic Charities. This is a great opportunity to make a positive impact on the daily lives of others. There is an immediate need for dedicated and compassionate individuals to work one-on-one with older adults and assist with a variety of housekeeping duties in the client’s home. Homemakers with Catholic Charities help the elderly and disabled remain independent, active, and involved in their community longer.
Catholic Charities offers homemaker services to clients living in Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties, weekdays between 8:00AM and 5:00PM. Make a difference, apply today. For more information call (414) 769-3400 or e-mail [email protected].
Keepin’ the Faith at Saint Camillus
Saint Camillus is in need for volunteers to help with transporting (pushing wheelchairs) our assisted living residents to and from Mass on Sundays at Guardian Angel and Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel (located on Campus). As you can imagine, many of our residents have an extremely strong faith, but are unable to transport themselves to Mass. We are excited to say that we have such great attendance to the services, that our Staff needs your help! The residents would greatly appreciate the assistance of being escorted to Mass and having someone to sit next to during the Mass. Both Masses are at 10:30AM, so commitment would be from 10:00AM – 12:00PM on Sundays. For more information, contact Lindsey Bartelt, Volunteer Coordinator, at (414) 259-4610 or [email protected].
Plan Ahead & Keep Us Up-to-Date! Are you planning to move or have you recently moved? IF YOU ARE MOVING OR HAVE MOVED TO A NEW LOCATION: 1. Give us the address and phone numbers for your new
location. 2. If you are planning the move, provide what date you will
begin to be at of your new address. 3. Let us know if you still wish to maintain your Basilica
parish membership.
Help us keep our census up-to-date! Contact the Parish Office with these changes at (414) 645-5623, x210 or send an e-mail to [email protected].

NO JOY IN THE DESTRUCTION OF THE LIVING Today’s readings offer a soaring affirmation of life. The author of the book of Wisdom assures us that God did not make death and does not rejoice in the death of any living thing. We are reminded that we have been made in God’s image, formed to be imperishable. In the face of all the death, illness, and destruction in the world, what are we to make of this claim? Clearly, it is our spirits that are called to eternal life. However, given the two stories in today’s Gospel passage from Mark, we have evidence that indeed, God does not rejoice in the death of our bodies.
When confronted with a hemorrhaging woman and the frightened father of a dying little girl, Jesus moves and speaks with confidence. “Be free!” he commands the long suffering woman. “Get up!” he calls out to the little girl.
FAITH AND TRUST, NOT FEAR Perhaps his statement to the grieving father when they learn of the child’s death is the crux of the whole question of life and death. Turning to the man and ignoring those who would have him leave because the girl had died, Jesus said, “Do not be afraid; just have faith” (Mark 5:36). Faith flies in the face of the evidence. The child was dead, but her father’s faith in Jesus saved her. The bleeding woman had exhausted all possible cures, but her faith in Jesus set her free.
God does not will our deaths either. Whatever holds us in deadly bondage is not of God. How often are we paralyzed by fear? Is it possible we can truly be set free by simply turning to Jesus with faith and trust?
Today’s Readings: Wisdom 1:13–15; 2:23–24; Psalm 30:2, 4–6, 11–13; 2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13–15; Mark 5:21–43 [21–24, 35b–43]

Today’s Gospel offers a rare framework – a story in a story. Most of the healing miracles are standalone encounters. One person approaches Jesus, demonstrates faith, and is healed. The evangelist tells the next story. This Gospel, however, is different. Jesus is on his way to heal one person, a young girl of twelve, and is interrupted on his journey by “a woman afflicted with hemorrhages.” She bravely approaches Jesus in a crowd, despite being ritually unclean from her bleeding, and stretches
out to touch his cloak. She is healed! Jesus meets her eye, confirms her faith, and continues on to resurrect the young girl.
Reading this passage, it might be easier to identify with one story – the long-suffering woman or the young, innocent girl – and to move past the other. But here they sit side by side. The girl is twelve. The woman has been suffering for twelve years. For the Gospel writers, number parallels have deep symbolic meaning.
Between the woman and the young girl, we are not one or the other. We are both. None of us had a perfect childhood, perfect families, or a perfect peer group. As we endure pain, disappointment, or unmet expectations, it can feel like a part of our childhood hopes have died. Our coping mechanisms, social adaptations, and hidden secrets can make us the “walking wounded” in some respects. Jesus wants to do more than simply staunch the bleeding. His healing hand makes dead things come alive. He awakens the dreams that are asleep. This process requires prayer, conversations with trusted community and spiritual mentors, and critical looks at difficult areas of our life. However, we can believe the words of our Lord. If we approach Jesus in faith, believing that he wants to heal and save, we, too, will hear his calming words spoken over the hurts of our life. “I say to you, arise!” “Go in peace.”
