King Saul is dead.

Ishbosheth is killed and beheaded.

David is King of Judah.

2 Samuel 5 1 Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh. 2 Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel.

Kinship with one another.David had been a hero of Israel even when

Saul was king.

That David would be king was foretold by God.

3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the LORD: and they anointed David king over Israel. 4 David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years.

Samuel anointed David as a teenager, signifying God’s choice of him as king.

Now the people anointed him, agreeing with God’s choice of David as king of Israel.

5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.

Israel will first have to take Jerusalem from the

Jebusites who live there.

Page 7: 2 samuel 5a the battle is the lord's

7

(TLB) 6 David now led his troops to Jerusalem to fight against the Jebusites who lived there. "You’ll never come in here," they told him. "Even the blind and lame could keep you out!" For they thought they were safe. 7 But David and his troops defeated them and captured the stronghold of Zion, now called the City of David.

The devil often thinks his strongholds are strong enough to stand against God.

He is always wrong.

Page 8: 2 samuel 5a the battle is the lord's

8

Devils build strongholds in the minds of God’s people, just as they had done physically in Jerusalem.

2 Corinthians 10 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: 4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds;) 5 Casting down imaginations (human reasoning; logic), and every high thing that exalteth itself against the Knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Page 9: 2 samuel 5a the battle is the lord's

9

Just as God defeated the stronghold of the Jebusites in Jerusalem, He will destroy the

strongholds of devils in the minds of God’s people.

Just agree with our God.He will fight the battle

within us.He will cast down the vain imaginations of our mind.

Romans 12 1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, Will of God.We best fight the spiritual battles within us by

letting the Word of God crowd out the vain imaginations of our mind.

(TLB) 8 When the insulting message from the defenders of the city reached David, he told his troops, "Go up through the water tunnel into the city and destroy those ’lame’ and ’blind’ Jebusites. How I hate them." (That is the origin of the saying, "Even the blind and the lame could conquer you!")

1 Chronicles 11:6 (TLB) So David captured the fortress of Zion, later called the City of David, and said to his men, "The first man to kill a Jebusite shall be made commander-in-chief!" Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was the first, so he became the general of David’s army.

9 So David dwelt in the fort, and called it the city of David. And David built round about from Millo and inward. 10 And David went on, and grew great, and the LORD God of hosts was with him.

Taking Jerusalem and making it his capital showed the world that David

was a king to be reckoned with.

Romans 8 (NIV) 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those He predestined, He also called; those He called, He also justified; those He justified, He also glorified. 31 What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?

That’s the whole secret of victory!Be on God’s side; agree with God.

11 And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters, and masons: and they built David an house. 12 And David perceived that the LORD had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for His people Israel's sake.

Hiram king of Tyre was a powerful king.

For him to recognize David in this way sent a message to the rest of the nations.

13 And David took him more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he was come from Hebron: and there were yet sons and daughters born to David. 14 And these be the names of those that were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shammua, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon, 15 Ibhar also, and Elishua, and Nepheg, and Japhia, 16 And Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphalet.

Even the man after God’s Own heart made mistakes, and this is one that

brought David much sorrow.

17 But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the hold. 18 The Philistines also came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.

Psalm 2:1 (TLB) What fools the nations are to rage against the Lord! How strange that men should try to outwit God!

Page 17: 2 samuel 5a the battle is the lord's

17

19 And David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines? wilt Thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand.

Prayer before battle Prayer before anything.

And wait for the answer.

20 And David came to Baalperazim, and David smote them there, and said, The LORD hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place Baalperazim. 21 And there they left their images, and David and his men burned them.

David didn’t take credit for the victory.

God gave the victory to Israel, and demonstrated that it was God’s

victory over their gods.

Page 19: 2 samuel 5a the battle is the lord's

19

22 And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. 23 And when David enquired of the LORD, He said, Thou shalt not go up; but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.

God gave David a different strategy this time.

God doesn’t always have us do things the same way.

Pray every time and get instructions.

Don’t get in a rut.

Page 20: 2 samuel 5a the battle is the lord's

20

24 And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines.

When the Holy Spirit moves, we move, and not before.

Move with the Spirit; neither ahead nor behind.

25 And David did so, as the LORD had commanded him; and smote the Philistines from Geba until thou come to Gazer.

Psalm 20:7 (KJV) Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the Name of the LORD our God. Be always on God’s

side.Agree
