The 2008 Samford softball team featuresa speedy, dynamic offense, an experi-enced defensive lineup and one of the

best pitchers in the Ohio Valley Conference. The combination of talent, desire and youthfulexuberance is a welcome fit at theBirmingham campus, and Samford’s expec-tations are high as the team enters the 2008campaign.

Under the leadership of sixth-year HeadCoach Beanie Ketcham, Samford is comingoff its best season in school history in 2007.Despite boasting a young roster and manyinexperienced players last year, Ketcham’sBulldogs rattled off a school-record 31

victories andfinished theseason with a31-23 overallrecord. InOVC play,Samford con-cluded its cam-paign as one of thehottest teamsin the

conference and rallied to win 11 of its final17 games.

“Last year was a nice surprise in howour team played down the stretch,” saidKetcham. “The new coaching staff really hadan impact on how our players did. Wechanged a lot of things, and the players reallyresponded, which had a lot to do with thesuccess that we had last season.”

In the last two seasons, Samford added apair of new assistant coaches, Erin Gallagherand John Garris. The new blood, along withKetcham’s veteran prowess, reenergized theBulldogs as they sped their way to an unfor-gettable season in 2007. Samford concludedOVC play as the third-place team in theconference standings. The Bulldogs earnedtheir eighth-straight 20-win season anddefeated UT Martin 4-1 in the OVCTournament.

In 2008, Samford’sgoal is not merely to winone game in the six-

team conference champion-ship, but to win the OVC

Tournament title and advance tothe NCAA Tournament.

In the preseason OVCpoll, which is voted on bythe league’s head coaches,Samford was picked tofinish fourth in the con-ference standings.“Most people onlylook at what happenedlast season when theyvote,” Ketcham said.“Hopefully, we’ll beable to use this tohave our team moti-vated to provethem wrong. We have a lotof room togrow asa

team, and we have the talent to finish firstand to win the conference.”

The Bulldogs have the roster to do it.Samford’s 2008 squad features three seniors, five juniors, three sophomores and sevenreturning starters. The Bulldogs also boast theexcitement and youthfulness of five highlytouted freshmen.

A trio of important players for theBulldogs this season will be juniorsStephanie Royall and Jessica Owens, andsophomore power hitter Amanda Barrs.Royall, Samford’s dominating pitcher fromMill Valley, Calif., earned first-team All-OVChonors in 2007.

Owens, who is one of the fastest playersin the OVC, ended the 2007 campaign on atear and was named to the OVC Tournamentteam. In three games in the OVC Tournamentlast season, she went five for 11 at the plateand was two for two in stolen base attempts.Owens swiped 19 bases in 2007 and tiedSamford’s record in the category.

Barrs was named to the conference’s All-Newcomer team. A true freshman last season, she powered a team-high seven home runsand finished the year with 31 RBIs and 28runs scored.

PITCHERSNot surprisingly, Samford’s pitching staff willbe anchored by Royall in 2008. The Bulldogs’junior hurler picked up a school-record 19victories in the circle last season and looks toreach even further heights this year. After onlytwo years at Samford, the Bulldogs’ 5-10right-hander is already ranked fourth onschool’s all-time strikeout list with a total of339 in her career.

Ketcham expects big things from Royallthis season and earlier named her as one ofSamford’s two team captains.

“Stephanie has the potential to be thebest pitcher in the conference,” said Ketcham.“Two things really helped her last season. Onewas her mental game and the other was hertoughness. She was tough when she got here, but she’s really matured from a mental stand-point. She has such a strong desire to improve

and get better, and she’s a fierce competitor.”Behind Royall on the depth chart are

talented freshmen Kayla Burris andMargaret Carter. Burris, a 5-5 hurler fromCordova, Tenn., competed for the Bulldogsduring the fall season and gained some keyexperience and maturity.

“Kayla demonstrated a lot of growththroughout the fall season. She finished theyear throwing really well against UAB. Shelearned a lot in the few games that shepitched. She’s learned how to hit her spotswith consistency.”

Ketcham expects Carter to pitch a lot ofinnings for the Bulldogs this season despiteCarter sitting out the fall with an injury. Sheis a standout prep pitcher from Palatka HighSchool in Welaka, Fla.

CATCHERSFor the second straight season, Samford’sroster boasts a pair of catchers, Tracey DeauxandWhitney Terry. Deaux, a senior, startedat the position in 52 of 54 games last seasonand will be penciled in as the starter. Thenative of Collierville, Tenn., is one of theBulldogs’ most consistent players.

“Tracey does a great job behind theplate,” Ketcham said. “She will be expected toanchor the infield and will be looked upon forleadership both on and off the field.”

Ketcham expects Terry to see moreplaying time in 2008. A sophomore native ofSan Jose, Calif., Terry is Samford’s mostimproved player this season and is beinggroomed for the starting position next year.

INFIELDERSThe biggest question mark for Samford thisseason is its infield. The Bulldogs possessenormously talented and skilled players ateach of the four positions, but for the mostpart, they are young and inexperienced.

Junior Kylie Harmon mostly likely willbe Samford’s starter at second base, while

sophomore Barrs is expected to return at firstbase. At the third base position, the Bulldogswelcome back Katie England to the hot cor-ner after she took a medical redshirt season ayear ago.

The key spot for Samford this season isat shortstop where true freshman AmandaJordan will be penciled in as the starter. Aprep standout from Apison, Tenn., Jordan isexpected to bring a ton of talent to theBulldogs both in the field and in the battingorder.

“Amanda Jordan is a very good athleteand brings a lot of tools to the table, but shealso has some huge shoes to fill,” saidKetcham. “We know that there still might be alittle bit of a learning curve out there.”

Juniors Rachael Reeves and KristyLawrence add depth to the infield thisseason. Reeves is a returning starter who isrecovering from an injury that slowed herdown a bit in the off-season. A year ago, shestarted in 18 games at second base and was anear-perfect nine of 10 in stolen baseattempts. Lawrence, a native of Sydney,Australia, is a first-year transfer fromWesternTexas Community College.

OUTFIELDERSSamford could boast the fastest outfield in theOVC this season. With Jeslyn Metcalf,Owens and Aaren Fisher staffing the threepositions, Ketcham fully expects the Bulldogsto be able to cover a lot of ground in 2008.Metcalf and Owens are great defensiveplayers and two of Samford’s top offensivestandouts.

Owens, a junior from Fort Walton Beach,Fla., led Samford with a .304 batting averagein 2007 and finished with a team-high 49 hits. She was also a near-perfect 19 of 20 in stolenbase attempts and helped the Bulldogs set anall-time season high with 87.

Metcalf, another speedster in Samford’soutfield, tallied 17 stolen bases in 2007 andwas thrown out only five times in 22 attempts. The senior native of Dothan, Ala., started 51games last season and helped jump-start theteam’s offensive attack from top of the lineup.

“Offensively, we’re going to try hittingJessica and Jeslyn 1-2 in the batting order. They will be a huge key to our offense,” saidKetcham. “When they are on, we are defi-nitely going to be tough to beat. We also havesome players in the middle of the order whocan hit for power and drive in some runs.”

Fisher is a highly talented freshman from

Henderson, Nev., who is expected to start inthe outfield this season. In high school, sheput up staggering offensive numbers andreceived first-team All-Nevada honors in2007. As a high school senior, Fisher led theLas Vegas area with a .600 batting average, five home runs and 21 runs batted in.

“Aaren is a great competitor, and she’svery intense,” Ketcham said. “If we can gether on the right track this season, she’s goingto do some damage.”

Two players who also will provide keydepth in the outfield are freshman JulieHandley and senior Emily Deaux. Handley isa native of Garden Grove, Calif. Deaux is oneof the Bulldogs’ best power hitters and isexpected to start at the designated playerposition.
