Our students took the opportunity to thoroughly clean up our playground and surrounding streets and park. The students did a fantastic job keeping our environment clean. Open communication between parents and teachers is vital in supporting each student reach their full potential and is a real focus at Gundagai Public. This term teachers are committed to touching base with families of every student in their class to begin establishing positive communication channels for 2020. Last week parents of our Kindergarten students took the time to attend our Best Start initial meetings. This week we extend a warm invitation to our Year 1-6 parents who are attending our Parent/Teacher Evening this Tuesday or catching up with teachers later in the week at pre-arranged times. We understand life is busy and not everyone could make the time to meet with their child’s teacher, so next week teachers will be making “touch base” phone calls to parents they haven’t spoken to this year. Please remember the school very much has an open door policy and you are most welcome to come and speak to your child’s teacher or the Principal at any time. Simply make an appointment at the office and we would be very happy to meet with you. Accessing the school website or Facebook page, downloading the Skoolbag App or using Class Dojo are other ways we have tried to ensure communication between home and school is readily available. “You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax all you need is a book!” – Dr. Seuss

This year we are making a consistent effort to encourage students to actively read more books. We are asking parents to support this by encouraging their children to read a little more at home. This week the Premiers Reading Challenge begins for 2020 and our Infants students will be taking home their first home readers to engage in the Read to 3 from 3 to 3 reading program.

HIGHLANDS SWIMMING CARNIVAL Gundagai Public had a great day at the Highlands swimming carnival in Tumut last Friday, with our representatives showing just how competitive they can be in the pool and as always, displaying a positive attitude and outstanding behaviour. Jack Lindley was named age champion, finishing first in the 50m freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and individual medley and second in breast stroke. James Smart was first in the 100m and 50m freestyle and second in butterfly. Clayton Rainbow came second in the 50m freestyle and butterfly. Gilbert Crane claimed second place in the 50m freestyle and backstroke. Boston Hayne was first in breast stroke, Jemima Hayne was second in 50m freestyle, Darcy Smart was first in the 50m freestyle and Claire Lindley was second in breast stroke. The relay teams were also extremely competitive with the junior boys finishing first by nearly a lap of the pool and the senior boys placing second. In addition, to the first and second place getters a number of students also finished third. The Riverina Carnival is being held in Albury on March 11 and it is wonderful to see so many students from Gundagai Public qualifying for this carnival.

PSSA CRICKET SELECTIONS Last Monday Zac Scott travelled to Deniliquin for PSSA cricket selection trials. Congratulations to Zac who was selected in the final squad of 24 boys. Zac will now attend two winter training sessions over the off season

before the final Riverina cricket team is named. It is great to see someone so passionate about cricket being given the opportunity to play in such a talented squad.

SWIMMING FOR SPORT This Friday is our last swimming for sport session this term. Students have really enjoyed the swimming program and taken advantage of the opportunity to learn to swim or improve their stroke correction and lap times. Next Friday our Athletics program commences in preparation for the school carnival being held early in Term 2.

RIVERINA SOCCER TRIALS Good luck to Nick Tait who travels to Cootamundra this Friday to trial for the Highlands/Cootamundra/ Young Boys Soccer team.

SCHOOL CRICKET KNOCKOUT The boys and girls cricket teams have been selected and are training hard during lunch times. The boys are set to play Murrumburrah Public on Monday 9 March in Gundagai. The girls are waiting for the result of another match. Stay tuned!
