Focus Area – Curriculum and Assessment

MILESTONE DECISIONS FOR CONSIDERATION

Choose high quality curricula and train teachers to use these curricula

• Use Department ELA and math curriculum recommendations4 to build your plan for K-12 math and K-12 ELA curricula.

• If deviating from the Department’s recommendation, use the Department’s instructional resource reviews5 to choose which curriculum resources to adopt.

• Based on this plan, determine which materials will need to be purchased and which materials should be discarded. Materials include textbooks, text sets, consumables, interventions, and assessments.

• Use Department recommended 14-15 ELA and math professional development5

support to determine which school based and district staff will participate in which of these trainings.

• Determine what additional trainings need to be accessed in addition to Department offerings.

• For other content areas, determine if any curriculum adjustments are necessary.

Use benchmark assessments at scheduled points in the year to assess student progress

Plan for state assessments

Ensure schools are technologically equipped to support curriculum, academics, and assessments

Specific to curriculum and assessment, the DOE has released:

- Curriculum, assessment, and professional development guidance - Curricular reviews - 6-8 ELA and math Guidebooks (Each district will receive three printed copies of

every Guidebook, each participant at the Teacher Leader Summit will receive one guidebook of their choice)

All materials can be found here: http://www.louisianabelieves.com/academics/2014-2015-curricular-package

Districts should aim to decide on their curriculum, assessment, and professional development, begin purchasing materials, and communicate their decisions to schools by May.

District Decision Key Next Steps

Currently Undecided

• Identify additional information needed• Possible solutions:

• Set up time with a writer of the program/vendor to learn more

• Set up time with a district who used the program

• Visit the district/classrooms of teachers using the program

• Work with network support team to learn more about resources shared

It is critical that schools, teachers, and students start the school year comfortable with their curriculum. To support this, districts can:

• Make curriculum decisions early and communicate by May with schools and principals.

• Create a plan for professional development that ensures (1) all DOE delivered training is redelivered to all math and ELA teachers in the districts, (2) set up additional PD where appropriate, (3) ensure effective collaboration structures are in place.

• Get the tools in the hands of teachers immediately following testing. Have teachers use a unit or the math tasks with students in May. This will: - Make better use of post testing time - Give teachers space to practice with their tools and better prepare them for the summer

training - Ensure students continue rich instructional practice to prepare them for their upcoming school

year

Teacher Leaders – Build a Cohort

Districts should build a strong, diverse, teacher leader cohort.

Considerations: • Every school has an expert • Math and ELA content knowledge expertise • Appropriate balance of principals, teachers, and district staff • For what specific support do districts need Teacher Leaders

Logistics: • District guidelines and allotments sent in newsletter February 25• Districts will need to identify one district point person to receive logistical

information and emails • Cohorts returned to LDOE March 25• All LDOE PD will only be available to Teacher Leaders

Later this spring we will use time on this call to highlight strong district plans for Teacher Leader training and redelivery.

Page 14: 2 Louisiana Believes The Department is providing districts increased, intensive support in preparation for the 14-15 school year. These calls bring together.

14Louisiana Believes

A complete PD calendar will be published later this month. In order to provide significantly more training for educators the LDOE will cover the following costs for all associated PD (including the June Teacher Leader event).

PD Costs

LDOE Pays For Districts Pay For

• Hosting and space for all events • Paying of high quality providers (e.g.

Eureka Math) • All logistics associated with the

event (no entry fee charged to districts)

• Full webinar access for set number of district seats with ongoing access to videos and online tools

• All travel and hotel costs • Food costs* • Substitute costs (although very few

sessions are held during the school year/day)

• Teacher reimbursements where required

*Some meals will be provided during the Teacher Leader Summit.

Using the Compass Dashboard to Assess Progress this Year

The Compass dashboard has been updated. It now includes student outcomes and teacher observation data to help leaders assess educator expectations.

The dashboard also includes SLT ratings, when available, and 2012-2013 value-added ratings. It will include final evaluation ratings when they are available.
