Among the many myths, legends and misconceptions of Bermuda is that it is associated with the Caribbean, which lies nearly 1 610 km to its south. What you will find is that this most isolated of island groups is quaintly English, with its cricket matches and afternoon teas.

The first settlement of Bermuda began at the north end of the archipelago in St. George. The town, deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the second-oldest English town in the New World, and for almost two centuries, was the capital of Bermuda. It is named for both Sir George Somers, the founder of Bermuda, and Saint George, the Patron Saint of England. Named Esmeraldas by the Spanish explorers who found the local natives bedecked with emeralds, this area of Ecuador is beautiful and lush. Rainforests, tropical vegetation and mangrove forests, together with rivers and dense foliage, make this province green in colour and in conservation efforts. The only inhabitants for centuries were of the Tumaco/La Tolita culture that spread over the modern borders of Colombia and northern Ecuador. Its wild and remote inland areas, accessible only by canoe, make Esmeraldas the ideal staging ground for an epic river safari.
