    2. GEBIRGSDIVISION2nd MOUNTAIN DIVISION

Ater the Anschluss (the incorporation o Austria intoGermany) 2. Gebirgsdivision was ormed rom the Austrian6th Division in Innsbruck on 1 April 1938 as part o

Wehrkreis XVIII(Military District 18). On 26 August 1939the division was mobilised and in September it took partin the Polish campaign as part o Heeresgruppe Sud (ArmyGroup South).

poland2. Gebirgsdivision ought alongside 1. Gebirgsdivision inPoland, their main goal being the capture o Lemberg (Lvov,Lviv), the Galician provincial capital and an important com-munications and rail hub. Te division entered Poland romKsmark (Kemarok) in Slovakia, marching on oot throughNida, Neu Sandec and Jasslo, capturing the Dukla Pass onthe way, beore reaching Lemberg. Tey made ast progressthrough the mountains and hilly terrain o the Slovakian andPolish border region, and once in Poland 2. Gebirgsdivisionquickly linked up with 1. Gebirgsdivision, who had taken anorthern approach across the border. By 11 September bothdivision had covered well over 240km (150 miles). On14September they had reached the oot hills around Lemberg.1. Gebirgsdivision ormed aKampgruppe to attack the city,

while the rest o the two divisions ormed a cordon aroundLemberg to prevent arriving Polish troops rom relieving thebesieged city. Fighting with the Polish garrison and reliev-ing orces was erce, but ater six days the Polish deendersnally surrendered, but only i they were allowed to sur-

render to the German Gebirgsjger and not to the recentlyarrived Soviet troops. Te victorious Gebirgsjgerthen had tohand the city over to the Soviets, who had belatedly joinedthe invasion o Poland.

norwayAter the Polish campaign 2. Gebirgsdivision and3. Gebirgsdivision were selected to take part in the invasiono Norway.3. Gebirgsdivisions target was Narvik in the northo Norway. One regiment was loaded aboard 10 Destroyerso the Kriegsmarine (German Navy) and headed north. TeGerman destroyers sunk two Norwegian coastal deence ships

beore entering Narvik Port and unloading the Gebirgsjger.

Te Norwegians surrendered and on 9 April 1940 the porto Narvik was in German hands. However, supplies wereshort, as only one supply ship had reached Narvik.

Te ollowing morning the German Destroyers were attackedby a eet o British Destroyers and two German ships weresunk. On 13 April the British attacked again, this time withheavy support rom the Battleship HMS Warspite and theremaining eight German Destroyers were sunk. Withouttheir naval support the Gebirgsjgerwere somewhat stranded.Te British and French had also landed troops 64km (40miles) to the north. With over 15,000 Allied troops closingon Narvik, the trapped Gebirgsjgerand Kriegsmarinesailorshad little choice but to ght and hope or relie. Despitethe rest o3. Gebirgsdivision racing to relieve their comrades, the Allies withdrew on 8 June, and Norway ormally sur-

rendered, beore deeating the isolated Gebirgsjger.2. Gebirgsdivision had meanwhile landed in rondheim, joining the rest o3. Gebirgsdivision in their attempt to relieveGebirgsjager-Regiment 139 in Narvik. With the Norwegiansurrender the division moved to the ar north to take upoccupation duties.

BarBarossaIn 1941 the division was in Lapland to participate inOperation Silberuchs (Silverox), the attack on the Soviet

Arctic as part o Operation Barbarossa. Teir target was theSoviet arctic port o Murmansk. As part o Gebirgsskorps

Nowegen (Mountain Corps Norway) they were once moreteamed with 3. Gebirgsdivision. Fighting through horribleMosquito inested terrain that consisted o barren rock, swampland, and dark dank orests, the Gebirgsjger initiallymade good progress, smashing through the Soviet deencesuntil reaching the River Liza in early July, when Sovietresistance began to stien. Te Soviets began to coun-terattack, but the Gebirgsjger held them. However, theorward momentum o the oensive had stumbled to a halt.

    3. Gebirgsdivision was replaced by6. Gebirgsdivision, whichormed with 2. Gebirgsdivision the XIX Gebirgskorps (19thMountain Corps).

northern FinlandDuring the winter the Soviets launched a major counter-o-ensive. Despite heavy casualties XIX Gebirgskorps held itsground throughout the Winter o 1941/42 and a stalematedeveloped in the sector. Minor raids and skirmishes werecarried out, but no heavy ghting occurred while both siderebuilt or the spring.

When Spring arrived, so did another major Soviet oensive.Te Soviet oensive combined land and seaborne assaults inan attempt to cut o and isolate elements o the Gebirgskorps.Te mountain troops held, but another Soviet attack almostsucceed, but the timely intervention o bad weather broughtall action to a halt. Te weather respite allowed the Germanstime to regroup and reorganise their deences.

1943 was spent once more in stalemate, with minor actionsand no major oensives. However, in the Summer o 1944the Soviets were in an oensive mood and the ar north wasnot ignored. Te Soviet oensive in Finland nally orcedthe Finns to the negotiation table and a peace treaty wassigned in September 1944.

In late 19442. Gebirgsdivision withdrew to Norway and thentranserred to Denmark, ater a ghting retreat against the

Finns, as the Finns ullled their treaty obligations to expelthe Germans rom Finland. In December 1944 the Division

was sent to Denmark to ret.

Front to reinorce the Colmar Pocket on the Franco-Germanborder in Alsace. Tey were stationed around the Neu-Brisach bridgehead in the northeast o the pocket.

Te French and Americans launched Operation Cheerul on20 January 1945, their aim was to clear the German orcesrom the pocket and secure crossing over the Rhine Riverinto Germany. Te attack was started in a heavy snowstorm, the sort o conditions the Gebirgsjgerwere well amiliar with

rom their ghting in Finland. Te attack around Mulhouseby the French 1er Corps dArmewas halted. However, theattack had successully drawn the German reserves south andthe French next attacked, two days later, the Erstein bulge,

which lay to the north, just south o Strasbourg.

    2. Gebirgsdivison came under attack rom French andAmerican orces on 24 January 1945. Gebirgsjger-Regiment136held the town o Jebsheim. Between 24 January and 2February a savage and bitter struggle or the town was ought,

with it changing hands three times in nine days o ghting.Te Gebirgsjger were not alone in their deence and weresupported by the Jagdpanther tank-hunters o654. Schwere

Panzerjgerabteilung. Tey aced the US 254th InantryRegiment (attached to the 3rd Inantry Division), French 5th

Armoured Division, Paratroopers,Foreign Legion, Moroccan cavalryand FFI troops. Te Americansand French nally clear the towno the last Gebirgsjger at 1500hours on 2 February. However,

    2. Gebirgsdivision still held thecountryside around the town andghting continued. Over the nextew days the Germans continued to

be pushed back in the pocket untilnally permission was granted byHitler or the Germans orces to

withdraw rom the Colmar Pocketacross the Rhine.

saarpFalzand trierTe division was next movednorth to the Saarpalz regionin February 1945 where it wasplaced in the reserve o 1. Armee.

    2. Gebirgsdivision replaced 559.Volksgrenadierdivision holdingBitche. Ater a short period o suc-cessul ghting most o the division

was moved by motorised transportto the area south o rier.

In late February the Americansbegan to push out o the SaarBrigdehead and advance towardsthe Rhine River. Fighting along-side 2. Gebirgsdivision was 212.Volksgrenadierdivision. An attack bythe US 76th Inantry Division drew

the Volksgrenadiers north awayrom rier leaving the city lightlydeended. Te American 94thInantry Division was then able toquickly take rier.

However, the Germans quickly organised a counterattackto take back the city. Initially256. Volksgrenadierdivision

was committed to hold any urther American advancebeore 2. Gebirgsdivision and 6. SS-Gebirgsdivison Nordattacked between 3 and 4 March orm Zer to the south orier. Te attack cleared some US inantry, but 2. Gebirgsdivisions Hetzer tank-hunters soon became embroiled in areght with the tank-destroyers o the 778th ank DestroyerBattalion. Finally, the2. Gebirgsdivision attack was halted byUS Artillery re.

Ater the attack, the division was able to hold their positionsuntil the middle o March, but suered heavy casualties. Teremnants o the division then retreated towards the Rhinenear Germersheim.

GermanyTis was ollowed by deensive battles in Southern Germanyin Wrttemberg where urther ghting almost destroyed thedivision. What was let o the division then retreated into theirol region in Austria where remnants surrendered to the

    Americans in May 1945.

    6. SS-GEBIRGSDIVISION NORD6TH SS MOUNTAIN DIVISION NORTH

BlackedelweissSS-Kampgruppe NORDwas ormed in February 1941 and

were rst deployed to Finland in June as a motorised inantry

division, where they were renamed SS-Division NORD. TeFinnish government was ofcially neutral at this time, but

within days o their arrival Operation Barbarossa commencedand Soviet bombers and artillery began conducting attacksagainst bordering Finnish towns. Finlands Continuation

War was renewed, and with Soviet orces reeling under theGerman assault, the Finns were quickly able to reclaim mosto their lost territory.

Te as yet untried SS-Division saw their rst combat in thenorthern sector as part o Operation Silberuchs (Silverox)to sever the Murmansk Railway. Here they were ordered torontally attack the heavily ortied Soviet position o Salla

but were bloodily repulsed. Tis position was later doubleenveloped by169. Inanteriedivision and the Finnish 6th Di-vision, orcing the Soviets to withdraw.

Ater their baptism by re, elements o NORD were tempo-rarily brought under Finnish command. Te German troopsbeneted greatly rom this close co-operation, sometimesFinnish platoons would work alongside German companiesand they gained invaluable experience in dealing with theterrain and winter conditions. On a strategic level they alsomade use o Finnish motti(small-scale encirclement) tacticsthat were ar superior to the wider encirclements common toGerman doctrine due to the heavily wooded terrain. By the

end o the year the Soviets had been orced back to heavilydeended strongpoints and with Finlands small population(3.5 million) the cost o high attrition battles would resultin the Murmansk railway remaining rmly under Sovietcontrol.

Te division slowly received reinorcements which werelargely needed due to casualties caused by the bitterly cold

winter conditions. Tese were oten Volksdeutscheor ethnicGermans that helped evolve NORD into a multi-ethnic SS-Division. In 1942 both sides begun construction o sturdydeensive positions and operations were conducted to attackeach others supply lines with the Soviets aided by partisans.

Te Soviets launched their spring oensive in late Aprilwhich endeavoured to cut o the main German supply routeemploying the 23rd Guards Division, 8th Ski Brigade and80th Independent Brigade. Successul employment omottitactics alongside Finnish Division J countered this Sovietthrust while inicting heavy casualties.

ss-GeBirGsdivisionIn June the division was ofcially reorganised as a reinorcedmountain division (SS-Gerbirgsdivision Nord). Tis was pri-

marily a change or logistical reasons rather than the require-ment to ght in alpine terrain. Te equipment however wasextremely useul and skis and sleds increased winter mobilitygreatly. Small groups aided by Finnish troops would conductraids and demolish railway tracks which were duly repairedby Soviet orced labour camps.

Te stalemate situation largely continued through 1943.Te division received their nal designation as 6. SS-Gerbirgsdivision Nord. Tis comprised SS-Gerbirgsjger-Regiment 11 Reinhard Heydrich and SS-Gerbirgsjger-Regiment 12 Michael Gaimair and also included twovolunteer Norwegian units on the grounds that they were

only to be employed against the Communist orces.

By 1944 the Soviets staged a major oensive on the Lagoda-Karelia ront which caused Finland to sue or a separatepeace. 6. SS Gerbirgs thereore made plans to conduct aphased withdrawal (Operation Birke). Te Soviets demandedthat the Finns orcibly intern all German troops ater 15September, reghts broke out between the German rear-guard and Finnish orces and they nally let Finnish soilin early November. Ater 3 years o ghting shoulder toshoulder with the Finns they parted as respected oes, butmany were bitter about the apparent betrayal o their closeally.

nordwindTe division headed south through Norway and wouldeventually complete a 1,600 kilometre (1,000 mile) oottrek, briey stopping in Denmark to receive new weaponsand equipment. It was only now that they were issued withMG42 machine guns and each rie battalion received anew heavy company consisting o a platoon o two 7.5cminantry guns and another o our 12cm mortars.

Tese units would require training while the bulk o thedivision was urgently needed or deployment in conjunction

with the Wacht am Rhein (Watch on the Rhine or Ardennes)oensive begun in mid December 1944. Tis delay in trans-portation o units caused the division to only be committedpiecemeal or the later Nordwindoperation in the new year

just as the Ardennes campaign was beginning to lose itsimpetus. Tey were however considered to be the reshestGerman orce available in the West at the time.

Operation Nordwindbegan on New Years Day 1945 and wasthe last German oensive in the West. 6. SS-GerbirgsdivisionNordwas tasked with the seizure o the town Wingen-sur-Moder and ultimately to open the Saverne Pass to allow anarmoured breakthrough into the Rhine Valley. Tey receivedhasty training with their newly acquired panzerausts andthe lead elements began to inltrate on 1 January. Temain combat elements available were the 1st and 3rd bat-talions o SS-Gerbirgsjger-Regiment 12. Tis orce wasdesignated Kampgruppe Schreiber and were attached to

    361. Volksgrenadierdivision.

Te attack on Wingen-sur-Moder began on 4 January.Te town was deended by the 179th Regiment o the 45thTunderbird Division. Ater a brie ght the town wasoverrun with approximately 300 Americans captured. Acounterattack in the belie that a orce o only around 50Germans had occupied the town was easily repulsed by theorce o 725 German troops. Te Germans however wereunable to establish radio contact with headquarters to requesturgent reinorcements to exploit this and the Americans soon

surrounded the town.roops rom 276th Regiment (70th railblazers Division)attacked on 5 January, but ailed to dislodge the deenders.Kampgruppe Schreiber were now running low on suppliesand ammunition. When contact with headquarters wasnally made the orders were to withdraw, but only a orce o205 managed to reach riendly lines. Te high tidemark oOperation Nordwindhad been reached without signicantgain or the sacrices made.

With American orces taking to the oensive troops o the157th Inantry Regiment, 45th Division were ordered to seizethe high ground near Reipertswiller on 14 January. Here SS-Gerbirgsjger-Regiment 11 was able to entrap six companies

with classic motti tactics. Desperate attempts to escape orrelieve these orces were repelled by the Germans until a sur-render ultimatum was agreed and 450 men were led away tocaptivity. With recent well publicised events o prisoner mas-sacres still resh in their minds the Americans were greatlyrelieved by their captors humane treatment. German orces

were now ully on the deensive and would soon be orced toght on their own soil.

deFenceoFthe reichAter suering under the Americans complete aerialdominance and overwhelming artillery, the SS troops hadsustained heavy losses. Tey received paltry replacementsand were ordered to recapture the town o rier on theMoselle River in March, but were thwarted by the US 94 thPilgrim Division. Te American 3rd and 7th Armies oen-sive in the Saar-Palantine region was rapid and elements o

NORD were largely cut-o and bypassed, only remnants oSS-Gerbirgsjger-Regiment 11 were able to cross the RhineRiver as the last combat eective unit o the division. Tey

were involved in a series o costly delaying actions until theremaining orce estimated at 800 were captured by the 5 thRed Diamond and 71st Red Circle Divisions in early April1945 near Frankurt.

At the start o the game, place a Full Salvo marker witha platoon equipped with 30cm NW42 Super-heavyRockets. Remove this marker ater fring an ArtilleryBombardment.

I a platoon with Super-heavy Rockets does not have a FullSalvo marker when it fres an Artillery Bombardment, rolla Skill Test or each Rocket Launcher able to fre in theBombardment. Only those that pass the Skill Test can freas part o the Bombardment.

Place a Full Salvo marker on a platoon with Super-heavyRockets at the end o any Shooting Step in which every

Rocket Launcher in the platoon was able to fre an ArtilleryBombardment, but none did so.

Five Volks-Werer Brigaden (Peoples Rocket LauncherBrigades) supported the German orces during the Ardennesoensive. Each brigade consisted o two regiments withsix batteries o 15cm NW41 rocket launchers and threeheavy batteries o either 21cm NW42 or 30cm NW42rocket launchers, depending on i it was the rst or secondbattalion.

Te biggest advantage oNebelwererrocket launchers is theirability to saturate a wide area quickly with high-explosiverounds. Tey are ideal or pinning down an enemy position

while attacking orces approach or the assault.

sUper-heavyrocketsTe massive 30cm rockets used by the NW42 rocket launchersare slow to load and thereore the ull battery is not alwaysavailable to re on command. A Volks Rocket LauncherBattery equipped with 30cm NW42 rocket launchers uses theSuper-heavy Rockets special rule.
