The senior competition ended in a close finish with one point difference between the winners, Ambleside and Hout Bay High who won R2 000 and R1 250 respectively. The three other schools, Silikamva High, the International School of Hout Bay and Camps Bay High shared the third prize of R750. The winner of the junior quiz and R2 000 was Ambleside Primary with runners-up Kronendal and Llan- dudno winning R1 250 and R750 respectively. There were prizes to the value of R16 000 sponsored by Sentinel News, complementary tickets to the Two Oceans Aquarium, as well as other smaller prizes donated by local busi- nesses for individual EnviroArt win- ners. All school team members went home with a gift of two complemen- tary tickets for the Two Oceans Aquar- ium and their own EnviroQuiz reusable shopping bag filled with a selection of goodies. Kronendal principal, Nathan Lev- endal, opened this year’s event by thanking Bronwen Lankers-Byrne, Thrive’s co-ordinator and organiser, for assisting Hout Bay, Llandudno and Camps Bay schools to keep focus on the importance of the environment . There was a buzz of excitement as the teams from the seven competing schools – Kronendal, Llandudno, Sen- tinel, Ambleside, the International School of Hout Bay, Hout Bay High, Silikamva High and Camps Bay High – took their seats for the start of the quiz. The competitive spirit was strong, among the senior schools particu- larly, and the loud ring of the buzzers kept quiz master Andy Le May and judges, Russell Stephens, (head of education at the Two Oceans Aquar- ium) and Jaci van Niekerk (Depart- ment of Environmental and Geo- graphical Science University of Cape Town) on their toes. In the EnviroArt competition, judged by Lissa Claassens, Chuma Maweni and Katrine Claassens, pupils were inspired to produce insightful and moving artworks with a strong message about saving the world’s seas. The use of recycled waste, much of it collected on Hout Bay beach, had been transformed into ingenious mes- sages about protecting the oceans and coastlines. The judges were impressed with the Penguin made by Silikamva High and the beautiful mysterious Mer- maid made by Kronendal Primary. Most impressive and winner of the Senior EnviroArt prize of R2 000 was the large globe made by Hout Bay High in the entrance to the assembly hall. This work summed up the mes- sage of the event: our oceans are immense and yet there is so much pol- lution and damage as a result of man’s overfishing, oil spills, the nuclear disaster of Fukushima, ice caps melting and a plastic vortex the size of the Western Cape in the mid- dle of the Pacific. Towards the end of the afternoon, Hayley McLellan, campaign organiser for the Aquarium’s Rethink the Bag Campaign (RTB) gave a powerful presentation with reasons why the plastic bag should be banned in South Africa, as it has been banned in several other countries. She stated that the majority of retailers in Hout Bay have agreed to not sell plastic shopping bags on Thursday, July 3, International Plastic Bag free day The prize winning EnviroArt works and EnviroQuiz questions and answers will be on display in the Hout Bay Village Library, Melkhout Cres- cent for the rest of June.
