There were prizes to the value ofR16 000 sponsored by Sentinel News, complementary tickets to the TwoOceans Aquarium, as well as othersmaller prizes donated by local busi-nesses for individual EnviroArt win-ners.
All school team members wenthome with a gift of two complemen-tary tickets for the Two Oceans Aquar-ium and their own EnviroQuizreusable shopping bag filled with aselection of goodies.
Kronendal principal, Nathan Lev-endal, opened this year’s event bythanking Bronwen Lankers-Byrne,Thrive’s co-ordinator and organiser, for assisting Hout Bay, Llandudno andCamps Bay schools to keep focus onthe importance of the environment .
There was a buzz of excitement asthe teams from the seven competingschools – Kronendal, Llandudno, Sen-tinel, Ambleside, the InternationalSchool of Hout Bay, Hout Bay High,Silikamva High and Camps Bay High– took their seats for the start of thequiz.
The competitive spirit was strong, among the senior schools particu-larly, and the loud ring of the buzzerskept quiz master Andy Le May andjudges, Russell Stephens, (head of
education at the Two Oceans Aquar-ium) and Jaci van Niekerk (Depart-ment of Environmental and Geo-graphical Science University of CapeTown) on their toes.
In the EnviroArt competition, judged by Lissa Claassens, ChumaMaweni and Katrine Claassens, pupilswere inspired to produce insightfuland moving artworks with a strongmessage about saving the world’s seas.
The use of recycled waste, much ofit collected on Hout Bay beach, hadbeen transformed into ingenious mes-sages about protecting the oceansand coastlines.
The judges were impressed withthe Penguin made by Silikamva Highand the beautiful mysterious Mer-maid made by Kronendal Primary.
Most impressive and winner of theSenior EnviroArt prize of R2 000 wasthe large globe made by Hout BayHigh in the entrance to the assemblyhall. This work summed up the mes-sage of the event: our oceans areimmense and yet there is so much pol-lution and damage as a result ofman’s overfishing, oil spills, thenuclear disaster of Fukushima, icecaps melting and a plastic vortex thesize of the Western Cape in the mid-dle of the Pacific.
Towards the end of the afternoon,Hayley McLellan, campaign organiserfor the Aquarium’s Rethink the BagCampaign (RTB) gave a powerfulpresentation with reasons why theplastic bag should be banned in SouthAfrica, as it has been banned in severalother countries.
