2 Day Needle Painting Class with Tanja Berlin

The committee can choose two of the designs from pages 1 – 5. Tanja will teach both designs in the 2-day

class breaking up the class for demonstrations for the particular design that the students are working on.

The student will work one of the two designs chosen.

Experienced stitchers with no needle painting experience can work the intermediate designs.

Beginners –Bingo Blue Blotch Pansy

The pansy is worked in DMC embroidery cotton using

one single strand in the needle at a time. The

embroidery blends a range of three greens for the

leaves and five blues and black for the petals to create

a realistic flower. The embroidery is worked on 100%

cotton fabric.

NEEDLE PAINTING

For this two day class the committee can choose two of the needle painting designs. Tanja will teach both

designs in the two day class, breaking up the class into the designs and demonstrating the stitches for the

particular design the student is working on.

Experienced stitchers with no needle painting experience can work the intermediate designs.

The student will work one of the two designs in the class.

In this two day class the student will work the needle painting design using a single strand of DMC embroidery

floss in the needle at one time, in the method of long and short stitch.

This is an intriguing technique, using the threads as your paints on a closely woven fabric to create a realistic

picture.

Several professional stitching techniques will be covered when we work the design i.e. starting and finishing of

threads, the use of a split stitch line and working the design as a 3-dimensional piece.

Different embroidery stitches will be used i.e. split stitch, stem stitch, satin stitch, and long and short.

Most importantly, the technique of blending long and short stitches so that they shade beautifully and how to

position the stitches so that they lay smooth will be covered in the class.

The student goes home with all the information required to complete the embroidery.

STUDENT SUPPLY LIST NEEDLE PAINTING

What the student needs to bring:

A sharp pair of small embroidery scissors.

A 9 inch by 9 inch or 10 inch by 10 inch stretcher bar embroidery frame for the Pansies, Wild Rose,

Baby Burrowing Owl, Red Poll and Red Fox, (to pin a 11 inch by 11 inch piece of fabric onto).

A 10 inch by 11 inch stretcher bar embroidery frame for the Iris (to pin a 11 inch by 13 inch piece of

fabric onto).

A 10 inch by 12 inch stretcher bar embroidery frame for the Wild Rabbit, Jack Rabbit and the Blue

Bonnet (to pin a 11 inch by 14 inch piece of fabric onto).

A Stretcher bar frame is the preferred frame to work the embroidery in as it is quick to assemble and the

fabric can be pulled very tight in the frame which is extremely important with this technique.

A packet of brass thumb tacks to pin fabric to frame.

A Mechanical HB pencil nib size 0.5 or 0.7 or a sharp HB pencil: To draw stitch direction lines onto the

fabric.

Light and Magnifier. I recommend bringing a light with an extension cord and a magnifier to enable you to

see the stitches clearly.
