All arrangements are in place to cel- ebrate the country’s 64th Independence Day under the patron- age of President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Sri Sambuddhatva Jayanthi Mawatha in Anuradhapura. This year’s theme of the Independence Day is “Let us build up a miraculous motherland.” This is the second time a national ceremony to celebrate the country’s independence is held in the North Central Province. The last time the Independence Day was commemorated in Anuradhapura was in 1980. The Government took this decision to enable the rural population to wit- ness important national events in their respective districts, Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister W.D.J. Senewiratne said yes- terday (27) at a press conference held at the Government Information Department. “Last year, the 63rd Independence Day was held in Kataragama, in the Uva Province. Kataragama as well as Anuradhapura are historical places and played an important role in the country’s history,” he said. He also said “We will not compro- mise the quality and the pageants although the Independence Day cele- brations are held in rural areas.” He said that a special transport serv- ice would be launched by the Government for the benefit of the peo- ple coming from adjacent districts. “More than 2552 artists representing all districts would take part in the cul- tural show. In addition some 2600 per- sonnel from the three armed forces, Police and Civil Defense Force will parade,” he added. He also added that several develop- ment work at a cost of Rs 21, 000 mil- lion have been allocated to be carried out covering the entire district. Meanwhile, the sixth Deyata Kirula National Development Exhibition is being held in Oya Maduwa in the Anuradhapura district parallel to the Independence Day celebrations. He stated that the renovation of irri- gation tanks and reservoirs, roadways, electricity, hospitals and other common facilities are the projects already iden- tified and being carried out at the moment in the district that would bring benefits to the people of the district and all projects would be completed before the main ceremony on February 4. Religious ceremonies will be held in Colombo to mark the 64th Independence Day from February 2. An associate of a suspect held in con- nection with the assassination of Southern Provincial Council Minister Danny Hittetiyage a few years ago is in custody over an alleged extortion rack- et. Karandeniya police nabbed the sus- pect in the act of receiving a parcel containing Rs. 50,000 from a busi- nessman. Following a complaint lodged by the businessman that Sunil Premaratne alias Eta Indika held at the Galle remand prison had demanded Rs. 300,000 from him, the police laid a trap for the master- mind’s accomplice. After advising the complainant to meet the man, who would come to collect the money on behalf of Eta Indika, the police pounced on the suspect as he was accepting the money. The businessman had persuaded Eta Indika to accept part of the money as he was not in a position to pay Rs. 300,000. The police also took into custody a three wheeler, in which the suspect travelled. The police said that Eta Indika, who had been in remand at the Galle prison for three years, had called the business- men using a mobile phone and demand- ed the money.
