All arrangements are in place to cel-ebrate the country’s 64thIndependence Day under the patron-age of President Mahinda Rajapaksaat Sri Sambuddhatva JayanthiMawatha in Anuradhapura.
This year’s theme of theIndependence Day is “Let us build up amiraculous motherland.” This is thesecond time a national ceremony tocelebrate the country’s independenceis held in the North Central Province.The last time the Independence Daywas commemorated in Anuradhapurawas in 1980.
The Government took this decisionto enable the rural population to wit-ness important national events intheir respective districts, PublicAdministration and Home AffairsMinister W.D.J. Senewiratne said yes-terday (27) at a press conference held
at the Government InformationDepartment.
“Last year, the 63rd IndependenceDay was held in Kataragama, in theUva Province. Kataragama as well asAnuradhapura are historical placesand played an important role in thecountry’s history,” he said.
He also said “We will not compro-mise the quality and the pageantsalthough the Independence Day cele-brations are held in rural areas.”
He said that a special transport serv-ice would be launched by theGovernment for the benefit of the peo-ple coming from adjacent districts.
“More than 2552 artists representingall districts would take part in the cul-tural show. In addition some 2600 per-sonnel from the three armed forces,Police and Civil Defense Force willparade,” he added.
He also added that several develop-ment work at a cost of Rs 21, 000 mil-lion have been allocated to be carriedout covering the entire district.Meanwhile, the sixth Deyata KirulaNational Development Exhibition isbeing held in Oya Maduwa in theAnuradhapura district parallel to theIndependence Day celebrations.
He stated that the renovation of irri-gation tanks and reservoirs, roadways,electricity, hospitals and other commonfacilities are the projects already iden-tified and being carried out at themoment in the district that would bringbenefits to the people of the districtand all projects would be completedbefore the main ceremony on February4.
Religious ceremonies will be held inColombo to mark the 64thIndependence Day from February 2.

Karandeniya police nabbed the sus-pect in the act of receiving a parcelcontaining Rs. 50,000 from a busi-nessman.
Following a complaint lodged bythe businessman that SunilPremaratne alias Eta Indika held atthe Galle remand prison haddemanded Rs. 300,000 from him, thepolice laid a trap for the master-mind’s accomplice. After advisingthe complainant to meet the man,who would come to collect themoney on behalf of Eta Indika, thepolice pounced on the suspect as hewas accepting the money.
The businessman had persuadedEta Indika to accept part of themoney as he was not in a positionto pay Rs. 300,000. The police also
took into custody a three wheeler, inwhich the suspect travelled.
The police said that Eta Indika, whohad been in remand at the Galle prisonfor three years, had called the business-men using a mobile phone and demand-ed the money.

The Minister made thisobservation while address-ing the visiting envoy dur-ing bilateral talks on elec-trification schemes for thebenefit of 300,000 familieswith electricity and finan-cial assistance for 100power projects aimed atattaining the goal of elec-tricity for all before the endof this year.
