A resident of Velacheri, Prakash says this is no easy task. He shares his journey and also invites like- minded people to join his team. ‘While perusing engineering, my friends suggested that I join an NGO as it would help me in high- er studies. After some research, I came across Bhumi and their projects. I joined them in 2014. I was part of their Little Einstein’s - Maths project, which was aimed at delivering mathematical knowledge to children from weaker sections of the society.’ Following this, Prakash under- went several stages of training be- fore being able to teach children in weekends. ‘Once I started teaching them, they started to show love and affection on me. Some of them started say- ing ‘We will study with only Prakash anna’ to other volunteers’. ‘As I had less exposure in teach- ing, I started visiting other centres. During my visits, I came across var- ious children. In order to groom and uplift them, I applied for lead role so that I can be one of the driving factors. Now I am one of the lead- ers and my aim is to teach math in unconventional and practical methods,’ says Prakash and adds that his team is trying by motivating children to achieve greater heights. ‘Most of these children attend reg- ular school but the standard of edu- cation they get may or may not be up to the mark,’ says Prakash and adds, ‘We pitch in here, in terms of the quality. The way we teach these children is different from normal conventional methods.’ For this, the team has mobilised resources like kits and other inno- vative teaching materials. ‘We enact dramas, puppet shows, games, etc. With these materials we teach math funda- mentals. The children grab the concepts easily and in an effec- tive way,’ he adds. Prakash insists that a proper en- gaging method will help children concentrate. ‘There needs to be a proper bond between students and volunteers. This is a key factor to keep the classes alive.’ ‘Now our project has 100 plus vol- unteers visiting around 10 orphan- ages in Chennai covering upto 200 children. This is not a single hand- ed achievement, as it involves few other leaders like me and a huge team of dedicated volunteers’, he concludes. Those wishing to join Prakash and his team can reach him at 9841110366 or prakash@bhumi. ngo. -NT Bureau A wild life Chrompet youngster is an animal activist I n these times of increasing cru- elty to animals, people like Nis- hanth Ravi are rays of hope. Speaking on his journey, he says, ‘When I was studying, my hostel was surrounded with greenery, lakes and mountains. All this attracted snakes which slithered across the compound, but were killed by those at school. It was not a pleasant sight at all. So I took the initiative of rescuing and letting them free’.The 25-year-old who studied Chemical Engineering, says, ‘I was sent to Hyderabad in my class 11 where I developed an interest towards wild- life conservation and saving the environment’. ‘After this, I joined as a volunteer in the Madras Croco- dile Bank and I have been a core member in the Students Sea Turtle Conservation Network since 2008. These activities helped me acquire knowledge in handling reptiles’. Nishanth has saved a total of 10,000 animals, including 6,500 reptiles, across the country. ‘I regularly receive 20 to 25 distress calls to save wild animals every- day. My team has rescued numer- ous animals including rhinos and elephants’, he notes. Running a NGO called SENG, ‘Save Earth for Next Generation’, he states, ‘We take an initiative to clear reserved forests in and around the city. Recently, we cleared Nan- mangalam forest reserve in Meda- vakkam with the help of 491 vol- unteers. Apart from this, we clean beaches before turtle conservation programmes’. On the importance of saving the environment, he says, ‘Awareness is low in our country, All our actions are causing 99 per cent damages to our mother earth. We just do one per cent to compensate our wrong deeds. This is insufficient as we are causing damages in a rapid man- ner. We need to educate our school and college students and bring more awareness about conservation’. ‘Our team has conducted around 350 campaigns in various schools across the country. We want to catch them young and explain that this is also a promising career. So- cial media helps us connect. We get calls for help regarding medi- cal assistance or to set up shelters via social pages. It helps us to stay connected’, he adds. On the lucra- tiveness of the profession, Nishanth says, ‘Initially, I faced few struggles to lead a good life with the money I earned in this field. But later, things started looking upwards as there are very few experts in wildlife and conservation in the country. There are specific demands that this field calls for. We can certainly get good returns through this’. For more details, contact Nishanth Ravi at 78450 18969. -NT Bureau Nishanth Ravi Prakash Ravi
