In.36.seasons,.Groden.has.amassed.an.overall.record.of.581-261-4...He.has.posted.a.319-107-4.record.as.the.women’s.coach.and.262-154.as.the.men’s.coach...Groden.is.the.first.NCAA.head.coach.to.record.200.wins.with.both.a.men’s.and.women’s.program.at.the.same.institution...He.enters.the.2007.season.with.the.second.most.all-time.wins.as.a.college.swim.coach,.trailing.former.North.Carolina.Head.Coach.Frank.Comfort,.who.finished.with.578.wins...Groden.holds.the.NCAA.record.for.most.wins.by.a.swimming.head.coach.at.the.same.college.

On.Nov..22,.2003,.Groden.earned.his.500th.career.win.when.BC.defeated.UNH...On.Jan..17,.2004,.BC.topped.both.the.men’s.and.women’s.squads.of.URI,.for.Groden’s.501st.and.502nd.career.victories...These.two.wins.equaled.and.passed.Coach.John.“Snooks”.Kelley.as.Boston.College’s.all-time.leader.in.wins.in.any.sport...Snooks.was.instrumental.in.securing.Groden’s.job.as.pool.director.at.BC.after.his.graduation...Also,.when.Snooks.coached.his.first.hockey.team.at.BC.during.the.1932-33.season,.Groden’s.father,.Harold.(’35).was.on.the.team.

Groden.has.led.the.women’s.team.to.22.championships..The.latest.post-season.victory.came.three.seasons.ago.when.the.women.captured.their.sixth.ECAC.Championship.against.UNH...The.22.championship.titles.include.New.England.(9),.ECAC.(6),.Greater.Boston.(5).and.the.National.Catholic.(2)..The.team.has.also.finished.as.high.as.second.in.the.BIG.EAST.Championship.(1985-86,.1986-87).and.once.placed.as.high.as.fifth.at.the.NCAA.Division.II.Championship...

The.men’s.squads.have.grabbed.three.second-place.team.finishes.at.the.New.England.Championships.(1988-89,.1989-90,.1990-91).and.a.pair.of.third-place.finishes.at.the.National.Catholic.Championships.(1992-93,.1993-94)..In.2001,.the.men.captured.the.Black.Bear.Invitational,.followed.by.the.placing.first.in.the.Northeastern.Invitational.in.2002...In.the.2006-2007.season,.the.men.earned.first.place.at.the.Orange.Bowl.Classic.

Boston.College.individual.swimmers.have.achieved.numerous.athletic.and.academic.accomplishments.under.Groden..Eight.former.swimmers.and.divers.have.been.enshrined.into.the.BC.Varsity.Club.Hall.of.Fame...Six.female.swimmers.have.qualified.for.the.NCAA.Division.I.Championships.and.five.different.swimmers.have.earned.Eagle.of.the.Year.honors...

Groden’s.teams.excelled.in.the.classroom,.as.the.programs.are.structured.to.allow.success.both.athletically.and.academically..Along.with.winning.records.and.improving.times,.the.Eagles’.swim.team.GPA.consistently.places.in.the.top.national.tier...The.men.and.women.both.placed.31st.nationally.during.the.2006-07.season....Groden.has.been.the.recipient.of.several.Coach.of.the.Year.awards.from.the.ECAC,.the.BIG.EAST,.the.NEWISDA.and.the.National.Catholic’s.organization...He.was.also.awarded.the.Masters.Coach.Award.from.the.CSCAA.

A.1972.graduate.of.Boston.College,.Groden.played.four.years.on.both.the.soccer.and.water.polo.teams..He.captured.Most.Valuable.Player.honors.in.water.polo.as.a.senior....

He.resides.with.his.wife.Sara,.a.BC.swimming.Varsity.Club.Hall.of.Fame.member,.in.Walpole,.Mass..They.have.two.daughters,.Susan.(22).and.Erin.(19)...Susan.graduated.from.BC.and.is.working.in.New.York,.N.Y.,.while.Erin.is.a.sophomore.at.Boston.College.

The Groden File

.BC.swimming.and.diving.head.coach.Tom.Groden.has.always.had.a.coaching.mind,.even.before.he.ever.considered.coaching.as.a.profession..Growing.up.in.Walpole,.Massachusetts,.Groden.recalled.a.story.that.explains.in.part,.why.he.has.enjoyed.every.one.of.the.37.seasons.that.he.has.coached.at.BC,.a.program.that.he.began.in.1972.

.“I.kept.a.folder.in.my.house.that.was.called.‘Running.’76,”.Groden.said..“It.was.my.goal.as.a.16-year.old.to.get.my.eight-year.old.brother.into.the.1976.Olympics..He.was.a.skinny.kid,.he.liked.to.run,.and.I.was.training.him.out.back.behind.our.house..He.never.did.get.to.the.Olympics,.but.that.summer.was.a.lot.of.fun.”

Groden.followed.his.calling.the.summer.after.his.graduation.from.Boston.College.in.1972,.when.he.was.named.the.Pool.Director.at.the.recently.opened.Flynn.Recreation.Complex.Pool.thanks.to.a.connection.with.legendary.BC.hockey.coach.John.“Snooks”.Kelley..As.the.summer.came.to.a.close,.BC.athletic.director.Bill.Flynn.summoned.Groden.into.his.office.for.a.meeting.

“He.said,.‘Are.you.going.to.be.here.in.the.fall,’.and.I.said,.‘Sure.’”.Groden.recalled..“For.19.years.that.was.as.close.as.I.got.to.a.contract.”.And.so.began.the.career.of.the.longest.tenured.coach.at.Boston.College,.a.career.that.has.been.marked.with.accomplishment.

In.the.past.decade,.Groden.has.passed.Kelley.and.for.most.wins.ever.by.a.head.coach.at.BC.and.has.become.the.first.coach.in.the.history.of.NCAA.swimming.and.diving.to.record.200.wins.in.both.a.men’s.and.women’s.team.at.the.same.school..

But.Groden.points.to.something.else.when.asked.about.the.achievements.during.his.tenure.

“I’m.most.proud.of.that.they.are.student-athletes,”.Groden.said..“I.advertise.the.program.that.way.and.it’s.always.been.that.way..To.me.it’s.never.been.about.winning.things..It’s.about.doing.things.right.and.enjoying.it.”.

She.has.been.coached.by.Olympic.coaches.Jeff.Huber,.Hobie.“Doc”.Billingsley,.and.Olympic.Diver.Sammy.Lee..She.has.coached.at.Towson.Diving.Clinic.and.at.Brandeis.University.with.Boston.Area.Diving..She.has.also.had.experience.teaching.private.diving.lessons,.rock.climbing,.water.skiing.and.wakeboarding.

Erica.attended.Towson.University.where.she.was.a.diver.in.the.CAA.for.her.freshmen.and.sophomore.years.under.Coach.Maureen.Mead..At.Towson,.she.majored.in.Mass.Communications.with.a.Concentration.in.Public.Relations.and.Integrated.Communication..In.2005,.she.spent.the.year.in.Ireland.attending.the.University.of.Limerick.for.Geography.and.Intercultural.Communication.Studies..

The.Boston.College.swimming.and.diving.program.continues.to.give.back.to.the.community,.living.by.the.Jesuit.ideal.of.men.and.women.for.others..

More.than.100.student-athletes,.including.members.of.the.swimming.and.diving.team,.correspond.regularly.with.area.school.children.through.the.Pen.Pal.program..In.May,.the.school.children.had.the.opportunity.to.visit.their.pen.pals.at.an.annual.picnic.in.Alumni.Stadium.

BC.student-athletes.also.visit.area.hospitals.and.schools.throughout.the.year.

Consistency...It.is.the.mark.of.true.excellence.in.any.endeavor..However,.in.today’s.intercollegiate.athletics,.competition.has.become.so.balanced.and.so.competitive.that.it.is.virtually.impossible.to.maintain.a.high.level.of.consistency.

.Yet.the.Atlantic.Coast.Conference.has.defied.the.odds...Now.in.its.56th.year.of.competition,.the.ACC.has.long.enjoyed.the.reputation.as.one.of.the.strongest.and.most.competitive.intercollegiate.conferences.in.the.nation...And.that.is.not.mere.conjecture,.the.numbers.support.it.

.Since.the.league’s.inception.in.1953,.ACC.schools.have.captured.109.national.championships,.including.57.in.women’s.competition.and.52.in.men’s..In.addition,.NCAA.individual.titles.have.gone.to.ACC.student-athletes.145.times.in.men’s.competition.and.92.times.in.women’s.action...The.success.of.ACC.swimming.and.diving.continues.to.reach.new.heights.since.the.league.sponsored.the.sport.for.men.in.1954.and.for.women.in.1979..The.2007-08.season.proved.to.be.another.storied.campaign,.as.the.league.produced.two.NCAA.individual.champions.and.had.15.student-athletes.named.NCAA.All-Americans.along.with.22.others.earning.All-American.Honorable.Mention..Miami’s.Rueben.Ross.won.the.three-meter.diving.event.at.the.NCAA,.giving.the.ACC.consecutive.diving.national.champions.for.the.first.time.in.league.history...Brittany.Viola,.also.of.Miami.captured.the.platform.diving.national.title.for.the.league’s.first.women’s.diving.championship.

ACC.men’s.swimming.and.diving.have.accounted.for.228.NCAA.All-Americans,.16.national.individual.champions.and.one.national.championship.relay.team.in.the.54.years.of.its.storied.program..Six.of.the.12.schools.have.claimed.an.ACC.championship.crown.with.three.of.the.schools.having.won.10.or.more.titles..NC.State.leads.all.member.schools.with.24.total.conference.championships.(21.outright),.while.North.Carolina.has.clinched.17.(13.outright).and.Virginia.captured.11.

North.Carolina’s.Phillip.Drake.and.NC.State’s.Bob.Mattson.became.the.first.ACC.pair.to.be.crowned.NCAA.champions.in.1955..Drake.won.the.200.butterfly,.while.Mattson.took.first.place.in.the.200.breaststroke..There.would.be.five.more.NCAA.individual.champions.from.NC.State.over.the.years,.including.two-time.NCAA.champion.Dick.Fadgen.(200.breaststroke.and.200.butterfly).in.1956.and.most.recently.Cullen.Jones,.the.2006.NCAA.champion.in.the.50.freestyle.

Women’s.swimming.and.diving.have.established.its.own.standard.of.success.over.the.past.29.years..Approximately.255.student-athletes.have.been.named.NCAA.

All-Americans.and.six.were.crowned.NCAA.individual.champions..North.Carolina.has.been.a.dominating.presence.in.the.ACC,.winning.16.outright.league.championships.(1981-86,.1991-96,.2000-02.and.2007)..

The.Tar.Heels.also.boast.one.of.the.best.all-time.swimmers.in.conference.history..Sue.Walsh.won.10.national.collegiate.individual.championships.and.never.lost.a.backstroke.race.in.her.three.years.of.NCAA.competition..Clemson’s.Mitzi.Kremer.was.also.a.swimming.sensation.for.the.ACC,.as.she.won.both.the.200.and.500.freestyle.events.at.the.NCAA.in.1987.and.1989..Virginia’s.Cara.Lane.was.also.an.NCAA.champion.in.two.different.events,.winning.the.1500.freestyle.in.2000.and.placing.first.place.the.following.year.in.the.1650.freestyle.
