The, Delayed Steamers. The town's topic yesterday was the

non-arriv- al of the steamers one fromthe Australian colonies and one fromthe Coa?t. The delay in the arrival ofthe City of Sydney might easily vaccounted for by the heavy southeasterlyweather prevailing for several days pat. This steamship usually comes up verylight from the Colonies, and if this isher condition on the present' trip, thehead wind and heavy sea would retardher progress greatly. She was to bringseven or eight short-hor- n bulls fromHawkes Cay, New Zealand, for Messrs.Von Tempsky, Maui, which shouldprove a valuable addition to the pureDevon strain already on these Islands. This is the last trip of the City of Syd-ney under the Pacific Mail contract, andmany of his friends are anxious to seeand take leave of Captain Dearborn, herfiopuhtr Commander.

Greater disappointment, however, pre-vailed when it became apparent that theAlameda would not come in on time, itindeed at all. Early yesterday itoccurred to many business men that itmight le possible to reply to corre-SHnden- ce

from the Coast by the City ofSydney; but later on that hope wasabandoned, when it became knownthrough Mr. Henry Waterhouso, andfrom the office of Messrs. W. G. IrwinCo. that it was probable the Alamedawould not sail from San Francisco untilthe 10th, cm account of extensive altera-tions in her cabin and other internalfittings. Mr. Waterhouse had been in-

formed of this by Mr. John D. Spreckelsas the Mariposa was about to sail. Noofficial information of the fact havingbeen given to the ugeuts here it was ofcourse impossible for them to make anyauthoritative statement, and it wouldhave leen manifestly improier to giveexpression to a mere surmise.

It may le mentioned that the "occa-sion was improved" by Messrs. J. M.Oat, Jr., & Co., whose bulletin boardon Merchant street was the center ofattraction during the afternoon. It setforth, in chalk writing, all the rumorsand opinions as to the cause of thesteamers' detention, not a little amuse-ment Ix'ing created by the absurd andcontradictory comments. If however, the value of regular steamercommunication with the Coast is to beestimated by the amount of popular dis-

appointment caused by the non-arriv- al

of the Alameda on schedule time, thenthis community is prepared to make anyconcession to Messrs. Spreckels and theOceanic Company to insure it. '

MAIL.

In our editorial column we present thefacts regarding the hitch in the Australianmail service according to new develop-ments. As a matter of detail it maybestated that the Australia is advertised toleave Sydney on the 1- -t December forHonolulu and San Francisco direct. TheUnion Company advertise the Mararoaand the Alameda to leave Auckland on theSth December and 2d of January next re-

spectively, in place of the Zealandia andAustralia. The New Zealand Post OfficeDepartment has alo issued an officialstatement of the facts in the case, whichconcludes as follows:

' Negotiations ensued between Mr.Pearce and the Union Company, and atone time it seemed that a conclusion hadbeen arrived at. It seems, however, thatthe negotiations fell through, and now theUnion Company and the Oceanic Companyare left to perform the contract, while Mr.Pearce is announced to contemplate an op-

position service from Sydney, provided hecan le assured of a subsidy from the Gov-

ernment of New South Wales."We do not know on what basis he

grounds bis hopes of getting the subsidy. The Government of New South Wales haveconcurred in the arrangements the NewZealand Government have made, and haveprovisionally executed the contract, whichbinds thrni to its terms until Parliamenthas had the opportunity of ratifying .or re-

jecting it. The Postmaster General of theUnited States, too, has become a party tothe contract by promising to this service asubsidy.

" The liability of the Government of New-Zealan-

is well within the amount author-ized by the House, with the deductionto which it will be entitled, and theliability of New South Wales is very small. In short, New South Wales and NewZealand will get very 'efficient sendee at acost quite trifling compared with whatthe- - have hitherto paid. It appears, there-fore, that there is no reason to fear thatthe decision of the Government ofNew South Wales will be upset by Par-liament, and it i.s quite certain Mr.Pearce cannot offer a better service. Hewill it is supposed, be running on his ownaccount, and not on that of the PacificCompany, so that it will be without thosemeans of affording facilities for the use ofthe railways for mail purposes that" apowerful United States Company are ableto give. In fact, our service will be therecognized United States Service, as wellas that of the colonies of New Zealand andAustralia."

Foreign Xes.Dates to November 9th inclusive.

ing a, iranMiipmeiii at jionoiuiu; ismost .'injurious to the mercantile andgeneral public in this colony." At thismeeting a direct service, was stronglyadvocated, and Captain Chest, ex-coi- n-

mauder of the Australia, spoke stronglyin favor of it. He advocated calling atFiji and dropping out Auckland, andthought unless a mail service were in-

tended that slow steamers would suffice.A further resolution was passed: ''Thatsuch interests demand that a direct anduninterrupted service from .Sydney toSan Franci-c- should be arranged for."A deputation to present these resolutionsto the Postmaster General wasappointed, and the meeting adjourned.

Consequent on this popular action inSydney, .Mr. Pearce advertised the Aus-

tralia and Zealandia fo run direct le-twe- en

Sydney and San Francisco, call-ing at . Honolulu. When this flagrantbreach 'of Faith" transpired, the UnionCompany 'bf New Zealand telegraphed tothe Oceanic Company .to arrange for asteamer to carry tlic-ma-il from San Fran-cisco, and the Alameda was assigned totake the place of the Zealandia, whichwill probably arrive hereon Thursday enroute for Sydney as an oposition ship. The Union Company's new ship, theMararora, of 5,(XK) ton register, and oneof the finest vessels afloat, will take upthe service at Sydney on Ieeemler .'5d.

The Mararora left Glasgow on the 5th Oc-

tober, and will doubtless be on hand ingood time. If not, the Union Company'sship Mariixrtiri w ill bring the mail.

This is the situation at present, andwe offer no comments upm it. Sufficeit to say that the New South Wales Gov-

ernment is lound to the contract. Every-thing however dejMMids upm the actionof the New South Wales Parliament, which of course may repudiate the con-

tract, but we doubt this very much inview of ' the Federal compact betweenthe Colonies.:We look for the Alameda on Saturdav

next, because it. is past u Derail venturethat she. will be ordered to make thethrough, parage in quick' j time ; andshould the Zealandia have sailed threedays ahead of her, we shall be greatlysurprised If the Alameda does not steaminto Sydney harlor first, although call-

ing at Auckland. Otlicial advices fromNew Zealand are to the effect .that thatcolony and the Union Company of NewZealand are in earnest in this matter, and tha" with the assistance of theOceanic Company as joint contractors, the service, as already announced, willbe carried through, although the trans-shipment and detention at Honolulu isvery unpopular at 'Sydney.

THE AUSTRALIAN MAIL SERVICE.

, - By the City of Sydney we have nev,Hwhich explains., the ... "lutentiou of . theAlamela. If not, si ie willprobably Ipave on Sunday brit in ejtbrevent may 13 exjected here on Satur-day.

Mr. Pearce, who is in fact the ship-building firm of Jolin Elder &. Co., Jlas-go-

after having giyfcti his adhesionto the new contract for the conveyance ofthe Australian mail, and undertaken torun the Australia anL "Zealandia on the-mai- n

line to Honolulu, repudiated hisagreement and i? detei-mine- l to run anopposition service, leaving out New Zea-land, but calling at Fiji and Honolulu. In consequence of tliis breach of faith thecontractors were compelled to make fresharrangements, which they were not slowiu doing, and "which will tend verygreatly to the success of the new line, because the Australia aud Zealandiawere out of date in their equipments andspeed, and wholly unsuited for a. first-clas- s

passenger service.Mr. Pearce, through his business

agents and "connections iu Sydney, worked up a popular feeling againstthe new , service, in which he was not aprincipal, and resolutions condemnatoryof it Were ' passed' at a meeting of theSydney Chainlter of Commerce, as wellas at a meeting of the merchants andshipowners, At tihej meeting of J theChamber, after an. interview with thePostmaster General, t was resol ved :

1. It .having been reported that theGovernment of New South "Wales hasentered into an agreement with the Gov-

ernment of New Zealand to pay a certainsum annually toward the cost of a Pacificmail service from Sydney via Auckland toHonolulu by the Union Steamship Com-

pany of New Zeflahd, to 3e; continuedthence to San Francisco by an Americancompany, this Chamber expresses itsstrong, disapproval of such a .service., in-

volving as it does the transhipment ofmails and the consequent risk of delay. .

2. That the Chamber further disapprovesof any subsidy being'paid towards a maifservice, for which tenders have not beencalled, in the most public manner.

2. That, while it may be fairly arguedthat the time has arrived for the abolitionof all steam postal subsidies, it would hegood policy on the part of the Government,if no satisfactory arrangement can b? madewith New Zealand, to pay a liberal subsidyfor an independent service direct from

'Sydney to San Francisco. -

A deputation of the Sydney Cham-ber of Commerce waited on .Mr.See, the Postmaster General of NewSouth Wales, who made the followingremarks, as' reported' hy the ;Sydriey" Morning Herald :"

Mr.t ;See said 'they. were no: doubt Still

aware that the negotiations for the pro-

posed contract were carried out by Mr.Norton before his accession to office. only remained .for burn , say that Jie wasbound to carry out the intentions of thelate Postmaster General, though the Par-liament might refuse to ratify what thelate Government had done. They were inthis position, that-.unles- they agreed tothis they would have no serviceat all. Hereminded them that Sydney was to be theterminus of the service; and with regardto the passenger" accommodation, one-four- th

would always be reserved absolute-ly in the Oceanic Company, and they hadagreed to reserve more if necessary. Thesteamers they proposed to perform, theservice with between Sydney and Honoluluwere the Zealandia and Australia. Then itwas proposed on. the line from Honolulu jU

8au Francisco to 'have steamers of 3,000

tons, with expansion gear; and they weresupposed to travel sixteen knots an hour.Every facility would be afforded at Hono-

lulu for the transhipment of mails andpassengers, ami thirty-si- x hours would be

allowed there.'" "He desired alao to" rk'intout that New Zealand was always a greatattraction for travelers; and to have adirect service, not touching at NewZealand, would take a greatjnany passen-gers from us; and further, it a ques-
