Student and Instructor ExpectationsStudent and Instructor Expectations• Greetings, students! This is a course in reading and writing about imaginative literature, with an

emphasis on fiction, poetry, and drama. We will read, write, work hard, have interesting discussions, and have fun!

• What should you expect of this course and your instructor? -- This course is designed to improve your college-level reading and writing skills, while introducing you to some of the greatest examples of imaginative literature (fiction, poetry and drama) the world has to offer. Read the syllabus carefully, and please do not be shy if you have questions about it.

• What do I expect of you, my student? -- You will be expected to complete all course assignments by the announced due dates. If you have a serious emergency that prevents you from completing an assignment on-time, you must contact me prior to the assignment due date. I may decide to grant an extension in such cases. All other late assignments will be graded according to Colorado Technical University's late work policy.

• Late Assignment Policy -- Specific deadlines for all assignments are indicated in our course syllabus. The university's Professional Learning Model (PLM) focuses on skill development and concept formation through collaborative learning. In accordance with this model, students are expected to meet all due dates. Please make arrangements with me in advance if you need to turn in a late assignment. I will penalize late assignments at my own discretion. If you do not make prior arrangements with me and fail to turn in an assignment on time, I will apply the following penalties…

Late Submissions of Assignments by Students

• 1-3 days beyond the due date: 10% penalty of total assignment points.• 4-5 days beyond the due date: 15% penalty of total assignment points.• 6-7 days beyond the due date: 20% penalty of total assignment points.• 8+ days beyond the due date: no points awarded for assignment unless faculty member

agrees to an adjusted due date.

Exceptions -- Our Discussion Board assignments are designed for maximum student participation and engagement. You must contribute to the Discussion Boards (DBs) in a timely manner, and I will not accept late postings unless you discuss the reason for the late posting with me ahead of time.

• Quality Assignments -- You should work toward a goal of level three or four (an "A" or a "B") on Colorado Technical University's grading rubric. To achieve this goal, all of your assignments must be formatted according to the APA (American Psychological Association) style guidelines. Properly-formatted level-four work includes in-text citations, peer-reviewed research to support your assertions, excellent grammar, and examples from your personal and professional experience. Your Discussion Board responses should include insightful ideas that help and encourage your classmates.

• Netiquette -- Please show respect for your classmates and instructor at all times, and on all Discussion Board comments and e-mails. Do not attach files to the Discussion Boards. Please paste your Discussion Board responses in the spaces provided.

• I will deal with all cases of cheating (including plagiarism) in accordance with CTU guidelines.

• Relax and have fun with this course. You will want to spend plenty of time in the imaginative worlds of fiction, poetry, and drama!

can be accessed via the Discussion Board link. You should write two to three paragraphs about yourself. I suggest you begin by

discussing your background and why you are in school. Also, feel free to mention your proudest accomplishments, and offer advice to

You may also upload a picture, by clicking “Post File” when you respond to the Discussion Board. JPEG images work well, but it will

accept other formats, too.
