The other day l attended the 60th birthday of Bola Shagaya and it was an event that will not be forgotten in a hurry. I have always said that an event is a reflection of

the celebrant’s character. If it is quiet and solemn, the host is like that in nature. If it is large and full of people from all works of life, it is also a reflection of the host. I already knew what to expect as l got ready for this event but still, nothing prepared me for the mammoth crowd and caliber of people that attended. What was most fascinating was that there were people of all ages, from young to old. And everybody, had some connection with the celebrant. She had told me it would be something small but l knew that would be a very tall order!

Now why am l telling you this story...simply because it is important to impact positively in people’s lives in your own journey of life. As you get older,

it is not just enough to be popular and be seen every where. What is important is the legacy you leave behind. The people who would do anything for you because of

the love you have shown them at one time or the other. The people who will stand by you whether you are driving a Rolls Royce of you are inside ‘Keke Na Pep’! Don’t get me wrong...l am

not so naive to not know that success has a lot of friends while failure is an orphan. I know that. But the truth is, failure can also turn into success because of the people you have assisted or helped in the past when they were down. It’s called goodwill. It might not be all, or even some of such people, but it might just be that one person you least expect that would become your anchor for that period. So when you have the opportunity to give or assist, try to do what you can so that when you have cause to celebrate something, those whom you have built relationships with over the years, can come and jubilate with you. But please note, it is not just the numbers that come that matters but the love and happiness shared with you on your special day. In this harsh climate we all live in today, it is nice when you can gather people around and give them cause to smile for one reason or the other especially if you are the cause.

We should learn to appreciate such little pleasures of life more and Thank Him for his mercies.

FLORENCE ITA-GIWA“Fashion fades, but style is eternal” says Yves Saint Laurent and rightly so. This is one quote that aptly describes the ageless Florence Ita-Giwa. Fondly referred to as Mama Bakassi, the 73 year old, still looks fabulous every time we spot her as she gives us another reason to admire her for aging gracefully and maintaining her signature style. TRADITIONALLY CORRECTWhat is a traditional outfit these days without the fitted buba (Traditional top) and Iro. This modern style Buba and Iro further attests to the fact that Ita-Giwa is a master of the game when it comes to adding a little twist here and there to give her outfit more pizzazz. Not only is her outfit bang on trend with the bubble sleeves, it fits her like a glove.

ALWAYS DRESSED WITH A SMILEYou are never fully dressed without a megawatt smile and this, Ita-Giwa has in abundance! She is still very young at heart which is why she has friends from all works of life, both young and old. She is always a joy to watch whenever she appears in public and with a dress as sparkly as hers, her beautiful smile finishes off this look perfectly!

SHE CAN PULL OFF THE WHITE LOOKA form fitting white outfit might be considered risky for ample women but not if you are Florence Ita-Giwa! She pulls off this angelic number with ease. She wears it in the most flattering way.

ELEGANCE AT HER FINGERTIPS This is one word that qualifies Ita-Giwa, Elegant. She exudes it wherever she goes and this dress personifies her flexibility with experimenting with textures and fabrics. The top of the dress is soft and alluring while the bottom part is structured. Combined together creates this winning look! An art she has mastered.

RELATABLE AND AGE APPROPRIATE No matter what Mama Bakassi adorns, whether trendy, formal or native, she always dresses age appropriate and sometimes dares to push the envelope...but within reason. This skill is what makes her appealing and attractive at all times.

It is not news anymore that you recently celebrated your 60th birthday amidst lots of fanfare and pageantry. How did you feel when you saw the caliber of people that turned up to jubilate with you?

I ‘d like to start by thanking the Almighty Allah SWT for His unquantifiable mercies upon my life. To say the least, I was overwhelmed with joy when I saw the galaxies of very great men and women, creme de la creme of the society, that took time out of their very busy schedule to felicitate with me. I am indeed grateful and I am not taking their show of love and affection towards me for granted at all. May God reward them abundantly.

It has been said that the people that turn up to your event is a reflection of the character of the host. Did you expect to see such magnitude of people from all walks of life?

You will be right if you say it’s a reflection of the character of the celebrant but do not forget that very many of my guests were either my mentors, teachers, fathers, mothers and friends, while others were my bosses, royal fathers, spiritual fathers and mothers not to mention political or business associates, my children and adopted children as well. It was also a gathering of family members to celebrate me. If you recall, a number of my children came in stage to deliver heart-touching eulogies for my birthday which moved me to tears.

You are a very successful business woman who has scaled far higher than even most men would in their life time. During your chart to success, you must have encountered challenges and adversities. What motto have you lived by that keeps you going?

Again, I must thank God for everything, I didn’t come into business to compete with the male folk but rather, I see men as partners in progress. I therefore came with the mind set of not to quitting due to the exigencies of the business climate.

I believe very much in the saying that “winners don’t quit and quitters don’t win”. With God on my side and my very wonderful team, the journey to building a conglomerate started. It wasn’t an easy task and still is

not, but God has been very kind to me. There are no businesses without challenges, what

matters most in business is perseverance, resilience, focus and determination. With the team of able supporters that I have, we have managed to grow the business to what you now refer to as a success and to achieve the much desired success, I do not toil with staff welfare. My staff are the most important component of my businesses.

You also showed a movie of your life story at your party. For those who did not get the opportunity to watch it or see it clearly, can you give us a brief summary of what your childhood was like and lessons you learnt while growing up?

The movie simply tells my life story. A story of “Grass to Grace”. From nothing to something and the rest is history.

You have five boys and singlehandedly brought them up to become the men they are today? What key lessons did you teach them as children and how tough was it for you?

I am blessed with five lovely boys that have grown to become men, all thanks to Allah SWT. The key lessons that I thought them and am still teaching, is for them to have the fear of God, love for mankind, respect discipline and content.

The reason why there is so much morale decadence in our societies today is due to the absence of the fear of God, the absence of love, respect, discipline and contentment. That was the way my parents brought me up, and I try to impact same life lessons on my children. It is said that “In school it is the lesson before the test, but in life, it’s the test before the lesson”. This approach has helped me also instill discipline in them.

Many successful people always feel the need to give back to the society in ways of philanthropy. Are you involved in any of such ventures?

I derive joy from giving because it’s not because I

I believe very much in the saying that “winners don’t quit and

quitters don’t win”. With God on my side and my very wonderful team, the journey to building a conglomerate started. It wasn’t an easy task and still is not, but God has been very kind to me.

Hajia Bola Shagaya is a businesswoman with a great love for the most beautiful clothes. As one of Africa’s richest women, Shagaya started her career with the audit department of the Central Bank of Nigeria before venturing into commercial activities in 1983. Her business experience started with the importation and distribution of photographic materials and she introduced the Konica brand of photographic materials into the Nigerian market and West Africa. She then left that sector and forayed into the Oil & Gas industry where she remains till date. As the

Managing Director of Practoil Limited, her company is one of the largest importers and distributors of base oil in Nigeria, serving local lubricant blending plants. Her other businesses also include huge investment in real estate, spanning across major cities in the country and she has over 300 employees under her belt. Shagaya is also on the board of Unity Bank PLC, and is a member of the recently inaugurated Nepad

Business Group – Nigeria. She is a patron of the Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria (FADAN), and an art enthusiast who supports and encourages the creative industry. Bola also loves sports, especially polo. In 2010, Bola was awarded he title of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) by the then President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. To whom much is given, much is expected. So when Bola Shagaya recently tuned 60, she pulled out all the

stops to have one of the biggest parties in Lagos. She was on hand to ensure everyone, both young and old, left with a long lasting memory of the event. What is most endearing about this woman who has it all, is her utmost humility. KONYE NWAGOBOR reports…

am the most intelligent or the smartest that I am blessed to this extent, but simply the will of God. So I owe it as a duty to God, to give back to society by taking care of the needy, the aged, widows and orphans and also give scholarships to indigent students. Nothing gives me more joy.

Some people also have a bucket list in terms of what they would still like to do regardless of what they have already achieved. Do you have boxes on your bucket list you are yet to tick and if so, what are they?

I intend to do so much more but will keep that very close to my chest for now.

Some people have also veered into politics and left the private sector at the zenith of their careers. Is politics something you might want to veer into in future?

I am a business woman, elective office is not for me, I don’t intend to go into that now or in the near future. I am not built for that.

What advise will you give to career women who are just starting a family and at the same time trying to build their portfolio. Many women struggle to balance both. How will you suggest a better balance?

Women are blessed. We are generally multitasking; therefore, we can perfectly combine both tasks together and still be successful. It is just a question of getting one’s priority right. That is the key that makes the difference.

With a busy life such as yours, how do you make time out to spend with your enlarging family?

It is a thing of joy that my boys turned into men and are also having their own children. I make out time to visit them and play with my grandchildren. They also reciprocate such visits to my house with their children and that gladdens my heart and I am grateful to almighty Allah SWT for his blessings.

What do you enjoy doing most when you have some free time to yourself?

I love reading especially the Holy Koran, exercising, and going in and out of spas all around the world.

You must have been extremely busy and totally exhausted from the preparations of your recent birthday. Are they any plans to take time off and go for a much-needed holiday?

Well, I travelled to Saudi Arabia before the birthday to thank God for my 60th birthday. Now that the party is over, I intend to travel for a much-needed rest soon.

Where do you most enjoying traveling to for some much-needed tranquility when the need arises?

Paris, London and Spain. I don’t enjoy travelling long haul.

What moment was most special to you amidst all the celebrations?

The very morning of my birthday at my residence in Abuja, Muslim clerics from all walks of life gathered and offered prayers to Almighty Allah SWT for my continued good health and long life at the instance of my family, friends and well-wishers. This is most special to me. Also when my children and adopted children

came on stage to eulogize me, like l said before, I was moved to tears.

One trait that is most endearing about you is your humility regardless of your status. Who instilled this trait in you?

God, my parents, my teachers, both spiritual and moral builders and most of all, life!

You have also been close to people in the corridors of power. Who will you say most impacted on you as a person whilst they were in power?

Everyone that I had cause to relate with at the corridors of power were exceptional, and I thank God for that. All of them from Gen Babangida, to Gen Akilu, to Chief Obasanjo, to Gen Abdulsalami, to Dr. Turai Yar’adua, to President Goodluck Jonathan, to Prof Yemi Osinbajo as well as Dr. Mrs. Aisha Buhari and many others who sent to me personal birthday letters. They were all wonderful and we have become one big family as you saw from their presence at my birthday celebrations.

You are also aware that success attracts people from all walks of life. How have you been able to maintain a discerning spirit to avoid pitfalls?

Yes, I am aware that success has a lot of friends while failure is an orphan. I am not perfect, but at all times, I always ask for Allah’s protection and guidance.

Are they any world renowned figures you admire and see as iconic? If so who are they and how have

they impacted on your life’s journey so far?In life, we all grow up to admire certain people for

either their success in their various fields of human endeavour or for one reason or the other.

It also seems like there is no age barrier with your friendships. Has it always been like this even from your younger days?

There should be no barrier to friendship. I give everyone the respect he or she deserves both young and old and I love them all.

Lastly, what will you like to say to everyone who played a role in making your 60th birthday the huge success that it was?

To everyone who played one role or the other, in making 60th Birthday such a huge success, I say to one and all, that I am proud to have you as family friends, teachers, mentors, fathers, mothers, children, loved ones, associates and well-wishers. May God Almighty bless you all with continued long life, good health and may all your heart desires come to fruition. If I come back to this world again In Sha Allah, you will still be part of me. I love you all.

Yes, I am aware that success has a lot of friends while failure is an orphan. I am not perfect,

but at all times, I always ask for Allah’s protection and guidance.

Come with me people on ‘the road less traveled’, let us pause to ponder...

As people of faith we have many promises dressed up to meet the challenges of life. We make up ourselves

to the “tee “ and we walk down the street strutting our stuff with spiritual gorgeousness and an unassailable debonair spirit, “ain’t nothing wrong with that” cos on a good day when we have eaten the balanced diet of logos in rhema , with faith at the crux, our immunity against the negative bombardment of life is 100% , we believe we can take the world, until life throws us a curveball that nobody prepared us for, not our leaders of faith who don’t really understand it themselves, not our parents who are still wresting with their challenges, not our peer group who on a good day are more confused than us.

Nobody told us that sometimes we can have a boulder of faith and our mountains refuse to move, jeering at our efforts with a “catch me if you can” glint in its eyes.

Nobody told us it will be this difficult to breathe, but the good book did, in Hebrews 11, our famous hall of faith....

The question that then comes to mind is this: what then is the point of it all.... my ready answer will be that I don’t know, I have traveled this road and I have been waylaid at every turn, I have lost loved ones to senseless deaths and I have been slapped repeatedly by life, I carry my scars with pride knowing that it predisposes me to empathy, and positions me to one day give my shoulder to pilgrims in distress, not because I can soak away the pain but because I can tell them that I have been there, done that, and I survived purely by grace alone.

Let me be crystal, despite all one goes through, does it make sense to give up hope and give up on life, my resounding answer is “No” as many have walked this route and won and despite our bruises and wounds, it will be pathetic not to try.

Do we then give up on the Creator and his beautiful promises, junk our faith and leave all to a free fall? I beg my brother, my sister, no matter what you do, don’t lose what makes you get up every day and try, your hope in God. What do you have to lose anyway...

Many question the existence of God as presented by religion, I have questioned it too, but wait a minute, God is not religious and he has never lied to us that this world was going to be easy, but he did say that if we stay the course, dig in our heels, no matter the outcome of any test, we will be conquerors.

I will hereby plead that we make the best of our situations, work hard, seek direction as the one who seeks direction never gets lost, build hope within, hold on to faith, starve your fears, as you set out to sea.... and no matter what life proffers having done all, stay your face on the Creator so that you can walk on water.

Run your race with courage, and note that courage is not the absence of fear but the ability to confront your fears despite the odds.

It’s a hard road, no doubt, but travel it you must, last last, you will be alright.

Colours of Life

Today’s testimony is not one I ever gave serious thought to, but Barry did. One day himself, my husband and I were talking over tea, in our home, when I casually shared this experience and

Barry picked interest in it.Barry is an Englishman and a committed

Christian. At the time we had this conversation, he was in Nigeria on a contract with an oil and gas company. In this community in the Niger Delta, where he lived and worked, the expatriates were having a field day with the local girls. Now, Barry had a burden for evangelism. His mission field easily became the commercial sex workers he often encountered at the estate club or just by virtue of keeping company with the other guys. Barry was also single and, naturally, in search of a wife. He told the young women about the wonderful love of Jesus, the Son of God, who had changed his life. We wondered how we could help Barry in this work. He mentioned that in trying to reach out to these women, he got to hear a common reason for their lifestyle; many of them said they were driven by the need to survive.

Now here is the testimony. It would have occurred sometime in the late 1980s or early 1990s. At the time I was a church worker at the Apapa parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God. That workforce was the most energetic and passionate I have come across. Workers’ meetings were intense and deep experiences in worship, study of God’s word and prayer. We were bustling with this amazing energy, full of faith and zeal. We recorded many adventures; it was not uncommon for us to empty our bank accounts, sell our only cars or give all the money in our pockets as offering to fund God’s work– and all this with joy! Our youthful passion was dissipated in service to God and humanity. Another thing we did was fast often.

At the time, I shared a flat with my childhood friend, Ebi. One day I discovered my supply of food had run out. Pay day must have been round the corner, but I needed to eat to stay

alive till pay day. I wondered what to do – should I ask Ebi for food? Should I get food from my sister’s house? Should I get in touch with my parents to bail me out? Or, should I take my need to one of the many young men who were chasing me? – and some of them were quite well to do. I decided there was yet one option I could explore: fast for the 3 days before pay day. I opted for the last alternative and this is the simple story that got Barry excited!

He pointed out to me that if, in trying to support him, I shared the gospel with the young women, they could write me off as privileged and therefore unable to empathize with their

struggle. But he felt that with the experience I had just narrated, I could connect with them.

Since God used Barry to open my eyes, I have shared this story over and over again, to encourage young women that lack (of even a necessity such as food) is no reason to sell out.

So, if we find ourselves pressured to give ‘sex for marks’, or for promotion, or to do anything that would put us at variance with God’s word, we don’t need to give in. Even where we have options, we can intentionally choose the not so easy path that profits us spiritually and builds our character.

I believe that decision I took over 25 years ago left me better than before - for one, I learnt that going 3 days without food does not kill. I also enjoyed the many benefits of detoxing, and while at it I shed some weight.

The same resolve that helps us to say no to the easy way out would serve us well when we are faced with the temptation to displease God to satisfy a temporary need. Today it may just be food we need to give up, tomorrow it could be a luxury car, a juicy contract or a dream job.

David was able to defeat Goliath because he had previously triumphed in smaller battles:

‘But David said to Saul “… Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”

ONCE I HAD NO FOOD

with Koko Kalango

I will hereby plead that we make the best of our situations, work hard, seek direction as the one who seeks direction never gets

lost, build hope within, hold on to faith, starve

WHY CELE-BRATE YOUR BEST?

The cabin was stirring with the early morning sounds as passengers began to awake prior to the descent of the long distance flight from Singapore. I picked up the Newspaper I had been reading before drifting up to sleep and flicked through the pages whiling away the few minutes before touchdown when the picture of a very jubilant black family caught my attention. The headline wasn’t the usual doom and gloom associated with News but one of celebrating outstanding A’level results in the UAE.

As I read the opening lines of the article, I wasn’t surprised that the name of the overall top student in the UAE, with 4 A*s and a math score in the top 50 globally, was distinctly Nigerian. Time and time again, I have found Nigerians to be in the top echelon of every school they attend in every geography of the world that Nigerians, in their quest for quality education not found at home, have sought out in the far corners of the world. Sadly though, neither was I surprised that the words Nigerian nor Nigeria were not as much as whispered in the article that hailed the excellence of the UAE education system and the brilliance of its students but rather this bright 18year old is a ‘British National’.

The Almighty Creator understanding the power of words brought all the animals He had created to Adam to name. We are told that whatsoever Adam named them was what they were called. There is power in what anything is called and so it is that when anything negative occurs, usually crime related, the headlines will carry British National of Nigerian descent or Nigerian born British citizen but never when the cause is for celebration, winning a sports world title or topping the world of academia. Indeed it is only those nations that understand the power of the spoken word who use it to perfectly to boost their global profile while those who don’t care carry the toga of negativity upon whom other nations dump all their unwanted character profiles.

May Nigeria start owning all her best today.

GREEN AND YELLOWGreen and yellow looks great on most complexions. If you’re warm toned, focus on mustard, khaki and dark green. If you’re cool toned, sharpen up an outfit by adding bright yellows and iridescent greens.

PERFUME FOR THE

WHO HAVE EVERYTHING!Great perfumes have always been a signifier of affluence and influence. In 17th-century France, where Louis XIV’s court was known as “la cour parfumée”, the king demanded a different fragrance for every single day. Cleopatra, the Egyptian and the most alluring and seductive Queen of the times had her sails smoothened with aromatic oils before setting out to sea, in order to attract the attention of Mark Antony wherein the latter would catch the scent of her arrival before laying eyes on her face. The Man and woman who has everything wants fragrances that are unique, sublime, and exclusive; rare creation that stands them out in a crowd and olfactory notes that ooze sophistication and style.
