Manufacturing Technology Opportunities (ManTech)

ManTech projects are funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and administered

by 6 Centers of Excellence (COEs) that work with Electric Boat (EB) to identify and ma-

ture new technology for the manufacturing and outfitting of both VIRGINIA Class and

COLUMBIA Class Submarines. ManTech looks for technologies that require additional

development before implementation in a shipyard. These technologies may undergo a

series of modifications, improvements and maturity to adapt to shipbuilding needs. After

the technology has been matured, it can then be implemented resulting in a cost and sched-

ule impact for the applicable platforms. Each year ManTech COEs solicit the shipyards

involved in producing Navy ships for ideas for funding consideration. Those candidate

projects are presented to the ManTech COEs and are then down selected by ONR to those

worthy of being pursued.

EB is currently working with the COEs to develop Project Planning Documents (PDD) for

each idea. As the PPD’s are completed, they will be submittal to ONR for approval to

proceed with the task development.

The new PPDs currently being devel-

oped for QP are:

Robotic Processing for Installing Hull

Inserts

Computer Numerical Control Forming of

Plate Parts

Automated Welding of Hull Frames

Portable Robotic Welding Systems

High Speed Rotating Welding Arc Pro-

cess (partnering with BIW Shipyard)

The tasks currently funded and being led by QP are:

Weld Sequence Planning for Major Assemblies

Automated Hanger Manufacturing

Mobile Computing Design-Build Process

One Task is awaiting award:

Sheet Metal Shop Modernization

Within the coming weeks, the ManTech program office will be soliciting the EB Commu-

nity for new ideas worthy of submitting to ManTech for FY 2019 funding consideration.

The tasks typically are accomplished within 2 years of the funding award date.

U.S. Navy Award for

Continued Colum-

Development

The Navy has awarded Electric

Boat a $95.5 million contract

modification to continue develop-

ment of the Common Missile

Compartment for the U.S. Navy’s

Columbia-class submarine and the

Royal Navy’s Dreadnought-class

ballistic-missile submarine.

The contract modification will

enable procurement of 17 missile

tubes which will support the man-

ufacture of the Common Missile

Compartment.

Initially awarded in December

2012, the five-year, $1.85 billion

contract calls for Electric Boat to

perform research and develop-

ment work for the Navy’s next-

generation ballistic-missile sub-

marine, which is scheduled to

begin construction in 2021. The

potential value of the overall con-

tract is $2.5 billion
