The Orishas Who Speak in OkanaIn this sign, the following orishas are known to speak: Eleggua, Ogun,Babaluaiye, Orisha Oko, Obatala, Aganyti, Shang6, as well as one'segun.

Special Notes on OkanaAlthough marked by one mouth on the mat, Okana is not the first

odu to manifest in nature (the first is Eji Ogbe, the eldest of theelders); this sign was born from Ofun, ten mouths. The sign Okana isharsh, heated, being an expression of peace wrought by the destructionof discord (hence its volatile nature). doubled or twinned. It will affect everything that comes in pairs, and in the body it may have severe applications or warnings dependingon the odu pulled at the door to modify the sign (see the nextparagraph). If this odu opens during an ita-or a reading given whena client makes ocha and becomes an initiate-the italero will immediatelymake the sacred gestures associated with this pattern: Bothearlobes are pulled simultaneously while he turns his gaze to meetthe eyes of everyone in the room. This calls their attention to thefact that Okana has opened on the mat. Next, the fingers of bothhands are snapped immediately before the client's face: His attentionmust be caught, and he must notice that Okana has opened forhim. This sign is volatile and will bring many changes to his lifebeginning at this moment. Once all of this has been done, manyitaleros will chant a prayer in Lucumi for placation and appeasementof this sign.Having done this, the italero drops the sixteen shells into a jicara offresh, cool water to purify and calm the odu. An assistant is named totake the jicara, water, and shells to the diviner's front door. The dooris opened wide and the santero performing this short ritual faces thestreet, silently greeting 016dumare, Olorun, and Ol6fin, praying forpeace and blessings. With the gourd in the left hand and the right coveringthe jicara's open mouth so no shells may fly out, the water isflung far into the street. All these actions are done solemnly to removeOkana from the house. Remember that only the assistant may leave

the room to go to the front door. The client, diviner, and santeros presentmust wait quietly beside the mat.Now the assistant returns with the jicara and shells, covering thegourd with one hand so no one may look inside. On the floor beforethe diviner, this gourd is turned upside down gently; the shells areallowed to fall in a new pattern. Using the left foot, the officiatingpriestjess steps lightly on the overturned container. Some will tap itthree times with the foot before removing it. If a young child or a virginis present in the home, that person is summoned to lift the gourd, for it is said that only innocence like a child's may pacify Okana.Lacking either of these, the job once again falls to the diviner's assistant.Once the odu on the floor is recorded, the shells are lifted backto the mat and the reading continues. Even though the shells are

thrown to the mat once more to find the second half of Okana, theodu read from the floor, said to "have come in at the door," is used tofurther define the letter's double pattern.Upon closing the reading, there is also an eb6 that this odu demandsfrom the diviner, client, and all those present in the diviner'shome (not just those sitting at the mat). A fresh piece of steak orunground meat should be rubbed thoroughly with ep6 (red palmoil).' Show this meat to Eleggua, asking him to remove the letter'snegative vibrations from those in the house. One by one, present themeat to each person, following this pattern: head, back of neck, shoulders, heart, stomach, arms, knees, feet, and hands (naming eachpart in Lucumi), and then pass it over the entire body so the offeringcan absorb the osogbo. After everyone has been cleansed, the meat

should be left to Eleggua for at least twelve hours (overnight) beforethrowing it to the street corner the next morning. While this short ritual will remove Okana's volatility from thosepresent in the home, the diviner will remain heated until he can finallysit for a reading with the oracle. Using Elegguas diloggun, the divinershould open an odu for himself and consult with the orisha to seeif any osogbo from Okana remains with him or his home (and thosewho live with him-his family). IfEleggua prescribes any eboses at thispoint, these should be done immediately before the diviner reads foranother client or resumes his normal daily activities. Only then is the

sign properly appeased and the work of Okana complete.

The Message of OkanaThose for whom one mouth has fallen on the mat are delivered awarning: Life is entering a volatile energy pattern. The diviner beginsthe reading by pulling on his ears and snapping his fingers to focusattention on what is being done and said. Following this is a brief ritualperformed to ceremonially cool Okana, for this letter brings muchspiritual heat into the home. Again, the shells are allowed to modifythe opening throw with another letter to explain why the reading hasopened thus before giving the final leg that opens its composite.Okana gets a lot of ritual attention as it tells us the client is not honestwith himself (the truth hurts, and others frequently assess his lifeand actions honestly). The more solemnly its arrival is treated, themore likely the diviner will be able to get his message across. Eventhose who are closest to the client find that their honest advice isignored. Indeed, the argumentative tone taken by the client makesothers slow to give good counsel. Okana brings little ire, but if the odumarks itself thus, it shows that there will be a way to make present difficultieswork out; but this is true only if the letter's advice is followed. This person has a good rapport with children, yet he is too juvenile inhis ways to have the same rapport with adults. From Okana, we know the client is involved in shady dealings.

Sometimes these are only minor moral transgressions, but sometimesthe composite odu will warn of major doings. All such actions mustbe stopped, for others will discover the shadiness. Random violenceand planned attacks are also a danger now, both by and against thisperson. If you are the client, be cautious, and work diligently to ensurepersonal safety. Guarding one's safety, however, does not extend to thecarrying of weapons, for these things will only make an attack worse. If the odu that came at the door was three mouths, Ogunda, someonemay have an unforeseen accident with a weapon. Do not buy a largeknife or a gun for the home, and if these things are already owned, they should be safely locked away. If the composite odu itself is OkanaOgunda (1-3), not only can the accident be in the home, but alsosomeone, a visitor, may bring it from outside the home. A key to

avoiding major tragedy is to keep in mind that children always figurestrongly in this letter. Also, keep in mind that any heavy tool canbecome a deadly weapon, the most dangerous and easily availablebeing the hands. Any attack, violence, or altercation could easily bringtrouble with the law, so be careful.Illegal activities may find a way to creep into the client's life evenif caution is taken. Purchases of used goods should be avoided, but ifthe client is determined to buy something from another person, heshould investigate the item's origin. It may be stolen. If someone asksto store anything in the home, this request should be refused for thesame reason. Anything bought, held, or found could be illegallyobtained property. Honesty is the best policy for the next month orso. If the truth cannot be told, then nothing should be said. If one

cannot be honorable, nothing should be done. Occult acnvmesshould be kept to a minimum. There should be no cursing figurativelyor literally. These things will only intensify the erratic energyof this odu. Both minor arguments and major debates are to beavoided, as well as any rally, cause, or confrontation in which theclient has much emotional involvement. Any type of disagreementsnow will only serve to block the paths remaining open. Belief in theorishas is already a front, meaningless lip service, and even if theclient professes faith, it is in the head and not the heart. Negativityand stubbornness have closed the gates to the divine.

Both children and animals figure prominently in this odu; onewho has both in the home must be cautious. Teenagers will rebelagainst their parents; sometimes, these rebellions can bring violence.Animals will revolt against their owners; and these revolutions canbring attacks. Small children should not be left alone with domesticpets, especially dogs, for the innocent can injure. Sickness can plagueboth, and odu demands proper medical treatment. Opening Okanaforebodes disease, and those who are young can become ill. Illness, however, does not include just the body. The mind can suffer silently, diseased by stress and turmoil. Any child with whom one is relatedcan feel the effects of this sign. Erratic behavior, moodiness, orunusual activities demand support and love, not punishment. Onlyin this way will osogbo be turned to ire.The client must be continually concerned about his home until thisodu has passed. It must not be left for extended periods. Travel forbusiness will not be profitable, nor will personal vacations be enjoyable. If travel is unavoidable, an eb6 to protect the traveler and hishome should be marked before the oracle is closed. Realize, however, that to go away is to invite bad news as a companion. One specificdanger is that of fire: Okana has revealed that the home is heated, volatile, and spiritual qualities may become physical expressions. Keepsources of open flame extinguished or under supervision. Unplugappliances that are not being used, and limit the burning of candlesand incense. Loose clothing should not be worn when cooking, nor

should children ever be allowed in the kitchen. The next twenty-eight days will not be a good time for parties orsocial gatherings: The client must now find solitude. He should seeksomewhere safe and quiet where he may organize himself, his life, hisfeelings. This persons thinks that his life is going well, that there is noneed for peace and seclusion. This is a person who resists rest and solitude, preferring to talk out troubles with others, and right now no onecares about the client's problems; no one wants to help. Only theorishas care. Those trusted friends who have come for help in the pastwould be the ones who turn their backs now. Clear communication isneeded from those with whom the client spends time, and those whowill not be open and honest must be avoided. The reason for openness, honesty, peace, and solitude is simple: Like attracts like. Bitterness and

intrigue will block out the good things life has to offer. Negativity andimpatience ensure continual failure. No matter the double odu thathas opened, the diviner should prescribe a rogaci6n, or cleansing ofthe head, giving it before the client is allowed to leave the house. Thiswill help him face his difficulties with a calm, clear head.Because this letter is so strong, certain orientations of osogbo demandspecial attention. Whenever any type of osogbo is predicted inthis sign, the odu is extremely hot and volatile; the client must conducthimself honorably and legally at all times if he is to avoid altercationswith the law. There should be no violence, no simulated violence, nor should there be any harsh, physical activity or practicaljokes. In this letter, danger lurks in darkness, so have a light in thebedroom when asleep at night, and do not go out after dark until the

energies of this odu have passed. Those who work third-shift jobsdealing with the public are under scrutiny by vagrants and robbers;and for the next nine days the worker should be overly vigilant andcautious. There is a strong prohibition that the diviner must prescribein any osogbo: If the client hears signs of violence, he must not checkit out with his eyes. He should secure himself so that the violence cannottouch him, and then call the authorities. Say only that he heard astrange disturbance, and if they ask him to do a visual check, heshould refuse. Do not admit to witnessing anything, for then the dangerof this letter might carry over into the courtroom. If the client is

sought out as a witness to any crime or accident, he should not admitto seeing anything. In either the ano or iku osogbo, the letter foretells illness, disease, anddeath brought about through accidents or violence, and the client mustguard his safety at all times lest he become a victim of another's evil. Donot go out at night; do not go out alone during the day. Locks to cars, homes, and offices are useless unless they are actually locked: Check anddouble-check all security systems in the home, office, and car. When drivingabout during the day (do not drive at night-ever) make sure thatseat belts are worn. Do not drive at an excessive speed, and do notbecome angry or display anger toward other drivers. The roads are hotin this letter. When araye opens as the osogbo, the client is overly stubbornand hardheaded; this will be his disgrace and his downfall. Nomatter how sternly the diviner delivers this reading, the client will notheed the advice. The diviner should tell the client this. Then he shoulddeliver the full list of prohibitions and meanings for Okana, telling theclient that he ignores these things at his own peril. That way, when thedangers in this sign are finally manifest in the client's life, the divinercan still be assured that he did all humanly possible to keep this personfrom harm. The client's downfall is his own doing.

The Prohibitions of OkanaIf the client's reading comes in any type of osogbo, the diviner needsto prescribe the following prohibitions for a period of twenty-one to

twenty-eight days; unless this is the reading of ita, in which case theodu's prohibitions last for a lifetime. Obviously, not all these willapply in every case; the diviner must depend on his own ache and theshells themselves to determine the prohibitions that are appropriate.Perhaps the most important prohibition brought when Okana comesin osogbo is this: No one may leave the diviner's house until Okana iscleared by the special eb6 to Eleggua. This applies to the diviner, client, priest/esses, and anyone else who may be inside the diviner'shouse when Okana falls in osogbo. Many of the legal complications brought by this sign can beavoided if the client ensures that nothing is bought secondhand;if articles are bought anyplace outside of the market or astore, steps must be taken to ensure that the seller has received

them by legal means. Ask for warranties, receipts, and places oforigin for all objects purchased. Make sure that there is a witnessto the purchase, and make sure that the true identity ofthe seller is known in case anything turns out to be stolen. The mouth must be kept pure, especially when either the ireor osogbo of this sign is said to come through the client's owntongue or mouth. There must be no obscene or blasphemouswords spoken; do not tell tasteless jokes, and never gossip. Refrainfrom obscene gestures as well, and do not keep companywith those that do these things. Weapons may not be carried, used, or owned. If the client carriesanything not normally used for a weapon, yet conceives ofit as a weapon, this must be put away in a safe place.

Large gatherings, parties, and groups are to be avoided; if intoxicantsare served, leave immediately. If a social gathering is unavoidable(for the sake of business), it is of utmost importancethat the client not get there early, nor must he stay late; he shouldattend for the barest minimum amount of time required. Whileat this gathering, do not speak beyond normal, polite conversation, and avoid any forms of gossip or second-guessing. If foodand drink are served, do not consume these things. There couldbe poison (intentional or accidental) or witchcraft hidden therein. Remember this: There is no such thing as make-believe violence,

Page 6: 1.OKANA II II II I

and there are few funny practical jokes. Avoid roughhousingand compromising the feelings of others. Much violence and hardship in relationships can be avoided ifthe client does not become entangled in adulterous affairs. Ifthis person is married, he must be wary of his conduct aroundthe opposite sex. Do not make love to another person's spouse;do not flirt with anyone. Never mistreat animals.

The ~boses of OkanaWhen Okana falls on the mat, in each composite odu the client isautomatically marked for the reception of the elekes and the warriors;and the diviner must relay this information to him. If theseinitiations are not enough to close the letter, or if the initiations arealready had, the elekes of one or more of the orishas speaking in thissign may be needed. The diviner should ask, "Eb6 eleke?" and if theanswer is yes, he should then ask, "Eleke de [orisha's name]?" If theeleke of one or more orishas is not needed, or if the letter will stillnot close, the diviner must turn to the lists of eboses given in eachcomposite odu before returning to the eboses of the parent odu,Okana. The eboses most vital to each of the omo odu follow.

The Eboses ofOkana Ejioko (1-2)

In this sign, it is important that the client have the Ibeyi (thedivine children of Shang6 and Oshun and the patrons of twins);this does not need to be marked as an eb6. If, however, theclient has the Ibeyi and the odu refuses closure, the divinershould ask if the orishas need eb6. Follow the pattern for markingeb6 given in the section "Marking the Eboses, or Remediesfor Odu" in chapter 1 of this book. Begin with the question"Adimu?" and end with the question "Eyebale?" If no eb6 can bemarked, a party should be given to the two orishas; only thenwill they stand up and fight on the client's behalf When Okana Ejioko opens and refuses closure for a priest/ess,the orisha speaking in this sign could be marking a tambor asthe solution for all the client's troubles (a tambor is a sacred festivalof an orisha). The diviner should first ask if a tambor isrequired. Then he should ask if the orisha whose diloggun is beingconsulted wants the tambor. If that orisha marks a tamboryet refuses batd, the sacred drums, the diviner should try tomark the drum for one of the orishas given in the priest/ess'socha. If all these refuse the drum, begin asking about the otherorishas following the order given at the beginning of this chapter

under "The Orishas Who Speak in Okana." Additionally, the diviner should note that if the eb6 of thedrum appears during an ita for either Eleggua or the orishaof the head, that client is automatically marked to give a drumto all the orishas in time. Also, proper protocol must be followedin giving this eb6: The godparent's orisha (from whomthe client's head was born) must be given fundamental batafirst before this client may play the drums for any of his ownSpirits.

sure to finish. Do not leave anything incomplete. You are dealingwith people who are very outspoken. Do not confide your secretsto them. Do not contradict or argue even if you are right. If youare a male, do not flirt with married women. If you are a female,do not flirt with married men. Be careful of someone trying to usewitchcraft against you. Never advise anyone to have an abortion.Someone who visits your home wants to rob you. Use your headand think straight. Do not let anyone lure you into doingsomething of which you are not accustomed. Do not carry anyweapons. You are prone to back pains or a kidney disorder. Donot wear anything that is twisted or tangled. Do not drag anything.Do not have anything that crawls in the house. If you are planningto travel, do not do so until eight days after this reading, and youhave accomplished what the reader has advised. Think out yourplans with good, clear thoughts. There are many who envy youand wish to do you harm. Do not take the law into your ownhands. Health wise, you have to take care of your intestines. Iffemale, you have to avoid complications with your menstruation. When Okanran appears in this sign, and you are already initiatedinto Ocha, you then have to receive the ceremony of the knife[Pinardo]. This is necessary to strengthen your life and avoidpossible complications from an operation. In Okanran Ogunda, you have to be cleansed with raw meat [obi, opo, oti, ono, efun, ecueya, aguardo] which will destroy bad luck. Once again, do not

argue with the authorities. Try not to go fishing. The fish mightbe your gift someday when you are obligated to make an offering.Do not associate with people when you are the third party involved.Be careful of a puncture, it might cause a spasm. It is advisable togo to the doctor for a physical exam. Take care of your heart. Youwere born to be independent. Do not become a slave to anyone.

The Eboses ofOkana Ogunda (1-3) The elekes should be given to put the client under the protectionof Obatala, Yemaya, and Oshun. If the client cannot affordthe expenses of this initiation, then a rogaci6n should be givenand Obatala's necklace put on the client.

Whenever Okana Ogunda opens for a priest/ess and refuses closure,it may mark one of two eboses: the giving of four legs orthe reception of the knife. First, the diviner should ask the oracleif an orisha needs four legs; and then he should ask if theorisha speaking requires four legs. If so, the eb6 is marked. Iffour legs are needed for an orisha beyond the one speaking, thediviner tries to mark it for one of the orishas given in theclient's ocha. He must follow the proper order for these Spirits(usually Obatala, Yemaya, Oshun, Shang6, Oya, Eleggua, andOgun are the ones questioned). After questioning these orishas, the diviner questions the orishas remaining (in order) from thesection at the beginning of this chapter titled "The OrishasWho Speak in Okana." After the proper orisha is determined,

the diviner must determine if that orisha also wants an ita theday after four legs are given. If the oracle will not mark four legs and ita for any of theorishas, the diviner should next try to mark the reception of theknife. After this, return to the list of eboses given for the parentodu, Okana; these are discussed in "The Eboses of of ParentOdu" at the end of this chapter.

1-4 Okanran Irosun [Okana Irosun]: Torment within the bodyHemorrhage from the mouth, nose, or anusComplete what isstarted. This sign indicates treason. Your enemies want to see yourdownfall. Be cautious where you walk. If you play with fire youmight get burned. Think before you speak to avoid ending up ina conflict. Bad luck surrounds you, causing complications. Try toprevent accidents and animal bites. Avoid traveling for a while.Your violent temper has to be controlled; otherwise you will goto jail. Control the urge of hitting someone when you are upset.Do not store anyone elses belongings. Be kind and consideratewith your partner. When you receive money, pay your debts. Becareful not to fall into a trap. If the person being advised is alreadyinitiated into Ocha, do not do what is advised until you speak tothe elders first. This sign indicates treason, uneasiness, hypocrisy, envy, gossip, sickness, and sickness within the family. Do notconfide your secrets to anyone. This sign also indicates despair

and the possibility of prison. You will be double-crossed throughthe use of papers. Be alert when signing any papers. In this signthe client has a mark on the body, a birthmark or a scar. If you areinitiated into Santeria you are advised to go for consultation beforetraveling over the ocean. Others have to take the same precautionas well. Be aware of your neighbors. They tend to be nosey andquarrelsome. They want to know everything about you. Be carefulof fires and electricity. You are afraid of thunder and lightening.Health wise, take care of your mind, eyesight, stomach, andcancerous ulcers. Do not jump over any holes. You should dressdifferently from others. Never say that you are smart. There aremany people who envy you while only wishing the worst foryou. You act a bit desperate. Your economic situation is having a

lot one day and nothing the next day. There should not be anykind of holes where you live. All empty bottles should be covered.Never swear or damn. It is advisable that under this sign that youpaint your house in various colors. When Okanran and Irosuncome together, it is like a familiar saying, One face laughs, whilethe other one cries. You may appear to be happy, but in reality aresuffering immensely. The thought about not knowing what isreally at the bottom of the ocean also refers to the deep feelings ofthe human and how he is able to keep them locked within him.Through this sign the symbol of fire becomes maximized. If thesign comes with good luck [Ire], the fire then comes as a benefactorand defender. Shango, the Orisha of fire, will help you. If on theother hand, the sign comes with contradictions [Osobo], then the

fire will be the cause of great destruction. It is advisable that youreceive Olokun, Bellis, and that Elegua should have a crown. Ifyou have children, the oldest has to be looked after with muchcare and concern. This child might someday have to be initiatedinto Ocha.YORUBA LEGEND: There once was a village where Olofidecided to close all the entrances and exits. The people ran shortof food and water. The twins, Teamo and Cainde, planned toliberate the children. The twins decided to appear where theythought Olofi was living. They found him sleeping there. Teamo

Page 12: 1.OKANA II II II I

approached him while Cainde hid. Teamo went directly beforehim and called out Baba. Olofi awoke and said, Oh good! Giftsfor me to eat! But before I eat, I want you to sing and play for me.I want to have fun and to dance. Teamo played for Olofi for fourhours, and then he told him he was tired and thirsty. Olofi permittedhim to go and refresh himself, but ordered him to return quickly. As long as you play, sing, and dance, I will not eat. While Teamowas away resting, his twin Cainde went before Olofi to play andsing for four more hours. Olofi was entertained, while his resistancewas weakened. This was how the people could be liberated. Thevillagers were happy. They lived in peace and happiness. Nowthey became the ones to sing and dance.

The Eboses of Okana Iroso (1-4) The Ibeyi can be an integral part of this sign; if it refuses closureand the client does not have the orishas, the diviner should askthe oracle if their reception is necessary. If the client has theIbeyi, he should ask if they need eb6. If an eb6 is marked, followthe line of questioning given in chapter 1 under the section titled"Marking the Eboses, or Remedies for Odu." Begin with the question"Adimu?" and continue through the question "Eyebale?" Ifnone of these is marked, the eb6 is to give the Ibeyi a party. InIrosun, this eb6 should be completed quickly.

Olokun is important in this odu as well. If the client does nothave Olokun and the letter refuses closure, mark her receptionwith the shells. If the client has Olokun, he should ask if theorisha needs eb6. If the answer to this is yes, mark the eb6 followingthe pattern for larishe (in the same manner you did forthe Ibeyi, discussed in the preceding paragraph). However,"Eyebale?" is not the last question. If the oracle answers no tothe question "Kaure?" then the eb6 for Olokun is automaticallymarked as eyebale. If the client is an aleyo who has Eleggua, this orisha might bestanding up for more carga (the secret ingredients packed intoEleggua's image to strengthen his ache) and reinforcement into

his clay tray; the diviner should try to mark this. If the client isa priest/ess, this question should be asked as well; and, if the answeris no to that, then the diviner should ask if Eleggua wantsa crown. This question should never be asked for an aleyo. The client needs to think about his commitment to this religion, perhaps having the reading of the head done eventually.A mazo (a heavily beaded necklace draped over an orisha'sshrine) should be thrown on this person; he should then salutehis godparents and the diviner should explain the reason forthese actions. After marking the client for ocha, the divinershould ask the oracle to close. If it will not, he needs to turn tothe list of eboses given for the parent odu, Okana.

1-5 Okanran Ose [Okana Oshe]: Jealousy is the mother of distrust. You can destroy everything by jealousy. Olofi complimented theparrot after it was mocked by everyone.Remember this: If you do not listen to advice you will notlive to be an old wise person. If you stand under a good andstrong tree, you will get shelter. If you verify what you see, youwill not be frightened. Respect the elders, even if they are deceased.Under this sign the following precautions should be taken intoconsideration. You must avoid gossip, distrust, and animal bites.Control your violent temper. Do not store anyone elses belongingsAll the bad luck that has been wished upon you will change ifyou listen to advice and do what you are told. People arecontinually gossiping and giving you the evil eye. A cleansing oroffering should be made to Oshun to avoid sickness of the stomach. This sign indicates a change. Try to move from where you areliving. If you own your home, make some renovations. Move thefurniture around. If possible, have a celebration to change theatmosphere. Do this as an offering to the Orisha Oshun. You mightsuffer from being stressed or tense. This condition has to be treated. You have relatives who suffer from this sickness. You do not havean adequate partner. If this sign comes out for a person who is

already initiated into Ocha, he /she may not live with a personwho is reddish in hair or skin color. You have suffered a greattragedy in the past and you think it is over. Be aware that theenemy has not given up yet. At times you feel weak in your knees, and your feet ache. Take care of your stomach. Have your bloodchecked. This sign indicates infertility, impotence, and hiddenvenereal diseases. Be careful with your digestive system, inparticular your stomach. Do not overeat. Try to avoid travelingfor a while. Pray for your deceased relatives, especially if theylived where you are living. Also, be aware if you have a familymember who visits often, this person is not to be trusted. Do notlend out your intimate clothing. If the person being advised is afemale, there is a possibility she will become pregnant or is already

pregnant. If this person is a young girl, she has to be warnedbefore she acts, or suffer the consequences. Avoid sitting at a tablewhere there are many people. This will lead to an upsettingsituation if someone is gossiping about you. Envy causes manydisturbances, which will lead to violence. Do not immerseyourself in the river, whether to bathe or swim. Someone inyour family looks at you with envy. You are lucky at gambling. When this sign comes with goodness [Ire], you should play thelottery. Do not use violence to solve your problems. Be morediplomatic when dealing with people

YORUBA LEGEND: Ose was an only child. He made hisparents lives miserable. He was always unruly. As a young man,

he was wild and did not make the right choices. His parents diedsuffering and wondering what was to become of their son. Whilealive, these parents did their utmost to help their son. They askedfamily members to assist in giving him direction. The son did notrespect his relatives. He continued to act the same way. Not wishingto change to better himself, he became a victim of hard times anda wanderer in the streets. One day, this man went to the river. Hebegan to cry desperately. He began to remember all the good thingshis parents had done for him. He fell asleep under the shade ofthe tree. He had a dream that his parents came to him, held him in

their arms, and cleansed him with a coconut. He awoke suddenlyand remembered the dream. He understood what it meant. He setout to accomplish what his parents indicated to him. He decidedto alter his life before it was too late. He went out to look forwork. He soon was able to have a good and productive life.

The Eboses for Okana Oche (1-S) There are two eboses that are automatically flagged in this odu:First, the client must clean his house physically and spiritually, for the dirt that is there attracts much negativity and spiritualheat to his life, and second, he must immediately give a massto the dead, working egun frequently. If these two things arenot enough to close the letter, the diviner should question egun, marking an eb6 to them so that all will go well in the client's life. The client may have unpaid debts with Oshun, and theseshould be paid immediately. If the client cannot remember makingany such unpaid promises, the diviner should ask, "Eboelese Oshun?" to see if an eb6 is needed; and if the answer is yes,he should mark eb6 following the guidelines given in chapter l's"Marking the Eboses, or Remedies for Odu." IfOshun does notneed eb6, recommend that the client give her an adimu anywayto ensure her goodwill.

1-6 Okanran Obara [Okana Obara]: Do not lose yourself in wrong

and malicious thoughts. Be aware when your capabilities are beingtested.Be careful of losing your head, it guides the rest of the body.Remember the spirit of the dead is still around. In the old dayswhen all who were initiated into Ocha went to the marketplaceand saw the children working, they blessed them. The childrenall became very prosperous. Whoever gets this sign has to be verycareful not to be used by others but to be blessed by them. Youare not to become a follower. Bad luck brings complications, distrust, and accidents. Avoid arguments, traveling, dog bites, andgetting into violent confrontations. Be considerate with yourpartner. Do not keep anyone elses belongings. Do not lie. Speakthe truth always. Many people are unfaithful to you. Do not damn

or blaspheme when you argue. Whoever argues with you, willalways want to win. Play the lottery and hope for good luck. Donot let anyone hit or touch your head. A lot of people think youare a liar, even when you speak the truth. You are backed up infinancial matters. You have a lot of business pending. You arelacking the most important talents that will bring these things toreality. Do not be a complainer. Move your furniture in your home.Keep your intimate clothes very clean. If you lie to anyone, youwill also lie to yourself. There is someone in your home who issuffering from pain in the groin. If there is anything in disrepair

in your home, get rid of it, as a cleansing [Ebo]. This will alsohelp to get rid of the bad luck. Be careful of fire. Dress in white fora few days. There are times that you do not sleep well. You do notlike to see yourself involved in legal matters. Under this sign theperson is lacking many things. Eventually, you may have to seekshelter with relatives. Your enemies are constantly speaking aboutyou. It is recommended that you do cleansing [Ebo] at the foot ofShango. Stay at home, so that when happiness comes your way,you will be there to receive it. Luck will come to you. Do notmistreat cats. If possible, have a cat for a pet. If you have alreadyreceived the Orisha Shango, buy a figurine of a horse and place itin your home. Again, do not argue. You will gain more by beingprudent. Do not be violent and throw the first punch. By beingpatient and prudent you will avoid fatal accidents. There is distrust, arguments, and disgust, with someone who has invaded yourprivacy. Speak the truth to solve a dispute. The key to your luckand success is the use of the truth. Be careful with electricity, thunder, and lightening. There is someone who thinks you are abragger. This person will soon be convinced that you are not.You have to say from time to time, Thank you, Shango, [MaferefunShango], for all your blessings. This sign indicates that you alwaysget your own way. You are very obstinate, and at times complain, even though you are well off. Be aware of people who wearuniforms, especially those who are authority figures. Respect your

elders. Listen to your parents advice. Speak of your plans andsecrets only with your parents and godparents. Do not help anyoneto lift things. Do not lend out money. By doing these things, theperson you help goes up while you go down. This sign indicatesthat you should pray. It also shows that the male has childrenwith more than one woman. The oldest child will be initiatedinto Ocha for his salvation. Take care of your head and frequentfevers. The person under this sign has business traits. Your luckis not in one place. You tend to appreciate music. Do not denyfood to anyone. When you do a job, make sure you get paid forit, because it will be difficult for you to get your money later.Okanran with goodness [Ire] is saying that you live in the suburbor country. Okanran with bad luck [Osobo] is saying that the

person lives in the city. Under this sign, you were born to be theboss and do not like anyone to tell you what to do. The advice ofyour partner will be beneficial. Treat him/her with respect. Do notcut, sell, or give away a pumpkin.YORUBA LEGEND: Oba went to the marketplace withObatala. Obatala asked Eshu to feed Elegua. Oba did cleansing[Ebo] at the marketplace. The next day he returned. There he sawa man going towards an alley. This man was carrying a bundle. He placed the bundle at the foot of a tree and ran away. It was abundle of money that was there to help anyone who found it.Oba used it to help his friends and many others.

The Eboses ofOkana Obara (1-6) When this odu opens and refuses closure, it automaticallymarks the following eboses that should be done by the client assoon as possible. First, the client must wear white as often aspossible to honor Obatala, for this orisha stands up on his behalfthroughout the reading. Also, if there is more than onechild in the home, the client might want to consider initiatingthe oldest to his orisha soon (it is probably either a child ofShang6 or Obatala). As soon as possible, the client mightwish to make eb6 at the feet of Shang6 through one of his

Page 16: 1.OKANA II II II I

priestesses; and if this is not enough to close the letter, anadimu of a white horse should be given at that time. Frequentofferings should also be made at the godparent's Obatala toensure his continued favor. If this letter refuses closure, Shang6 and Obatala could be standingup for more specific eboses. The diviner should ask, "Eb6elese [orisha's name]?" to both, marking what they each require.

1-7 Okanran Odi [Okana Odi]: Son or daughter of Yemaya-Donot be afraid of the dead or the sea. There is no stability in yourlife. You run after things in life which you cannot acquire.

All paths are closed but soon will open up. Once there was apath of luck and it was reversed. There is a tendency of strivingfor things that cannot be attained. Be careful about pricking anypart of the body. This will lead to a lasting sickness. If you areplanning a trip to the country, be careful where you walk. You arevery unstable. Avoid violence and ocean travel for a while. Yemayawill be your protector, even though the other Orishas claim tolook after you. Never get tired of doing good deeds for others, nomatter who asks for your help. You will have natural children andthose of Ocha as well. Do not worry about the wrong that hasbeen done to you. Yemaya, your Guardian Angel, will take care ofyou. You do not have strong faith. You have a lover but deny it tocomply with societys rules. Do not attempt to clear up gossip.

Your own brother or one from Ocha will betray you. You comefrom a family of seven brothers or sisters. Respect your elders. Donot hit any child on the head. Take care of your eyes. You willeventually be initiated into Ocha or receive the ceremony of thebeads [Collares]. If there is someone sick in your home, thatperson must do cleansing [Ebo]. Be careful when lifting heavyobjects. Be careful when walking that you do not slip. If yourmother is deceased pray for her. If she is alive bring her to thedoctor for a checkup. She has to be careful of illnesses of thestomach, abdomen, and liver. It is recommended that she doescleansing [Ebo] so that the sickness will not take over. Odi indicatesthat you are disrespectful to your mother and people with grayhair. You suffer from insomnia. At times visions are present. You

[Osobo], speaks of corruption, illnesses and death. The days, theearth, the sky, the sea, and well-being are indicated with [Ire].This sign indicates that here is where the first hole on the earthwas dug. The hole was used for a plot.YORUBA LEGEND: The nothing was an irresponsible anddisrespectful being. He never complied when given responsibilities. The mother always had to solve the problems caused by her son.He did so many wrong things that she decided to send him faraway. While he was away from his mother, he kept his tormentedway of life. A short time later, the son became ill with intestinalproblems. He was on the brink of death. His mother went toObas house. Oba told her to do a seven-day cleansing for hersons salvation. He had to receive the beads before the operationon his intestines. He was then initiated into Ocha. This motherdid everything with great faith. Through this great faith, truemotherly love, and the wisdom of Oba, the son returned to theliving world. Through medical science and the faith of the mother,a radical change occurred in the son. Happiness was attained withinthe family. Respect and love for a mother should never be denied.

The Eboses ofOkana Odi (1-7) If this letter will not close out on the initiallarishe prescribed,Yemaya is standing up in the reading. The diviner should tellthe client that if the orisha of the head is not known, it may be

Yemaya; and if another orisha has already claimed this client,Yemaya is close to him. If there is currently any sickness, the clientshould have a rogaci6n at her feet as eb6. Note that in thisodu, if the client's mother is alive, four snails should be addedto the rogaci6n-for this will save the mother's life, as well; andif the mother is dead, Yemaya (in her path known as YemayaAsesu) needs to be given eyebale in the drains after the rogaci6nis complete. If this is not enough to appease Yemaya and closethe odu, the diviner should now ask, "Eb6 elese Yemaya?" and ifthe answer is yes, the diviner must proceed to mark that whichis needed. When the eb6 is being completed, the client mustleave all his hopes, fears, and problems at her feet. Yemaya willtake care of everything.

1-8 Okanran Eji Ogbe [Okana Eyionle] When you think you aregoing to be robbed, secure your home. Think with your wholemind. What is known is not to be questioned. Do not disclosewhat you plan to do.

This sign with goodness brings well being, longevity, and other good things in life.Ocha says that what you want to know you already know.

People have a great war against you so that you can never besuccessful. The Orishas who will help you are Obatala and St.Lazarus. If possible, have a dog as a pet. Avoid getting into gossipand giving opinions where you work. Bad luck influencesdisagreements so try to avoid these. Be kind and considerate withyour partner. Avoid violence. Be careful of accidents. Okanran EjiOgbe indicates the head and leadership. The head controls therest of the body. If this sign comes with bad luck [Osobo], thefact that it indicates leadership means nothing. It will be theopposite. There is no firmness. It might even create mentaldisturbances. If it comes with good luck [Ire], it is beneficial.Using the analogy of fire, it can be good or destructive. The personunder this sign might suffer from stomach illness. It is not wiseto ridicule anyone who is handicapped. This sign indicates thatthe person is adventurous in nature. Long journeys to far awayplaces are seen in this sign. Though you are behind in financialmatters, do not complain. Try to wear white clothing. Do notdrink alcoholic beverages. Do not keep anyone elses belongings. If you do; do not dispose of them of your own free will. Whenyou feel depression caused by tension and stress, go out dancing.Do not hold a grudge towards anyone. The Eboses ofOkana Osa (1-9) When this letter falls and refuses closure, the odu marks specificeboses. First, the client needs a rogaci6n at the feet ofObatala; however, because Oya speaks so strongly in this letter, the cleansing should include nine different cool, white things.Once the rogaci6n is done, cool fruits should be offered toOya and then Agany{l. If this is not enough to close the odu,Obatala, Agany{l, and Oya might be standing up for eb6. Thediviner should ask each Spirit, "Eb6 elese [name of orisha]?"marking what is needed following the guidelines in chapter l's"Marking the Eboses, or Remedies for Odu." Having explored the previous possibilities, the odu points out

that the client needs to work egun frequently, giving them manyspiritual masses. In addition, they may need an eb6, and the divinershould ask, "Eb6 elese egun?" marking that which is needed.

The Eboses ofOkana Ofun (1-10) In this sign, it is very important that the client clean his housephysically and spiritually, because many dangerous, negativethings have gathered there; and once this is done, it must be keptneat and clean always. If this is not enough to close the letter, then the diviner must also recommend a rogaci6n, and tenthings sacred to Obatala should be included in this cleansing. If the letter will still not close, the diviner should ask, "Eb6elese ajogun?" If the answer is yes, then a gourd of honey, cornmeal, and water should be put to the warriors, and the divinershould mark anything else needed by following the line ofquestioning given in "Marking the Eboses, or Remedies forOdu" in chapter 1. A serious osogbo or refusal of closure by Okana OfUn couldmark the need for ebori (a blood offering to one's physical andspiritual head), and the diviner must ask, "Eb6 elese ori?" If

the answer is yes, two white pigeons and doves must be fed tothe client's head so it may have strength.

will become or is ill. Your home is very humid. You should movefrom there. You have tried to move but found it very difficult. Ifyou have anything that belonged to a deceased, get rid of it. Youhave to do cleansing [Ebo] to divert an illness that will be fatal. When Okanran Owonrin appears, indicating illness, the cleansings[Ebo] have to be done at the foot of St. Lazarus. If you becomewell after the cleansings, make offerings to St. Lazarus and begrateful. Soon he began gettingvisitors who would bring him the basic essentials. A few monthslater the villagers were no longer calm and hard working. Themysterious man had converted the village into a living hell. Heand his friends committed the most atrocious acts. Manymessengers were sent to seek help at Obas house but they neverarrived. It was thought that Olordumare had abandoned this village.Actually, it was not that the messengers did not want to go intothe village, but they were captured and imprisoned by the maliciousmen from that village. The last resort was to send an old, invalid

man as a messenger to meet with Shango at Obas house. Apreparation was made of herbs and placed on painted trays. Theman was now ready to go and meet the enemy. A message wassent to the mayor to have the people evacuate their premises.During this time there was a big celebration going on at the evilmans house. It was easy for the old, invalid man, the highestpriest of white magic [Babalao], to set the house on fire. When thehouse went up in flames, the owner and his followers tried to putout the fire. The Babalao went in and freed the messengers whowere kept in the dungeon. All the malicious men died in the fire. The herbs with water were then used to wash away all the malice.Good prevailed over evil.

The Eboses ofOkana Owani (1-11) If this odu opens and there is sickness either in the client or hishome, an eb6 must be made to Babaluaiye. The diviner shouldfirst ask, "Eleke de Asohano?" and then, "Eb6 elese Asohano?"(Asohano is one of the names for Babaluaiye.) If neither of theseis accepted, the client is marked for the reception of this orisha, and he must be received as soon as possible. The next question to ask in this letter is, "Eb6 elese Eleggua?"

and then, "Eb6 elese Ochosi?" The diviner must mark what isneeded. Finally, if the letter will still not close, egun may be standing upin the letter. The diviner should ask, "Eb6 elese egun?" markingwhat is needed. Whether or not they want eb6, the client shouldgive them some type of adimu, a mass, and much time shouldbe spent working with these spirits.

If this sign comes with Ire, your difficult timeswill improve. If it comes with Osobo, specifically with sickness, you should heed the advice given. If you comply with the advicewithin twelve hours you will be saved. When Okana Eyila appears, you have to receive the white beads representing the Orisha Obatala.

This is done to alleviate the scornful attitude of the individual.Never react upon the first comment that is made to you. Thinktwice before you react in an arrogant manner. person besides your spouse. Be aware that in a difficult time onlythe spouse will be able to help you. When eating at your lovershouse, be careful. Hetried to prevent the further damage that the fire could cause. Thewicked brother would dig a deeper hole enabling the fire to getstronger. The raging flames and sparks would cause severe damage. One day this evil brother obtained great wealth from winning thelottery. He bought new clothes. He threw all his old things away.He then visited his brother to show off his new attire and wealth. The humble brother was truly happy. He thought his brother hadcome to help him start a business. The malicious brother only

had the intention of mocking and laughing at his humble brother.A few days later, after participating in many orgies and becomingdrunk, he set fire to his own house and perished in the flames.

The Eboses ofOkana Ejila (1-12) In this letter, there are certain specific eboses that must be done.First, the elekes are marked automatically, and Obatala's shouldbe worn frequently, especially in times of stress. If there is sicknessin the client, he needs to have a silver idi (bracelet) washed inomiero (herbal waters) and fed with the diviner's Obatal:i; thisshould be worn at all times. Also, adimu should be given toObatala and Shang6 to guarantee their help and goodwill inall things.

If this is not enough to close the odu, then the diviner shouldask, "Eb6 elese Obatala?" and, "Eb6 elese Shang6?" He mustthen mark what is needed.

arguing, hitting anyone, and traveling for a while. Do not storeanyone elses belongings. Be kind and considerate with your partner.Take care of your health. A simple sickness can lead tocomplications, especially with the skin. If you owe something toSt. Lazarus, pay your debt. Even if you are initiated into Ocha, you should not keep a dog as a pet your home. Do not mistreatdogs. Do not be obstinate. You dislike being questioned aboutyour doings. You do not pay much attention to the things have todo. Others criticize you. Sometimes you have immoral thoughts. You have to change your ways because someday something badmight happen. You might become a homeless beggar in the streets. If married, you have to treat the spouse well; otherwise there willbe a separation. Never make promises that you cannot keep. Donot drink alcoholic beverages. This sign indicates problems withjustice. That is why you have to make offerings and comply withthe Orisha Ochosi. The advisor should be sure to make thesignificance of this sign very clear. It is important to know thatone should not commit a violent act, not even against ones self. This sign also indicates the path to spiritualism influenced by St.Lazarus, who rose from the dead by the Lords command. In thesigns that St. Lazarus influences, there are extremes. The mostdifficult ones are those that deal with sickness. The most sublime

is to deal with spiritualism. If it comes with Ire, all which is wellis received from the saints and their goodness. If it comes withOsobo, expect sickness, tragedy, obstacles, and turmoil in andout of the home, gossip, and arguments leading to death itself. InOkanra Ika the Orishas who speak are: Obatala, Elegua, Ochosi,Shango, Oshun, Yegua, Oya, Nana Buruku, and St. Lazarus.YORUBA LEGEND: The word snake once referred to a manwhom many women solicited. He had a wife who loved andrespected him yet he still went out and did immoral acts withothers. These were totally against the principles of decency but hedid not care. One day he went to Obas house with his wife whowas a believer. The sign of Osobo came out for her. A cleansingwas assigned to help prevent the bad luck that would afflict her

husband. Offerings to the Orishas St. Lazarus and Elegua were tobe made. The husband ignored the advice. When his wife remindedhim of the cleansings he laughed. A short time later the husbandbroke out with leprosy all over his body. This terrible afflictioncaused his arms and legs to fall off. Being desperate, he sent hiswife to Obas house for consultation. She was read and comforted. She was told to go back to her husband and remind him of theofferings that were to be made at the time of his reading. He wastold to take two whole stalks of bananas and eight pigeons to thepath where Obatala used to walk. He had been told to hold fourpigeons in each hand and then he would have escaped his horriblefate. Without a doubt, he would have been cured of the illnessthat he contracted because of his wrong doings. He was not cured

because he did not follow the advice indicated to him. As a result,he had to crawl for the rest of his life.

The Eboses ofOkana Metanla (1-13) In this letter, the client needs to have the elekes; and withthem, he should receive the eleke ofBabaluaiye. Also, thewarriors must be had as soon as possible, for they will fightall the osogbos predicted in this sign. Finally, if the client has

The Eb6 of Okana Merindilogtin (1-16) Whatever the orishas mark as larishe should be done quickly.

There are no other eboses for this odu beyond taking the clientto see Ifa. If the letter will not close, the diviner should proceedwith the eboses listed for the parent odu.

The ~boses of the Parent OduHaving exhausted the options of larishe and eb6 in the compositeodu, the diviner must now turn to the parent odu to find a method ofclosure. This sign, Okana, contains within itself many offerings andrituals to placate both the sign and the orishas that are speaking. Theeboses for this parent letter follow.

The diviner should first determine if the client needs a rogaci6nby asking, "Ebori?" If the answer is yes, the rogaci6n should begiven at the feet of the orisha that is standing up in this odu. The next question that the diviner should ask when trying toclose this sign is, "Eb6 elese Eleggua?" If the answer is yes, thenthree fresh fish should be smeared liberally with red palm oiland given to Eleggua overnight. With the shells, it must be determinedwhat is to be done with the fish once the eb6 is complete.Fresh fish should be used; it would be better if the fishwere recently caught and still alive; it will have more ache. If that eb6 is not needed, or if the letter will still not close, thenext eb6 to ask is, "Eb6 elese gbogbo ajogun?" which translatesto "Eb6 at the feet of all the warriors?" If the odu takes this sacrifice, the warriors Eleggua, Ogun, and 6sun should be given arooster, two pigeons, and a guinea hen. If the client does nothave the initiation of the warriors, or if it cannot be made forsome time, then this should be done to the diviner's orishas. The next question to ask is, "Eb6 elese Ogun?" If the answer isyes, then the client should give Ogun a knife that is smearedwith red palm oil; the knife and Ogun should be fed a rooster. This way, Ogun will fight with the knife, and the client will nothave to fight alone. This orisha will protect him from all harmand accidents involving iron.

If the client has Ogun, the following eb6 can be done to thatorisha after the preceding eb6 is complete: A name (a type ofyam) is brought before Oglin's shrine, and with this the divinercleans the client spiritually. The root is then given to the orisha;the vine is allowed to grow freely until it is as long as the clientis tall. It must never be allowed to grow taller than he. Thisfiame is left there until it dies. If the osogbo is severe and the client does not have Ogun, aftergiving Ogun the knife and rooster, the diviner should liberallysmear a piece of red meat with red palm oil and cleanse the clientwith this. The meat is left with Oglin, and the next day he mustbe asked for the method of disposal. The client should removethe meat and take it to its proper place as dictated by Ogun.

If no other eb6 will suffice, ask Eleggua if the home of the clientneeds his protection. If the answer to this is yes, both dirtand ashes must be taken from the four corners of the client'shome, wrapped in red cloth, and given to Eleggua. He will guardthe foundation of the client's home. Finally, in all combinations of Okana it is possible that the clientwill need to receive Aganyli. The diviner should use this onlyas a last resort, asking, "Eb6 elese Aganyu?" and then, "Eleke deAganyu?" If neither the eb6 nor the eleke of this orisha will satisfythe letter, the diviner then asks, "Koshe Aganyu?" whichmeans "Should Aganyli be received?" If the answer is yes, the clientmust receive the orisha as soon as possible. When no other eb6 will satisfy the letter, the sacrifice needed is a

four-legged animal to the orisha whose diloggun has been consulted. There is no need to ask the oracle to close because eye bale of four legswill automatically suffice to close the odu; and the sacrifice must bedone as soon as possible. No ita is given for this eb6.Also, note that when marking the eboses or larishes for any odu inthe family of Okana, there are certain traditional substances used forthis letter. If an eyebale is marked, the following animals are traditionalin this sign: a rooster, two pigeons, a guinea hen, and a goat ora ram (when four legs are needed). For adimu offerings: Honey, cornmeal, bananas, toasted corn, smoked fish, jutia (an African bush rat)
