Official confirmation of the acquisi-tion of the entire radio-Panatrope-rec-ord division of the Brunswick-Balke-Collender Co., this city, by sale toWarner Brothers Pictures, Inc., eman-ated from Brunswick headquarters,here, today. 'The name of the new cor-poration has not yet been decided, butit is said, will feature the Brunswicktrade name strongly. Executive quar-ters will probably be moved from thiscity to New York, it was disclosed.

Active direction and administrationof the affairs of the new company willbe in the hands of the present execu-tives of the Radio-Panatrope Divisionof the Brunswick company, and gen-eral policies in effect now will continue,it was stated.

The Brunswick -Warner transactionincludes all present factory facilities,consisting of over one million squarefeet of space, fully equipped and mod-ernized, and will be immediately ex-panded to inset the greater require-ments certain to result from the ag-gressive p r o g r a ms made possiblethrough the alliance. Objectives of thetwo large industrial units brought to-gether with the alliance, are said tobe parallel along research, productionand sales lines, and the combining ofefforts is expected to be of extremebenefit to Brunswick products and tothe Brunswick trade.

Definite announcement of new poli-cies will be made as soon as the amal-gamation details are concluded.

Plans for the merger of the AmradCorp., set manufacturing firm of Med-ford, Mass., with the Magnavox Co.,speaker manufacturing organization ofSan Francisco, are understood to bepractically concluded, it was reportedby the Crosley Radio Corp., this city,Powel Crosley, Jr., being chairman of

Vice-presidencies in recognition oftheir successful achievements as de-partmental executives, since its entryinto radio set manufacture, of theGrigsby-Grunow Co. were today con-ferred upon Herbert E. Young, DuaneWanamaker, Herman E. Kranz and A.C. Winnan, at the April meeting of theGrigsby-Grunow directorate and Ber-tram J. Grigsby, president of the cor-poration, became chairman of the boardand chief executive officer with Wil-liam C. Grunow, hitherto vice-presidentand general manager, becoming theMajestic president.

The awards of higher official recog-nition for all primary executives of theorganization have been in the makingfor more than a year. The Grigsby-Grunow Co. has been known from itsentry into radio as being administeredby a relatively small group of officialswho did not know the meaning of spar-ing their time or effort for companydevelopment. Some time ago theMessrs. Grigsby and Grunow deter-mined to arrange, in addition to thematerial financial rewards which havebeen won by their nearest associates,corporate posts covering each divisionof company operations.

The new chairman, Mr. Grigsby andthe new president, Mr. Grunow, havewritten in their personal careers somuch radio industrial history as to re-quire little biographical outline here.Together they brought their concernfrom automotive parts manufacture onan inconspicuous scale into radio bat-tery eliminator manufacture on a massproduction basis. In May, 1928, theyintroduced the Majestic radio set, des-tined to make the corporation worththrough its sales a total of $120,000,000at the highest valuation of Majesticshares during 1929, after a literal startfrom 'scratch.'

Each of the four new vice-presidentshas been with the concern since itsentry into set, manufacture. Mr. Young,now vice-president in charge of sales,fifteen or eighteen years ago a retailsalesman in the talking machine lineand subsequently with the Victor Talk-ing Machine Co. and the Sonora Pho-

Win-nan, as vice-president in charge of pur-chases, has placed company commit-ments ever since it began in order asmuch as $1,000 worth of an item andhas seen the Majestic requirementsgrow to a point where it has beennecessary for suppliers of the factoryto detail a salesman exclusively to coverGrigsby-Grunow requirements.

J. T. Overlock has been elected vice-president and treasurer of the corpora-tion. R. R. Trimarco, formerly assis-tant secretary -treasurer, has beenelected secretary.

Lyric radio was put conspiciouslyinto the little group of lines whosemakers exhibit assets totaling tens ofmillions of dollars at a sales conven-tion of distributors conducted at NorthTonawanda Tuesday by the All Amer-ican - Mohawk Corporation and theRudolph Wurlitzer Co., the last-namedconcern for eighty years distinguishedin every branch of applied musical art.

Eugene R. Farny, president of theAll American Mohawk organization andFarny Wurlitzer, vice-president of theWurlitzer company, with associate offi-cials governing every department of theallied institutions at North Tonawanda,welcomed a party of about one hundredand twenty distributing officials. Amajority of Lyric national wholesaledistribution was represented and suchfirms as did not appear for Tuesday'smeeting had earlier conferences withthe factory covering matters coiningbefore this week's convention.

Confidence, enthusiasm and goodhumor over having completely escapedany 1929 difficulties due to over -produc-tion of merchandise ruled the meeting.In response, the factory officers con-vincingly and unsensationally laidbare a program of 1930 operations, andshowed the first product of 1930 Lyricradio, merchandise which provoked pro-longed applause from the assembly.

"Lyric is in radio to stay" was theburden of the addresses of the factoryheads and in submission of their sin-cerity mention was made of the seniorcompany's prolonged and immense ex-perience in musical instrument manu-facture and merchandising, resultingin a current balance sheet totalingassets in excess of $27,000,000. Thefactory pledged that its entire re-sources, involving within only the pastyear an expenditure of more than $1,-000,000 for manufacturing additions atNorth Tonawanda, would be committedprincipally to radio henceforward andthe sales company re -affirmed the poli-cies of aggressive and far-sighted mer-

No -Radio Day

The challenge set forth in this place last week, Is theGolden Era of radio beginning or has it ended, naturally hasattracted widespread attention among those who conceive thatthey are in the business to stay. The more general prac-tice has been to refer to radio as being in its infancy. Thepopular tendency is to look upon it, because of its magicaleight years to date, as an industry that never can grow up,that will never meet by half the obligations of a ripe matu-rity. If that is literally true, most of the sober ability andconservative and constructive capital in the line will eventu-ally get out of it. For there is no inducement for proven com-mercial skill to remain in a position where its logical rewardcan at any time be destroyed by short-sighted or self-seekingacts of irresponsible competition.

As great undertakings as the automobile and the movingpicture have been told by banking and investment securityauthorities at moments of speculative excess in their earlyhistory either to clean up or shut up. It is very plain thatsuch an interval now is at hand in radio. It is open and appar-ent that the business, if in its infancy, can be killed in ado-lescence. It is by no means impossible, and not far from prob-able, that unless rigid safeguards are established by concertedeffort now, there will never again be the proportionate profitattainable in radio that there has been for the first decade ofits existence.

We are of the opinion that a time has come for sternermeasures than the academic expedients which co-operativecontacts so far have originated. There is the suggestion thatproduction data be exchanged to guard against too rapid fac-tory pace, an excellent procedure after sanity has been re-gained but not necessarily an arbitrary first offense. Thereis sustained opposition to the mid -season introduction of newmodels, a precaution so simple as to recommend itself to any-one but a voluntary candidate for receivers. It has been pro-posed that price -cutting, suicidal discounts, exaggerations insales and advertising and the thousand petty larcenies thatmake up radio merchandising be treated with everythingfrom moral suasion to lysol and vigilance committees. Allthese are good enough ways to lock the door before the horseis stolen. They are excellent preventatives against recur-rence of the deep-seated disorders which have made radio asick business.

For a crisis, such as at present prevails and has existed, adanger of which $30,000,000 frozen manufacturing credit anddefalcations running as high as fifty per cent. of the dealersin given areas have been only trifling parts, more drastic stepsare urgent. It would pay the radio business, and pay it hand-somely, to stop the manufacture of sets completely and staystopped until an overwhelming accumulated demand permittedorderly resumption of profitable sale. It would pay the busi-ness still more handsomely-instead of fooling around with

Radio Week-to set a No Radio Day and on that day cancelthe recognition of and stop shipment to every dealer in thefield. There would be time and a -plenty later to re -appointonly such retailers as could prove a right to it by their pastperformance. It would profit the business fundamentally andpermanently if the several license pacts adopted it as an in-exorable rule to cancel the privilege of any licensee, and shuthim out of the industry, whenever his royalty obligations be-came thirty days past due. It is a farce to expect protectiveforce from an agreement to rights whose monetary recogni-tion becomes in practice of indefinite elasticity.

These components of No Radio Day call for understand-ing and action. This industry cannot sensibly complain thatthere are too many sets and tubes and speakers being made,if all of its important producers are afraid to stop makingtheir own. This industry cannot weep crocodile tears over thedeep demoralization that comes from too many jobbers andtoo many dealers, if the major lines dare not cut jobbers anddealers off lest some fly-by-night over -night put them on.

Either radio has the brains and courage to assure itsfuture, or it has not. After a few more paroxysms such ashave shaken the field to its roots, in 1925 and again in 1929,there will not be any future worthy of commercial develop-ment to assure.

Leadership Essential

The proudest boast the radio -music business can make isthat during the uncertain year of 1929 it won $182,000,000in leadership of its greatest institution, the Radio Corporationof America. For if the time ever comes when this industrycannot claim a leader of such proportions, the business willno longer be headed onward and upward, but down and out.

Yet a gross revenue of so staggering a sum as the Corpo-ration was able to report-barring the chaotic fourth quarterof the year in general business it assuredly would have passedthe two hundred million mark and possibly have approacheda quarter billion-is regarded as merely a detail in the basisand objectives of the organization by its management. Itis true that the figures signify a considerably greater totalpatronage than is received by any other organism in radio.It is certain that they compare creditably with the gross re-ceipts of other industrial leaders in other lines, like Swift infood, National Dairy in milk products and American Tobaccoin cigars and cigarettes.

But what the management of the Radio Corporation isworking at relentlessly, and will as certainly attain as it hasgone into the hundreds of millions from an initial year's in-come of less than ten, is responsible leadership and inspira-tion of its fellows in the field, the creation of a sense of secu-rity that those whose livelihood depends upon radio should befar better safeguarded than at present can be in the eventsof day to day, or week to week, or month to month. Though

the company transacts only a minor fraction of the total saleof radio product throughout America, it aspires so to conductits own business as to win the emulation and unstinted co-operation of all similarly substantial factors in the trade.

That so colossal a plan cannot be realized in the year, ortwo, or five that have passed is self-evident in the tangle ofhuman circumstance and events. Having had thrust upon itburdens of scientific investigation, international communica-tion, unlimited and hitherto unco-ordinated manufacturingfacilities, broadcasting service to an entire nation, patent andinvention recognition and the practical conduct of every formof home and public entertainment from Photophone news reelsto Keith-Orpheum theatres, no human power in less than thepresent time could have wrought more than the very advan-tageous structure which is now planned for definite accom-plishment. It is significant that out of its greatest year'sincome the company netted by no means its greatest propor-tionate yearly profit. Millions upon millions have been spentto create and to make permanent for the future guidance ofthe radio industry a more compact, effective and serviceableleading institution than the business has ever had before.

I have always been interested in your editorials, not only because they havea "kick" tempered with humor, but underneath I can usually find good philoso-phy. The one in your April 9th issue, headed "Have You a Radio Set?," is noexception and also reflects some of the statements I have made recently.

There is, however, a bit of humor in this editorial that reminds me of theadvertisement which read, "A beautiful grand piano for sale by a woman whomust move with mahogany legs." Quoting from your editorial, you say "Thereis a store in Sixth avenue, New York, selling a job whose maker quit about twoyears ago for $30, set, speaker and tubes complete." This certainly is interesting.

Please inform me what other makers there are in the business manufacturingradio sets of questionable quality, workmanship, and performance, let alone hav-ing the characteristics of over -production, who will also "quit ... for $30." Iam sure I could collect a large number of $30 units for the elimination of manysuch radio set makers for $30 each, and that such elimination would benefit theradio industry. Please let me hear from you promptly while I still have somemoney left.

RCA Stockholders to

Vote on Finance PlanThe community of interest which al-

ready exists between the Radio Corp.of America, the General Electric Co.and the Westinghouse Electric Co. willbe further solidified and organizedunder a plan, details of which weremailed to stockholders yesterday, itwas learned in financial circles. Stock-holders will be asked to approve theplan at the annual meeting to be heldMay 6.

Although nothing official has beensaid, it is believed that new financingwill probably be announced togetherwith proposals for further consolidat-ing certain mutual manufacturingactivities. One of the first steps inthat direction was taken last Decem-ber with the formation of the RCA-Radiotron Co., which combines the radiotube manufacturing activities of thethree companies. Stock interest in thisorganization is divided among thethree with RCA holding 50 per cent..General Electric 30 per cent. and West-inghouse the remaining 20 per cent.

We have an extensive radioengineering department and we proposeto invest further and heavily in thelaboratory, for we believe that is essen-tial to good product. As a result of allthis, some of our distributors have saidto us that they would like to have Lyricradio stamped 'Product of Wurlitzer.'We do not solicit this ourselves. Anyof our trade who feel that our nameand career will assist their sale of theproduct may use this phrase.

"The San Francisco suit was broughtagainst the Frederick H. ThompsonCo., of that city, a distributing firmhandling Majestic products. The Grigs-by-Grunow Co., however, is not a partyto the suit. We understand that theThompson company will appeal the de-cision to the United States CircuitCourt of Appeals immediately and ob-tain a stay of further action pendingthe appeal. No injunction, however,has been issued against the Grigsby-Grunow Co.

"The suit by the Magnavox Co. wasbased on an alleged violation of itspatents on a certain type of dynamicspeaker. The Majestic Colotura dyna-mic speaker is of an entirely differentprinciple and its design in no way con-flicts with that of the Magnavox typespeaker."

Incidentally, Herb brought back withhim one of the two birds in Americathat are able to shift for themselves.As Ripley would say, "Believe it or not"but this bird is able to secure its ownbirdseed from a little cart, attached tothe cage by a string, by pulling theribbon and holding on to it with itsfoot until the food receptable is within"feeding" distance of the cage. As soonas the bird's hold is released the cartrolls away from the cage again. Ina similiar manner, the bird secures itswater from a thimble attached to astring lowered in a glass of water.

Therumors, in one form or another, havecirculated in the financial district forseveral months and last week reacheddaily newspaper circulation, to be fol-lowed immediately by official negation.

It is pointed out that, regardless ofnegotiations that may unofficially havetaken place between the GramophoneCo., Ltd., of London and the ColumbiaGraphophone Co., Ltd., in Great Bri-tain, the Columbia Phonograph Co. inAmerica has never been under discus-sion in any foreign undertaking.

Recently one of the small Kentuckydealers of the Griffith Victor Distribut-ing Corp., this city, billed the whole-sale company with $3.00 for servicecharge, explaining that the set he hadpurchased did not give satisfactory re-sults, and that after a radio man hadlooked it over, he found the trouble wasdue to a tool which had been left inthe chassis. The Griffith companyturned down his charge, explaining thatdealers are expected to make minor ad-justments on instruments shipped.The dealer wrote to the Griffith com-pany as follows:

"Reply to your letter. Suppose asurgeon makes an abdominal operationupon you and sews an instrument upin you and in a few weeks you beginto hurt inwardly. Do you blame thesurgeon for sewing it up in you or doyou just consider it your bad luck?

"Your mechanic who built the R-32Victor in question left a wrench in thedelicate machinery in the part underthe tubes and the friction seemed tohave caused the trouble. Our experttook the tool out and I am mailing itto you. The adjustment charge issmall and we will not ask you to allowit, but I hope this will not happenagain."

The other officers of the New Eng-land Distributing Co. are Royal K.Abbott, treasurer and general mana-ger; Edward C. Bonia, vice-president,in charge of sales in New Hampshire;A. V. Kidd, secretary, in charge ofsales in Maine, and Mark Kindt, ser-vice manager.

Arrival of the new Philco D.C. radioin Boston is announced by Joseph L.Milhender, treasurer and general man-ager of Milhender Electric Supply Co.,Philco wholesale distributor.

"The new model 40," said Mr. Mil -hender, "is an all -electric, screen -gridradio for use on direct current of 95to 135 volts. Now the radio users re-siding in direct current districts canenjoy for the first time all the pleas-ures of Philco balanced -unit radio. Al-though there are but very few districtssupplying D.C. current to users, a greatnumber of people living in Boston andother large cities must have D.C. re-ceiving sets because many of the largeapartment houses now being built aregenerating their own electric current.These sets are suitable for use in suchplaces."

Among the larger exhibitors at theModern Homes exhibit will be Majes-tic Distributors, Inc., the local whole-saler for the Grigsby-Grunow Co.

The Standard Stores, 371 Washing-ton street, reports a large volume ofsales the past week on Sterling radios.

A line of miniature portable elec-tric radios, weighing less than twentypounds each and using built-in powerspeakers, has been introduced by theBender Radio Co., 84 Shipman street,this city. G. 'Binder is head of theBender organization, whose sets arelicensed under RCA, Hazeltine andLatour patents.

The line consists of two sets, modelA listing at $58, complete with tubes,and model B, listing at $68, completewith tubes. Felt lined leatheretteportable cases are furnished for thesesets at an additional cost of $7.

Model A is a five -tube set, is eight-een inches high, sixteen inches wideand nine inches deep. The circuit con-sists of one stage of radio frequency,two stages of audio frequency ampli-fication impedance coupled power out-put, and one stage detector 227 withcontrolled regeneration.

Model B is of practically the samedimensions, but uses three screen gridtubes, one 245 power tube and one 280type rectifier. A new method of coup-ling is said to be used in this set. Thethree screen grid tubes represent twostages of radio frequency amplificationand a screen grid power detector.

The sets are housed in modernisticcabinets of walnut finish. Both modelshave attractively designed speakergrille cloths.

SPRING SET BUSINESSFADA IN POPULAR DEMAND

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Friday.

Although the radio business gener-ally compares very favorably with thesame period during 1929, a general un-easiness on the part of the averageradio dealer throughout the KansasCity territory has been noted by GeorgeHartman, general sales manager forthe Western Radio Co., distributors forAtwater Kent.

Mr. Hartman has spent considerabletime during the past three months outon "the firing line." The little dealer,particularly in Kansas, is having con-siderable trouble getting credit. In agreat number of cases the banker andcommercial house in the smaller townshave dumped the dealer's paper, a num-ber of deposits were pulled just beforepayment on taxes is due, and the littlebanks are loaded up with loans. Thatthis condition will be prevalent untilthe country has another good crop yearis the conclusion reached by Mr. Hart-man.

Industrial labor conditions have hadtheir effect in the general uneasiness,and have been particularly apparent inKansas City. Laboring men keep moneyin circulation. It is hardly believable,but nevertheless true, that a five percent. fluctuation makes all the differ-ence between good and bad times andthis five cent. difference depends large-ly upon the laboring man. It is hismoney more than that of any othertype of person in the business worldof today which is so completely in cir-culation when he has it, and so com-pletely out when he doesn't have it.

However, sales for the Western RadioCo. and others are holding up, andcompare well with the same period dur-ing 1928.

Fada here reports a very satisfac-tory business for the past month andthe last week has seen conditions forthis firm pick up considerably. Accord-ing to W. E. Woods, branch manager,"business is whooping it up." TheJones Store sold 60 Fada radios lastSaturday afternoon and Monday morn-ing which represents the largest saleof radios the Jones Store has ever hadin a similar period of time. A cabinetmodel Fada is placed in front of everyelevator in the block -square store, everydoor, and even the time clocks - inordr to sell the employes as well ascustomers. The radio is given one en-tire window on Main and one onTwelfth street, two of the busiest cor-ners in town.

Orders are coming in, also, from theterritory, Mr. Woods said, and condi-tions outside Kansas City seem to bevery good for this firm. The TopekaRadio & Electric Co., Topeka, Kan.,Fada dealer, sold 63 in ten days, andis keeping up the pace. This firm isdoing a great deal to overcome the evilof home demonstration. The salesman,when the customer asks for a homedemonstration, says: "Why, certainly,

Mrs. Blanks, but you know, you wouldnot like to have it in your home if ithad been in a home where there wasconsumption or typhoid, would you?"Of course, she answers "No." "Well,if we send it out to any home, we haveto send it to everyone who asks for it."This nips home demonstration in thebud more quickly than any other meth-od that has been tried.

Fada business is so good, accordingto Mr. Woods, that thirteen Model 40'swere sold in one week, although themodel, which is new, had not yet evenbeen announced.

Kenneth G. Gillespie, formerly Kan-sas City radio sales representative forthe Stromberg-Carlson Tel. Mfg. Co.,has been appointed manager of theKansas City office, which controls thedistribution of Stromberg-Carlson setsin Missouri, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas,Oklahoma, Colorado, New Mexico, Ne-braska, Utah, Montana and Arizona.Mr. Gillespie, who has been with theStromberg-Carlson company here forten years, will have charge of boththe telephone and radio ends of thebusiness.

At the present time business for theStromberg - Carlson company here isgood, according to Mr. Gillespie. TheKansas City office has had practicallythe same increase in business the firstquarter as the entire company, whoseexperience, according to a report fromthe home office, has been that the Janu-ary business this year was 80 per cent.greater than January, 1928; Februarybusiness was 40 per cent. greater thanthe same period last year; and Marchshowed a 30 per cent. increase-this inspite of the fact that the first sixmonths of 1929 presented a new peakin the company's United States radiobusiness.

The Sterling Radio Co., according toL. C. Truesdell, advertising manager,is up to its quota. The company isworking with the dealers to get themto make telephone canvasses for newprospects, and are helping develop outside sales organizations. These factors,combined with the color tone test, arestimulating business.

C. M. Willis, sales manager for Ster-ling, and Jimmy Rassmussen, managerat Wichita, are spending a two-weekvisit in San Antonio, Houston and OldMexico.

H. C. Bonfig just recently returnedfrom the Kansas City Chamber of Com-merce trade trip which lasted one weekand took the trippers south into Louis-iana and Texas.

Good results are being obtained fromthe courtesy tube inspection month.That and sales effort have combinedto increase nicely general tube sales.Mr. Truesdell now is working up acooperative advertising program whichwill be carried out by distributors ofall radios in Kansas City during Apriland May. This drive is designed tostimulate general interest in radio.

Things are opening up very nicelyfor the Kansas City Distributing Corp.,with Sparton radios. J. W. Evans,general manager, just returned from acomprehensive survey of the entire ter-ritory, and reports that things lookgood. Distributors are getting back tothe merchandising level from the pricelevel where they have been for sometim and this is beneficially influencingthe business. Model 589 Sparton isperhaps the best seller at the presenttime.

The Paul Music Store, Inc., held theformal opening of its new shop at itsold location, recently. A throng at-tended the opening. Souvenirs of ashtrays and glassware of other descrip-tions were given away.

The Paul shop is now one of the mostbeautifully appointed emporiums in thiscity. No effort has been spared to makethe store beautiful, but at the sametime there has been no sacrifice ofhome -like atmosphere which has beeninstrumental in the success of theestablishment.

Cigarettes and ash trays are placedabout the store, both downstairs andupstairs. Sets are draped with batiquemetalline, walls are of Kraftex whichproduce an antiqued effect, and thelight effects are modernistic. Mirrorsin each end of the long window givethe effect to customers along the streetof four blocks of radio stores.

There are easy chairs placed aboutand everything is such to make thecustomer feel delighted with but com-fortable in his surroundings. Flowersfrom all over the United States, frompersonal and business friends, weresent to the store for the opening. Thecompany has added a selected line ofgifts such as small lamps, electricclocks and other things that might beused to advantage on or near a beau-tiful cabinet radio.

With the discontinuance by the Kan-sas City Power & Light Co. of its rec-ord department, and with the closingof the Standke's music store, Paul'sstore becomes one of the few downtownrecord shops selling Victor, Brunswickand Columbia records. The Standkestore has sold its lease at Twelfth andMain to Martha Washington CandiesCo.

Since the opening the record busi-

ness for this firm has been "wonder-ful," according to Mary McMurray.New customers have been attracted,and old customers who have not beenin for some time have dropped in andmade purchases. Rudy Vallee's "SteinSong" on the Victor, and the Victor"Should I" by Arden and Ohman areboth very popular.

Other records that are coming in fortheir share of populartiy are "Sweet-heart Trail," by Slats Randall, whonow is at the Muehlebach grill andwho, on the day of the opening, camein and autographed his own records.Brunswick's "Beside an Open Fire-place," by Jack Denny and his orches-tra, is also active.

The two most popular Columbia num-bers are "Sunny Side of the Street"by Ted Lewis, and "Cinderella Brown"and "Sing You Sinner," by the Charles-ton Chasers. -KENNETH FORCE.

Janu-ary and February business in Detroitwas exceptionally good and fine returnshave been received by Cleveland deal-ers through the sale of Amos 'n' Andyand other celebrity records, where aspecial campaign has been put on.

Announcement is made by Grigsby-Grunow Co. that J. L. Overlock hasbeen elected vice-president and treas-urer of the company. He was form-erly treasurer and assistant to thepresident of the Studebaker Corp. atSouth Bend, Ind. He is a certified pub-lic accountant and was formerly comp-troller of he Armour Grain Co.

C. J. Callies, advertising manager forthe Nathaniel Baldwin Co., here, saysthat plans for the company's merchan-dising program are practically com-plete and will be ready for announce-ment in about ten days. The first dis-tributor signed up for Baldwin radioswas the Ackerman Electric Co., ofGrand Rapids, Mich., and while in Buf-falo on Monday of this week Arch R.Strong, assistant general sales mana-ger, in company with A. The Zenith Radio Corp. is rapidlysigning up now distributors for its lineof sets. Quinn Alexander, west coastrepresentative, with headquarters inSan Francisco, who has been travelingover his territory and testing out thenew chassis, reports dealers havinggiven the new set a wonderful recep-tion. He visited the factory here thisweek for a few days.

Roy A. Whipple, president of Wakem& Whipple, Inc., spent a day or so lastweek at the Apex factory at Marion,Ind., driving down there particularly tosee how the new Apex auto radio ismade and incidentally to have one in-stalled in his car and try it out on theway home. Mr. Whipple and his or-ganization are sold on these auto radiosand so far have received fine responsefrom dealers who have seen them andtested them out for themselves.

Through the continued activities ofthe mayor's radio commission of which ;Charles Himmel, vice-president of Hud-son - Ross, Inc., Crosley and Amrad dis-tributor here, is chairman, the Chicagopolice department will soon have inoperation a broadcasting station wheremessages on a low wave length may besent out to auto squads to aid in appre-hending criminals. The broadcastingapparatus has been under constructionfor some months at the Warren avenue

Mr. Wiebe told of the new develop-ments for this year in Atwater Kentradio and further improvements for thescreen circuit.

"Greater sales are expected duringthe remainder of the year by the At-water Kent organization," Mr. Wiebesaid, "than ever before in a correspond-ing period of time. The superiority ofscreen grid radio has been proven bythe fact that the principal is employedby 90 per cent. of all manufacturers,"he said.

Activity here in the music and radiofield seems definitely to be on the "upand up" these days, although admitted-ly still spotty in one or two particularlines. Retail business gives promise ofa rather successful Spring.

The monthly meeting of the musicand radio trades this week was incharge of the retail division, and somefour hundred turned out for a programwhich also included a sales talk anda demonstration of what the interfer-ence committee is undertaking.

A combination electric clock and mid-get radio is planned by H. H. Hayden,1110 W. Jefferson street. He calls itthe "Radiochron" and the first samplewas on display this week. The clockis in front of the set with the speakerinserted directly in back.

Herbert H. Horn has taken on a newmantle model set, made by Jackson -Bell, and known as the "Tiffany."

This week announcement comes thatMaster Radio Mfg. Co., Inc., 1682 WestThirty-fifth place, will soon go intoproduction on its new mantle model, asix tube set, of light but substantialtype of cathedral design.

Examinations for radio service menhave been given to 264 men in thepast year by the Radio and MusicTrades Association of Southern Cali-fornia, according to Secretary A. G.Farquharson.

A. U. Magnon, president of the Echo -phone Manufacturing Co., announcesthat the factory will be increased im-mediately with an addition. The 50per cent, additional space will be usedfor test laboratories. It is located atRomaine and Formosa, where the man-tle models have been in production formany months.

The newest clock, or miniature model,to be .manufactured here is the "An-gelus" which plans to go into produc-tion this week at Gilfillan's plant, withoffices at another address, 2044 Veniceboulevard. It will be known as Davi-son and Hayes Co. Bob Hayes, of thecompany, has been in the radio busi-ness for many years and formerly putout the Angelus as a table model set.His most recent affiliation, before theforming of the present company, wasas sales manager for makers of theClarion, while Frank D. Davison wasmanager at the Master factory.

The distributorship of Zenith radioin Rochester and the west central por-tion of New York state has been takenover by the Chapin -Owen Co., Inc.,this city. W. C. Heaton, sales promo-tion manager for the Zenith RadioCorp., Chicago, disclosed the appoint-ment of the local firm today.

The Chapin -Owen Co. has its head-quarters at 205-213 St. Paul street,and is also a distributor of automobilesupplies and sporting goods. CharlesS. Owen is president and manager ofthe company; B. S. Arnold, vice-presi-dent, and H. Weisberg, treasurer.

It seems to be the rapidly increas-ing belief of many radio dealers thatconcentration on one line of radiomeans more profits at the end of theyear. J. H. Crosby, of Abbott & Son,Marshalltown, La., a store that hassuccessfully followed this policy, re-cently had some pertinent comments tomake on their experience in handlingone make of radio exclusively.

"In the merchandising of radio,"said Mr. Crosby, "we find it a greatdeal more profitable to concentrate ourefforts on one make of radio ratherthan several lines or even one othermake. We have tried on two or threeoccasions to market several makes ofradio at the same time, but with littlesuccess. The result is that we confineour entire radio activity to one line-Atwater Kent-because that is the oneline which we and our entire salesforce are sold on 100 per cent."

"Frequently we have had opportuni-ties offered us by radio manufacturersto sell their receivers on very attrac-tive terms and thereby make a largerprofit. We have in the past acceptedone or two such propositions and thenet result has been much grief. Afterour first profits we found that the ser-

vicing costs gradually absorbed laterprofits, and if we lingered with the linelong enough, our original profits -pluswere gone."

Abbott & Son have been in the hard-ware business in Marshalltown, since1860, and in their present location since1928. Their store is regarded as oneof the best hardware establishments inthe country, and they carry a com-plete line of nationally advertised hard-ware, sporting goods, dinnerware, elec-tric washing machines, electric refri-gerators and radio.

Mr. Crosby believes that a very per-tinent subject for radio dealers to con-sider today is the problem of old sets."We find that in eight out of ten salesmade," he said, "there is an old setwhich must enter into the transaction,much the same as in the automobilebusiness-and this is becoming increas-ingly so. There does not seem to beany fixed rule to follow in this as eachtransaction brings up different angles.However, the price of new set, thecompetition and the model of the oldset are factors that must always beconsidered. In many cases we havefound that a customer will claim thathis or her old set works satisfactorily,but when we demonstrate a new Atwa-ter Kent radio right alongside of it,their opinion changes. The result isanother trade-in.

Radio dealers and distributors in thisterritory are experiencing an increasein the demand for sets, and indicationsare that April will be a fairly goodmonth. Many of the leading merchantshave been featuring attractive windowtrims this week which should do muchto stimulate sales. Easter is expectedto bring about an increase in the saleof sets.

Lawrence Tibbett's recordings ofselections from "The Rogue Son," nowappearing at the Alhambra Theatre,are enjoying an unusually large de-mand, according to the North CentralDistributors, Victor wholesalers in thisterritory.

Victor dealers in and about Milwau-kee report that Rudy Vallee's "SteinSong" is proving to be a popular ree-

ording, and that the sale of this dischas been very good during the past twoweeks.

Clarence Sievert, formerly with theInterstate Sales Co., has been appoint-ed advertising and sales manager of theLappin Electric Co., Philco wholesaledistributors. Charles Howell, H. P.Nicaulin and M. G. West have beenadded to the sales force. Mr. Howellhas been assigned to southeastern Wis-consin, Mr. Nicaulin to southwesternWisconsin, and Mr. West to the north-ern and central portion of the state.

National Convention Management hasbeen formed in this city by T. WayneMacDowell, former convention mana-ger of the Atwater Kent Mfg. Co.Associated with him as vice-presidentis Allen McQuhae, the former concerttenor.

Working along advertising agencylines, the company, according to Mr.MacDowell, offers a complete conven-tion service to industrial concerns andtrade organizations.

"Few executives would think of hand-ling their own advertising in view ofthe infinitely superior advantages of-fered by the agency at little or noadditional cost," says Mr. MacDowell."So it should be with conventions-and especially so in view of their grow-ing importance in the set-up of moderndistribution. As experts in this line,we have designed a plan to fit thesegatherings to a definite purpose and tomake them more pleasant and profit-able to all concerned. All too frequent-ly, conventions, dealer meetings andsales meetings fail because they areallowed to drift aimlessly along or relyfor their success on last-minute prepa-rations by an executive staff whichalready has plenty to do in the regularcourse of its work. Like modern advertising, modern conventions cost moneyand it is our aim to make them produceresults commensurate with the expendi-ture."

Although he has deserted the concertstage in favor of National ConventionManagement, Mr. McQuhae plans tocontinue occasional radio concerts overa national network. He is in chargeof sales and contact, while all work ofconventional management will be han-dled by Mr. MacDowell.

A number of radio concerns, whoseconventions will be held during 1930-31, have already retained the servicesof this new company to handle everyphase of their convention activity, bothbusiness and social.

Northeastern Ohio Majestic Retailers Planning to Attend AtlanticCity Convention-Ohio Music Merchants and Radio Associationin Mid -Year Meeting.

Cleveland, Ohio, Monday.

Encouraging reports of building acti-vity that will tend to still further im-prove the unemployment situation weremade this week. Included were a newplant for the American Steel & WireCo. to cost two and a half million dol-lars, another plant to cost $50,000. Thowarm weather is also allowing variousprojects to be started which will putmany additional men to work. Those inattendance at the weekly gatherings pfthe Ohio Radio Trade Association feelthat there is improvement in conditionsbeing shown right along and they arevery optimistic.

Those concerns having sets suitablefor automobile installation have beengetting a number of inquiries and anti-cipate a large number of sales as soonas the touring season opens. Dealersare beginning to display portable pho-nographs and are featuring records inconnection with them.

The opening of school playgroundsthroughout the city this week is ex-pected to stimulate the demand forharmonicas, and dealers are startingto feature them in window and counterdisplays. Small goods and sheet musichave been moving fairly well.

Majestic dealers of northeastern Ohioare planning on attending the conven-tion at Atlantic City andhave a special train. There is a greatdeal of enthusiasm over the event andarrangements are being completed byofficials of the local distributors, theCleveland Majestic Distributing Corp.,Forty-eighth and Prospect avenue. TheMajestic advertising campaign whichhas been running for a considerabletime is helping stimulate sales.

The Canton Hardware Co., Brunswickdistributor, has completed the decora-tion of its showrooms on Prospect ave-nue which present a very attractiveappearance. A complete line of allmodels is shown and the service de-partment is equipped to give promptattention to all calls. The full line ofBrunswick records is also carried.

The Bailey Co., a unit of NationalDepartment stores, opened its secondbranch this week at the corner of De-troit avenue and Warren road. Theopening on Thursday was attended bya large crowd. A complete line ofnationally known radios is carried.

At the mid -year meeting of the OhioMusic Merchants and Radio Associa-tion held at Columbus a suggestion wasmade that the name of the organiza-tion be changed back to its original one,the Ohio Music Merchants Association.The matter was held over until theannual meeting of the trade body inCincinnati in September and which willbe of two days' duration instead ofthree.

The legislative committee reportedon the recent decision of the attorneygeneral authorizing the school boardsof the state to purchase band and or-chestra instruments for pupils wheninstrumental courses are on the cur-riculum. Anthony L. Maresh, treasurer,and Rexford C. Hyre, secretary, both ofCleveland, attended the meeting atwhich there was a good representationfrom all parts of the state. Otto B.Heaton, of Columbus, president, was inthe chair.

An involuntary petition in bankrupt-cy has been filed in United States Dis-trict Court against Norbert S. Steger,doing business as Steger's Radio Shop,5504 Lorain avenue, Cleveland, by theAitken Radio Corp., Brunswick-Balke-Collender Co., and N. A. Fegen Co.

An exceptionally attractive windowis being shown by the Lyon & HealyCo., for Easter. A pipe organ is in thecenter with accompanying candlebra,and records and sheet music appropri-ate for the occasion are shown in con-nection with it.

The third weekly meeting sponsoredby the Ohio Radio Trades Associationwas held last Wednesday evening at 8P. M. in the auditorium of the Cleve-land News on Superior avenue. Therewas an extra good attendance as theweather was everything that could bedesired. The speakers were Roy A.Forbes, manager of instrument salesfor the Victor division of Radio -Victor,and R. D. Hickok, president of theHickok Electrical Instrument Co.

Distributors and their salesmen werepresent and the majority of the audi-ence were dealers. The interest showndemonstrated conclusively that thetrade feel these gatherings are wellworth their time to attend as the speak-ers in each instance are leaders in theirrespective fields and have something tosay that is very interesting and instruc-tive. Following the business sessionthere was some fine entertainment.Another meeting is scheduled for thiscoming Wednesday evening and a goodturnout is confidently expected.

The first synchronization of radioand moving pictures in the Clevelandpublic schools was tried out success-fully on Wednesday, April 9th. CarvethWells gave a lecture on Africa fromthe platform of John Hay High Schoolanti the photos were flashed on thescreen at three other schools simul-taneously while the lecture was pickedup by station WHK and broadcast tothese schools. As a result of the ex-periment, it will be possible to bringwell known lecturers here which wouldhave been impossible otherwise owningto the cost. 10,000 children were in theaudience of the four schools. TheCleveland Board of Education has underconsideration a broadcasting station tobe erected on the new school boardbuilding soon to be built, and whichviii be used exclusively for educational

SAN DIEGO, CALIF., Friday.

Things are beginning to look prettygood in radio again, around this partof the country. Several bits of moreor less bad news have broken in thepast two weeks or so, and neverthelessthe general attitude of the trade ap-pears to be that the industry, bothnationally anti locally, is making defi-nite progress toward stabilization. Theeliminations which many believed to beoverdue have at last put in their ap-pearance, two store groups in the Uni-versity and Normal Heights districtshaving followed one in a downtownlocation, and a prominent Los Angelesfurniture house is closing out its SanDiego branch, which was selling someradio.

Checking up on the eliminationswhich have occurred, to find out whatprinciple of successful merchandisinghad been violated, general trade opin-ion gives considerable prominence toevidence available pointing to hightrade allowances given to swing deals,and subsequent slow movement of oldset inventories.

Wholesalers having outlets in thesouthern counties are still proceedingwith caution in credit matters, as itis generally felt that there are stillmore radio retailers operating than arenecessary to serve the population, andfurther requirements are more thanpossible before the close of this year.

Right here may be as good a placeas any to call attention to the factthat anyone reviewing the news sentin from San Diego during the past fewweeks, by the "Trade's Only Weekly"traveling correspondent, who hail neverworked in this territory before, willobserve that the concerns which havenow gone out of business were notwritten up in these columns. The"Trade's Only Weekly" goes on yearafter year with an admirable recordof avoiding the common journalisticerror of giving florid write-ups to con-cerns putting up a big front while se-cretly trembling on the ragged edge.But that is only one reason why thetrade reads this publication with con-fidence in its news and editorials.

Thearle Music Co. has handled theopening of business on RCA Theremin,the new musical instrument for whichit is exclusive retailer in this city, inan expert manner, creating immediateand widespread public interest.

Theremin was introduced here by G.Dunbar Shewill, Theremin soloist withRudy Vallee's orchestra. His father,manager of this new department inthe Victor organization, who has beenvisiting friends at Hotel Coronado, as-sisted in making the opening here anotable event.

Orion E. Nobles, advertising mana-ger, Thearle Music Co., analyzing fu -

tune market possibilities for Theremin,mentions that practically no service isrequired, it justifies claims of being theeasiest of musical instruments to learnto play, delivers pleasing tone effects,and is expected to fill a need of middleaged persons of leisure who feel re-gretful that they did not learn to playsome instrument when they were young.

Executives at the Thearle Music Co.feel that portable phonograph business,with hard work, can be made to showeven better sales than last year. Goodmerchandise, with possibly some nationwide special campaign for Summerbusiness, should keep portable sales upto a good volume, as the field is stillwide open, unhampered by any pros-pective competition from portable radio.

James Urquhart notes a favorabletendency in public response to theirefforts to move sets above the lowerprice levels. Salesmen working on com-mission can not make anything sellingcheap stuff. Their campaign on Edisonis producing best results on model R-5,at $199.50.

Fox California Theatre has been ex-hibiting in the lobby a special silverfinish cabinet Philco from the JamesUrquhart store, and photos of the starwere distributed at a special Philcomatinee, bearing the Philco and JamesUrquhart imprint, an effective, typi-cal Philco tie-up with Dennis King's"Vagabond King" picture.

Mr. Urquhart is enthusiastic over thePhilco 95 set, nine tube screen grid,with automatic volume control. Tune inDenver to pick up the popular Amos'n' Andy dialogues, and automatic vol-ume control brings it in smooth andsteady. Fading is eliminated, and for-eign noise is checked so that music isstill heard well enough to be enjoyable.Interchangeability of Philco sets in allcabinet styles gives a merchant supe-rior control of his stocks and facilitatessales.

Southern California Music Co. ismaking a seasonable effort on Victorportables anti records, with a specialwindow display. Miss Bertha Rod-riguez, manager of the record depart-ment, calls attention to the fine in-terior finish of the special portableshown, and its beautiful covering oflizard skin. The Mexican people resi-dents here, many of whom are steadilyemployed anti becoming prosperous, arenow going in for portables. Currentrecord sales give prominence to Vic-tor's "Have a Little Faith in Me," andin the Columbia line Paul Whitenlan's"Nobody's Sweetheart."

Southern California Music Co., SanDiego branch, is at present closing outits containing stock of Brunswick rec-ords, to concentrate on Victor andColumbia.

W. A. Mayne, radio department man-ager of Motor Hardware & EquipmentCo., wholesale distributors of Gilfillanradio, reports that the new model lOGwill be in stock about April 15. Thisis a de luxe cabinet with large dynamicspeaker. The trade is appreciative ofthe new model 105, already movinghere, for its "10 kilocycle selectivity,"and radically different screen grid cir-cuit. The manufacturer has clone awaywith audio transformers, and amplifi-cation gain is now 30 as against aformer 12.

R. L. Tanlplin, proprietor, the Colum-bia Store, reports that he has madearrangements to continue at this loca-tion, recently reported for lease. Hisline is Columbia, Apex and Sonora. Hehas been at 733 Broadway for nineyears.

The trade continues to clear up oldgoods pending the arrival of the newertypes that will be available after theJune convention. Distributors have beenviewing privately these newer modelsand are convinced that set business willbe stimulated as soon as the sets areshown to the public.

Raymond Rosen & Co. will removenext month to larger quarters at 117North Seventh street. Raymond Rosen,head of the firm, will leave on Mondayfor Chicago to visit the headquartersof the Brunswick company, returningvia Dubuque, Iowa, and Muskegon,Mich., where he will visit other branchfactories of the Brunswick-Balke-Col-lender Co.

The new motor boat and automobile.radio sets made by the Crosley RadioCorp., of Cincinnati, Ohio, will be de-livered to the trade next week throughthe distributors, R. E. Tongue & Bros.Co., Inc., Allegheny avenue and Amberstreet. The new sets are the Roamioand Model 21, which are now used asstandard equipment on electric motorboats of the nation. A report from theCrosley corporation this week informedthe local house that the Chris-Craft$35,000 type electric motor boats areto be had with the Crosley set as stand-ard equipment. By May 1 the Tonguecompany will have on hand the newCrosley refrigerator.

With the innovations on the U. S. S."Pennsylvania," flagship of the Atlan-tic Fleet, now being made at a cost of$10,000,000 at the Philadelphia NavyYard, there will be installed for thefirst time in any of the U. S. Navyships, complete radio equipment, andthe set selected for that purpose is theMajestic. The receiver is quipped with9 additional speakers in the crew andofficers' quarters. Presentation of theapparatus was made by L. E. Hilduser,Philadelphia representative of Grigsby-Grunow Co., and Paul Richardson, salespromotion manager of Peirce Phelps,Inc., merged with Penn PhonographCo., local distributors, 437 No. Fifthstreet.

Following the unusually favorablereception which has been given to theNorge refrigerators by the local in-dustry and the introduction of theseto the trade by the wholesalers, Trill-ing & Montague, Seventh and Archstreets, a journey was made to the fac-tory of the Norge Corp., Division ofthe Borg Warner Corp., in Detroit, byHarry Montague and Sales ManagerJacob Lobel of the local wholesale firm.The trip was undertaken to speed upshipments on this product.

The Story & Clark Radio Corp., asubsidiary of the Story & Clark PianoCo., has been licensed by the RadioCorp. of America and affiliated com-panies to manufacture and sell radiosets. The Story & Clark organizationrecently purchased the patents, andthe rights to engineering developmentand designs of the Walbert Mfg. Co.,Chicago. The firm will devote a com-plete unit of its Grand Haven, Mich.,plant to the manufacture of radio sets.The general offices and display rooms,together with the central radio labora-tories of the corporation, are estab-lished in the Story & Clark buildingat 173 North Michigan avenue, thiscity.

Atwater Kent Dealers in East -Bay District Report Satisfac-tory Volume - Harry L. KielKilled in Auto Mishap.

San Francisco, Cal., Thursday.

There appears to be growing dis-satisfaction and speculation among aconsiderable group of the retail tradein the Bay Region. Business with quitea few has dropped materially belowexpectation; and the lowering of pricesand the dumping of sacrifice stockshave sent quite a few of the weakerdealers to the wall. An instance is thatof a dealer who received notice thata line he had stocked heavily was tobe slashed. He tore up the letter, tookdown the receiver and notified the dis-tributors to come and get the goods.Admonished that he would have tokeep the goods and pay for them, hetold them he was through, to do asthey pleased. He pulled out the plugs,darkened the windows, took clown thesigns, and locked the door, and has notyet returned to pay for the goods. Gen-erally, however, the dealer makes a lastdesperate stand, unloads everything hecan at whatever he can get; quits aftermussing up prospects considerably forthose who remain.

The retail trade are generally buy-ing with caution and the considerablebusiness that some of the distributorsare doing is clearly the result of actualclearing of the floors of the retail deal-ers. And the caution is intensified bythe rumors of still more dumping tofollow. If these rumors are launchedby competitors, it is mighty poor busi-ness, for they are naturally carried onto the public, which in turn becomesskeptical of buying any radio of what-ever make. The natural reaction is,"wait a while."

Some of the radio trade, however,appear to prosper the more as competi-tor after competitor quits the field.Such is the Art Music Store in Berke-ley. April sales are running veryactive. While March was light, Febru-ary, a light month for most dealers,averaged more than a radio sale perday. Radio is but a part of their busi-ness, however. Band and stringed in-struments and small goods account fora considerable volume of sales. Recordsand sheet music account for anothervolume. As Art Brown, the proprietoris a musician himself, they are popularwith the musical crowd; and both heand his wife seem to catch the spiritof the college group so thoroughly thatthey meet on sympathetic terms. Somusic teachers in and out of the publicschools have formed the habit of let-ting them know what they are going towant for their classes so that theymay have it on hand for the pupils."And the best of it all," says Mrs.Brown, "is that collections are comingin exceptionally good, indicating thatat least their group of customers arefinding time a little easier. This is notso surprising, when one learns that theyare very particular to whom they sell;it explains itself. Mr. Brown expressesthe opinion that a small but safe busi-

ness with good margins of profit, andno investment that will not permit aready turnover is more desirable thanthe too eager chase after volume atthe expense of safety and profit.

Another department that has metwith considerable success during themonth past is the basement depart-ment of the H. C. Capewell Co. Thiswas a new departure when Edgar Jes-sen took charge of it just a month ago.But Jessen believed in it, he is an opti-mist, and the location gave him accessto a much larger crowd than on thetop floors. He does the rest. So whilehe found his stock crowded into a rathersmall space, with no great chance fordisplay effect, he tuned in on a finebunch of sales for the month, and allby his lonesome.

The East -Bay trade of the AtwaterKent is reporting very satisfactoryvolume. Practically all their dealersare doing some business, and thatmeans nearly all are re -ordering. Thesalesmen have taken pains to see thatthe dealers understood the fine finishin the mechanism of the Atwater Kentand the real value they are offeringfor their money. They seem to realizethe principle that if once the salesmanis sold he will sell the set. Anotherelement of friendly feeling amongdealers is the fact of the generoustreatment they received when the re-cent reduction in price was made byAtwater Kent.

At a meeting of the Board on March24th, Morley Thompson, head of theBaldwin Piano Co. interests was addedas a San Francisco director of theWestern Music and Radio Trades Asso-ciation. The various entertainmentevents of the coming convention havebeen taken under the wing of someone of the local trade organizations.Never has the local trade acted sounanimously, each eager to do his partand more. The Atwater Kent willfurnish the musical, song and dancereview at the good-bye banquet on thenight of the 26th. The Baldwin PianoCo. has taken charge of the theatreparty and social function for the ladieson Thursday, the 26th, under super-vision of T. M. Monson. The Bruns-wick company is furnishing the record-ing artist, Jean Stafford and orchestrafor the welcoming night. E. T. Cun-ningham, Inc., is furnishing the centerpieces, novelties and table decorationfor the welcoming night banquet. TheII. R. Curtis Co., Sparton distirbutor, isfurnishing the flowers and brochuresfor the good-bye night banquet.

The Eveready Tube Troubadours ofthe National Carbon Co. will furnishentertainment for the opening luncheonon Wednesday, the 25th. The NationalBroadcasting Co. will furnish the HillBilly Boys at the farewell luncheon onThursday, the 26th. The RCA willfurnish a musical and dance divertise-went for the good-bye night, Thursday,the 2tith. Sherman, Clay & Co. willconduct a sight-seeing trip and eatsfor the ladies the afternoon of the 25th.The Victor company will furnish themusical specialties and novelties at thewelcoming banquet on Wednesday, the25th. It looks now as if there wouldbe something doing every minute antihardly minutes enough to go around.

Harry L. Kiel, radio salesman ofSan Francisco, was killed last Sundaynight in an auto accident. He had leftfor Turlock on business for his firm,and was not heard of for two days. Atlast he was found by one of the statehighway patrol together with OrvalDillwood who was riding with him,crushed to death under his heavy auto-mobile. Kiel had failed to negotiatea curve in the steep Pacheco Pass,twenty miles east of Gilroy and hadplunged to the bottom of the canyon150 feet below, where thick brushwoodalmost concealed the car. -ALLEN.

February Radio ExportsAggregate $1,433,465

WASHINGTON, D. C., Thursday.

With radio apparatus leading theway, electrical equipment exports fromthe United States during Februaryreached a total of 11,275,457, an in-crease of $726,533 over the same monthlast year, according to the ElectricalDivision, Department of Commerce.

Foreign shipments of radio appa-ratus for the month of February to-taled $1,433,465, which is an increaseof $313,137, receiving sets showing thelargest individual gain, amounting to$201,208. Canada, Mexico and Italywere the three most important marketsfor receiving sets exports to these coun-tries, being worth $163,904, $111,969and $108,160, respectively. Argentinawas next with purchases amounting to$96,990 and exports to New Zealandamounted to $47,310. Transmitting setsand parts valued at $34,734 were ship-ped to Brazil and Siam purchased $20,-207 worth of such apparatus.

Italy was also an important marketfor radio tubes, taking $42,868 worthduring February as well as $10,545

COMPENSATION FORSALESMEN STUDIED BYCOMMERCE DEPARTMENT

WASHINGTON, D. C., Friday.

Out of thirty-two firms reporting tothe Electrical Division of the Depart-ment of Commerce on their basis forcompensation of both inside and out-side salesmen in 1928, nine reported astraight salary basis for inside sales-men and two for outside salesmen. Acombined salary and commission basiswas reported by ten films for insidesalesmen and by four for outside sales-men. While more firms reported astraight commission basis than eithersalary or combined salary and commis-sion, for either type of salesman, it willbe noted that the discrepancy in favorof a straight commission was consider-ably larger for outside salesmen thanfor inside.

Chicago, Ill., Friday.The Brunswick-Balke-Collender Co.,

this city, reported for 1929 a net lossof $2,948,272 after depreciation, deple-tion, interest and other charges. Thiscontrasts with a net profit of $3,235,-375 reported for the preceding fiscalyear.

Sales for 1929 amounted to $29,417,-799, or a decrease of $79,812 from 1928.Current assets of the company are $27,-382,184 and current liabilities, $11,988,-628.

Stewart -Warner Corp. Uses `Straight Line' Atwater Kent FinishesSystem in Manufacture of Radio Products Construction of Giant

Chicago, Ill., Thursday.

Although no actual similiarty existsbetween the modern motor car and apresent - day radio, manufacturingmethods of the two industries presenta striking parallel, in the opinion of W.J. Zucker, vice-president and generalhalos manager of the Stewart -WarnerCorp., this city.

"In the early days of radio, no stan-dard production methods had been de-veloped suitable for mass production ofsets," said Mr. Zucker. "Each produceroperated under such a system as wasefficient to meet the demands of thethen limited market for radios-withthe result that there were almost asmany different production systems inuse at that time as there were manu-facturers in the field., Later, how-ever, the rapid improvement and in-crease in broadcasting f a c i l i t i e sthroughout the country brought a cor-responding increase in the public de-mand for sets. And with this risingdemand came the vital need for bettermethods of volume production."

According to Mr. Zucker, it was thiscondition that first caused radio execu-tives to consider the possibility ofadapting the mass production methods

of the big automobile plants to the con-struction of radios.

"The production system we use tobuilt Stewart -Warner radios today,"continued Mr. Zucker, "closely corre-sponds to that employed in modernautomobile factories. Under this system, it is rarefor anyone of the many sets producedin a day to travel the full length óf theline without discovery of any imperfec-tions that may have developed. Buteven though such a defect did escapediscovery by the inspectors, the finaltesting instruments located at the ex-treme end of the line will unfailinglybring it to light."

7 -Story Power PlantPhiladelphia, Pa., Friday.

The Atwater Kent Mfg. Co., thiscity, has just added another importantunit to its thirty-two acre radio plant.This is a new and up-to-date powerplant with boilers running seven.stories high, necessitated by the en-largement last year which doubled thefloor space of what was already oneof the largest radio factories in theworld.

The new plant, of brick, steel andconcrete construction, completes thestage of expansion undertaken whenthe floor space of the factory wasdoubled. Designed primarily as asteam heating unit, arrangements wereincluded whereby a considerable por-tion of the electric current required forfactory purposes will be generated onthe premises. The plant will alsosupply steam for the moulding depart-ment.

The object of the builder has beento produce a thoroughly modern plant.Its apparatus represents the last wordin scientific equipment, some of the in-stallations being the first of their kindto be utilized in the Quaker City.

The basic equipment of the plantconsists of three 750 horse -powerboilers equipped with water -walls andair pre -heaters, each capable of gener-ating steam at 200 pounds pressureand 200 degrees superheat. The aver-age appetite of each boiler is between7 and 8 carloads of coal per week. Thebuilding itself corresponds to a seven -story structure and that represents alsothe height of the boilers. Each of theseboilers is operated from a central con-trol board, two boilers serving maxi-mum demands with a third always inreserve.

A 750 kilowatt turbine generator,which acts as a reducing valve for theheating steam and at the same timefurnishes, at minimum cost, a consider-able part of the electric current re-quired in the radio plant, is a uniqueand interesting piece of apparatus. Anunusual feature of the control equip-ment is that it is tied in with the oper-ations of the utility company whichfurnishes the factory with the remain-der of its current.

Pulverized coal is used for fuel. Thecoal, having undergone a preliminarycrushing process, is raised on con-veyers to a huge steel bunker underthe roof, with a capacity of more than500 tons. It is then fed by gravitythrough automatic weighing scales tounit pulverizers which reduce the coalto the consistency of flour. The pow-dered coal is combined with the properamount of air and blown into thefurnaces so that it burns like gas or oil.

Alex Martin Stinson, 61, a pioneerin the piano industry and formerlyaffiliated with several Indianapolisfirms, died recently at his home in OakPark, Ill., after a long illness. Thewidow and three children survive.

Majestic radio dealers of the Indian-apolis territory left Indianapolis, April8, on a special train to attend the salesschool conducted in Chicago by Grigs-by-Grunow Co., Majestic radio manu-facturers. More than 100 dealers werein the Indianapolis group, along withretail salesman. R. P. Oblinger, presi-dent of the Capitol Electric Co., is theIndianapolis distributor.

Announcement is made of the organi-zation of the retail radio dealers' divi-sion of the Electric League of Indian-apolis. This organization has beenformed for the purpose of combatingcertain detrimental practices found inthe industry and in hopes of protectingboth dealer and public from such prac-tices. Membership is open to respon-sible radio dealers of the city. Themembership committee makes a thor-ough investigation, however, before ad-mitting any dealer into the organiza-tion. A series of luncheons has been onthe program. These discussions willembrace merchandising and advertis-ing improvements. A set of rules foreach dealer to use in the sale of par-ticular sets will be formulated. In thisway it is hoped to eliminate undesirablecompetition, questionable advertisingand selling of obsolete sets. Consistentservice and guarantees is one of thegoals. Headquarters are in the officesof the Electric League of Indianapolis,Chamber of Commerce building. Offi-cers chosen are C. H. Domhoff, direc-tor of sales of the Guarantee Tire &Rubber Co., president; J. B. McCoy, ofthe Smith - Hassler - Sturm Co., vice-president; Ray G.
