Initially growing cabbage, asparagus and other fruits and
vegetables, J.V. Bailey enhanced the poor rocky soil of his land
and built a prosperous business by selling his crops at the St. Paul
City Market. In 1905, J.V. Bailey Nursery was officially established
at the Bailey homestead. Throughout the decades, the Bailey
family’s business continued to grow steadily and on January 3,
1967, J.V. Bailey Nursery was purchased by Gordon Bailey Sr.
With Gordon’s purchase and the third generation fully involved in
day-to-day operations, the company was incorporated as Bailey
Nurseries, Inc. and continued operations on over 600 acres.
The recent decades have brought continued growth to Bailey
Nurseries, with present-day growing operations in Minnesota,
Oregon, Washington and Illinois on over 5,000 acres.
Bailey Nurseries is a fifth-generation, family-owned business headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota. After arriving
by paddleboat in Red Rock, Minnesota in 1850, John Bailey Jr. and his family settled near the current site of Bailey
Nurseries. Almost 50 years later, his grandson John Vincent (J.V.) Bailey owned 80 acres of land overlooking the
Mississippi River, land that still houses the Bailey Nurseries headquarters today.
Remaining loyal to its roots, the company is headquartered on
the family’s original homestead overlooking the Mississippi River
Valley, with the main office an expansion of J.V. Bailey’s original
family home built in 1902. Now with the fifth generation joining
the family business, Bailey Nurseries is one of the country’s largest
wholesale nurseries and continues to develop and introduce
revolutionary shrub, tree and rose varieties. With an industry-
leading family of employees, Bailey Nurseries is proud to employ
some of the hardest working and leading innovators in the
horticulture industry. Regardless of the company’s size, the Bailey
family maintains a consistent focus on maintaining its values of
quality, service and growth for the future.

• July 1911: J.V. Bailey made history by being the first person to drive an automobile to the St. Paul City Market, allowing additional loads of produce and help to be at the market. (1)
• 1946: Carl Johnson, a long-time Bailey employee, developed the first mechanical shade tree digger for the company. Later, shaker bars were added to speed up the digging process.
• 1955: Vincent and Gordon Bailey Sr. introduced a Profit Sharing Plan for permanent employees, a first in the industry.
• 1998: Developed by experts in the Bailey Shop, the DROP-TRAILER was introduced, allowing entire loads of freshly potted plants to be moved to the fields with reduced labor and increased productivity. (2)
• 2004: Bailey Nurseries introduced the Endless Summer® Hydrangea Collection, the world’s first collection of reblooming Hydrangea macrophylla.
As the company developed, so did our way of doing business:
}
Bailey Nurseries has always prided itself on being innovators in the industry and has worked diligently to stay on the forefront of technology to provide high quality product, produced in the most cost-efficient manner possible to maintain high standards. The foundation of the company is built on using creativity, hard work and innovation to make something from nothing. Founder J.V. Bailey took 15 acres of “un-farmable land” and went on to successfully develop what is now known as Bailey Nurseries by creatively amending the soil using various vegetable and fruit crops.

(1)(3)
• 2009: Multiple pruning machines were developed and implemented by the Bailey Shop to mechanize, increase productivity and reduce labor in production fields. These tools not only allow for better field processes, but also decrease the amount of pruning steps for bareroot product and container plants in the coolers. (3)
• 2010: After almost 10 years of design, planning and customization, Bailey Nurseries began using a digging machine in its greenhouse facilities to more safely and efficiently harvest rooted cuttings. This invention greatly increased productivity and decreased labor costs.
• 2011: GreenPower LED lighting tests began in the Nord Farm Propagation Department in an effort to increase success rates for difficult-to-grow varieties and deliver a higher quality of plant with energy-saving and faster propagation. With extremely positive results, LED propagation was expanded in the Minnesota and Oregon facilities.
Harvest Automation robots were introduced to greenhouse and
field production, reducing labor and allowing employees to use
their specialized skills for more difficult tasks.

Developing and introducing new varieties of plants has always been a focus at Bailey Nurseries. We encourage employees to always be on the lookout for new, naturally occurring varieties. Consumers crave the newest and best varieties, and Bailey Nurseries is a great source of innovative material for growers, landscapers and retail garden centers.
Through industry-leading breeding partnerships, internal breeding efforts and new variety discoveries by Bailey employees, we strive to provide tested and hardy varieties with ornamental and practical value. Whether introduced as a Bailey plant or through one of our consumer brands, each species undergoes thorough testing over many years to ensure that it upholds Bailey’s high standards of excellence.
In January 2015, Bailey Nurseries acquired Plant Introductions, Inc. (PII) from founding partners Dr. Michael Dirr, Mark Griffith and Jeff Beasley, establishing an in-house breeding program at Bailey Nurseries. PII has bred many of the best introductions in the Endless Summer® Hydrangeas and First Editions® Plants brands, so after many years of breeding partnership this was a natural extension of our relationship. We are excited for the opportunities that this brings to our customers, allowing us to breed and directly supply cutting-edge genetics and new introductions worldwide. With this expansion of internal breeding, Bailey Nurseries is thrilled to have each of the PII founders remaining on board as consultants, providing direction on industry trends, breeding and plant trials.
Bailey Nurseries is built on a foundation of knowledgeable, dedicated and hard-working employees. With their instrumental contributions, innovative ideas and forward-thinking approach, Bailey is able to produce original, high-quality plants. We take great pride in our employees and they reciprocate with amazing pride in their work. With many employees having been with us for 20 years and longer, we are proud to call our employees across the country a part of the Bailey family. Bailey Nurseries has an internship program at all divisions, which is where many long term employees begin their careers. We have a diverse staff, with employees from over 20 different countries around the world. Bailey employs over 500 people year-round, and an additional 600 on a seasonal basis.

Ivory Halo® DogwoodYear Introduced: 1993 Discovered by: Jeff Maas
While touring a production field of European Variegated Dogwood, Jeff Maas noticed a single plant with a distinctive appearance. After determining its unique attributes – having a finer branching habit, a more compact size and darker red bark than the species – Ivory Halo® Dogwood was introduced and has gone on to become one of the most popular Bailey introductions to date.
OURPLANTINTRODUCTIONSSupporting Bailey employees in discovering new plant varieties is a cornerstone of our mission, and advocating their
role as contributors to the horticulture industry remains an annual focus. Having released over 60 Bailey Nurseries introductions, these 10 varieties provide a diverse sample of developments that our employees have pioneered.

Love & PeaceTM RoseYear introduced: 2002 Dicovered by: Ping Lim
Bred at our Yamhill facility in 1991, Love & Peace™ is an All-American Rose Selections winner from breeders Ping Lim and Jerry Twomey. Bred for consistent and beautiful color on its double blossoms, along with vigorous growth and disease resistance, Love & Peace instantly became a garden staple after its 2002 introduction.
Golden Carousel® BarberryYear Introduced: 1999 Discovered by: Terry Schwartz
Found at Bailey’s West Brown Farm by Terry Schwartz, Golden Carousel® is a natural hybrid of Korean and Golden Japanese barberry. The existing Korean and Golden barberry were raised from seed, and the new
Golden Carousel variety was found among a crop of 2-year plants. This selection has beautiful golden yellow leaves that have striking red and orange fall tones.
Frontyard® LindenYear Introduced: 1995 Discovered by: Gordon Bailey Jr.
Discovered in the late 1970s by Gordon Bailey Jr. near Alexandria, Minnesota, Frontyard® is a native linden tree that was chosen for its excellent symmetrical branching habit. After years of trials, this variety was released in 1995 as a perfect “front yard” tree with its broadly pyramidal shape as a young tree that becomes nicely rounded with age.
Fall Fiesta® Sugar MapleYear Introduced: 1998 Discovered by: Max Lamis
Discovered in a seedling block of Acer saccharum at Bailey Nurseries’ Yamhill facility, this new species of sugar maple was selected and grown to show a more vigorous habit, glossier leaves that provide better heat and wind tolerance, and incredible fall color. After four years of testing in Yamhill, the trees were transplanted to the Minnesota growing facilities and showed consistent results. Fall Fiesta® has gone on to be one of the industry’s leading sugar maples.

OURPLANTINTRODUCTIONS
Tiger Eyes® SumacYear Introduced: 2005 Discovered by: Steve Jorgensen
Steve Jorgensen from Bailey’s Minnesota Inventory Departmentwas at the Bauer Farm in Hastings, Minnesota counting sumac when he saw something different: a bright yellow sumac sticking out from the crowd. “It didn’t look like a mix,” Steve said. “It just looked different!” Because of that, Steve brought the new plant to the Nord Farm for testing. Roughly 5 years later, Tiger Eyes® Sumac was introduced.
Original Endless Summer® HydrangeaYear Introduced: 2004 Discovered by: Vern Black
Bailey Foreman Vern Black had been paying close attention to his neighbor Dennis Bostrom’s hydrangea for three years and noted its similarity in color to other popular macrophylla Hydrangea, but realized that it bloomed well year-after-year in Zone 4. In 1986, Vern took cuttings from the parent plant and planted them for trials at the Danberg Farm in Newport, Minnesota. After 10 years of testing, additional test sites were developed in Athens, Georgia and it was confirmed that this new species of hydrangea was the first remontant, or re-blooming, variety. The plant was named Endless Summer® and the world’s first and best-selling collection of re-blooming hydrangea was born.
Autumn Revolution™ BittersweetYear Introduced: 2013 Discovered by: Rodney Bailey
Discovered as a naturally occurring whole plant mutation by Rodney Bailey in 2002, this new species of Celastrus was tested by Bailey Nurseries for four years before additional propagation began. This new bittersweet variety has “perfect” flowers, meaning that it is self-pollinating, and bears fruit twice the size of its parent plant. Autumn Revolution™ was introduced in 2013 and is a huge improvement over the species.
Macy’s Pride™ RoseYear Introduced: 2003 Discovered by: Ping Lim
Bred at Bailey Nurseries’ Yamhill facility by Ping Lim, Macy’s Pride™ was tested throughout the country for 10 years before its introduction in 2003. Its unique and beautiful creamy white double blossoms accentuated by semi-glossy green foliage were so beautiful, it was chosen by Macy’s to celebrate their 100 year anniversary and was showcased at the world-renowned Macy’s Flower Show in New York City.
Matador™ MapleYear Introduced: 2011 Discovered by: Kevin Johnston
Midwest Production General Manager Kevin Johnston discovered Matador™ Maple at Bailey Nurseries’ Minnesota container tree farm. He noticed that this specific tree showed consistently deeper red fall color than other freemanii cultivars and suggested that it may be a new variety. With incredible color and upright, symmetrical form, as well as its tendency to hold leaves longer than the species, Matador was introduced as a member of the First Editions® brand in 2011.

Bareroot plant material is one of the foundations on which
our reputation is based. Because we hand grade each plant
that is harvested, customers realize that when they buy
from Bailey Nurseries, they are buying the most consistent,
high performance product available in the market. Bareroot
gives growers, re-wholesalers and landscapers a strong and
healthy plant to be grown for future use. The advantages
go beyond the quality of the product too, as bareroot is
also a cost-effective option for growers. (1)
Finished container product is a staple in the industry and at
Bailey Nurseries. Utilizing new technology and extensive
employee knowledge, we are continually working to supply
some of the most hardy, varied, dependable and retail-
ready material on the market. Multiple growing facilities,
combined with our Bud and Bloom program where
we “force” hydrangeas, roses and clematis into bloom
for Mother’s Day mean one thing: Bailey Nurseries is a
one-stop shop for any retailer looking for product that
consumers demand. (2)
JumpStarts™ is a new potted liner program Bailey
Nurseries introduced in 2014 that gives growers another
option to speed up their container production cycle, and
is designed for transplant success. These quart-sized
liners have a custom hexagonal design, which inhibits
root circling and, in turn, accelerates the finishing process.
Having used JumpStarts liners in our own production for
many years, we can say with confidence that they absolutely
boost production success. (3)
Bailey Nurseries offers a diverse mix of over 1,500 plant
varieties available as bareroot, finished container product
and JumpStarts™ liners. This broad assortment of product
provides solutions for a wide range of customers – whether
they are growers producing material for both immediate
and long-term sales, or retailers in need of product that
will turn over quickly. We have over 100 years of growing
expertise, and are proud to deliver consistently high quality
plants year after year.

Illinois, and are positioned perfectly for us to distribute finished container
material throughout the United States and Canada. Having multiple
production facilities also allows us to grow an exceptionally diverse range of
plant material to meet the demand for regional product assortments.
Our seed orchard in Washington is a dedicated facility that serves as a seed
orchard, primarily for our own production.
Finally, we manage all in-house breeding at Plant Introductions, Inc.
- now a part of Bailey Nurseries - just outside of Athens, Georgia.
