May 18, 2017Dear 1D Families,

I hope that all of the mothers had a nice day with their families last Sunday! All students have had a chance to be Star of the Week, and this week, Mrs. English got to be our Star of the Week. The children were very excited to learn more about her. It was great to see so many of you visit for the Night of Reflection last night! The children worked hard on their poetry books, and they were excited to share them with their families.

This week's story was What Can You Do? Our Essential Question was “Why is it important to try your best?” We learned that everyone has talents and can be good at something. Our target skill was author’s purpose, and as we read the text, we discussed the author’s reason for including certain pictures or ideas in the text. We focused on words to know: different, near, enough, stories, high, always, once, and happy. Our grammar focus was on types of sentences, and our spelling focus was on words ending in –er, -est, -le

This week in Math, we talked about how a two-dimensional shape can be composed of several other two-dimensional shapes and that we can find a shape within a shape. Students also worked to take apart two-dimensional shapes by drawing lines to show the shape outlines. We had fun using pattern block puzzles and playing shape memory. Next week, we will learn about fractions!

In Religion, we had our last Christ Communities on Tuesday. We also finished our chapter on God’s creation and wrote a reflection about how we helped to care for God’s creation on our retreat.

Please remember that your child’s time capsule letter is due Monday May 22nd! Please use an envelope no larger than 6x9 manila or a #10 size letter envelope. Also, please do not send in photo albums. Thanks for your help with this special project!
