COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course is part of the core course requirements . The course will provide you

with a thorough understanding of the basic principles of Building Construction.

The course will also involve visits to actual Building Construction Sites where

you can see what is being taught in the class.

The principal objectives of the course are to:

• To give an overview of the Building Process

• To explain the different excavation methods and foundation systems

• How to construct buildings using the 4 major materials, namely concrete ,

wood, masonry and steel.

• The building envelope is examined ,including roofing, glass and cladding

• The interior finishes are considered

COURSE OUTCOME

At the conclusion of the course you should be able to:

•Describe the Building Process

•Decide the types of excavations and foundation systems for different building

types

•Describe the method of construction of buildings using concrete, masonry, wood,

steel or with a combination of these materials.

• Describe various types of interior and exterior finishes

• Design and construct simple buildings

• Describe the Vocabulary of Construction

COURSE COMPONENTS AND REQUIREMENTS

This course will utilize a combination of lectures, class

participation, student presentations, homework, assigned

readings and web based reading

YOUR TASKS

1.Filling in the Information Sheet

You have to fill in the “Student Information Sheet” and hand it

in, in the next class. This is for me to get to know all of you

better

2. Homework Assignments

Homework assignments will be regularly assigned by the

instructor on various topics during the course. Specific

instructions (i.e., due dates, format etc.) will be provided with

the homework assignments. Marks will be deducted for late

submissions.

QUIZ

The course will have two quizzes as per schedule. These tests will

be closed book tests. The type of tests will be discussed in the class.

FINAL EXAMINATION

A comprehensive final examination will be given at the conclusion

of the course.
