They Got It!

Connie Goldberg, Kauko Koistinen, Massimiliano di Franco and

Andrea Manno are this year’s winners of the Teams’ Tournament. They

won rounds 10 and 11, scoring 12.77 and 11.61, only losing the last match.

Their final score was 162.80.

The Norwegian team Joerstad ( Kai Joerstad, Ronnie Joerstad,

Jan Mikkelsen and Sverre

Johnsen) won all of today’s

matches, having scored 19.50,

12.05 and 13.78. They ended up

just 1.24 VPs behind the

American-Finnish-Italian team.

The multi-national

team Park Lane Apartments

(Lee Rosenthal, Marcin Stern,

Eli Arzelazi and Waseem

Naqvi) won all matches today.

They scored 12.05, 19.74 and 16.80 and finished third.

This year’s Madeira International Bridge Open is reaching it’s

end. Next year will be our 20th edition. There will be many changes. Be

sure not to miss them.

North led the four of spades and South won with the king and returned the nine,

North ducking declarer's queen. When the clubs broke declarer was assured of nine tricks.

He cashed a top heart before playing off the clubs and North was under pressure, eventually

discarding a diamond, a heart and a spade. Declarer was now in a position to score a couple

of overtricks - a heart to the king drops North's queen and then the jack of hearts forces a

spade discard when North can be thrown in with a spade to lead into the split diamond

tenace. When declarer took the heart finesse he was held to nine tricks.

In the other room EW stopped in 2NT, scoring +150 and losing 10 IMPs.

the ace, cashed the ace of spades pitching a heart, ruffed a spade, cashed the top hearts,

ruffed a heart with the jack of clubs, ruffed a diamond high and cashed the king of clubs,

claiming all the tricks when the outstanding trumps divided, +940.

In the other room NS reached 6NT.

That looks tricky, but on a diamond lead declarer wins with dummy's ace, comes to

hand with a club, cashes a top heart, goes back to dummy with a club and plays a heart.

When the queen appears declarer wins and cashes the rest of the clubs. West has to keep

his hearts and is thrown in on the fourth round of the suit to lead into the spade tenace -

+990 and 2 somewhat fortuitous IMPs.

who then perseveres with another diamond setting up a trick in that suit.
