TUNK NIGHT

This year we undertook our Sixth AnnualJunk Night and glad to say that theweather once again was very kind to us,as earlier in the day there had been nu-merous very, very heavy showers. The numbers that came via the door thisyear saw a small increase from 1998'sJunk Night where a 151 came through, to154 this year so hopefully the trend willcontinue to stay in the upward direction.I must admit looking around the hall thisyear it did seem a great deal busier than itdid last year, I don't know if it was be-cause people stayed longer or not butwhat ever the case was it was great tosee. I even know that people had trav-elled from as far as Oban to attend whichis a good 3 hours drive from Port Seton. It was great to see that once again Rose& Norrie of Tennamast continued to giveus their support on the evening, unfortu-nately Bill & Betty of Jaycee couldn't bewith us as it was Bills 50ft Birthday but asalways I am most grateful for their dona-tions to our Raftle. An effort to make the first transatlantic QSO on2 meters has come up dry.

The auempt by teams in Newfoundland andScotland to confirm a transatlantic contact on 144MHz and secure the kish Radio Transmitters Soci-ety's Brendan Trophies ended a day early on July 3.The attempts began June 26.

"We operated until Saturday July 3 as the UKteam wanted to get their gear down as bad weatherwas setting in," said Paul Piercey, VOlIlE, theleader of the Newficundland team. "There was noth-ing heard, but a couple reports of others listeningwere received." Piercefs group operated from St

John's, Newfoundland, using the call sign VOIAA.The station was set up in Cabot Tower, where Mar-coni received the first transatlantic sigrral in 1901.

The Scottish group, led by Bill Ward, GMOICF,operated from Ardnamurchan Lighthouse on fud-namurchan Point--the most westerly point in themainland British Isles. The group used the call sign2S0ICF/P.

The IRTS's Brendan Trophies will be awardedto the first two stations to make a verified contactacross the Atlantic Ocean using 144-146 MHzwithout aid of manmade reflectors, repeaters ormoonbounce.

Everyone's Free (To Wear corduroy)

Ladies and Gentlemen of the RAE class of '99Wear corduroy. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, corduroywould be it. The long-term benefits ofcorduroy have beenproved by scientists, whoreas the rest ofmy advice has no ba-sis more reliable than my own meandering experience.

I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and quality of your station.Oh never mind, you will never understand the power and thequality ofyour station until it has packed up.But trust mq in twenty years, you will look back at your logand recall in a way you can't grasp now, how much DX lay be-fore you and how fabulous your station sounded.

The band is not as flat as you imagine.

Don't worry about interference or worry that knowing thatworrying is as effective as tryrng to lower SWR by rubbinglard into your antenna. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that nevercrossed your worried mind, like gales at 4 a.m. on some idleTuesday morning.

Do one thing every day that scares your neighbours.

Call.

Be generous with other peoples' reports; don't put up withpeople who are mean with yours.

Solder.

Dont waste your time on pile ups.Sometimes you're heard, sometimes you're in the noise. The bands are crowded and in the end,it's only another contactRemember the 5 by 9s you receive, forget the 4 by ls.If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.Keep your old QSL cards throw away your old license renew-als.Tune.Don't feel guilty that you don't know what to say on top band. The most interesting people I know don't use top bandsome of the most interesting hams I know don't use IIF at all.

Use low loss coax.

Respect Morse keys. You'll miss then when they're gone.

Maybe you'll work \{K, maybe you won't.Maybe you'll work moon bounce, maybe you won't.Maybe you'll stay QRP, maybe you'll melt your antennasrunning enough power to light a small city

Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much

or berate yourself either.Your contacts are half chance, so are everybody else's.

Enjoy your hobbyUse it every way you can.Don't be afraid of it or what other people think of it.It's the greatest hobby you'll ever have.

Log. Even if it makes boring reading to everybody but your-selflRead the instructions even if they are in Japanese.Do not read electronics magazines, they will only make youlook boring.

Get to know your RIS inspector You never know when you'llneed him on your side.Be nice to your neighbours They are less likely to complainabout your mast and report you to the councilUnderstand that friends come and go,But a iirecious few will lend you their ladders.

Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and languagefor as the older you get, the more you need the few words youlearnt in French class

Be QRV on 23 Cm's once but drop it before it causes braincancerBe QRV on 4 meters once but drop it before it makes youlonely.

Test.

Accept certain inalienable truths: Computers will take over.Radios will get more complicated. you too will get old andwhen you do, youll fanaticise that when you were young, computers had their uses radios were simpleand class B's respected class As.

Respect G2's.

Don't expect aluminium to support your antennasMaybe you'll have a scaffold pole maybe you'll have a latticetower but you'll never know when either of them will collapse

Don't mess around in your radio or by the time you've finishedsomeone else will have to fix it.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with thosewho supply it.Advice is a form of selling.Dispensing it is a way of wishing you to purchase somethingyou don't need.Cleaning it up.Glossing over the scratches and selling it for more than it'sworth.

But trust me on the cordurov.

URGENT, URGENT GHRTSTMIIS ltIEAL

It is that time of year again when my thoughts are looking at what do we want to do for our Christmas Night Out. The datethat I have pencilled in is Saturday 27* November. I have purposely stayed clear of December, as I know that it is the timewhen most people at their work have their own works parties.

Anyway what do you want to do this year? Do you want to go back to the Ship Inn, Port Seton for a meal and Disco (I haveapproached them again to obtain a price) or do you want to go for a meal, if so what type? Or what else would you like to do?I would like to get your views really as soon as possible but by Club Night on the ld October at the latest, If a decision ismade and we know the costs then all the money by Club Night on the 5h November. This really does help me no end if this isachieved, as on the night I just want to enjoy myself and not worry about chasing money.

Thanks in advance for your prompt replies.

The main in-creases were due to the RSGB Islands On The Air(IOTA) contest on24th/25th July on the non-WARC bands. Some gained from the associatedactivity before and after the contest too. Here ishow everyone faired...

The workload for Bob GM4UYZ isat its peak withlots of club events, Novice Class preparations andof course normal work to pay the bills! There hasbeen little progress as a result, however, Bob stillmanaged the following new ones during the IOTAContest weekend... 3.5MI{z : N.Ireland(Gl), Scot-land(GM), Wales(GW) and Poland(SP). A total offour more on FIF.

Ron GMONTL didn't manage to benefit from theincreased IOTA weekend activity as he was onTiree taking part in the main club entry 2A0CCC|P. He still managed a few new IOTAs after return-ing from Tiree though! Despite this and continuingradio problems with his IC775DSP progress hasstill been made. Ron did turn up an interestinganomaly though. He worked 4UlVIC in Viennaand as he says it "does NOT seem to qualify for ta-bles somehow". Upon investigation I found in thatthe RSGB prefix guide that 4UIWC in Vienna and4UIWB in Washington DC only count for theirown countries (OE and W) whereas 4UIITU is atotally separate DXCC entity. Rons new oneswers... 7tfr12: Estonia(ES); laMFIz : Sri Lanka(4S), Azores(CU), Philippines(Du), Balearic Is(EA6), Liechtenstein(FlB0), Bosnia Herzegovina(T9); lSMHz : St Paul Is(CY9), Liechtenstein(FIB0 ) ; 2 lNftIz : Zambia{9J ), Paki stan(AP ), Arme -nia(EK); 241\frIz: Ceuta & Melilla(EA9), Turkey(TA), India(W); z9i|lftlz : French Guiana(FY). Ahealthy increase of 16 on Ftr.

A quiet month forDavid GM4WLL. One new4msquare during the 7OMFIz Trophy Contest and anew 10m square on QRP CW during IOTA. Theywere... 281\frIz : Poland(SP); 70MHz : JO03(G),An increase on I on FIF and 1 on WIF.

There is no update from the "Shack By The Sea"this month as Wallace MM0AMV is in the midst ofa shack refurbishment program. Hopefully we willhave an update from the "Shack By The Sea Mk2"next month.

A half size G5RV was added at the QTH of JohnM0BEX for the IOTA contest weekend and re-sulted in a few new ones. He also dusted offhisCW cobwebs and managed some QSOs on lOMFfu.His new points this month were as a result of...3.5MHz : Germany(Dl), France(F), England(G),Isle of Man(GD), N lreland(Gl), Scotland(GM),GuernSey(GU), Wales(GW), Belgium(ON), Neth-erlands(PA), Sweden(SM); TMHz : Jersey(GJ),Guernsey(GU); lOMFIz : Germany(Dl), Switzer-land(IIB9 ), France(F) ; | 4l\ltrfz : B alearic Is@A6 ),Estonia(ES), Kyrghistan(Ex), Wales(GW), Sar-dinia(S)" Aland Is(OH0), Netherlands(PA), Greece(SV), Uzbekistan(UJ), Canada(VE); I SMHz : Eire(EI), France(F), Luxembourg(LX), Bulgaria(LZ),Aland Is(OH0), Asiatic Russia(UA9), Macedonia(23); zllvfrIz : Malta(9H), Kuwait(9K), Armenia(EK), Denmark(O Z), Kazakhsta(tlN). Heading upthe table as a result of 38 additions on F{F.

I too was on Tiree for the IOTA weekend and to-gether with lots of other things happening this hasresulted in no improvement at GM0CLN over thelast month. Not a satisfactory situation but one Ihope to rectif, soon!

Finally, a very hurried update, consisting only ofnew totals, was received from Jim MM0BQI thismonth just before he left on a business trip. As aresult I don't have exact details of Jim's new onesbut I can tell you how many there are on each band. The increases have been almost exclusively due toJim's trip to Benbecula (EU-010). This was mainlyto enter the IOTA contest and Jim says that duringthe whole trip he managed 1000 QSOs. The in-creases were therefore as follows...3.51vfrI2 .6more;7ll/ftIz:9 more; lOMIfz: I more; I4WIz:24 more;zl}./frIz: 18 more; 24\/ftIz: I more;2&\/frIz: 10 more. A huge increase of 69 on FIF....Iguess it was a good contestl

Thanks for your continuing support with the tables
