BLINDSIDED BIOLoved or hated, but Never Ignored

"I think it's important to write what you know," says David Cook, the voice behind Axium. "Everybody has inner demons in the closet. I just confront these inner demons in a public forum.

Inspired by love, loss, and everything in between, Cook and his band mates--guitarist Jeff Shrout and drummer Bobby Kerr -- have built a formidable fan base through two years of high-octane performances, during which time they have shared concert bills with artists ranging from Caroline s Spine and Maroon 5 to Smashmouth and Fountains of Wayne.

Capturing the energy of Axium's live shows, the group's newest album Blindsided balances delicacy and aggression in equal measure. Stirred by honest antagonism (Feed Your Ego, Clean Break) and emotional sub currents (Just In Case, Testament)the songs on Blindsided seek a deeper resonance to obvious realities.

Of special note is "Truth Is A Gun," based on the ideal that honesty can, and sometimes does, force you to leave your comfort zone. My mindset in writing Truth was to convey my regret for whatever dishonesty I had committed in life and how it had hurt those around me. Cook says of Blindsided s first single. The lyrics, however, contradict that idea. The lyrics seem to suggest that I am condemning others for lying, when in fact I’m condemning myself.

Blindsided traces the group's journey thus far, and points towards new achievements ahead. Throughout, the album emphasizes raw, edgy guitars laced with memorable hooks--the signature approach which has fueled Axium since its inception. Born in Houston, but raised in Kansas City, David Cook helped form Axium in 1999. Teaming up with his childhood friend, Bobby Kerr, the two began making music under the name Redeye. It wasn't until 2001, after a chance meeting with 8STOPS7 lead singer Evan Sula-Goff that they decided to change their name to Axium and begin to really delve into songwriting.

After landing current lead guitarist, Jeff Shrout on guitar in the fall of 2001, Cook had finally found the 1-2 songwriting combination he d been looking for. The two

Page 3: (1999 – 2005) AXIUM Compilation

immediately began writing for their debut album, Matter of Time, which was released in December of 2002. Upon its release, an immediate buzz began circulating about Axium throughout the Midwest. The album was heard by, among others, Midwestbands.com, who named Axium their Band of the Month.

Having an alternative slant to their rock, [Axium's] music is not only fresh and distinctive, but with the strong vocals and BIG sound it is reminiscent of the power rock of the 80's: A little dark, but not depressing a little edgy, but not scary. It's strong, feel-good, soul strengthening music! Midwestbands.com

The group has steadily built a rabid regional fan base with their compelling performances onstage and their friendly demeanor offstage. We've been on the other end of that spectrum, where musicians are so unfriendly. Kerr states, We don't want to be that band. We love our fans. Hell, I don't even know if you can call them fans. 'Friends' is almost more appropriate."

This friendly attitude, coupled with a musicianship wise beyond their years, the members of Axium have shown perseverance that has brought powerful results. With the release of Blindsided and national touring already under their belt, Axium continues their upward rise across the country!

Axium was formed in 1999 by lead vocalist, David Cook and drummer, Bobby Kerr. These two went through a few other members in Axium, but these two always stuck together. It was in May of 2001, that David and Bobby finally found what they had been searching for: The missing link of Axium, Jeff Shrout. When Jeff came into the picture, he added the exact punch and charisma that Axium had been looking for. Since then, Axium has accomplished what they have set out to do. Despite their young age, Axium

Page 4: (1999 – 2005) AXIUM Compilation

has proven that they can play with the best in the business, sharing the stage with 8 Stops 7, Caroline's Spine, Maroon 5, Fountains of Wayne, and SMASH MOUTH! Not to mention in May, Axium was named one of MILK's Top 100 Unsigned Acts in America and is currently listed in their top 15.

Axium released their debut full-length album, Matter of Time, back in December of 2002 and have supported it on the road playing at venues which reside in the states of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Indiana, and California! The long anticipated sophomore release, "Blindsided", hit the public on September 12, 2003 and it already has gained and reached a much wider fan base for Axium.

2003 was a very successful and eventful year for AXIUM and '04 can only be expected to have twice the hard work, twice the music, and twice the fun. "Blindsided" has thrust Axium into the limelight of not only their previous fans, but those who have long awaited pure, hard ROCK from the Midwest. Touring has been a strong point for the band in the past year; traveling to many new places and reaching the broader fanbase that Axium has planned. Recently named Kansas City's best band, Axium has proven why they do what they do. 2004 has also brought a new LIVE album and yet to be released is Axium's anticipated 3rd studio album in 2 years, entitled "The Story Thus Far."

Axium deserves to be heard on a massive scale and it is our plan to make that happen!

This Saturday the Uptown Theatre in Kansas City will host "Scream for Relief," an all-ages concert featuring a medley of local bands, to raise money in aid of the tsunami and Sudan relief efforts.

The concert headliner is Warrensburg band Axium, accompanied by area bands such as Ides of April, Grifter, Flee the Scene, Freshmen and The New Foes. All bands have agreed to play the concert free of charge.

"More than anything, it's important to use whatever talents you have to better everyone else around you," said David Cook, Axium's lead singer and student at Central.

/snip/With Saturday's event being staged in the Uptown Theater, a major venue in the Kansas City area, Cook believes the bands involved will gain from this experience, not only from a philanthropic standpoint, but also from a career standpoint. "It's kind of a co-opportunity," Cook said. "We hope that there are a lot of people there, and that they learn

Page 6: (1999 – 2005) AXIUM Compilation

about us as a band, and that people enjoy us. But we also hope (the relief effort) is a success, to a point that something like this can thrive in Kansas City. It's not every day that you see an all local show at a venue like the Uptown Theater."

/snip/Cook, who is selling tickets in order to further the effort, is also hopeful for the concert's monetary success.

"I think that people are inherently good and constantly want to help other people," Cook said. "And I think this is a very good outlet in which to do so."

Amazing – almost everything your heart could desire on Axium

/snip/1994 - Dave and Bobby meet while playing baseball for the Blue Springs Bombers. They also do choir and theatre together at Georgeff-Baker Middle School. However, they have a falling out over a girl and go their separate ways. Bobby's family moves to the other side of town, but then David's family follows not long after.

1997 - Freshman year at Blue Springs South High School , they date two girls who are best friends and they become friends again.

1999 - Bobby and Dave put together a band they call Red Eye, with Bob on drums, Dave on lead vocals, Matt McLaughlin on guitar and Drew Foss on bass. Drew is soon replaced by Anthony Mazzarella.

2001 - Band's name is changed, first to Axiom, then Axium .

2001 - They do their first studio recording, commonly known as "Demo #1".

2001 - Bobby, Dave, Matt and Anthony graduate from high school. Matt leaves to go to school in Iowa. It's unclear exactly when Anthony left, but it seems to be during the summer.

2001 - Jeff Shrout joins the band as the new lead guitarist. There are conflicting reports as to whether that happened in May or in the Fall. It was definitely before the second demo disc was done.

Fall 2001 - Bobby, Dave and Jeff all start at what was then called Central Missouri State University . Its name wasn't changed to UCM until September 2006.

Page 7: (1999 – 2005) AXIUM Compilation

2001 - The band records 3 additional demo songs, with producer Mitch Rosenow filling in on bass. These are put together with the original tracks, to form "Demo #2".

2002 - Jerron Nichols joins the band on bass. Axium plays a number of regional shows and starts to gain some notice.

December 2002 - The band releases its first full-length studio album, Matter Of Time .2003 - The band continues to play numerous shows around the midwest. They record a full set of new demos at the legendary Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa, OK, in preparation for their second album.

Spring 2003 - Their song "Hold" (featuring Andy Skib of MWK and Mikey J of New Science doing guest vocals) is chosen to play during the pre-movie sequence at thousands of AMC Theatres nationwide. It runs for a year.

August 31, 2003 - Axium plays a show with Midwest Kings - this is the first documented instance I can find of the two bands sharing a stage, although it may have happened before this.

September 12, 2003 - Axium releases their second studio album, Blindsided . "Truth Is A Gun" is the first single.

2003 - Jerron leaves the band and Ryan Butler takes over on bass.

January 2004 - The Examiner names Axium as the Best Band in Kansas City in their entertainment section, "The X".

February 14, 2004 - Axium records their show at The Venue in Tulsa, OK, and releases it as Alive In Tulsa .

Spring 2004 - Ryan leaves the band. Work begins on their third studio album with Neal Tiemann of MWK filling in on bass. Nick Gibson does some additional guitar tracking.

May 2004 - The "Got Milk?" campaign names Axium as one of the top 15 independent bands in the country.

June 2004 - Travis Grogan joins the band on bass.

July 1, 2004 - Axium releases their third and final studio album, The Story Thus Far .

Summer 2004 - Axium tours to support the album, with MWK joining them on the road.

January 2005 - Bobby decides to leave the band to pursue other career opportunities in Wisconsin. There seems to be someone named Keith who takes over on drums, but I can't find anything else about him.

Page 8: (1999 – 2005) AXIUM Compilation

February 2005 - Dave starts work on his solo project which will become Analog Heart , working with Josh Center of MWK, among others.

May 2005 - Dave releases "Porcelain" as a solo single to Kansas City radio.

May 2005 - Bobby and Jeff graduate from CMSU.

Summer 2005 - Dave tours with MWK, playing rhythm guitar for them.

Fall 2005 - Andrew Cook starts attending CMSU.

March 2006 - Tracking is finished on Analog Heart.

March 20, 2006 - Axium announces that they will be splitting up at the end of April, after three farewell shows in Warrensburg, Omaha and Kansas City.

April 27, 2006 - Axium plays their last show at The Hurricane in Kansas City with Nathan Russell on drums. It's recorded and, although not an official release, is commonly known as Welcome To The Funeral. Dave also sells the first copies of Analog Heart at the show.

May 2, 2006 - David's solo record, Analog Heart, is officially released.

May 2006 - David graduates from CMSU and moves to Tulsa to pursue his solo project and play guitar and bass for MWK.

Current notes... Bobby Kerr recorded an album of standards, Come Fly With Me , in 2006 under the name Bobby James and still does occasional gigs as a crooner. Jeff Shrout and Travis Grogan are still working together as part of the Patrick Lentz Project . They are also currently working on an EP of their own. Jerron Nichols is a Marine stationed in North Carolina. Ryan Butler is living in Las Vegas and working on a solo record. Sadly, early bassist Anthony Mazzarella lost his life in July 2005 while serving in Iraq. He was 22.
