Your complete satisfaction with yourHonda automobile is our main goal.All personnel at Honda automobiledealerships are thoroughly trained toprovide the best service for yourvehicle. If you are not satisfied withany maintenance or repair work doneby the dealership, follow these threesteps:

Step 1 - Talk over your concerns withthe dealership’s management, such asthe Service Manager or GeneralManager. In most cases, a satisfactorysolution is found at this step.

Step 2 - We recognize that, on someoccasions, a customer will not betotally satisfied with a dealer’sdecision or actions in Step 1. If this isthe case, you should call or write theHonda Customer Relations ZoneOffice. The address and telephonenumber are on the inside front cover.Please provide the followinginformation:

• Year, model, and VehicleIdentification Number of yourvehicle, and its current mileage.

• The name of the dealer who soldyou the vehicle.

• The name of the dealer whoservices your vehicle.

• Date, mileage, and reason for eachvisit to a Honda dealership.

• Any non-Honda dealership repairservice for the problem(s).

• Your daytime and eveningtelephone numbers.

The staff of the Customer RelationsZone Office is interested in workingwith you and the dealership to find asatisfactory solution.

Step 3 - If you disagree with thedecision reached by the staff of theHonda Customer Relations ZoneOffice, you may request to have yourcase reviewed in an independent forum

run by the Council of Better BusinessBureaus (BBB). This program is called“BBB AUTO LINE.” You may file aclaim at any time by calling the BetterBusiness Bureau, toll-free, at1-800-955-5100. Your call will beautomatically directed to the BBB inyour area.

to accept it. If you accept thedecision, Honda will abide by it.Generally, disputes submitted to BBBAUTO LINE are resolved within 40days (47 days if you have not firstcontacted Honda about yourcomplaint).

Honda offers you the opportunity tomediate and arbitrate a disagreementthrough BBB AUTO LINE because wewant you to feel that you have beentreated fairly.

Eligibility is limited by your vehicle’sage, mileage, and other factors. In

order to file a claim, you need toprovide your name and address, theVehicle Identification Number of yourvehicle, and a brief statement outliningthe disagreement. Initially, BBB maytry to resolve the disagreement throughmediation. If this is not successful,your complaint will be reviewed by animpartial, volunteer arbitrator. You maypresent the facts of your case to thearbitrator at an informal meeting.

We encourage you to use thisprogram before, or instead of, goingto court. It is informal, free of chargeto you, and generally resolvesproblems much faster than the court

system. Lawyers are usually notinvolved in the resolution of claimsthrough the BBB, although you mayobtain one at your own expense ifyou choose.

If you want to go to court, we do notrequire you to first file a claim withBBB AUTO LINE. Please note thatlaws in some states may require thatyou file a claim with BBB AUTOLINE before you can proceed to astate-operated dispute resolutionprocess or the court system. If you donot accept the decision of BBB AUTOLINE, you can still go to court.

Lemon LawsMany states have enacted what arecommonly referred to as “LemonLaws.” Although the details of theselaws vary from state to state, theirmain purpose is to assure you certainrights if you have problems with yournew vehicle. In general terms, theselaws usually say that if your vehiclehas a problem that cannot be repairedin several attempts, or has a series ofproblems that keep it out of servicefor an extended period, you mayqualify for relief under the lemon lawin your state.

Some states require you to notify themanufacturer about the problem(s),and some states give themanufacturer, or its representative, achance to correct the problem(s). Astate may require you to submit yourcomplaint to a dispute resolutionprogram, such as BBB AUTO LINE,before proceeding to other forums.

Lemon Laws have many provisions.If you feel your new Honda qualifiesfor consideration under the lemon lawin your area, we suggest you checkthe laws in your state.

We want you to be satisfied with yourHonda automobile. If you have anyquestions, please contact your Hondadealer or the Customer RelationsZone Office.

Some Repairs May Be Covered Beyond the Limited Warranty

Honda may cover, under a specialadjustment program, some or all ofthe cost to repair a problem that is notcovered by your vehicle’s limitedwarranties.

If your vehicle develops a problemyou feel should be repaired by Hondaat no cost, discuss it with your dealer.

If you are not satisfied with yourHonda dealer’s decision, call or writethe Honda Customer Relations ZoneOffice (the address and telephonenumber are on the inside front cover).Please provide this information aboutyour vehicle: year, model, VehicleIdentification Number (VIN),mileage, maintenance history, adetailed explanation of the problem,and why you think Honda should beresponsible for the repair. Yourrequest will be investigated, and youwill be informed of Honda’s decision.

12 Your Warranties in Detail

The warranty coverages in thisbooklet are offered only to the owner of a 1997 Honda automobile.To be covered, the vehicle must bedistributed by American Hondathrough the Honda AutomobileDivision, and sold by a Hondaautomobile dealer in the UnitedStates, Puerto Rico, or the U.S.Virgin Islands.

NOTE: American Honda does notdistribute the 1997 Passport SportUtility Vehicle in Puerto Rico or theU.S. Virgin Islands. Therefore, thesewarranty coverages do not apply toany 1997 Passport that is registeredor normally driven in those areas.

Parts replaced under any of thewarranties in this booklet become theproperty of Honda. Honda will makethe final decision whether to repairany existing part or assembly orreplace it.

Honda may use factory-remanufactured parts rather than newparts for some warranty repairs. Thoseparts, like new parts, are covered forthe remainder of the New Car LimitedWarranty (see page 13).

The warranties in this booklet do notcover:

• The failure of any part oraccessory due to:

– Abuse, misuse, accidentaldamage, or acts of God.

– Improper installation ormaintenance.

– A low fluid level or the use of afluid other than specified byHonda.

– The installation of any part thatis not equal to the original inquality of materials orworkmanship.

– Use of the vehicle in competitionor racing events.

• Any installed part or accessorythat fails because it was notdesigned to fit that year and modelof Honda.

• Any vehicle with an odometer thathas been altered so it is impossibleto determine the actual mileage.

• Any vehicle while it is registeredor normally driven outside theUnited States, Puerto Rico, or theU.S. Virgin Islands.

• Any failure caused by modifying thevehicle, or installing accessories notauthorized by Honda.

• Any incidental expenses orinconvenience you may suffer dueto the loss of use of your vehicle.

• Any vehicle that has ever beendeclared a total loss or sold forsalvage by a financial institution orinsurer, or that has been issued a“salvage” or similar title under anystate’s law. This exclusion does notapply to the Emissions Warranties.

Time and Mileage PeriodThis warranty begins on the date thevehicle is put into use in one of thefollowing ways:

• The vehicle is delivered to the firstpurchaser by a Honda dealer.

• The vehicle is leased.

• The vehicle is used as ademonstrator or company vehicle.

Your vehicle is covered for 3 years or36,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Warranty CoverageHonda will repair or replace any partthat is defective in material orworkmanship under normal use. SeeProper Operation on page 40. Allrepairs/replacements made under thiswarranty are free of charge. Thereplaced or repaired parts are coveredonly until this New Car Warrantyexpires.

This Warranty Does Not Cover:• Emissions control systems,

Accessories, Battery, or Tires.(They have their own warranties.)

• Normal wear or deterioration ofany part.

• Cleaning and polishing.

• The adding of any fluids, unlessthey are needed as part of awarranty repair.

• Air conditioner refrigerant chargeafter the first year, unless requiredas part of a warranty repair.

• Broken, chipped, or scratchedwindow glass unless it is due toa defect in material orworkmanship.

• Any item concerning yourvehicle’s general appearance thatis not due to a defect in material orworkmanship.

• The replacement of expendablemaintenance items (such as sparkplugs, filters, wiper blades, orbrake pads/linings) unless they aredefective in material orworkmanship.

• Wheel balancing and wheelalignment after 1 year or 12,000miles, unless required as part of awarranty repair.

Federal Emissions Warranties


Your Warranty Rightsand ObligationsThe Federal Emissions-relatedDefects and Emissions Performancewarranties are in addition to theHonda New Car Limited Warranty.These warranties are given only tothe owner of a 1997 Hondadistributed by American Hondathrough the Honda AutomobileDivision, and sold by an authorizedHonda dealer in the fifty UnitedStates, the District of Columbia, theCommonwealth of Puerto Rico, theVirgin Islands, Guam, AmericanSamoa, and the Commonwealth ofthe Northern Mariana Islands.

If an authorized Honda automobiledealer cannot repair your vehicle orhonor your claim within a reasonableperiod of time, contact the HondaCustomer Relations Zone Office forassistance (see inside front cover), oryou may write to:

Your ResponsibilitiesTo qualify for coverage by theDefects and Performance warranties,you should operate and maintain your1997 Honda according to therequirements on page 40 of thiswarranty booklet, and theMaintenance Schedule in theOwner’s Manual. This schedule isdesigned to keep your vehicle’semissions control systemsfunctioning properly by maintainingyour vehicle in peak operatingcondition.

Honda will not deny a claim foremissions warranty coverage simplybecause you did not maintain the

vehicle, or do not have maintenancerecords to show that you did.However, any part that fails becauseof abuse or lack of maintenance willnot be covered by this warranty.

Honda recommends that only partssupplied by Honda or equivalentparts be used to repair your vehicle.Maintenance, replacement, orrepair of emissions control devicesand systems may be done by anyautomotive repair establishmentor individual.

Under normal circumstances, Hondawill pay for warranty repairs onlywhen they are performed at anauthorized Honda repair facility.However, in an emergency situation,the repair of emissions control devicesor systems may be done by anyautomotive repair establishment orindividual, or by the owner, using anyreplacement part. An emergencysituation is considered to exist if an



authorized Honda repair facility orwarranted part is not reasonablyavailable to correct a problem.

Honda will reimburse you for thoseemergency repairs that are covered bythe Emissions Warranties. Partsreimbursement is at themanufacturer’s suggested retail price,and labor reimbursement is at ageographically-appropriate hourlylabor rate for Honda’s recommendedtime allowance. For reimbursement,present the replaced parts and a copyof the paid receipt to any authorizedHonda automobile dealer.

The use of replacement parts notequivalent to the original parts mayimpair the effectiveness of yourvehicle’s emissions control systems.If a non-equivalent replacement partis used in the maintenance or repairof your vehicle, and if an authorizedHonda automobile dealer determinesit is defective or causes a failure of a

warranted part, your claim for repairto bring your vehicle into compliancewith applicable standards may bedenied. If the part in question is notrelated to the reason your vehiclefails to meet the standards, yourclaim will not be denied.

These Warranties Do Not Cover:• Failures or malfunctions of the

emissions control systems causedby abuse, alteration, accident,misuse, or the use of leadedgasoline.

• Replacement of maintenance itemssuch as, but not limited to, sparkplugs, filters, hoses, belts, coolantor lubricants beyond their firstrequired maintenance point.

• Consequential damages such as lossof time or use of the vehicle.



Emissions-related Design and Defects Warranty

Design and Defects WarrantyCoverageHonda warrants that your automobile:

1. is designed, built and equipped toconform at the time of sale with allapplicable emissions standards.

and

2. is free from defects in materialsand workmanship that wouldcause it to fail to conform withapplicable emissions requirementsduring the specified time andmileage period.

A partial list of the parts covered by thiswarranty is on pages 18-20. Severalparts in the emissions control systemsare covered for 8 years or 80,000 miles,whichever comes first. Those parts areidentified by 8/80 on pages 18-20.

Time and Mileage PeriodThis warranty begins on the date thevehicle is delivered to the firstpurchaser other than an authorizedHonda dealer, or the date it is first usedas a demonstrator, lease, or companyvehicle, whichever comes first, andcontinues for 3 years or 36,000 miles,whichever comes first.

To Get EmissionsWarranty ServiceRepairs covered by this warranty willbe performed at no charge for parts,labor, and diagnosis.

An authorized Honda dealer isrequired, within 30 days of the timeyou take your vehicle to the dealerfor emissions warranty service, toeither honor your claim foradjustment, repair, or replacement, or

notify you in writing that your claimis being denied, and explain why.

If this time limit is not met, anauthorized Honda dealer will performthe required repairs freeof charge. The only exceptionsallowed are when you, the owner,request or agree to a delay, or thedelay is caused by circumstancesbeyond the control of Honda or thedealer.

If an authorized Honda automobiledealer is not able to repair yourvehicle within 30 days from the timeyou take it to the dealer, you mayhave your vehicle repaired at anyrepair facility you choose. The onlyexceptions allowed are when you, theowner, request or agree to a delay, orthe delay is caused by circumstances



Emissions Performance Warranty

beyond the control of Honda or thedealer

If you choose a repair facility that isnot an authorized Honda dealer,Honda will reimburse you for therepair. Parts reimbursement is at themanufacturer’s suggested retail price,and labor reimbursement is at ageographically-appropriate hourlyrate for Honda’s recommended timeallowance. Your Warranty Rightsand ObligationsThe California Air Resources Boardand Honda are pleased to explain theemission control systems warranty onyour 1997 vehicle. In California, newmotor vehicles must be designed, builtand equipped to meet the State’sstringent anti-smog standards. Hondamust warrant the emission controlsystem on your vehicle for the periodsof time listed below provided there hasbeen no abuse, neglect or impropermaintenance of your vehicle.

Your emission control system mayinclude parts such as the carburetoror fuel injection system, the ignitionsystem, catalytic converter, andengine computer. Also included maybe hoses, belts, connectors and otheremissions-related assemblies.

Where a warrantable condition exists,Honda will repair your vehicle at nocost to you including diagnosis, partsand labor.

Manufacturer’s WarrantyCoverageFor 3 years or 50,000 miles(whichever first occurs):• If your vehicle fails a Smog Check

Owner’s Warranty ResponsibilitiesAs the vehicle owner, you areresponsible for the performance of therequired maintenance listed in yourowner’s manual. Honda recommendsthat you retain all receipts coveringmaintenance on your vehicle, butHonda cannot deny warranty solelyfor the lack of receipts or for yourfailure to ensure the performance ofall scheduled maintenance.

You are responsible for presentingyour vehicle to a Honda dealer assoon as a problem exists. Thewarranty repairs should be completedin a reasonable amount of time, not toexceed 30 days.

As the vehicle owner, you shouldalso be aware that Honda may denyyou warranty coverage if yourvehicle or a part has failed due toabuse, neglect, improper maintenanceor unapproved modifications.

Your ResponsibilitiesTo qualify for coverage under thedefects and performance warranties,you should operate and maintain your1997 Honda automobile according tothe requirements on page 40 of thisWarranty booklet, and theMaintenance Schedule in theOwner’s Manual. This schedule isdesigned to keep your vehicle’semissions control systemsfunctioning properly by maintainingyour vehicle in peak operatingcondition.

Honda will not deny a claim foremissions warranty coverage simplybecause you did not maintain thevehicle, or do not have maintenancerecords to show that you did. However,any part that fails because of abuse orlack of required maintenance will notbe covered by this warranty.

Honda recommends that only partssupplied by Honda or equivalentparts be used to repair your vehicle.Maintenance, replacement, orrepair of emissions control devicesand systems may be done by anyautomotive repair establishment orindividual.

Under normal circumstances, Hondawill pay for warranty repairs onlywhen they are performed at anauthorized Honda repair facility.However, in an emergency situation,the repair of emissions controldevices or systems may be done byany automotive repair establishmentor individual, or by the owner, usingany replacement part.

An emergency situation is consideredto exist if an authorized Honda repairfacility is not reasonably available, orwhen a warranted part is not availablewithin 30 days, or when an authorizedHonda repair facility is unable tocomplete a repair within30 days.

Honda will reimburse you for thoseemergency repairs, including diagnosis,covered by the Emissions Warranties.Parts reimbursement is at themanufacturer’s suggested retail price,and labor reimbursement is at ageographically-appropriate hourly laborrate for Honda’s recommended timeallowance. For reimbursement, presentthe replaced parts and a copy of thepaid receipt to any authorized Hondadealer.



The use of replacement parts notequivalent to the original parts mayimpair the effectiveness of yourvehicle’s emissions control systems.If a non-equivalent replacement partis used in the maintenance or repairof your vehicle, and if an authorizedHonda automobile dealer determinesit is defective or causes damage to awarranted part, your claim for repairto bring your vehicle into compliancewith applicable standards may bedenied. If the part in question is notrelated to the reason your vehiclefails to meet the standards, yourclaim will not be denied.

These Warranties Do Not Cover:• Failures or malfunctions of the

emissions control systems causedby abuse, alteration, accident,misuse, or the use of leadedgasoline.

• Replacement of maintenance itemssuch as, but not limited to, sparkplugs, filters, hoses, belts, coolantor lubricants beyond their firstscheduled maintenance.

• Consequential damages such as lossof time or use of the vehicle.



Emissions Control Systems Defects Warranty

Warranty CoverageHonda warrants to the owner of any1997 California model that theautomobile:1. Is designed, built and equipped to

conform at the time of sale with allapplicable emissions standards

and2. Is free from defects in materials

and workmanship which wouldcause it to fail to conform withapplicable requirements duringthe specified time and mileageperiods.

Warranty CoverageDuring the first 2 years, a defectivebattery will be replaced at no cost toyou. Diagnosis, labor, installation, andthe cost of the replacement battery arecovered by Honda.

If the battery fails during the last 12months of this 3 year warrantyperiod, you will receive a 50 percentcredit towards the purchase of a newbattery from your Honda dealer.

Tires

Seat Belt Limited Warranty


While seat belts cannot completelyremove the possibility of injury, theydo provide a very significant level ofprotection when used properly.Honda believes the best way toenhance your safety is to use yourseat belt. To encourage their use, theseat belts should always be in goodoperating condition.

Time PeriodThis warranty continues for theuseful life of the vehicle.

Warranty CoverageHonda will repair or replace, at itsoption, any Honda seat beltcomponent that fails to functionproperly during normal use. Thisincludes all parts and labor charges.

This Warranty Does Not Cover:• Replacement of a properly-

functioning seat belt assemblystrictly for cosmetic or comfortreasons.

• Failure caused by abuse, alteration,accidental damage, misuse, ormalfunction resulting from acollision.

Rust Perforation Limited Warranty


Only the vehicle’s owner can make aclaim under this warranty. Coveragecannot be transferred to any otherperson or institution (such as aninsurance company).

Time and Mileage PeriodThis warranty’s coverage begins onthe same date as the New CarLimited Warranty (see page 13), andcontinues for 5 years with no mileagelimit. Any body panels repaired orreplaced under this warranty arecovered only for the time remainingin the original 5 years of coverage.

Warranty CoverageHonda will repair or replace anyoriginal body panel that rustscompletely through from the insideout (perforated by corrosion). Thisincludes panels previously repairedor replaced under this warranty. Rustthat does not perforate, but is causedby a defect in material or

workmanship, is covered under theNew Car Limited Warranty. You willnot be charged for any parts,material, or labor under this warranty.The decision to repair, rather thanreplace, any rusted body panel will bemade by Honda.

This Warranty Does Not Cover:• Surface rust on the underbody or

any other part of the vehicleexcept body panels.

• Rusting of body panels that wererepaired, replaced, or refinishedafter retail sale of the vehicle,unless those panels were repairedor replaced under this warranty.

• Body panel rust caused by abuse,misuse, or lack of maintenance.

• Rusting where the paint has beendamaged by road hazards such asstones and debris.

• Rust caused by immersion of thebody panel in water, mud, or sand;or resulting from exposure tocorrosive gas or industrial fallout.

• Paint matching. (Honda reservesthe right to decide how much ofthe repaired or replaced panel, andany adjoining body panels, need tobe repainted to match the originalfinish. Honda will not, under anycircumstances, authorize paintingthe entire vehicle strictly for thepurpose of paint matching.)

Accessory Limited Warranty


This warranty applies to anyaccessory distributed by AmericanHonda and purchased from a Hondaautomobile dealer in the UnitedStates, Puerto Rico, or the U.S.Virgin Islands.

Time and Mileage PeriodAccessories Installed Prior toRetail Sale: This warranty begins onthe same date as the New CarLimited Warranty (see page 13). Allaccessories are covered for the lengthof the New Car Limited Warranty: 3years or 36,000 miles, whichevercomes first.

Accessories Installed by the DealerAfter Retail Sale: This warrantybegins on the date the accessory isinstalled on the vehicle. Allaccessories are covered for the longerof the following two periods:

1) The time remaining in the NewCar Limited Warranty,

or

2) 1 year or 12,000 miles,whichever comes first.

Accessories Not Installed by aHonda Dealer: This warranty beginson the date the accessory ispurchased from a Honda dealer. Allaccessories are covered for 1 year.

Warranty CoverageHonda will repair or replace anyHonda accessory that is defective inmaterial or workmanship undernormal use. Honda will decide if anaccessory will be repaired rather thanreplaced. If the accessory wasinstalled by a Honda dealer, all partsand labor costs are covered. If theaccessory was installed by someoneelse, the cost of all parts to repair orreplace it are covered by Honda, butyou must pay the labor costs.

Accessory Limited Warranty


Audio System Component Exchange ProgramIf the audio system in your Hondadevelops a problem during this warrantyperiod, telephone the ServiceDepartment at your Honda dealer.The service person will ask youseveral questions about your vehicleand the problem. If he decides fromthis conversation that the problem isin one of the system’s majorcomponents (radio, CD player), hewill immediately order a replacementcomponent. This will take less than aweek. You will then be notified tobring your vehicle to the dealershipso the audio system can be repaired.Telephoning your dealer about anaudio system problem allows him toserve you more efficiently and cansave you an extra trip.

Honda may use factory-remanufactured audio componentsrather than new components for somewarranty repairs. Those components,like new components, are covered forthe remainder of the Accessory LimitedWarranty.

This Warranty Does Not Cover:• Air conditioner refrigerant charge

after the first year, unless requiredas part of a warranty repair.

• Any accessory installed on aHonda other than the year ormodel it was designed to fit.

• Any accessory that is improperlyinstalled.

• Any claim presented without proofof accessory purchase and/orinstallation date and vehiclemileage at time of installation.

• The cost of labor to repair orreplace any accessory that was notoriginally installed by a Hondadealer.

Warranty CoverageHonda will repair or replace any partcovered by this warranty that isdefective in material or workmanshipunder normal use. If the part wasoriginally installed by a Hondadealer, the repair or replacement willbe done with no charge for parts orlabor. If the part was originallyinstalled by someone else, the cost ofthe replacement or repair is coveredby Honda, but you must pay allinstallation costs.

This Warranty Does Not Cover:• Claims which do not include

documented proof of purchasedate, installation date, and vehiclemileage at the time of installation.

• Parts considered to be normalmaintenance items, unless they aredefective in material orworkmanship. Some examples arespark plugs, filters, and brakepads.

• Parts replaced under the New CarLimited Warranty or parts coveredby other warranties in this manual.

Replacement Battery Limited Warranty


This warranty applies only toreplacement batteries purchased froma Honda automobile dealer in theUnited States, Puerto Rico, or theU.S. Virgin Islands.

Time and Mileage PeriodReplacement batteries are covered bya 3 year limited warranty.

Warranty CoverageDuring the first year of service, adefective replacement battery will bereplaced at no cost for the newbattery, labor, or installation.

After the first year, you will receive acredit toward the purchase of a newbattery. This credit is calculated bydividing the current suggested retailprice by 36; then multiplying by thenumber of months left in thiswarranty coverage. No cashreimbursement will be made. You areresponsible for the labor orinstallation charges.

Replacement Muffler Lifetime Limited Warranty


Time and Mileage PeriodThe Honda automobile replacementmuffler is warranted against defectsin material and workmanship for aslong as that muffler’s purchaser ownsthe vehicle on which it is installed.

If the warranted muffler fails due to adefect, Honda will exchange it. Youmust have proof of purchase for thefailed muffler. If the muffler wasoriginally installed by a Hondadealer, the cost of labor for removaland replacement is also covered bythis warranty.

This Warranty Does Not Cover:• Labor cost for removal and

replacement if the defectivemuffler was not originally installedby a Honda dealer.

• Other parts of the exhaust system,including pipes, gaskets, hangers,clamps, or other mountinghardware.

• The original equipment muffler, orany muffler installed while theNew Car Limited Warranty is ineffect.

• The cost of parts or labor for anyadditional repairs associated withreplacing the warranted muffler.

40 Your Responsibility

By keeping your Honda in topcondition, you will be rewarded withyears of trouble-free service at thelowest operating cost. The keys tokeeping your Honda in top conditionare proper operation and regularmaintenance.

Proper OperationYour Honda is designed for use as apassenger vehicle. You should use itto transport people and their luggageon regular roads and highways.Several things you should do to takecare of your Honda are:

• Avoid exceeding your vehicle’s loadlimit. This puts excess strain on theengine, brakes, and several othersystems in your vehicle. Refer to theOwner’s Manual to find the locationof the Load Limit label on yourvehicle.

• Operate your Honda on reasonableroads within the legal speed limit.

• Drive your Honda regularly over adistance of several miles. Like aperson, a vehicle functions betterwith regular exercise.

• Always use an unleaded gasolineof the proper Octane Number(Anti-Knock Index). See yourOwner’s Manual for moreinformation.

MaintenanceYou should check the engine oil andradiator coolant levels each time youfill the gas tank. This protects thevital systems of your Honda, and mayhelp you discover potential problems.

Always maintain your 1997 Hondaaccording to the MaintenanceSchedule in your Owner’s Manual.The time and mileage intervals givenin this Schedule for inspections andreplacements should never beexceeded. They are essential totrouble-free operation. Parts that failbecause they did not get proper,timely maintenance are not coveredby warranty. However, if a part failsdue to a defect in material orworkmanship, the warranty claimwill not be denied because ofimproper maintenance or operation.

The people at your Honda dealer arefully trained and equipped toefficiently perform scheduledmaintenance on your 1997 Honda.However, service at the dealer is notmandatory for continued warrantycoverage. You can have scheduledmaintenance done somewhere otherthan your Honda dealer, or you cando the maintenance yourself.

If you regularly take your vehicle tothe Honda dealer for scheduledmaintenance, he will know its historyif you need to make a warranty claim.If someone else has been performingthe maintenance, the dealer may askfor evidence that you have properlymaintained the vehicle. This evidencemay consist of one or more of thefollowing:

• A Maintenance Record (such asthe one in the Owner’s Manual)showing the odometer mileage anddate for each service. Each entry inthis Record should be signed by aperson who is qualified to serviceautomobiles.

• Copies of repair orders or otherreceipts that include the odometermileage and date that the vehiclewas serviced. Each receipt shouldbe signed by a qualifiedautomotive service technician.

• A statement that you completedthe maintenance yourself, showingthe odometer mileage and date youdid the work. Receipts for thereplacement parts (fluids, filters,etc.) should accompany thisstatement.

NOTE: As an aid for the next owner,keep all maintenance receipts withthe vehicle if it is sold.

How to Get Warranty Service


You should take your vehicle, alongwith proof of purchase date, to aHonda automobile dealer during hisnormal service hours. If yourwarranty claim is for a replacementpart or accessory that was originallyinstalled by a Honda dealer, takealong proof of the vehicle’s mileageat the time of installation.

If your vehicle cannot be driven,contact the Honda automobile dealernearest to you for towing assistance.You do not have to pay for towingto the nearest Honda dealer if thefailure is covered by any of thewarranties in this book.

Emergency RepairsHonda recognizes that your vehiclecould develop a serious problemneeding immediate repair at a facilityother than a Honda dealer. Hondawill reimburse you for the repair if:

• The repair would normally becovered by one of the warrantiesin this booklet.

and

• All Honda dealers within 50 milesof the break-down were closed atthe time, or there were no Hondadealers within 50 miles.

and

• The vehicle was immobile, orattempting to drive the vehiclewould cause further damage or beunsafe.

For reimbursement, go to any Hondaautomobile dealer. You must showa copy of the paid receipt, and thereplaced part(s). The dealer willreimburse you for the parts at thecurrent manufacturer’s suggestedretail price; and you will bereimbursed for labor at ageographically-appropriate labor ratefor Honda’s recommended timeallowance.

Traveling Outside the United StatesIf you are planning to use yourHonda to travel outside the U.S.,you may want to contact the HondaConsumer Affairs Office. They cangive you information on Hondadistributors in the area you plan tovisit. You should also contact thetourist bureaus in the areas you will betraveling in to find out about theavailability of unleaded gasoline withthe proper octane rating.

Relocating Outsidethe United StatesAny vehicle purchased from anauthorized Honda dealer in thiscountry is manufactured to meetU.S. government safety andemissions specifications. Othercountries not only market differentHonda models, they also have theirown safety and emissions standardsthat differ from U.S. requirements.

If you plan to export your vehicle toanother country and register it there,we recommend that you contact thevehicle import agency in that countryto determine the requirements.American Honda does not have thisinformation.

Be advised that modifications to yourvehicle to meet another country’srequirements may be very expensiveand, in some cases, impossible toperform. Parts to modify a vehicle tomeet foreign specifications are notavailable in the U.S.

Getting your vehicle serviced inanother country may be difficult,even if you take it to a Honda dealer.Because that country may havemodels with different equipment andspecifications, the dealer may nothave parts that are suitable for yourU.S. vehicle.

Warranty CoverageOutside the United StatesThe warranties in this booklet coveronly Hondas purchased andregistered in the United States, PuertoRico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.Hondas registered and normallydriven in other countries are notcovered.

Honda dealers outside the U.S. maynot honor these warranties. If youhave your U.S.-specification Hondaserviced by a Honda dealer in anothercountry (while on vacation, forexample), and that service wouldnormally be covered by one of thewarranties in this booklet, pleasecontact American Honda.
