PRESiDENT'S REPORTThis is my final Annual Report to members of Wye River Surf Lifesaving Club, as I will notbe accepting nomination for a further term of office. The past season has been personally a very difficult one, both with family and workcommitments not enabling me to spend perhaps as much time at Wye River as I havemost certainly devoted in past seasons. My thanks must go to the rest of the Committee fortheir support during this time, and I am most proud to be able to report that the Committeehas been diligent in their responsibilities and have been able to function with delegation.and that my constant presence was not essential to the smooth administration of the Club.I have been a member of Wye River S.L.S.C. for over 27 years, during which time I havealways worked as an active and positive member of the Club and of course the Lifesavingmovement in general. For the past 4 years, I have represented my Club as President anduntil recently have found this experience to be a totally fulfilling and rewarding one I havealways been proud to be part of an organisation that works together for the good of allmembers and tile communityIt seems of late that there is what I find to be a most disturbing and saddening attitudinalchange of a certain sector. I would ask that everyone reflect upon the genetics of avoluntary association such as ours. Each year nominations are held and willing nomineesare elected to represent the members for a term of office, Each member of the committeegive of their own time (often at the expense of their own families, budgetary limits. businesscommitments etc.). They work for the benefit of fellow members and, of course, ultimatelythe community for which we all serve.Voluntary movements allover Australia at present are finding it more and more difficult tofunction because of the increased personal and business commitments. egoweekend workof those involved in their operation. How then can we encourage people to give of theirown time to assist others when they are continually faced with negative attitudes, criticism,"back biting", and other pastimes which only negate the positives trying to be achieved bythese hardworking volunteers. At our last Annual General Meeting for example, there werefour positions that we were unable to fill. This meant that the workload of an entire clubwas carried by a smaller group of volunteers. I find it very sad that a small sector of ourcommunity, with at times a lot to say, found it impossible to offer their services in a positiveand supportive way to the committee as a whole!Despite the problems described above, there have been many wonderful achievementsattained by the committee and club members. The club over the past 4 years has seenmembership grow to an all time high; finances not only remain soluble. but considering theeconomic climate of recent times quite healthy; the purchase of new and second handcompetition and lifesaving equipment vital to our ability to perform in our role as lifesavers:our beach has maintained a high standard of patrolling and protection of swimmers: and anearly completed new bunkhouse which will not only serve our club members but thecommunity of Wye River as a whole. Specific areas that I wish to expand upon regardingthis past season's performance are listed below.

Bunkhouse:At the start of the year the Committee's main aim was to get the new bunkhouse built anddown to Wye by the beginning of this season. With the bunkhouse nearing completion.there have been a number of working bees at Newport College of TAFE. Thanks inparticular to the O'Brien Family who have co-ordinated these working bees and for theirmany many hours of work,We are of course still awaiting the fina! arrival and erection of the bunkhouse at Wye River. At this point in time I would like to express sincere gratitude to Martin Geerings for themassive amount of time and effort (often at personal expense) that he has dedicated to thiscause. He has done a wonderful job in both directing the financial affairs regarding the .bunkhouse and in dealing either directly or by telephone with the various Council/Shire.;authorities time and time again to overcome bureaucratic hurdles.

FundraisingOnce again the Club relied on tin rattles in Geelong and Melbourne, cray raffles at theRookery Nook Hotel, Wye River Foreshore and Valley Camps, as our main source ofincome. The task of selling tickets and attending tin rattles yet again fell upon the "oldreliabtes". In order for the Wye River S.L.S.C. to provide equipment vital to effectivelifesaving and competition needs, each dub member must be prepared to make acommitment to attend and participate in these essential fundraising efforts. This is vital inorder for our Club to not only survive, but be a real and active force in the LifesavingMovement.

I would like to thank those members of the Club and local residents that have so farsupported our "Buy a Brick" campaign. As you can irnaqine the costs of the newbunkhouse are not minor to say the least and the longer the various departmental hiccupsand procrastination , the dearer the final outcome, Our bunkhouse will serve the localcommunity of Wye River, not just the Lifesaving organisation, and everyone has theopportunity to be part of its instigation in a very real and practical way. There are still bricksavailable, and ! would encourage anyone that has not already participated in thisfundraising venture and would like to, to please make contact with the Club,

Further fundraising has been achieved by our regular sausage sizzles, held at the clubhouse on Saturday evenings. Thanks to all the chief cooks and bottle washers!'Wing Ding":With the serious illness affecting Jack Nolan, the Nolan Family was of course unable toorganise the "Wing Ding", as they have so kindly done these past few years. However.even though it was not held on the traditional Australia Day weekend this year, the eventtook place once again at the Rookery Nook Hotel at Easter, My thanks on behalf of theCommittee must go to Paul Brown for his constant and on-going support of our Club. Mythanks also to the Committee themselves for taking on the organisation and running of thisevent for this year. Originally this event was organised and run by local residents of WyeRiver and Separation Creek, independent of the Club. If there is anybody out there in WyeRiver who would like to organise this event for future years, the Club would be very gratefulto hear from you and give you our support.I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Nolans for their past support andwish Jack a full recovery I

Active Membership'I would like to thank Steve Rumble for all the work he has done taking on the dual roles ofClub Captain and Chief Instructor. Steve has gained the support of all the active membersand has set a high standard of training and fitness for all club members and trainees, keeping the public safe at Wye River during patrol hours.Camival Competition:This year it was good to see a squad of Wye River members training on the beach forcompetition at carnivals. Under the guidance of Steve Thompson and Shane O'Brien, theClub has participated at many Carnivals and as a result have gained a lot of invaluableexperience. Participation is important and we should all feel extremely proud of theseactive participants. Wye River was represented very strongly at both restricted carnivalsand a list of results follows further in this Annual Report.Club Championships:Congratulations to all Club Champion winners. (A full report on champions can be foundfurther in this Annual Report). I believe that the Club Championships, held in January, wererun most professionally, and I was both proud and pleased to see the standard and thenumber of Club Members competing on the day.IN SUMMARY:As earlier stated my commitments do not allow me to accept a committee position for thiscoming term. Once again I wish to very sincerely thank my committees over the past fourseasons for their professional attitude and continual help and support. I can only hope thatthe incoming President and his/her committee gain and maintain the same assistance andco-operation as I have had during my term of office

t have always been extremely proud of Wye River Surf Lifesaving Club - in fact it hasplayed a large and integral part In both my life and that of my family I will continue to servethe Club and offer my positive assistance and support to the incoming committee andmembers at all times.

SECRETARY'S REPORTIiwas with slight trepidation that ! agreed to run for the position of Secretary forthe 1993~94 season, but on reflection I have found it to be a rewarding andinteresting year The experience has given me a greater insight into how ourclub is runThe Club has continued to have a healthy membership this season and it iscommendable to see that we have such an interest and commitment from somany of our "young adult" members; the future leaders of our Club andCommittee.I feel however, that there is stil! a lack of communication between various levelsof membership. If the club is to look forward to continued success, thesecommunication problems need to be addressed by all members and not thesame few peopleI would like to prompt everyone that people who are elected to committeepositions always require support and co-operation from other members.Due to work commitments. I will not be standing for Secretary for anotherseason. As ! said earlier it has been an Interesting year and I wish the newSecretary al! the best. and continued success for the Club

CLUB CAPTAIN'S REPORTAfter what has been personally, a very hectic season, I would like to thank allactive members and committee for their work and support in the completion ofanother summer of patrols at Wye River. I'm pleased to note that there were noserious injuries on a patrolled Wye River beach this year and count this as ameasure of a successful season. After what initially appeared to be a small list ofpatrolling members with only 38 people requalifying their Bronze Medallion, ourpatrol strength was bolstered by four new members early in the season andanother 8 through our traditional January squad. Along with members in otheraward classifications, we had a total of 56 people who attended patrols, a verypleasing result. Congratulations and thanks must go to Damon Barbante for 100patrol hours completed, including numerous voluntary and fill-in patrols. We weregenerally able to maintain patrol numbers well over the minimum staterequirements, however the early and late periods of the season are stili a concern. It is vital that we improve in this area. I would also like to see people attendingtheir own patrols so as to help build a team structure and a close patrol unit. The Club Championships this year took on a new and improved look with theintroduction of a new set of competition rules, bringing the championships into linewith the national competition. Thanks to Steve and Shane for their work on thisand their organisation of the championships weekend. Congratulations also to thewinners in all categories and to all members who took part and helped make it asuccessful weekend. The IRS team have also had their successes this year, with the highlight a fourthplace and $200 prize money at the Moomba IRB special event. They have alsobeen attacking the regular carnivals with renewed vigour and a few new teammembers Congratulations to Jason and his team.Unfortunately, the tin rattles in Melbourne and Geelong were not well attended.however due to the considerable efforts of those present we were able to maintainthe level of donations that we have become used to over past seasons. M y thanksto al! those involved. I t was also a difficult task getting people to do crayfish raffles, but again, due to the work of a small group of members led by Rex we were ableto maintain our fundraising levels in this area.I am disappointed that we were unable to purchase new rescue boards and skisthis year with funds being channelled into the bunkhouse, but hopefully over thenext couple of seasons, with increased space in the clubhouse and the availablefunds, we can offer enough boards and skis to cover patrol and member trainingrequirements. Also, with the introduction of a competition equipment contract theremay be a decrease in the demands on patrol equipment. Together with this I hopethat with the assistance of all club members and the new bunkhouse facilities wewill have for season 94/95 we can build a more stable membership base andcontinue to have successes in all aspects of Surf Lifesaving.

    CHIEF INSTRUCTOR'S REPORT

Our total of 27 awards gained this season, although down on the past couple ofyears did not show any decrease in the number of Bronze Medallions gained. It ispleasing to see that we are able to maintain this level of new membership throughthe recruitment of friends and camp residents. However it is becoming increasinglyimportant with our ever increasing patrol responsibilities that all members becomeactively involved in membership recruitment and training. It is therefore theresponsibility of existing patrol members to improve and maintain their lifesavingskills by either presenting for new awards themselves or by passing on theirknowledge and skills to new members.I would like to congratulate all members who gained awards, especially theJanuary Bronze squad who put in 2 weeks of hard work, culminating in asuccessful exam at Apollo Bay. It was pleasing to see the enthusiasm of everyone of these new members and I hope that they can maintain this enthusiasm overmany years with Wye River. Special thanks to Diana and Jason for their help withthe squad and also to Shane and Steve who trained four of our new members.

IRB CAPTAIN'S REPORTThe 1993-94 season got off to a good start with four people gaining their driverqualifications last July. Congratulations to Brendan Jowett, Ben Storey, ShaneO'Brien and Steve Thompson. This summer was very successful as far as not having to perform any really majorrescues in the IRS. Unfortunately the sand banks which were present for most ofthe summer made launching of the boat difficult and subsequently we had a fewmore repairs than expected in the shallow water. In February, an IRB training seminar was held at Wye River and three membersobtained their driver certificates. Congratulations to Ben Griffin, Damon Barbanteand Donald Pentz.A small group of members competed at a special series of IRS races held atMoomba and we were successful in winning $200 for the Club. It was the firsttime that such an event has been undertaken. and given the response of thecrowd. hopefully it will become an annual event. The IRS carnival season commenced earlier this year and to this point. we havecompeted in two carnivals. We have not won any events as yet, but we arecurrently placed fifth in the State. We hope to attend the Australian Titles thisyear at Freshwater Creek in New South Wales.
