Those in attendance at the September 18 Delegate's Meeting witnessed a truly exceptional event, when the Musials and the Bottas, representing the 26th National Square Dance Convention

presented your Association with a check for $1,743.24. This was a return of the sum raised by the NNJSDA-sponsored Booster Dance. In addition to this check, they presented another, for $500, for Education in our area. Other groups who were beneficiaries of this largess were the Round Dance Leaders Council and the Callers Council.

This "return" of monies previously presented was all the more gratify-ing because it was unexpected. All right, so the Association raised dol-lars for the 26th, but our contribution did not obligate the Convention Management in any way.

As we are all aware, the NNJSDA's contribution did not center on dollars and cents - our 1,000 workers, plus also made a considerable contribtuion in time and effort, to the success of the 26th.

That the Atlantic City Convention was well managed is obvious. We are now benefitting from the sound fiscal policies followed. The transfer of funds from one organization to another, and then back to the first group, indicates that both we, and the Federation of Delaware Valley Square and Round Dancers, want to be good neighbors, and underscores the fact that "Friendship is Square Dancing's Greatest Reward."

CIRCLE EIGHTS -- Tenafly, N.J. 4th Friday November-Reformed ChurATniington Ave,Cresskill,NJ

We're holding our opening dance of this 1977-78 season in November in Cresskill with Bob Mitchell on squares and the Tirrells on rounds. But don't for one minute think our club has been idle. In September many of us were dancing at the Big "D" Weekend in Deposit, NY run by Doc & Peg with John Kaltenthaler & Chip Hendrickson on squares. It may have rained all weekend, but it didn't dampen our spirits one iota. Then in October we again weekended it, this time at Round Top (Winter Clove), NY with Mike Cleary on squares & the Tirrells on rounds. Wonder what the weather will be like when we return in the Spring?

Remember our December dance is cancelled due to the holidays. So we'll take this opportunity to wish you all happy holidays. Remember, Christmas is like a kiss, it has to be shared to be enjoyed.

COLONIAL SQUARES -- Clark, N.J. every Thursday Karumpf S-C7h-o67-, Mildred Terrace

The cover of the Fail issue of GRAND SQUARE featured the line, "Open A New Door To Fun - Learn to Square Dance." Under the expert tutelage of

our own "Master of Challenge", Lee Kopman, new and prospective Colonial Squares members are having their eyes opened to a whole new style of square dancing at an advanced level - Colonial Squares style.

We are sorry to learn that Don Collins prolonged illness has caused Betty Collins to stop cueing the rounds at our weekly dances. We miss you Betty & Don! Let's give the "red badge of courage" to club members Tom & Pat Cribbin for volunteering to take over the rounds. Good going, Tom & Pat!

In September Lee was calling at the Delaware Valley Association Conven-tion in Philadelphia and a large contingent from Colonial Squares followed him to the City of Brotherly Love. Tim Scholl from Easton, PA filled in for Lee at our regular dance and did a nice job. Thanksgiving will soon be here but we are sure that Colonial Squares members won't have too much trouble working off those extra calories. Lee's active pace and great variety of square dance moves will surely burn off more than a few pounds that might accumulate. Come to think of it, its the most enjoyable diet in town! reporters - Bob/Louise Benner 201-548-8594

COUNTRY PROMENADERS -- Edison, N.J. 2 & 4 Saturdays Clara Barton School-1015 Amboy Road

Our new season opened with a bang. We had 17 squares

Year going at one time, besides spectators and "resters". (Our hall is large, so there was no crowding.)

The highlight of the evening was a visit from a group of Senior Citizens who were invited to try square dancing, during the Treasurer's Break. They seemed to enjoy themselves very much. Jim Mar-shall sure knows how to make beginners feel confidence in their capabil-ities! We are most grateful to the members of our sister clubs, who at-tended our opening dance and extend our thanks for their support.

Country Promenaders was asked to participate in the Metuchen Fair in October. The theme was "Square Dancing around the World" (with our Sil-ver Jubilee thrown in) and was called by Marty Clifford, who seemed to enjoy the affair as much as the dancers and spectators. Our teens did a splendid job of decorating for the occasion. We look forward to seeing you all at our future dances.

The Last NNJSDA summer dance was extra special. A record number - 85 FREELOADERS were awarded to 1977 graduates who had attended 8 of the 10 Association summer dances. Sussex Spinners, Ocean Waves and the Staten Square Set clubs also gave their club ladies extra special attention with a corsage. Ocean Waves also presented their male winners with boutort.- naires. Overheard at the sign in table, "We came all the way down from Canada to earn this dangle tonight:" Surprisingly enough when President Jim Bates asked how many "Old Timers" besides himself had also attended 8 or more summer dances, about a full square of hands were raised! Remember all you 85 new FREELOADERS - just smile and point to your free-loaders dangle and check off your name when you attend the NNJSDA Special Dances from now thru May 1978 (except the Mini-Festival). Happy dancing.

COVERED BRIDGE SQUARES -- Nutley, N.J. 1 & 3 Mondays St. Paul's Parish House, 642 Franklin Avenue

The flaming colors of autumn make us think of pumpkins, cider, dough-nuts, and hoedowns. The hoedown at Covered Bridge was at its best with Bruce Vertun calling. A good time was had by all. Our summer demos proved to be very successful. We gained many enthusastic students for our new class this season with the very capable teaching of Jules Pozsar. Speaking of demos, we held a 2 day demo at the Hoffman LaRoche Health Fair in Nutley this past month.

We would like to say "thank you" to Helen & Victor Pietrucha who are retiring as our reporters. During their years of reporting we always looked forward to reading their interesting column. Do come and join us for our Turkey Hop and our Christmas Party. See our ad on page 55 for details. reporters - Harriet/Vince Wilding 201-471-6729

CROSS TRAIL SQUARES -- Caldwell, N.J. 2 & 4 Wednesdays Lincoln School, Crane Street Our Tenth Anniversary Year got off to a good start with regular caller

Dick Maddocks, and guests Bob Tarrant & Stan Zaczkowski. Our Class is shaping up very well under the tutelage of Dick and we are expecting a big class of good dancers come Graduation time. Cross Trails started a work-shop in September, conducted by Ron Bessette, and held every Sunday from 7 to 9. Approximately six squares have been turning out to practice up on some of the older calls and to keep well abreast of the newer ones. These sessions have turned out to be not only of great benefit dancing-wise, but tremendous fun too.

Please puck up our flyers and come dance with us often. We love guests! Our next big affair is our Christmas Dance. Hope to see you then! Holiday Greetings go out to each and every one of you from each and every one of us. May you all continue to enjoy the good fellowship of Square Dancing in the coming year. Happy Dancing

DANCING SQUARES -- Cranford, N.J. 1 & 3 Saturdays Bloomingdale Avenue School

We opened the season with 16 squares in attendance at our first dance in September. Our open house in October attracted 18 squares with many interested newcomers. Many of these new people started lessons with Bob Kellogg at Terrill Jr. High in Cranford. Round Dance lessons also began in October with Bob & Jean on Thursday evenings.

After much travel this summer, quite a few Rover Badges are being worn by our members. We are all looking forward to a banner year. Why not come dance with us - first & third Saturdays. Sit down refreshments after the dance. reporters - Selma/Art Perlstein 201-964-0740

GARDEN STATE SQUARE DANCE CAMPERS

Extending our season into May and October was a most successful experi-ment. We all enjoyed those extra weekend of camping - but maybe next year something could be done about the weather! Our big event was the wedding and reception of two of our members - Pam Blanchard & Jack Tomchick. We wish them much happiness together. Now our members are eagerly looking forward to the annual dinner in January. ..this is also when our new officers take over. reporters - Betty/Dennis Ford 201-635-2383

GRAND PROWLERS -- Parsippany, N.J. 1 & 3 Saturdays Brook lawn Jr. High; Beechwood Road & Route 202

Our September opening dance saw the very welcome return of Will Larsen. We had a wonderful evening with this talented young caller. This was fol-lowed by another excellent dance with one of our favorites - Clint McLean. Two Grand Prowlers - Pam Blanchard 8. Jack Tomchick are forgiven for not attending that dance. They had two good excuses. One, it was their wed-ding day. Two, they were holding their own wedding square dance reception. Our fondest best wishes to Pam & Jack for a long and happy life together. You can't miss if you keep dancing!

This year the Grand Prowlers will be sweet sixteen...be on the lookout for flyers announcing a special celebration dance. Meanwhile, we cordially dially invite one and all to our dances this season. Don't ley bad weath-er scare you - we're just a stone's throw from route 1-80. And, we've a great and different quest caller at each dance. Round dancers will be happy to know that Grace & Walt Pennie are cueing the rounds. Come join us for good fun on a Saturday night!

HANOVER SQUARES -- Whippany., N.J. 2 & 4 Fridays Salem Drive School

Here we are just two months into the Square Dancing Season and what a

great two months Hanover has had. At our Open House in September we had a total of 14 squares, of which 5 were club members that came to welcome the prospective dancers. At this writing we are three weeks into our fun sessions, and we still have 9 squares of happy beginners, With this many squares, Dick Maddocks needs all the Angels he can get to help out, so all members are asked to continue their support and come on Monday nights and be an Angel.

Our dance with Glenn Cooke was also a huge success with better than 24 squares, and everyone there had a great time. Then on September 30 at the Association Dance, Hanover came out strong with 22 couples. With this kind of interest and involvement by club members, Hanover is on its way to being one of the best clubs in New Jersey. So let's keep supporting our officers, who are giving it their all to make Hanover number one.

I'm sure -everyone remembers the picnic held in May and the good time that was had by both the young and old. By the time you read this, Han-over's Fall Picnic will have been held and I'm sure our chairpersons, Jim & Agnes will be receiving compliments on that affair. It's not too early to be thinking about New Years Eve and the good time that was had last year. So line up your babysitter and sign up for a good time this New Years Eve. This year Ron Bessette, from Texas, will be our caller.

That's it for now, and Audrey and I hope to be squaring up with all of you in the near future. "FFF" to all of you.

HIX & CHIX Paramus, N.J. every Thursday - year round K of C HaZZ, Bridle Way

Our Open House was a rousing success with the results being about five squares in our class which started in October under the able direction of Mike Foley. Also a delightful evening was spent with Manny Amor in Sept. Many thanks to all who helped on our Pot Luck Supper. The food and friend-ly faces of our S/D's combined to make it a huge success. Several couples from Hix & Chix attended LUST and found it to be a worthy project. It is a fine opportunity to compare ideas on how a S/D club ticks.

We now have a raid committee and by the time this is printed we will have been to Kuntry Kuzn's. So watch out guys, your club may be next. Happy Holidays. reporters-Ellen Allison 265-7642;Bob Hansen 201-796-2833

CALLERS — to clarify some of the more complicated figures with just a few people looking for extra help without having to get a demonstration square together. A real boon to the caller wanting to work out new ideas. TEACHERS — to more clearly show just how a call is to be danced without depending entirely on vocal instructions to novice dancers. A valuable supplement for new classes. ALL LEVEL DANCERS — to work out the call you just learned or one you want to recall and settle more firmly in mind. The pieces may be moved as in a game of solitaire or with just you and your partner or any size group gathered around a flat surface. By using just one game piece you can test your own ability and understanding of current calls by ending in the correct position, facing in the right direction. KIT CONSISTS OF: A set of 8 matched hardwood dancer figures (4 boys and 4 girls) with magnetic bases that will hold position on any steel surface such as ordinary TV tray tables. Instructions and coloring materials to designate partners and corners at a glance. A two color, 12" square layout in durable coated material, significantly numbered for positive po-sitioning and facing direction. Self-examination test on the basic movements and work-sheets for developing new ideas PRICE: (Including postage and handling) $7.95

our 15 (that's right, count 'em) years since our club's inception, and we want all our friends to come to our Anniversary Dance in January with the great Glenn Cooke calling. HI TAW TWIRLERS -- Pearl River N.Y. 1,2,3,5 Tuesdays; 4 Wednesday Franklin Avenue School

As we begin to enter the holiday season, we can look back at the great dances that have been held this fall. Even the sudden change of location of our Oct. 4 dance did not dampen the enthusiasm of our dancers. It did appear as if our president and vice-president had joined the picket line at Franklin School when in reality their sign merely directed the dancers to the new dance location. Our Halloween Dance was a A 0-4 lot of fun and prizes were awarded to many who wore costumes or unusual hats. Al Brundage called this dance and will also be calling our Thanksgiving Eve Dance. We are also looking forward to two special dances in December (see our ad on page :39). At our Dick Jones dance we will feature a fashion show of square dance apparel. Dick Pasvolsky will call our annual Christmas Dance. All of us at Hi Taw wish all of you Happy Holidays and Happy Dancing!

KINGS SQUARES -- King's Plaza, Brooklyn, N.Y. 1 & 3 Tuesdays Community Room Kings Plaza, Fiatbush & Avenue "U"

September found us very busy. We performed at three neighborhood fairs, and a few block parties. Fred Weiner, of Co-op Squares and Tenakill Twi-lighters called at each of these as he has done for us at all our demon-strations this summer. We had audience participation and were sure Fred helped convince many to join our class. The class is in full swing every Thursday at the Fort Hamilton Presbyterian Church. We have a record num-ber of learners squaring to our class caller Frank Riviccio.

In October we held a "Salute to Staten Square Set" as our way of saying THANK YOU for all the help they have been to us. We are offering a variety of mainstream level callers featuring Bruce Vertun. Be sure to pick up one of our flyers and see our ad on page Li-2- Then, come on over to Brooklyn. reporters - Judy/Mike Poretsky

KITTATINNY RANGERS -- Stillwater; N.J. 1 & 3 Wednesdays Stillwater School

Many of our old friends and two callers came to our opening dance. As usual, Dick Pasvolsky called an enjoyable dance and the visiting callers each called a tip. A great start to a good season of dancing ahead.

Another great occurrance was the outstanding Ham Dinner cooked by our Marie Clowater. The dinner was in celebration of our 5th Anniversary. We could not have asked for more. The dinner dance was held at the Christ House in Lafayette which is on one of the highest points in Sussex County. As we relished this delicious dinner, we were able to see the colorful hills and a breathtaking sunset. We then danced in their auditorium, where corsages were presented to the Past Presidents and Vice-Presidents. Badges were also presented to the various committees. Our refreshments were quite good, but the piece-de-resistance was the Anniversary Cake. Made by Marie, but it was decorated by her teenage daughter who did such a beautiful job, one would think she was a professional. All in all, our 5th Anniversary Dance was a huge success. Perhaps we will see* you next year for our anniversary celebration.

Early in October our caller and dancers were ready for the Annual Mill-Brook Days; however, the rains came down both days. In December we will have the distinguished visitor with the White Beard and Red Suit. Come prepared for an enjoyable evening. We exchange gifts, so bring one and join in the fun.

We hope to see you all at one time or another during the season. Happy Holidays and A Healthy Prosperous New Year.

M T SQUARES -- Woodbridge, N.J. 1 & 3 Saturdays School 19, Maryknoll Road, Menlo Park Terrace

The Country Promenaders joined us in a demonstration dance at Menlo Shopping Center in September at which our Bob Benner called for 3 sets. The dance was so successful, Bambergers invited us back for another six dances at•East Brunswick, Plainfield & Menlo. Our new class is well under way, with the new dancers doing nicely. We wish our neighbors, the Country Promenaders a Happy 25th and another Happy Twenty Five.

We've had a good beginning to our 77-78 season with well attended dan-ces. Bruce Busch, recently from Baltimore, called for the special Hallo-ween Dance, where we all had lots of fun. Looking forward to our Novem-ber dance with Bob Tarrant calling. The Dockrys will be seeing more r/d on the floor. The Derns, Lorentz's & Sofields are taking lessons, and the Samsoe's & Garfinkel's are dancing with a new round dance club.

OCEAN WAVES SQUARE DANCE CLUB -- Tottenville, Staten Island, N.Y. 2 & 4 Fridays

Our own Cheery Cleary called a wonderful barn dance before our season started - fun was had by all. Our KICK-OFF dance with Mike again and help-ed us iron out the corners and dust off the cobwebs. It was wonderful see-ing all our friends again....as we did when Frannie Heintz and the Red Bar-on came. Glenn Cooke had to put with all our craziness again at the Hallo-ween dance. With Earl Johnston, Dave Hass, Bob Johnson, Dick Ledger on our line up we have much fun & surprises in store for ail. We are trying diff-erent halls, so please call Herb & Sandy Charatz 212-761-5445 or ourselves for where our friendly club is dancing. The holidays are coming and even New Year is creeping us, but be sure and stop by and dance with us.

PRINCETON SQUARES -- Princeton, N.J. 2 & 4 Fridays Community Park School, Witherspoon Street

Fall is here, and isn't it beautiful weather for dancing? We quickly got into the "swing of the season" with a great first dance by our own "boy wonder" Steve Kopman. We're all very friendly at Princeton, but at this opener two of our couples let us know how friendly they'd become. Announcing their engagements were Paul Bryant and Sharon Kowaleski, and Toni Bolton and David Dickey. We're all very happy for them and wish them all only the best in their lives together.

Were any of you visiting the Quaker Bridge Mall when a large number of Princeton Squares, and our caller for the evening, Bruce Busch, thoroughly enjoyed demonstrating the fun of square dancing to the mall shoppers. Many people expressed an interest in classes. We welcomed many newcomers to our Open House the following Friday evening. Bruce called a dance that succeeded in keeping both the beginners and club members very happy. Four squares of beginners began our classes. We wish them happy dancing and look forward to having them as Princeton Squares members.

At this writing we are anticipating a lot of good dancing in the coming months and are looking forward to three dances with our own Steve Kopman and one with Bill Dann! Should be a good fall. Speaking of Kopmans, the site for our Holiday Fling with Lee Kopman has been set. We'll be at the Princeton Day School. Plan now to come for a great dance. (See page 46)

RAMAPO SQUARES -- Oakland, N.J. 2 4 4 Saturdays Heights School, Seminole Avenue

Our first dance of the season was a great success, due to the lively calling of Cliff Brodeur, and the Gordons on the rounds, substituting for the Tirrells. We were joined by many of our spring graduates, who had workshopped all summer. Bud & Jinny Allison have a good sized beginners' class again this year, and Joe & Laura Fletcher are very capably handling the post graduate Ramapo Club Level Workshops. It looks like a very busy and productive season coming up.

By the time you read this, Ramapo will have had their October Dinner Dance with Steve Kopman calling. We are really looking forward to a de-licious and delightful evening. Hope to see you all at the great dances we have planned with Lee Kopman, Bob Paris and Jerry Schatzer.

Open House this year was a resounding success. The Reelers not only acquired twenty-five new couples for the Wednesday night classes, but had a record number of club members turning out to welcome, demonstrate, and otherwise contribute to a very happy night of dancing. We thank Bob Tar-rant for pinch-hitting that evening. Wilson is back to teaching now, and the class is progressing nicely.

A "welcome back" to Moira Zweibel who spent two wonderful weeks in Ireland visiting her mother and family. There are quite a few of us who would have loved to join her...maybe next year! And another "welcome back" to John and Laura Schoebel. John, who had been quite ill, looked just great - we're so glad he's back to dancing!

The Reelers' new Historian is Dave Manning, a member well qualified t for the honored office. Betty & Dave are charter members of the club, Betty having been its first secretary. The Mannings even held club class meetings and a few picnics at their home a few years back. Raid chairmen, Art & Ellen Gee, tell us this will be a raid-filled year for the Reeiers. We're looking forward to seeing all of you, our club friends, on our travels. reporters - Norm/Frances Fowler 201-584-9466

RICHMOND DANCERS -- Castleton Corners, Staten Island, N.Y. 2 & 4 Saturdays St. John's Lutheran Church, 663 Manor Road Despite hurricane-like weather, our premier dance of the season was a

huge success. Nearly 20 squares enjoyed the great calling of Marty ford. After a tip or two, all of those who had become a little rusty dur-ing the summer became unlimbered and dot back into the mainstream (+1) of things. This was our "Desert Dance" and all those in attendance enjoyed wonderful cakes and pies baked by our members. The children at Willow-brook Developmental Center shared in the huge quantities of left-overs.

Our October dance featured Steve Kopman who introduced us to his de-lightful fiance, Debbie. The Bellottis "rounded" out the evening. Dave Platt called our second October dance. In November we will have Ralph Trout and John Cleary. Visitors are always welcome.

CONGRATULATIONS!! !

TO OUR LATEST PATRON COUPLE DIANE 8 DICK TOOTHILL of Somerset Hills Squares (who began visitations 4/16/77 8, finished 9/17/77!!!

PATRON /I

The PATRONS program is 10 years old, having its beginning when Al/Susie Nilson 6 Les/Marjie Davis both danced with every member club (25) in 34 months. Since that time 122 patrons awards have been made. The Sydors were the next couple to fulfill the requirements with Tenakill Twirlers the first club to have two couple (McCutcheons,Schmitz) win this award in 1969. Sussex Spinners has had 36 members qualify (26 of them have also been FREELOADERS!); Covered Bridge had 13 Patrons all in one year (1976): With our latest two couples, Covered Bridge has now 15 and Somerset Hills has 14. Wonder who will be next to dance with 26 member clubs on their regular dance night to their regular club caller (if they have one).

IseL Rid SEE SAW SQUARES -- Pearl River, N.Y.

1 & 3 Saturdays Lincoln Avenue School

The curtain rose on another season as old friends, once again experien-ced the firm handshake and the warm embrace of reunion with those they had not seen during the summer. Jules Pozsar called the squares & the Shear-woods handled the rounds at our Open House which was well attended and toroughly enjoyed by those who came to be introduced to the pleasures of square dancing. It will be interesting to see whether or not those who came to "see and saw" were conquered, or just too mesmerized to pick up the gauntlet and join the maddening crowd of happy, square dancing enthus-iasts. The changing of the guard has taken place and our new officers are Pres. Andre/Joan Brillaud; VP Colin/Anne Killian; Sec. Bob/Rosemarie Whit-more; Tres. John/Tita Stankevich.

Andrew Macleod has come thru surgery with flying colors and Ed Haines continues to improve. It just proves what T.L.C. can do for men who need a woman's touch. No doubt it was men of their sterling character that inspired the immortal Robert Burns to write the unforgettable words of Auld Lang Syne. Our friends, August & Ruth Semendinger traveled to Austria Hungary, Yugoslavia, Greece and Turkey during the summer. That wonderful trip should warrant at least five dangles of interesting design. Norman & Hilda Berger vacationed in Greece & Italy where they visited many histori-cal places of interest. They consulted the oracle at Delphi & now stand ready to answer any and all questions. Hilda will teach a course in Folk Art this semester at R.C.C.

We notice that our current ad reverts the schedule to its original time slots with round dancing from 8:00 to 8:30 and square dancing from 8:30 to 11:00. Please mark your schedules accordingly.

The new dancing season is well underway and it's good to see so many of last spring's graduates. It's clear that many were dancing all summer. Our dances have been aimed at the Mainstream Plus One level and Carl Hanks is gradually introducing new calls to raise the level to Mainstream Plus Two during the season. Grace & Walt Pennie cue the round dancers. We're

always delighted to have visitors from other clubs and if you are one of the few who have never danced with us, be sure to save the published map.

A special with Al Brundage and a Two-Fer with Glenn Cooke and Carl Hanks are highlights of November and we are looking forward to our annual New Years Eve party with Hill City. An enthusiastic contingent of more than 20 couples raided Hanover Squares in October, danced to the calls of Jerry Schatzer, and enjoyed an after-party at the home of Diane & Dick Toothill. We've missed Barbara Hoff and Virginia Kenney at recent dances - both ladies are recovering from accidents. We hope they'll soon be back.

Bob Tarrant has started another class. Twenty couples meet every Thursday and our Vice-Presidents, the Belzes, Stines & Richards, help everything go smoothly.

With the holiday season appraoching, we wish you all a Happy Thanksgiv-ing, Happy Chanukah, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Delightful Dan-cing. reporters - Marti/Dave DeGraaf 201-543-2795

STATEN SQUARE SET -- Elm Park Staten Island N.Y. 1 & 3 Satur s St. A ert s Ha 1, 363 Mormngstar Road 90

If in this world we look to the century milestone as a mark of achieve-ment, then 200 must be a doubly high accomplishmnet. It is therefore with great pride that we honor our own MANNY AMOR for CALLING HIS 200th CLUB LEVEL DANCE for STATEN SQUARE SETS on Oct. I, 1977. Jackie Amor was the honorary chairperson, and her theme was one of nostalgia - a this is your life theme. Instead of the individual appearing after Manny guesses the voice on the tape, he was awarded a prize. Of course, everything was in units of 200. 200 pennies (Manny saves pennies), 200 pieces of gum (he chews for relaxation), etc. We even had better than 30 squares, which translates to better than 240 people.

Manny was surprised when he was asked to relinquish the microphone & to join a square. We then played a ten year old tape, while Manny danced to himself. Under noraml circumstances, the caller is quietly given his pay. Tonight however, we had to carry out a bit of the bizarre. The pay-masters (Ray & Sandy LaVigne) litterly carted in a sack containing 200

silver dollars. The first dance of any season is always a double pleasure. The thrill

of getting back into the swing of the season, renewing acquaintances away for the summer, etc. At Staten, we had a special reason. Manny Amor has always made dancing a special pleasure. We owe him our heartfelt thanks -not only for the success of our club, but for living our club motto - "We Dance For Fun and Friendship". Thank you Manny. reporters - Joan/Don Abramson 609-443-3054

TENAKILL TWIRLERS -- Cresskill, N.J. 3rd Friday Bryan School, Brookside Avenue

With a regretful look backwards at a super summer and a happy look for-ward to a promising winter, we squared up in September to a delightful dance with Bob Johnson. He'll be back in November. With John Kaltentha-ler calling in October and December, all the fall dances are sure to be great fun. See our flyer for the goodies for the rest of the year.

Incredible as it may seem, by the time this issue is out, it will be time to think about making reservations with Peg Tirrell for the New Years Eve Dance.

Square dancing is certainly growing. More and more new dancers are seen and the courses must be excellent because they seem to get right into the swing of things. Our own Jody Bromberg continues to contribute to this trend and has a promising class going again this year. So come join us at

Bryan School. Rounds at 8 PM with Doc S. Peg Tirrell, Squares at 8:30 and Folk Dances courtesy of Jody Bromberg.

(continued from page 23 - CROWD) List specific cities where you would like to dance. Allow three weeks for a reply. Please provide sufficient return postage as Steve & Fran are retired folks. No requests will be answered in August when they plan THEIR own

vacation. CROWD is now, has always been, and will always be a free ser-vice. All Steve & Fran ask is that it does not cost them anything but time...they look forward to serving you again. If you haven't time to write them, contact the Tirrells and perhaps they can help out. Have fun:

THE SQUARE i'INCUSHION

looks at the versatile GORE...

Take a good look...basically these are all made from the same simple design-the gore. Some use 8 or 12 or even 16 gores. Narrow at the tops 4" or 5" or 6", tapered to a generous hemline of 12" or 15" or what suits your fabric or your particular choice.

Short gores with the addition of a flounce or ruffle....long gores left plain or a

bit of trim( a few rows of rickrack or braid) or some appliques, or a couple of rows of narrow ruffles set on top....or a double gore full-length set in center front with short gores with a flonce or ruffle for the rest....add a bodice or a waist-band or a bib top or pinafore top or a jumper top and prestol so many outfits all from one basic gore

Let your imagination soar, with this the easiest and most flattering of skirt styles No need to purchase a patt- 41. ern....make several gores in assorted widths and lenghts for future reference; make them of newspaper and note the different sizes in colors red for one, blue for another, etc. Slip them into a plastic bag and file with your patterns, then when you're ready to design a new dress your patterns are all ready to go Try it and see how easy it is!!!

NO NEW MOVEMENTS. This would November and December, 1977.

There was a strong feeling among many committee members that the Third Quarter selections of Follow Your Neighbor and Follow Your Neighbor and Spread have not been workshopped sufficiently at Mainstream Club level since thay came during the summer months when there is a minimum of work-shop activity. The recommendation of the committee is that these two movements continue to be workshopped and reviewed.

AL"e"MO SQUARES -- Brooklyn, N.Y„ every Monday Emmanuel Episcopal Church-2637 E. 23rd St,

A wonderful world of square dancing has come to Brooklyn with the star-ting of another brand new club. We were happy to see the nice turnout of beginners all ready and willing to learn the do si do at our free lesson. Our thanks and appreciation to all the angels who came to help out.

Advanced level workshop meets every Monday. First lessons had them "mark time" "follow your neighbor" with a "touch of class" which they all enjoyed...also a promise from the caller to "keep them busy" with new calls every week. Thursday night will be a club level workshop for all new graduates to continue learning new calls and review old ones. Al I dancers are welcome. All angels from the Monday class are invited free of charge on Thursday.

We want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very nice holiday. Happy Thanksgiving, Hanukkah,Merry Christmas and a Happy Healthy New Year. Enjoyable dancing always. reporter - Edith Moses 212-336-1731

KUNTRY KUZN'S -- Franklin, N.J. 1 & 3 Saturdays Presbyterian Church, Main Street Here it is another season of music, good callers, and a host of warm

people filled with laughter, joy and hospitality. Our family of Kuzn's hope those that attended our Vice Presidents Special found that find of pleasure at our dance. We gave all the VP's who attended that evening a small momento honoring the occasion. Jean Elrod had a fashion show that evening and the Kuzn's modeled many of her pretty dresses, shirts along with Alice Vealy of the Sussex Spinners and Ruth & Bill Huebner VP's of Kittatinny Rangers. We've planned a bus trip for the 9th annual Fall Festival of the NEPSDA at Clark Summit, PA.

The last information I would like to share with you all is we had 3 squares of Kuntry Kuzn's at Big "D" this year. And as usual we had a great time. The rain didn't dampen the enjoymant at all. Next year is going to be more fun and enjoyment - our own Bob Mitchell is calling with John Kaltenthaler and Chip Hendrickson and rounds with Peg & Doc Tirrell. When Herb Arkin was in Washington, DT------froi77WEE43ii business, he decided to do a little lobbying for the

NATIONAL SQUARE VANCE BILL. Here is what he found out - There are 3 House Joint Resolutions to make the S/D the official National Dance. They are H.J. Res. 398,444 &

461. This is not unusual so he was told. These bills are stuck in the Census & Population Subcommittee of the Post Office & Civil Service Com-mittee. When enough Congressmen CO-SPONSOR these bills, one summary bill will be presented to the floor. In summary, if we are interested in ma- king the S/D the US National Dance, each one of us MUST write our congress-man and request that they CO-SPONSOR the bill. Start writing - NOW

STAN'S PATRIOTIC SQUARES -- Bloomfield, N.J. 2 & 4 Tuesdays Hill Top Barn - 1640 Broad Street

Happy Holidays to all you dancers. All of us enjoyed our third annual Pocono weekend at the historical Henryville House. All who attended en-joyed the dancing and games - we are all looking forward to next year. Stan Zaczkowski and the Patriotic Squares enjoyed many tours with their float and giving demonstrations at the Bloomfield Green, Clifton Country Fair & the CROP Walkathon in Bloomfield. They were all crowd pleasers & it was great to see so many non dancers join in.

Congratulations to Jack & Pam Tomchick on their recent marriage. We all wish them much love and happiness. Come one and all join in on our fun and dancing. reporters - Gail/Stephen Rawcliffe 201-675-6020

ptom the deck oti Sita 6 Gabe Dett'Angeto How very often, a most exhilerating experience is only a phone call

away and so it was, when the Staten Square Set was asked to partici- pate in the II International Congress Alumni, Sisters of St. Dorothy (a teaching order with thousands of alumni throughout the world). Six coun-tries would entertain, the "Congress", meeting for a week long seminar, at the Statler Hilton in Manhattan. Would the Staten Square Set represent the United States with a square dancing demonstration in a "FOLKLORE FES- TIVAL"??? Most assuredly, and with great pleasure!! Of course, Manny Amor agreed to call; prepared a program for our segment of the show; and made several trips from Lakewood to Staten Island for rehearsals.

On July 30, three squares of beautifully, color-coordinated, costumed dancers set forth on an adventure that has become a most cherished memory.

The "Congress" was attended by delegates and their families from nine countries; and performing in the "folklore musical" were groups from Switzerland, Portugal, Malta, Italy, Brazil, and the United States. The director of the entertainment decided, quite unexpectedly, and to our sur-prise, that it would be impressive to have the origin of our dance explain-ed in different languages. Sila Dell'Angelo agreed to do it in Italian; Hedda Alwworth in German & Phil Alsworth translated into English.

Mlle demonstration was introduced..."Il nostro balletto "folkforico" e una quadriglia press da tanti paesi...etc." and "Unser tanz ist entnomen von volkstanzen verschiedener lander, deren immigranten in die Vereinigten Staaten Eingewandert rind and brachten die basis fur unseren quadrat tanz..." and "Our dance is ierived from the folk dances of many countries, whose immigrants to the States brought with them the basis for our square dances... And then, Manny "ring-a-dinged" us into "Yankee Doodle Dandy", "Summer Sounds", "Ma, She's Making Eyes at Me", with Venus and Mars movements, and "Happy Days Are Here Again". The applause was overwhelming and left no doubt that this was the highlight of the evening. The show came to a close with all participating countries on stage, joined by a group of children singing "It's a Small World", each in their native tongue: English, Maltese, German, Italian and Portuguese. We all experienced the thrill of pride, in our country and in this wonderful activity, with which we were able to reach out to share, with so many, the warmth and joy of square dancing.

Bravissimo! Wunderbar!!!
