INTRODUCTION• It’s an understatement to say that the 70s fashion

styles were a bit far out.• But for those of us who wore them, they were

the ultimate in groovy fashion!• Wild prints, shoes that added 5 inches to your

height, polyester suits, short shorts that left little to the imagination, and skirts in three distinctly different lengths were just part of the 70s fashion fare. Indeed, the 70s had it all!

• Though some 70s fashion trends carried over from the 1960s, including bell bottom pants and tie-dyed shirts, many new styles were distinctly 70s.

• And those of us who grew up during the era took our cues from those we saw on both the little screen and the big screen. Every teen wanted a mini dress like Marcia Brady’s and young men admired John Travolta’s gleaming white three-piece Saturday Night Fever suit. Nothing was too gaudy for the 70s!

70s TREND 70s Skirt • Dresses and skirts now came in three lengths

– the traditional mini, the new midi – which landed between the knee and the ankle, and the maxi, which reached to the floor.

• Coats came in the same lengths so that women could coordinate their outfits. Maxi skirts and long “granny” dresses were especially popular for formal events.

70s Pants• However, the ladies also sported “hip huggers”, jeans that

sat several inches below the normal waistline. These jeans were often tight and their owners were eager to decorate them with

• Men, similarly, weren’t adverse to wearing tight jeans and trousers, too. Velvet or lame pants weren’t unusual either.

• Later in the decade, leisure suits – fashioned from a variety of colors of polyester fabric ranging from baby blue and mint green to brown – were all the rage and were a trend most agree need not ever be repeated.

• Also in the late 1970s, both men and women squeezed into jumpsuits, one-piece outfits that zipped up the front and were usually worn with a wide belt.!

70s Shirts• Men of the 70s wore shirts in solids and loud

prints with long, pointed collars. The print shirts were often paired with the aforementioned leisure suits.

• Ladies shirts ran the gamut from peasant-style, flowy tops that had become popular in the late 1960s to skimpy halter tops that were pared with equally-skimpy shorts known as hot pants. Sequined bra tops were also a common trend and, later, tube tops – a strapless sleeve of stretchy fabric that pulled over the head and covered the upper torso – were all the rage.

70s Accessories• In the 70s, traditional belts were often replaced

by beads or handmade macramé creations. Large peace sign necklace or surfer’s crosses were worn around the neck on heavy chains.

• But the most notable accessory of the 70s had to be the platform shoe. Worn by women of all ages and some men as well.

• Many of them were fashioned in wild prints, some were glittery, and others were even transparent.

1970s MODELS• In the 1970s, models were elevated to an even higher place in

American culture as many of them achieved “supermodel” status.

• In fact, it was during the 1970s that the term “supermodel” was coined and tacked onto women who were becoming household names thanks to their stunning good looks and the power of advertising.

• During the 70s, fashion magazines were as popular as ever and the world’s best models were seen in 70s mags like Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Elle, and several others.

• Hence, even more models became household names and they began receiving contracts that were rivaling those received by actors and sports icons.

• In fact, in the mid 1970s, Margaux Hemingway became the first model to receive a million dollar contract from a fragrance company.

Hippie Fashion in the 70sThe free-flowing hippie fashion of the 1970s reflected the youth culture’s response to the strict mores and conservative values of the 1950s and 1960s. Defined by their carefree and laid-back attitude, hippies adopted a more eclectic, leisurely style that symbolized peace, love and equality for all. Entertainers like Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane and Cher popularized hippie fashions that blended ethnic garments, colorful patterns and loose-fitting clothing. All this made the hippie look one of the most recognizable trends of the 1970s.Shoes and AccessoriesPlatform shoes were a staple of the 1970s. The shoes ranged in height from a. The popular jewelry of the time was inspired by nature or handmade Native American designs. Necklaces featured beads, peace signs, flowers, pendants and bells. Friendship bracelets also became popular. The woven bracelets made with colorful yarn were easy to replicate and share. Hair accessories included printed bandanas, thin headbands and flower crowns.

70’s MOVIES• 1970s opened with Hollywood experiencing a financial and artistic depression• The hippie movement, the civil rights movement, free love, the growth of rock and roll, changing

gender roles and drug use certainly had an impact• And Hollywood was renewed and reborn with the earlier collapse of the studio system, and the

works of many new and experimental film-makers during a Hollywood New Wave. • In the mid-1970s, romantic confections made way for gritty, violent films about gangsters and

bandits.• Hindi filmmakers such as Shyam Bengal continued to produce realistic Parallel Cinema

throughout the 1970s

70s: Bollywood Fashion TrendsSince its inception, Bollywood has been a major inspiration for the ever-changing fashion industry and the 70s really brought about a fashion evolution in the country

Bell bottomsThe flared, oversized bell bottoms trousers were a rage during the 70s representing the relaxed and tranquil atmosphere of the times. Bell bottoms were popular both amongst the men and women alike. While men opted to pair them with suit jackets, women preferred to tuck them in with trendy and flowy tops. Be it Zeenat Aman swaying to the beats of  "Hare Rama Hare Krishna" or Amitabh Bachchan in Trishul, bell bottoms was flaunted by one and all in the industry.

Polka dots A massive hit, especially amongst the women, polka dotted blouses where a highlight of 70s fashion. Usually the deep necked or midriff baring dotted blouses were paired with short skirts or bell bottoms. Who can forget Dimple Kapadia donning the black and white blouse in Bobby? Hair

An array of hairdos were a common sight in Bollywood films during the 1970s. At times, the actresses would be seen flaunting their long luscious hair and the next second trimming it to a short bob cut. All thanks to the popular use of wigs during the time. Puffed up high hair, exaggerated buns and varied sized bangs were the most favored; often accessorized with bright neon colored ribbons, these wigs added glamour to the look. Our tinsel town men weren't far behind in the race either with long sleek hair and side burns running as long as the guns they fired. Sunglasses

Did you think big sunglasses are a thing of today? Well, you're mistaken then. Big glares have been in vogue since the 70s. Even today big eye wears with designing on the rim and studded with crystals are in much demand like they were when fashion icon Zeenat Aman effortlessly flaunted them. Be it white, red or any other bright color, all of these were an instant hit!
