Foreword 1968 has been a year of change: Albe
marle has a new student ·body, several new courses and textbooks, and even new senior privileges. Perhaps the most farreaching change is the unification of Albemarle with Burley and Scottsville High Schools , an enrichment to our school. This merger added 210 Burley students and 98 Scottsville students to the student body of Albemarle.
Careful preparation was made to insure that the new students would feel welcome at Albemarle. Mr. Hurt and Pat Fleshman, an Albemarle senior, talked with the student body at Burley in order to increase the understanding between our students. To strenghten the SCA, four Burley students and two Scottsville students were invited to be representatives. Last May many of these students attended ciasses at Albemarle . This orientation enabled the students to feel more a part of Albemarle.
This year Albemarle is in the final stages of its transition from a five-year high school to a three-year high school because of the construction of new junior high schools. Last year a small group of eighth graders was admitted to Albemarle , and this group will continue here , so that next year Albemarle will be a three-year high school.
Albemarle has expanded its curricula in many subjects. Among the newer courses are data processing, advanced French and Spanish classes, calculus, music appreciation , and a history seminar. In addition, all English , social studies, and languages textbooks are new.
Senior privileges at Albemarle have been increased, allowing the students more freedom. In addition to leaving the auditorium first and having Senior Day, seniors may leave classes two minutes early to go to lunch, and select their own parking spaces.
Dedication
Something very thrilling, young, and alive comes out around him . All the restrai nts , confusions , prejudices, and fears which chase learning into a corner seem irrelevant in the smooth , logical flow of his classes, a current which goes anywhere , which sparkles with humor, a current which does not have to be called Wind, River, Train , or Teaching. Some-
thing universal is rediscovered each time he speaks to us. Rio , Mexico, California, New Orleans seem more real than if we saw them ourselves. Metaphor, vocabulary , and use of language are skillfully displayed in every thought , motion , and drawing. A comprehension , an organization, a communication too clear to obstruct the transition from mind to mind or thought to thought make him one of us , make us wish ourselves one of him. In gratitude and recognition , we the Senior Class of 1968 dedicate the Peer to Mr. Thomas Gregory.
s
Administration Under the wise and patient guidance
of Mr. Hurt and Mr. King, Albemarle High entered its fourteenth year with a new student body and revisions in curriculum. Mr. Hurt, who received his Master's from the University of Virginia, has been with Albemarle since it opened in 1953. He served first as Assistant Principal and now as Principal, and has seen every phase of Albemarle's development. Mr. King, who also received his Master's from the University of Virginia, taught Math. and was a football and basketball coach at Albemarle before becoming Assistant Principal. He knows well the varied aspects of our school.

English English courses this year are using
the "new grammar", an approach which tries to eliminate some inconsistencies. The major emphasis, however, is upon literature. Sophmores study shon stories, plays, poetry, and medieval literature. Juniors study American works by Frost, Sandburg, Thoreau, and Emerson, while seniors study in English literature Shakespeare , Milton, Shelle Keats, and others.

Social Studies With the exception of Cavalier Com
monwealth, the U.S. History and U.S. Government courses have completely new textbooks this year. Several U. S. History classes are being taught with the Junior English course, so that the development of American history parallels that of American literature. The two subjects are taught in a two-hour period, allowing a flexible schedule.
A history seminar, which was initiate'd last year , provides an opportunity for independent study and research. This group of students meets for two hours on Wednesday nights to discuss and analyze aspects of American history.

Science Biology, chemistry, and physics are
the three major sciences taught at Albemarle. The biology classes use, in addition to the textbook Modem Biology, the yellow and green versions of the BSCS biology text. The BSCS program, first introduced at Albemarle this year, is a laboratory-centered course which emphasizes experimentation and the history of scientific ideas.
Both the traditional and the newer Chern Study chemistry courses are taught. Both make extensive use of the laboratory and scientific equipment.
The PSSC physics program includes, along with the testbook, many experiments and movies which accompany the course.

Despite the bad reviews and the inconvenient weekend, "A Thurber's Carnival" was well received. Under the direction of Mrs. Marcia Dobbs, the stage crew, lights crew , actors, and make-up committee worked long hours for this presentation. Other than the usual mishaps (lines forgotten, props falling), "A Thurber's Carnival" was very well given.

Student Government
Student Government Week gives the students of Albemarle County an opportunity to run the county government. This year Student Government Week started with an assembly on actual county government. A Supervisor, the County Executive, and a former student government member were the guest speakers. The students themselves were then given a week to start their own parties, write their platforms, and nominate candidates for the county offices. Four parties were formed -New Student Party , Peoples Forward. Progressive Reform Party, and Independent Party. From these four parties, the county offices will be filled and these elected students will run the county government by themselves for one week.

((Camelot" "Oklahoma", Albemarle's first musi
cal, will never be forgotten . This year, Albemarle presents another unforgettable musical , "Camelot". As of March 1 work had already begun and only nine weeks lay ahead for rehearsals, memorizing lines, painting props, fixing lights, and staging the musical-a medieval legend. The Art Dept. had started work on the difficult job of preparing the scenery even before the cast had been chosen. The directors, Mrs. Dobbs, Miss De Sue, and Gary Hinch have spent much time working on this production. The large cast and the crew members have begun rehearsals and everyone plans to make "Camelot" even better and more unforgettable than "Oklahoma".

Junior Class Talent Show
78
--
A secret agent's job is never completed. His assignments carry him to all corners of the earth. He lives in perpetual danger in which his life is always at stake. This constitutes the script of this year's Junior Class Talent Show.
Preparation for each year's production requires the response of each of the members of the junior class . Each hour of work creates a few minutes of the show, but each of those hours is necessary to erect a good show, and hopefully the best of any year.

an impressive 27-19 victory over Wilson Memorial thus adding to the previous thirteen straight victories dating back to the final three games of 1965. Our Patriot football team was unable to subdue the Orange team as Albemarle lost a hard fought 12-0 game. In the Clarke County game, our team snatched an early lead but was unable to stop a Clarke rally which tied the game at 7-7.

In the next game with Lee High of Staunton, Albemarle held Lee High of Staunton to a scoreless tie until the last five and a half minutes in which Lee High rallied for a 7-0 victory. During the Buena Vista game, the Patriots blew the lid off and rolled to a 26-12 Valley District win over Buena Vista. The following week Greg Godfrey scored all three touchdowns for Albemarle and led the team to a 21-7 triumph over the Midlothian Trojans . In the Lexington game , the Albemarle Patriots were unsuccessful in stopping Lexington who won the game 28-7.
During the game with Harrisonburg, Mike Estes kicked what was believed to be Albemarle's first successful field goal. Even this field goal and Greg Godfrey's touchdown were not enough to subdue Harrisonburg in a 20-10 game. An aroused Patriot team put together its best forty-eight minutes of football to smash heavily favored Waynesboro 30-6. The 1967 season was concluded with a muddy but impressive victory during the Homecoming game with Natural Bridge as the Albemarle team rolled over their opponents 20-0. All in all Albemarle won five, tied one, and lost four.

American Field Service There can be very little doubt that our
foreign exchange student, Rauf Ahtam from Turkey, has left us with a very good impression of himself and Turkey . Almost as soon as he arrived, Rauf became interested in Albemarle's activities. Seeing that sports offered itself only to a few , Rauf initiated a soccer assembly to arouse interest and then formed a soccer squad. Rauf has also given speeches at pep rallies and has attended many sport events. Since he has come to Albenprle County, Rauf has been skeet shooting and has tried his luck at rock collecting. Having plans to go to an American college in Istanbul , he took College Boards with the rest of his class. Rauf enjoys snow, and ice skated whenever weather permitted. Rauf experienced Christmas for the first time by surprising the Dofflemyer family by dressing up as Santa Claus and giving his gifts to them.
Rauf is a very interesting and intelligent person. He has a magnetic and outgoing personality. Rauf fit into Albemarle life quite readily and we only hope that his memories of Albemarle High School will be as long lasting as our memories of him.

Experiments In International Living
A street scene in a Turkish village.
153
After being chosen our A.F.S. representative, Janice Trenholme was informed that she could not be eligible because of her Canadian birth. Janice wishes to thank Mr. Hurt, the faculty, and the entire student body for making it possible for her to still go abroad under a different program, Experiment in International Living. The first few weeks of the summer Janice spent at the Experiment's School for International Training in Vermont, along with Peace Corps members and other students like herself.
Janice 's eight member group 's first stop in Turkey was the Eurasian city of Istanbul , formerly Constantinople. For three days they visited the Aya Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the haggling bazaars and swam in the Black Sea. They then traveled to Izmir, Turkey's largest seaport and their home for the summer. With her Turkish mother , her sixteen year old old sister Nur, and twenty-two year old brother Nuri. Janice swam at beautiful beaches , shopped for suede, enjoyed Turkish foods, met dignitaries, and rode camels. At night they danced at clubs, watched outdoor movies, and occasionally found time to sleep. Their weekends were occupied with trips to other cities and villages (where they slept in clay houses) and the remains of the Roman and Greek empires.
When visiting Anatolia , which is the Asian part of Turkey, they explored underground cities. These cities once held over ninety thousand inhabitants. Also, they saw and made use of Turkish baths, visited the capital at Ankara and the hot springs where Cleopatra once bathed.
A trip such as this may offer many rewards. It allows for foreign countries a chance to see what an American is really lik e and it allows a widening of knowledge and experiences for the American. It also gives the representative a chance to objectively view the assets and liabilities of democratic life .

The Key Club, sponsored by Kiwanis Club, is a composite of outstanding young men who serve the school and community. Throughout the year the members are kept busy by such activities as: cleaning the cafeteria, running a school clean-up week, or helping the Kiwanis sell Christmas trees. From activities like these, a Key Club member develops the willi~gness to serve, the ability to create, and the power to help his fellow man. "The Key Club is not a boy's organization, it's a man's way of life."

Drink Pepsi cold-the colder the better. Pepsi-Cola's taste was created for the cold. That special Pepsi taste comes alive in the cold. Drenching, quenching taste that never gives out before your thirst gives in Pepsi pours it on!

A room can be viewed from many angles and through many lenses. A year , too , is seen through many different. viewpoints; where one feels the exhilaration of a challenging class, another finds only the somnolence of a tired and tiring lecture . Sorrow is coincident with joy, defeat with achievement . ..
And of this peace and turmoil that comprises a year, a yearbook can capture merely glimpses. The year must be reconstructed anew by each reader , as an experience unique unto itself. A yearbook serves only to remind.
