EDITORS’LETTER

Dear Readers,

Two years ago we embarked on a journey to create content to encourage black women the world over to embrace the beauty, sophistication and pulchritude that mainstream media does not always project. Moreover, it was our strong desire to become a platform showcas-ing the talents, enterprises and achievements of black women. Our mission is encompassed in our name 1966, which was the first year that a black model graced the cover of Vogue magazine. Donyale Luna was told to cover half her face for that particular cover for fear readers would not be able to handle seeing her in her entirety.

There is no longer any hiding, for black women have gone from obscurity to being sought after supermodels, entertainers, scientists, writers, designers, bloggers and even astronauts. The list is long and together we are adding to it everyday.

Over the years you have let us know what you enjoy most about 1966 and we shall continue to feature the latest in fashion, beauty, hair, lifestyle as well as celebrity and historical spot-lights. This month we have highlights from fashion week, features on fashion maven June Ambrose, singer Jill Scott, Tyra Banks and many more.

Get your travel on by scrolling over to our lifestyle section to read about glamorous Paris, France. Learn of hair inspiration as well as beauty tricks straight from the runway, how to be productive even from your bed, fitness tips to get svelte for summer and urban brands that are emerging as the new face of street-wear. We are proud to be bringing 1966 magazine to you on a monthly basis and look forward to many years in the future. We hope that you enjoy our anniversary edition and as always happy reading!

Sincerely,

Alicia and Arianne Suggs

Benin, Nigeria born Kes Ad-jekughele can thank his Af-rican roots for his smolder-ing and versatile look not to mention his impeccable bone structure. He was discovered at a casting in New York. That fateful run-in has led to amaz-ing photography shoots and walking for many well-heeled designers, which launched his

career.

However, before the magic of the runway, Kes traveled to the United States when he was two years old. In high school, while living in New Rochelle, New York, family and friends always suggested that he consider modeling but he was focused

on his basketball career.

In the summer of 2012, all of that would change. While play-ing basketball he had an acci-dent that injured his knee and led to knee surgery. With bas-ketball no longer being an op-tion, that was when modeling

came on the court.

Not knowing where to start, a friend suggested that he make a Model Mayhem account. Soon thereafter, he began to connect with photographers and others working in the fash-

ion industry.

Page 13: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

In 2013, Theo Hanson of E4 Mod-el Management, later scouted Kes at a NYFW casting. A few months

later he became an E4 Model. Standing at 6’ 3” Mr. Adjekughele

has become a force to be reck-oned with on camera.

Page 14: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

As a result of his hard work and tenacity, this handsome male model has been on a booking craze and has been able to shoot with many amaz-ing photographers from Caviar Coleman, Seth London, Ja’dee Murphy, Joseph Bleu, Al Brack-en, JD Barnes, Sean Micah and

Horacio Hamlet.

Working in the fashion industry has enabled Kes to also work with top-notch stylists such Raytell Bridges and Yasin Ab-dur also known as Dapper Af-rika. During Fashion Week, he walked for many designers and was a part of dazzling fashion show presentations such as Mischka Velasco, Wood Un-derwear, Epperson and The Breckemberg Cricket Club just

to name a few.

In such a short time Kes Ad-jekughele has accomplished much in his career as a model and we are excited to see what

the future will bring.

When it comes to getting dressed this time of year it can be a little bit of a challenge. It’s not quite hot and it’s not exactly cold so the tug of war between winter as well as spring clothes begins. Avoid being bogged down with heavy fashions by investing in stylish pat-terned tights. They’ll keep you warm and will go great with skirts, dresses and a nice pair of distressed denim shorts. So then, get a leg up on spring fashion without having to compromise personal style.

Meet Crystal Ochemba the savvy businesswoman who started StreetAttics.com. This urban and street wear clothing line appeals to the eclectic college student that doesn’t like to fit in, to the classic Hip-Hop music lover that likes to rock a dope tee and maybe even a pair of nice frames.

Crystal launched her company based on her passion for fashion, music and market-ing. Armed with an MBA degree and a marketing background she has gone on to work with many premium brands like: PZI Jeans, Aoki Jeans, A3C Hip Hop Festival, Coca-Cola, Sparkling Ice, CayRum, Atlanta Falcons, State Farm, Verizon Wireless, Blackberry and many more.

So, what is the attic head lifestyle?

It is someone who doesn’t strive to be an individual, they just are. They create their own fashion lane and crave eclectic fashion, individualism and creativity.

According to Ochemba, “At Street Attics we take pride in handpicking our merchan-dise to make sure it fits our criteria perfectly. One criterion is that a brand must be unique.”

Crystal’s dream is to share her passions and vision through StreetAttics.com. Well, we believe, as long as she continues to strive to be different and set trends instead of following them, she will make her dreams come true.

ETRO - WOMEN’S STILETTOI am totally obsessed with Etro’s Womens Stiletto for 2015 Spring/

Summer. I don’t know about you, but I’m so excited that we can start ditching our closed in shoes for open toed to show off our cute little pedis. The lavender color of the shoes with the feather cover-let strap with tassel is divine. I feel like shimmying right now just

looking at them. With the combination of a perfect heel height and just the right amount of support, you can wear these little ladies all

night. I know I will.

EL PASEO FASHION WEEK 10th ANNIVERSARY!

El Paseo Fashion Week’s festivities kicked off with a fashion show featuring designers: Trina Turk, Kevan Hall, Lloyd Klein, Oliver Tolentino,

Anthony Franco and Candice Held.

Page 27: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf
Page 28: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

ANTHONY FRANCO

You would think that the dried blood and sweaty demeanor of the models depicting boxers would be too graphic; however, it actually exuded a power and strength that was dramatic and bold. Even the male models were accessorized with rings, bracelets and other accoutrements that Muhammad Ali could proudly wear. Anthony Franco’s collection is for sassy women only due to its strong, hard and in

your face vibe.

Page 29: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf
Page 30: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

LLOYD KLEIN

The LBD still reigns supreme as indicated by the Lloyd Klein collection. According to Klein, “it’s the woman who is supposed to shine and not the dress or being overpowered by accessories.” However, he still kept the LBD fresh by adding fringes, sparkles and the like. He has dressed everyone from Grace Jones, to Cassie to Nicki Minaj. His motto is that clothing should be made for women of all shapes and sizes because any-one can design a dress for a model that fits fash-ion industry standards so for him the challenge was to dress models of different proportions whether they were curvy or well-endowed up top.

Page 31: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf
Page 32: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

EDUARDO LUCERO

Regarding his models Eduardo Lucero mentioned, “When choosing models for our fashion shows, we always ask for as many girls of color, African American/La-tina/Asian, as we can get because they just devour the runway.” While Lucero’s girls slayed the runway, we were just dy-ing to get our hands on his collection! Ed-uardo’s designs included body suits, jack-ets that doubled as tops, wide leg pants and very chic zipper detailing. Beam us up, we are ready to go to Eduardo Lucero

fashion heaven!

CANDICE HELD HOLDS OUR ATTENTION

KEVAN HALL SPORTWEARS COLLECTION

Designer Candice Held proved that all a woman really needs is the right dress. Her collection included beautiful prints and gowns of vari-ous lengths that accentuated the model’s shapes effortlessly. The collection would be excellent for summer holidays or jet-setting around the world thanks to their re-sort-like feel. We studied the looks and fell in love with the bow ties that held the gowns together in the back. Little details such as these made the collection a true delight

to engage ones stylish senses.

Kevan Hall’s one year sport-wears collection included many often over looked de-tails especially from a style viewpoint. We especially took note of the vivid col-ors, which Hall told us he felt made the designs pop and encapsulated the season perfectly. We would have to agree one hundred fold that Hall’s designs were fresh

and unpretentious.

Page 35: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

TRINA TURK OLIVER TOLENTINO

Trina Turk was the first designer to show during the 10th anniversary fashion show for El Paseo Fashion Week. Trina’s bold shades and tints made her collection vi-brant and dynamic. It was as if her cre-ations pulsated with electrifying and vi-vacious energy. We loved the zesty spirit

and vibe of every piece.

If Cinderella could attend any fashion show she wanted, we are confident she would have been front row for this show! Oliver’s runway show began with a daz-zling red dress in which the model twirled like she was, “Gone with the Wind fabu-lous.” Tolentino delivered one mouth-dropping gown after another without let-ting any member of the audience come up for a couture breath of air. Each head turner piece was like a dreamy piece of

fashion sophistication and fantasy.

Page 36: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

STARS OF PROJECT RUNWAY2015

For El Paseo Fashion Week designers formerly of the hit show Project Runway were not told “Auf Wiedersehen” which when translated means “goodbye” in German. The popular Heidi Klum send off to contestants eliminated from the fashion design competition show was replaced by applause and admiration from the packed out house of stylish onlook-ers. The show included Project Runway alums: Dom Streater, Daniel Esquivel, Michelle Lesniak, Patricia Michaels and a surprise guest ap-pearance by the one and only Michael Costello!

Page 37: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf
Page 38: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

DANIEL ESQUIVEL

Daniel Esquivel’s beautiful collection clearly displayed his talents for original-ity and exquisite tailoring. His designs in-cluded a black and red color palette that was furnished with fringe as well as glitzy

and twinkling embellishments.

Page 39: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

DOM STREATER “QUEEN” OF FASHION

WEEK

Dom Streater’s designs were inspired by three powerful queens that changed the face of the kingdoms they ruled over and now Dom’s creations will forever change the face of fashion. We immediately no-ticed the Victorian collars and graphic lo-gos on various tops proclaiming fabulous Queen-dom. Moreover, the prints held our attention without becoming a repetitive bore, each piece was unique and well ex-ecuted. May Dom Streater’s glorious and

stylish reign never end!

Page 41: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf
Page 42: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

MICHELLE LESNIAK

We got to catch up with the ingenious de-signer after the Stars of Project Runway Fashion Show who with her infectious personality and demeanor filled us in on the inspiration regarding her amazing collection. Michelle said her designs were inspired by hot air balloons, which was a sort of symbolism of her life and fall-ing upwards. We loved the details of the ropes and tassels that brought Michelle’s

vision to life.

Page 43: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

PATRICIA MICHAELS

Patricia Michael’s show started off with a big splash and carried the momentum all the way through! Her models strutted down the catwalk carrying gigantic umbrel-las that complemented the trendy water lily garb. Some of the pieces that we fell in love with incorporat-ed high splits, sheer fabrics, neutral

shades and 3-D petals.

Page 44: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

MICHAEL COSTELLO

2015 COLLECTION

Michael Costello’s runway show for El Paseo Fashion Week was brimming with so many show-stopping pieces we don’t even know where to begin! We gushed over his all noire designs that consisted of long gowns, jumpsuits and short flir-tatious dresses with cut-outs. Backstage Michael shared with us that the collec-tion was inspired by samurai warriors and each ensemble we saw fit the bill because they were fierce, sassy and extremely

sexy. We couldn’t help but notice that bow-ties were a major theme throughout his menswear collection prompting us to ask Michael why he chose that form of tie over others. Costello mentioned that un-like women’s fashion which is extremely versatile, options for men’s fashions are a lot more limited. Costello felt that bowties added a little fun and quirkiness to his de-

signs.

Page 57: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

ALICIA AND ARIANNE SUGGS are the co-founders and editors of 1966 maga-zine. During the past two years they have released 24 issues that have served to change the lives of black women forever. They now share how they began and were washed upon a new world filled of promise and pursuance.

Page 58: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

Alicia on the beginning: My sister and I had wanted to do something together. I had a background in pro-duction/design and she had pro-duction/writing experience, so start-ing a blog and ultimately magazine just felt right. We noticed googling common topics in regards to black hair or beauty didn’t produce many results. So we felt having a maga-zine dedicated to such topics was a

void we wanted to fill.

Page 59: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

Co-Founder of 1966 Alicia on Fashion: I have always had a love for fashion and design-er clothes. I was recently asked if I could only wear one designer for the rest of my life, who would it be? I’d have to say it would have to be Dior, because everything is timeless,

classy & exquisitely designed.

Page 60: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

Arianne on the beginning: We felt there was a clear market for the kind of content we would create. Growing up the Internet wasn’t filled with tons of images of black women and finding them in major magazines was also difficult. We wanted to give young black girls something we didn’t al-ways have readily available...positive, uplifting and informative media that

is made specifically for us.

Page 61: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf
Page 62: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

Arianne on Style: Be true to your-self and just have fun with it. I think too many rules get made regarding how someone should or should not dress themselves. In my opinion, if

you like it, you should wear it.

Arianne on 1966: It’s fun to get to do something that you enjoy especially with family. Alicia is a great busi-ness partner and can always seem to marry our various ideas together. My advice on pursuing your dream career is to truly believe in your-self and make a schedule that you cannot break. Treat your dreams like they are more than a hobby or pastime and surround yourself with people that are just as hungry to

succeed as well.

Page 63: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

Alicia on 1966: I absolutely love working on every issue, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. 1966 was a goal that I really wanted to pursue and see come to fruition. My advice for anyone wanting to pursue their dreams is to expect long hours, trial and error as well as being persis-tent. If you keep knocking on a door

it will be opened to you.

BEAUTY SPYRED LIPS

At the Michael Costello runway show we spied a boisterous red lip color being applied to the model’s pouts. The vivacious tint was not glossy or overly lustrous but matte and opaque.

Application Tip: Make this daring beauty look your own by revealing the true shade of the matte red lipstick. Do so, by first applying concealer all over your lips prior to layering on your lip color.

Product: OPI Do You Lilac It?

Why: This shade is too pretty for words and is simply per-fection when it comes to nail shades for spring. It’s light with an airy feel and not so bold of a tint that onlookers only notice what’s going on with your hands.

Product: Full Lash Bloom Mascara by LashBlast

Why: At times it can be diffi-cult to find a decent mascara that not only truly works but isn’t hard on the wallet. I love this mascara by CoverGirl which gives my lashes a voluminous, full look.Bonus: No crunchy hard feel-ing lashes after several hours either!

FOUR MUST HAVES IN ONE

SLEEK, STYLISH TOOL

Pluck N’ File

Have you ever been getting ready for a night out on the town and you are frantically looking for beauty tools? You work up a sweat as you realize your tweezers are in your sock drawer, your eyebrow comb is in your travel bag, your nail file is in the medicine cabinet and your puppy is chew-

ing on your nail buffer?

You think WTF! There has to be a better way to keep track of all your beauty-grooming tools. Lucky for us, Dawn M. Sole, Founder and Inventor of Pluck N’ File; felt the same way. Due to her hard work and tenacity she created an all-in-one tweezer, eyebrow comb, replaceable nail file, and nail buffer.

How did Dawn come up with the patented idea? Here’s the 4-1-1:

One day while grocery shopping, Dawn was carrying sev-eral bags to her car. When she opened her car door, she chipped her nail. She placed the grocery bags in her car and

dug through her purse to locate a nail file.

Page 73: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

73 – 1966mag.com

Then, she had to dig through her purse a second time to find her nail buffer. She noticed the perfect natural light flowing into her car and decided if she was going to go to the trouble of repairing her nail, she might as well take advantage of the lighting and pluck her eye-

brows as well.

So she dug through her purse a THIRD time to find her tweezers. It was at this moment when the light bulb went off in Dawn’s head and the idea for the Pluck N’

File™ was born.

Surely Dawn was among millions of women who experience small beauty emergencies, or opportu-nities, at the most inconvenient

times.

What if all of these beauty tools could be combined into one, stylish and convenient device? Dawn saw the problem and wanted to create a solution for her and millions of women who, like Dawn, would appreciate the convenience and accessibility of several tools in

one device.

This innovative device eliminates the need for multiple grooming items, delivering everything you need in one

stylish apparatus.

I don’t know about you but I am getting one to keep in my car (you never know when you will have a beau-ty emergency), one for my purse and another for my bathroom! Oh, and it will make the perfect gift for my mother and sister…yes, and I will need one for my travel

bag. By the way, you can get yours too! See below.

For women who want to change or update their hairdos with colors or cuts, we are going

to walk through the actual 2015 trendy hairstyles that you can emulate, which will compli-

ment your new wardrobe. Center parts are rocking the runway and will help you to make

that bold statement. This is an easy and simple style for day or night wear. It can be done

formally or casually. But let’s talk about color first.

Color can get you the attention you want

Bold hair color is in spring/summer. However, if you are not good with maintaining your

hair, this might not be the right choice for you. If you opt to do so, however, this is the best

statement that you can make with your hair. Embrace this years bold hair color move-

ment.

No color?

If you are not comfortable with color,

then make a fashion statement with

side parts. This is an element that has

been brought into this season; carried

over from the fall. Also, the messy up

hairdo has been a signature look for

many celebrities. This is an indication

that it could be worthwhile for you as

well. It gives you a different look and the

hairstyle requires less effort and can be

glamorous too.

Bangs! Bangs! Bangs!

These are never out of fashion. A nice

fringe bang will inspire you this summer

and spring. Fringe bangs give you many

styling options. However, while this is an

enticing choice, many people may think

that a fringe bang requires a longer time

commitment, which they don’t want to

make. Faux bangs will give you instant

edginess. So give it a try!

A Few More Options That Can Be Game

Changers For You

The lustrous side part is another must-

have hairdo. You can wear your side part

so many ways, but it is more suited to

people who wear their hair long. It can

be quite elegant and youthful, if done

right. You can create a side part that is

neatly textured from your hair roots.

If you opt for a twisted headband 60s

retro look, it will work for events like

festivals and concerts; whether day or

night. With the half tuck hairdo, you can

lead spring hair trends with lots of ethe-

real selections. Using a headpiece adds

flair to your hairstyle and can create

both a formal and casual look.

Chignon and tendrils is an ideal choice

for a quick hairdo that is easy and styl-

ish. It can be purposely messy with

tendrils falling around your face. It can

also be soft enough to complement any

fashion collection.

Page 81: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

Side ponytails will dominate. It

draws attention and provides

beauty, femininity and youthful-

ness. Experiment with this po-

nytail by twisting it or dressing

it up with hair accessories.

Conclusion

No matter how you wear your

hair in the 2015 spring and

summer months, you must be

comfortable about your choice.

However, be encouraged that

you do have many options and

that puts you in a better position

to make a bolder statement. You

go girl!

SPOTLIGHTJUNE AMBROSE STYLIST TO THE STARS

By Serena Harris

June Ambrose has dressed some of the biggest names in Hollywood and beyond. She has been

given carte blanche by celebrities such as Missy Elliot, R. Kelly, Jay-Z and Diddy to make them look

like a million bucks. And she has not disappointed her clients or the admirers of her work;

expressing her creativity through fashion and design.

Page 85: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

85 – 1966mag.com

In addition to glamming up the celebs, she also dresses the

regular folks with her collection June by June Ambrose which

can be found on HSN. In true June Ambrose fashion, all the

styles in her collection are named after world famous divas

such as Tina Turner and Diana Ross. It just makes sense that

she would design a Moto Jacket with removable sleeves or a

Faux Fur Vest cinched with a Sash Belt. Just like her, the col-

lection does not disappoint.

Ambrose is also well known for the style work she did on the

hit TV show The X-Factor. She briefly had her own TV series,

Styled by June, in which she styled Da Brat, Jaleel White and

others. Her style was also featured on other TV shows, such

as Project Runway as a guest judge, on Rachel Ray sharing

Style and Skin Secrets and on Canada’s Next Top Model as

a celebrity judge. Even the Dave Matthews Band benefited

from her expertise as she served as the stylist for their video

documentary Dave Matthews Band: Listener Supported.

It is difficult, to say the least, for a person to make their mark

in the world of fashion. June Ambrose hasn’t just left a mark;

she has absolutely crushed the competition. We are so hon-

ored to be able to shine a spotlight on her trailblazing work in

our big fashion issue this month. We wait with baited breath

to see what Ms. Ambrose will think of next!

JILLSCOTT

In FOCUS

Page 87: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

87 – 1966mag.com

To say this songstress has

a sexy and sultry voice is quite

the understatement. She pos-

sesses the ability to blend a jazz

and R&B sound into one great

song after another, keeping her

legions of fans in a state of musi-

cal ecstasy. It is no wonder she

is so talented having been raised

in North Philadelphia, a place

known for producing great black

music artists.

Scott has collaborated with some

of the biggest names in music, in-

cluding Erykah Badu, Eric Benet,

Will Smith and Common. She was

invited to join the band Roots in

studio by none other than drum-

mer ?uestlove himself. The result

of that invitation was the compo-

sition “You Got Me” that became

a top 40 pop hit in 1999.

In 2000 she signed with newly

formed record label Hidden

Beach and released her debut

album, “Who Is Jill Scott? Words

and Sounds, Vol. 1” in July,

2000. The album received lots

of favorable reviews and peaked

at number 20 on the Billboard

Charts and at number 2 on the

R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Her

star power trajectory was on the

rise, eventually earning herself a

Grammy nomination in 2003 for

Best Female Vocal Performance

for “A Long Walk”.

All of her musical success

opened up other doors of oppor-

tunity. She played a prominent

role in Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I

Get Married?” and had a part in

the movie Hounddog starring

Dakota Fanning. These roles

paved the way for her to star

in her own HBO series debut-

ing in 2009, “The No. 1 Ladies’

Detective Agency”. Although it

only aired for one season, it still

earned a 2009 Peabody award

in 2010. Producer Anthony Ming-

hella decided to cast Scott in the

leading role after seeing some

of her poetry readings as well as

noting that she had a rare screen

presence.

Besides performing with a Cana-

dian touring company doing the

musical Rent, Scott also was of-

fered a role in the Broadway play

Chicago but declined it. Person-

ally, I loved the comedic role she

played in the romantic comedy

Baggage Claim starring Paula

Patton and Djimon Hounsou.

Although she can sing her butt

off, I hope other producers will

recognize her acting chops and

cast her in more roles either on

television or the big screen. In the

meantime, I’ll just keep on follow-

ing her long walk of success.

DÉCORHOME

INTERIOR DESIGN FOR A BEAUTIFUL BEACH VACATION

HOME

Page 89: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

89 – 1966mag.com

As most beach vacation homes are owned by people from the cold winter north, the natural desire is to design the inside of the home to reflect the surrounding outdoor scenery and all of the things that draw northerners to the warmer cli-mates of the south.

The key to selecting finishes and décor for a beach vaca-tion home is remembering one important word: Light. Light colors, light fabrics, light finish materials for floors and acces-sories and, of course, allow-ing plenty of natural light to penetrate into the home. If the homeowner allows the reasons they are drawn to beach style living to enter into their vaca-tion home, they will find it very easy to be inspired in making selections that will extend that atmosphere.

Light, tropical colors for the walls, in very pale greens, peaches, and coral pink will subtly bring the breezy feeling of the beach into any room. Ac-cent this breeziness by hanging sheer, white, floor-length cur-tains at the windows to ebb and flow with the ocean light winds.

Ceiling fans are a must in any beach front vacation home, both for functionality and for aesthetics, and in a tropical cli-mate the most appealing finish is that of a light with bamboo fan blades to reinforce the lazi-ness and serenity of the areas foliage.

Furniture can be oversized, as long as it is light in color and comfortable, inviting the user to lounge and nap. Stay away from dark, heavy wood furni-ture, especially in a dining area, as this will leave an impact of formality that is not in keeping with the laid back lifestyle of the beach. For a more casual feel, you may even consider stringing a wall mounted ham-mock in a sunroom, to further induce a mid day siesta.

To complete the interior dé-cor, consider accessories that incorporate elements of the beach: sand, sea shells and palm trees are common themes that will bring the final touches of your vacation getaway into every room of your home away from home.

It’s no secret—we all love to

be in bed. It’s the ultimate

place of relaxation, where

you’re completely free

from the stresses of the day. If

you’re anything like me, you try to

maximize your time there, lingering

for a minute or 30 every morning

before work or crawling in for a

premature nap that turns into a full

night of sleep.

6 WAYS TO BE PRODUCTIVE WITHOUT LEAVING YOUR BED

Turns out that’s OK.

In fact, your bed’s not just a place for snoozing or Netflix

marathons—you can easily turn that mecca of relaxation

into a place of self-improvement, productivity, and suc-

cess. Next time you’re tempted to turn in early or can’t

fathom the thought of getting out from under the covers,

stop feeling guilty—and try one of these ways to make

the most of your time in bed.

Page 91: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

91 – 1966mag.com

1. Boost Your Health

Taking a few deep breaths can be the

perfect way to de-stress and rejuve-

nate for a productive next day. Deep

breathing exercises have been proven

to have positive mental and physi-

cal health impacts—they can stimu-

late the lymphatic system, thereby

increasing blood flow and reduc-

ing fatigue, and alleviate stress and

anxiety. All from the comfort of

your own bed!

To get started, experts recommend

first exhaling any remaining breath

in your lungs so that you can take

the deepest breath possible. Then,

breathe in through your nose for

three seconds, hold for three sec-

onds, and exhale for six seconds.

Repeat at least three times, and then

get ready to reap the benefits.

2. Write Your Heart Out

Sure, we’ve all kept that short-lived

journal about unrequited crushes

when we were pre-teens, but studies

show that keeping a regular jour-

nal as an adult can supercharge

your productivity.

It makes sense: All your pesky

thoughts from the day can prevent

you from achieving true relaxation

while in the comforts of your bed.

But by writing down your inner

thoughts in a journal before you

nod off, you can solidify your mem-

ories, capture those fleeting cre-

ative ideas, and clear your mind for

deeper thinking.

Another approach? Write first thing

in the morning. A method called

morning pages recommends writ-

ing 750 words in a stream of con-

sciousness when you first get up.

This allows you to clear your head,

so you can focus on what is most

important for the day. Just keep a

pen and paper next to your bed, and

in-bed-journaling is one surefire

way to boost your brainpower all

day long.

Page 92: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

92 – 1966mag.com

4. Read Up

No need to be ashamed about curling

up with that young adult book before

bed: One study demonstrated that read-

ing fiction increases your empathy,

which may help you get along better

with your team at work. Improved ana-

lytical thinking and memory are also

cited among the benefits of reading.

And, unless you’re in the middle of a

thriller, reading before bed will help

you get in the relaxed mindset you

want before falling asleep, so that

you can wake up and function produc-

tively.

3. Plan For the Day Ahead

Experts recommend using a weekly plan-

ner to get your thoughts, to-dos, and

schedule organized. So on those morn-

ings when you don’t want to get out of

bed yet? Grab your planner or computer,

and spend a few extra minutes under the

covers organizing your time for the

next few days or week.

A few of our favorite planning tips:

Schedule your to-dos into your calen-

dar, ideally at specific times and places

so you can hold yourself accountable.

And don’t just block out time for meet-

ings and concrete tasks—remember to

make time for goal setting, refocusing,

and even resetting your brain between

different things you have to do.

Page 93: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

5. Seriously Clear Your

Head

If you’re like me, there’s

a seemingly impossible

line between meditation

and sleeping. But the

benefits you can reap

from even a few minutes

of meditation are seri-

ously awesome (think

eased stress and anxi-

ety, long-term increases

in focus, opened-up

unknown creative cen-

ters in your mind), so it’s

definitely worth trying.

For the easiest way to

get started, download a

meditation app like Bud-

dify. There’s absolutely

no need to get out of

bed—just get comfort-

able, and use the five, 10,

or 20 minutes of medita-

tion to jump start self-

improvement, success,

and productivity.

6. Cuddle

OK, hear us out: Cud-

dling may seem like it

has nothing to do with

productivity, but there

are actually surprising

benefits that can di-

rectly link to your suc-

cess in the office.

For one, being cuddled

releases a hormone

called oxytocin, which

makes you feel good

and connected to other

people. Additionally, it

boosts the immune sys-

tem, reduces anxiety

and stress, and even

lowers the risk of heart

disease. All these ben-

efits lead to a healthier

body and mind, which

only primes you for suc-

cess. Snuggle up!

The next time you’re

feeling guilty about

whiling away hours in

your bed, remember these

tips. As the saying goes,

without the dark there

can be no light. So too

is the relationship be-

tween productivity and

relaxation—you must

have both for a suc-

cessful career and life.

Sweet dreams!

VISIT PARIS THE CITY

OF LIGHT

Page 95: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

95 – 1966mag.com

If you are planning to visit Paris this sum-mer, there are a few things that you may want to know that can make your Paris visit a beautiful experience.

Paris is the most visited city in the world. About 44 million people visit Paris every year. Paris is the capital city of France and is famous for its art, culture, theatres, mu-seums and restaurants.

Though there are many museums and tour-ist attractions in Paris, so you might not have time to visit them all. However, you won’t want to miss destinations like the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre Museum, Sacre Coeur, Notre-Dame and the Cathedral.

If you want to add more fun to your trip, consider renting a vacation apartment. Paris is famous for its rental apartments, and it is always a good deal to rent a personal vacation apartment than a hotel room in Paris.

Don’t worry about getting around be-cause the Paris metro system is one of the world’s most used metro systems. It con-nects the complete city, so it is easy to get around town.

If you have never been to New York and wonder what the “Statue of Liberty” looks like, you can see one in Paris. In the middle of the river Seine you will see the same Statue of Liberty as you see here in Amer-ica.

Paris is often called “The City of Lights.” People think that it is because Paris is full of lights, especially at night, but the reason is much deeper. Actually, the name was given to the city because of the large num-ber of writers, scholars, artists and academ-ics Paris has given to the world.

7 HEALTHY HABITS TO

IMPROVE YOUR LIFE

We all have habits, some good and some bad. While we may not always remember to avoid some of the bad habits, it is good to at least establish a routine of some good habits. The seven habits listed below are good for improving the quality of your life and possibly even extending it. Incorporating some or all of these habits will help keep you healthy, happy and wise. Give them a read and then give some serious thought to making them a regular part of your life, you won’t regret it, on the contrary you will be glad you did.

• Eat at least three servings of fruit and vegetables every day – This will provide some of the necessary nutrients for your body including essential vita-mins and minerals. Vegetables that are red, dark green or yellow in color are especially good for you.

• Stay active or keep moving – In other words get some exercise to help reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers. Ideally, you will want to get 30 minutes of exercise at least five days a week.

Page 97: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

97 – 1966mag.com

It takes time to form good habits so don’t get discour-aged if you don’t start doing these things right away. Start with one habit and make it a regular part of your day and then incor-porate another one until, gradually you are perform-ing all of these good habits in your daily life. Continue to persevere and the good habits will pay off, perhaps you will live long enough to share them with your great-great grandchildren!

• Enjoy Green Tea – The health benefits to drinking green tea are numerous a few of which are lowering blood pressure and raising the level of your good cholesterol. It is fine to have a few cups a day, but to get the most benefit from the tea, allow it to steep for about 15 minutes.

• Get Adequate Sleep – Chronic sleep deprivation is bad for your health and can increase the risk for heart disease, diabetes and shorten your life span. Try to get between seven and nine hours of sleep a night to protect your health.

• Spend quality time with your pet – Pet therapy is good for lowering stress hormones in the body. Serotonin, the brain chemical responsible for moods, is increased, so playing with your pet is likely to put you in a good mood. Walking or playing with your pet also allows you to get the exercise you both need.

• Do volunteer work – Believe it or not volunteer work can in-crease your lifespan. It gives you a sense of purpose and fulfill-ment, staves off loneliness and generally makes you feel good. Volunteerism makes a difference in your life and the lives of those you help.

• Stop eating before you are full – To cut down on the amount of calories you are eating, it is good to stop eating once you no lon-ger feel hungry but before you feel full. Eating less will help you maintain your weight or even lose some weight. Plus you avoid the guilt and discomfort that comes from overeating.

SETTING UP A WORKOUT ROUTINE:

ADVICEFOR FITNESS

ENTHUSIASTS

Many people strive to be dedi-cated to improving their fitness level by working out regularly, but very few know how to design a truly effective program. If there are issues present at the moment with your routine, take a look at making major changes as soon as possible. It’s important to develop a workout regimen that is highly customized for your body type. When you follow your custom workout to the tee, the potential for fitness is maximized almost overnight. Let’s take a look at a few tips that should come in handy for those looking to better their routines.

What Does Your Body Need?

The process of personalization is a big part of working out where most people tend to fail. Do not simply follow just what others are doing since somewhere down the road your body may not be able to handle the routine that you have embarked on to complete. Others may be at a higher or lower fit-ness level which could affect your workout in a negative way.

It is important to be in tune with your body. For instance, let us assume that because you have joint pain the joint press is not an option but you have the option of doing dumbbell chest press instead. If you knew this ahead of time, would you still risk suffer-ing more joint pain due to the fact that somebody else was doing this exercise? Of course not, you would do the dumbbell chest presses instead and achieve bet-ter results that way.

Page 99: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

99 – 1966mag.com

Intensity Over Quantity

If you are starting the process of developing a fitness regimen, you must begin by identifying your goals. Your goal could be as easy as gaining muscle mass and los-ing weight. Intensity will be the main focus when trying to achieve those goals. In general, you will need intensity exercises to gain the most bang for your buck.

Fewer reps with much heavier weights are much more intense than more repetitions with lighter weights. The overall work done will be less, and you will simply attain better results.

Focus On Your Overall Timing

Many people make the mistake of mistiming how or how often they will workout. What does it mean to make these timing mistakes? For example, someone may exercise twice a day for no reason at all. There’s really no valid purpose for doing this, and it will make you very tired! There are even professionals that subscribe to this method, but they often have to take supplements to keep their body healthy or they are simply unusual in that they do not get hurt as often as others. The average individual won’t be able to do that, and this isn’t the type of regimens you want to be aiming for anyway.

Your target should always be to do what is neces-sary to reach your goals in as little time as possible.

Read through and keep in mind those tips noted here to make sure you are directed to the right path. The key to achieving success with your workouts is having a routine in place that is designed to get you to the target you are aiming for. Too many folks give this concept short shrift and then lament the fact that they are not getting results. These tips should assist maximizing your workouts every time you go to the gym or just work out generally. Just make certain not to waste you effort of exercising, but actually get the results you want.

Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans; strokes are the number four killer. Obviously, taking good care of our hearts is of critical importance. This simple fact was painfully discovered by two-time heart attack survivor Julia Allen. Her brushes with this potent killer led her to make heart healthy changes in her lifestyle and she is now the 2015 spokesperson for the National American Heart Association.

Check out her amazing story below:

It took two heart attacks for me to realize that I put everyone’s needs above mine. Your body talks to you and you need to listen!” - Julia Allen

“Hi my name is Julia Allen and “I think I’m having a heart attack” is what I told the hospital registrar before collapsing. On a sunny afternoon Friday, April 15, 2013, I woke up feeling fine. I went to work and started feeling a little short-ness of breath, heartburn, tightening in my jaw, and nausea, but you know the life of a Mom…we just keep right on pushing. “Maybe I’m coming down with something” was what I thought and tried to rest my eyes for second in the break room.

Later, I sat on a conference call and started feeling worse so I looked up the symptoms and saw “heart attack” coming up often. I was shocked but still dismissed the pos-sibility and kept working. “I’ll shake whatever this is” yet the symptoms returned much worse.

A few hours later, I went online again and came across The American Heart Association’s website. I started read-ing real stories by women who had symptoms like I was. I kept clicking and clicking, hoping to find a differ-ent diagnosis. Here’s where “that won’t happen to me” intersects real-ity. I sat there numb realizing that I was having a heart attack.

I called my husband and doctor and they both told me to get to the hos-pital immediately. I chose not to call 911. Why? I was counting dollars and wanted to avoid the ambulance bill. I drove home first and left a key for my sons, made sure they had an afternoon snack prepared, and then drove myself to the emergency room. At this point, loss of oxygen was obviously affecting my brain!

MAKE IT YOUR CHOICE TO BE HEART HEALTHY

Page 103: 1966 Magazine APRIL 2015 Issue_revised.pdf

103 – 1966mag.com

If I would have arrived any later, my story may have been much different. Myocardial infarction is referred to as a “heart attack”. With each passing minute, the heart loses oxygen. I was admitted and had my second heart attack that evening.

Everything moved so quickly. I was in utter disbelief that this was happen-ing to me! I lay in the bed in and out of medicated sleep and when they tell you life flashes before your eyes? It really does! My Husband! My Sons! My Parents! My Purpose! My Family and Friends! Is this really it? Is life end-ing this way?

I had so many plans and goals yet to achieve. I had a laundry list of things I wanted to instill in my children! And then I prayed that infamous prayer, “God, if you allow me to live...I promise that I will live the purpose YOU have assigned me. No holds barred! I’m yours!”

After months of cardiac rehab, therapy and nutritional counseling, my fam-ily and I ALL focus on heart healthy living. We’ve made changes to our nu-trition and physical activity and my health choices have resulted in losing 30lbs and counting. Since my family has a history of heart disease, every-one in my family has been tested and we’ve discovered that my eldest son has high cholesterol. After seeing what I’ve been through, he is now mak-ing HIS OWN healthy choices!

The survivors that shared their story on AHA/Go Red For Women’s website LITERALLY saved my life!! Had I not read their stories, I probably would have left work early to nap to a much worse outcome.

In hindsight, I realized that I had my first heart attack around 8:45am. I waited until about 2:00pm to go to the hospital because I didn’t want to incur an unnecessary bill or wait in the emergency room only to have them tell me nothing was wrong. My health and wellbeing were clearly not my priority and my entire mindset needed to change!

Now, a proud heart attack survivor, I’m ALIVE in more ways than one to share my story with EVERYONE!! My greatest lesson is that being healthy includes MIND, BODY & SOUL!! They work together for heart healthy liv-ing!!

Slow down...take care of your beau-tiful self and please, make your heart a priority!
